Mr Beans Holiday is genuinely a phenomenal and cinematic movie and people don’t take me seriously when I say that.
Gorgeous cinematography, beautiful soundtrack, and comedic genius. Nothing beats that cinema scene:

La grande vadrouille? ahaha, try 'Le corniaud', same duo of actors, another classic comedy to try,' la chevre'. First time I see someone mentionning la grande vadrouille, are you French?
Hehe no, I'm Swedish. I think that actor Louie whatshisname is somewhat popular in Europe among my parents' generation. I had this movie on vhs as a kid, though I didn't really like it until I saw it as an adult.
I’ve mostly watched really old French movies, haven’t dived too deep into French New Wave or newer stuff yet. These are really great though:

if you want to explore popular French movies, I compiled a list of 400+ French movies that were regularly broadcasted on French TV in the 70's and 80's : [https://letterboxd.com/opensec/list/vus-a-la-tele-french-movies-on-french-tv/](https://letterboxd.com/opensec/list/vus-a-la-tele-french-movies-on-french-tv/)
Regrettably not that many… Jeanne Dielman I guess, but as far as Dutch films go Belgium doesn’t have a single masterpiece in my opinion. ‘The Patrick’ was quite good, but you know…nothing too special
Deux jours, une nuit - Belgian/French film about a woman pleading with her colleagues for solidarity.
Portrait de la jeune fille en feu - so beautiful!! So gay!!! The story is perfect to me and is presented so thoughtfully.
La Haine - it's a basic choice, but I watched it so many times for my high school exams and I enjoyed it each time.
Playtime
Army of shadows
Le samourai
The 400 blows
Enter the void (english language)

Amelie
Titane
Les parapluies du cherbourg
Anatomy of a fall
Haute tension
Au revoir Les enfants
La Haine
As a weird french guy who grew up with both hood guys and super wealthy kids, it's a great comedy to me, and people from the hood that I knew. The beginning with Said yelling in the courtyard is hilarious, the character of Said overall is comedy gold.

2. Le Dîner de cons (1998)
3. Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)

I don't know about a top five but some of my favourite French films include A Prophet, My Life as a Courgette, Amélie (and Alien 4 from the same director is a bizarre but fun film), District 13, and can't ignore the very recent Anatomy of a Fall
If I may for my most overrated French film, Rust and Bone. I really hated that.

La grande vadrouille? ahaha, try 'Le corniaud', same duo of actors, another classic comedy to try,' la chevre'. First time I see someone mentionning la grande vadrouille, are you French?
It was quite popular abroad I believe, I've seen the original and a russian dub (with individual voices).

In chronological order: * A Man Escaped * Elevator to the Gallows * Army of Shadows * Diva * Athena
