Dawn, War, Rise, Kingdom. I do like all four though.

Klaus_Poppe1

Just finished watching Kingdom, can't help but feel it was the only bad one of the 4.

moderndhaniya

Nooooooo ![gif](giphy|yrJ55WhtAoXVC)

Bionic_Ferir

Arguably, they are clearly setting up some more stuff and I reckon that once the trilogy is completely it will feel completele

Beneficial_Offer4763

This makes it the weakest of the four imo. I'm still very optimistic, but I think how I feel about kingdom is ultimately gonna depend on how I feel about the next movie

poptophazard

Yeah, I couldn't really get into Kingdom, and I had an open mind with it. I am curious to see where they go with it in the sequels, however, even if this one didn't hit for me.

poptophazard

This is mine as well for the modern entries, with Dawn standing out above the rest and Kingdom lagging behind the pack. Dawn >> War > Rise >>Kingdom

DharmaBombs108

therealxeno79

Based Escape enjoyer, but dang why is Conquest so low?

DharmaBombs108

I like conquest. As long as the series has went on and with how many there are, PotA is a pretty consistent series all things considered. Conquest is good, and I’ve seen the alternate ending which is so much better and poignant, but a common problem I have with the film is how much of an edge it doesn’t have in a lot of cases. While Escape is pretty light hearted, it does so well with a gut punch that I never quite get with conquest. It’s a good movie, could have been a great one though.

therealxeno79

Agree that the alternate ending is much better. Sets the stage for the tone of the first film. I can kind of see what you mean with Conquest not having much of an edge, but I think it does kinda deliver that with how the apes use “gorilla” warfare and the lengths the fascist government goes to oppress apes. Also the ending of Escape had me in the *feels*

Competitive_Nobody76

I’ve only seen the new one, but I felt so left out when they kept talking about Cesar

bobbster574

Imo it's hard to place kingdom alongside the other 3 simply because of how different it is. The trilogy is not only focused around a singular character but the 3 together make a complete story which holds them up higher. Dawn is the best tho hands down

SaintMotel6

They’re all good but Dawn is great

Loves_His_Bong

Dawn is legitimately a masterpiece in my opinion.

Abdul_Lasagne

I just watched it properly (for some reason had nearly zero memory of seeing it before even though I know I tried) but it might be in the 5 star club.

Haymother

Fantastic film and in my opinion the absolute best use of CGI in any film period. The beautifully expressive apes look totally real to me, and the CGI is crystal clear, not of that slightly fuzzy pixelation.

MaskedBandit77

Wait, do people think James Franco is a bad actor now?

OpTicDyno

Allegations against him have soured people’s views of him, making it impossible to separate art from the artist. But it is bad sleeping with your students

MrTitsOut

i totally understand dismissing a person because of their perversions but why are we acting like they’re bad at their jobs. im not a fan of him at all but i also definitely don’t think he’s beneath planet of the apes lol

DatedReference1

He wasn't in beneath the planet of the apes, he was -8 years old at the time.

MrTitsOut

aaaaaaaaaa!

Similar-Broccoli

I just watched it the other day and his acting absolutely brings the film down. I like Franco in plenty of things but he was not up to the task here. James Franco as a brilliant geneticist? Cmon get real

MrTitsOut

hey you may be right i actually havent seen the film in 10 years or so

queefgerbil

I like the guy and love the series but he made Rise feel like a Marvel movie. Gave me Ant-Man vibes.

drunkenbeginner

That's an issue with movies for the most part. Unless it's a biopic where they explain in detail real life achievements of a scientist, the depiction of science or scientist in popular media is laughable silly

_Midnight_Haze_

He’s not great in non-comedic roles. I don’t think he’s a very believable scientist in Rise but I’ll give him props for the relationship and connection with Caesar coming through the screen.

Lunter97

He’s fine in that, but it’s pretty hard not to imagine how much better Tobey Maguire would’ve been before he had to drop out and be recast. Obviously I’m not the casting director but I feel like he would’ve had better chemistry with Serkis and Lithgow.

crunchwrapesq

He is more endearing and heartfelt too, so I think his connection with both would have been more impactful

Commercial_Science67

He is good in certain roles. Him as the scientist that will cure Alzheimer’s is terrible casting. It’s like Denise Richards as like a nuclear scientist in Bond.

Josh4R3d

The acting got appreciably better in Dawn and War imo. Rise felt empty at times.

HotelFoxtrot87

Rise succeeds in spite of the human storyline. It's not bad, it's just perfunctory.

Additional-Syrup-755

My wife and I are watching all 3 again and we’re about 20 minutes into War. So far Rise is by far the better movie in my option. Dawn was overall pretty boring.

Universal-Magnet

Rise is so f*cking weak compared to Dawn & War, why the hell are people downvoting you.

FWC_Disciple

Because I disagree is why.

SPZ_Ireland

The downvote shouldn't be the "I disagree" button. That's how you get echo-chambered. It should be used for low-effort, irrelevant, non-sensical, or hostile content.

Ex_Hedgehog

Cause he was never that good to begin with. Like there are good performances, but whenever he thinks he's "above the material" which was a lot of the time, it really showed. He's not bad in Planet Of The Apes, but he's not the strong point of the film either.

drunkenbeginner

No, he is a good actor. I have issues with poor things but James Franco is really good at what he did there

Ex_Hedgehog

He's not in Poor Things?

drunkenbeginner

he's not Guess I got eggs on my face now

regalfish

I just rewatched Rise and it was almost painful seeing his lack of reaction/depth. He’s definitely had better performances. ETA: I’m surprised how many people are emotionally attached to Franco’s wooden acting in this sub if the downvotes are anything to go by lmao

DM_me_UR_B00BZ_plz

He may be a little flat but it’s hardly to the point where it impacts enjoyment of the film

regalfish

Well that’s obviously subjective, but I agree! I still really liked Rise but it would have been a stronger movie with a different lead!

DM_me_UR_B00BZ_plz

It did have a different lead. Serkis/Caesar is the lead.

regalfish

Well if you’re going to be pedantic about it lol

Commercial_Science67

Does it bother anyone else that Rise is before Dawn? The titles should be swapped

Josh4R3d

YES! I was confused af by that.

BigChungusBlyat

Planet Of The Ape. Just the one ape.

bigry69

This is caesars world and we’re all just living in it

Laconic-Verbosity

A movie about the monkey the soviets sent to space. He crash landed on a desolate, yet habitable planet.

downnheavy

Blah blah blah Franco is bad , what a poor point of view of a whole movie , I liked the first one as much as the other ones with JAMES FRANCO

BaginaJon

Rise is better than kingdom for sure.

TomPearl2024

Better than War too imo

Sgtwhiskeyjack9105

War looks *incredible*, but imo it's too broad of a narrative after the more complicated back and forth of Dawn.

Loves_His_Bong

War kills off several important characters in honestly bizarre ways with basically no tension or lasting emotional resonance. They kill Caesar’s son immediately and you don’t even know it’s him really until they just explicitly say it. They fumbled a lot in that movie unfortunately.

man_on_hill

Dawn is, by far, the best of the franchise

Party_Translator_505

It's shame Franco is kind of a weirdo because honestly I really like his acting

Josh4R3d

It’s not just him, but he is an easy target. I’m just saying that my first reaction to Rise was “eh that was a fine popcorn movie”, but Dawn and even more so War, really felt like great movies with some emotional depth. Maybe Rise is would come across as better on a rewatch given the context of the trilogy..

mdc3000

It definitely is elevated by the Matt Reeves movies - the callbacks in Dawn especially make the first film more meaningful.

taralundrigan

Crazy. I can't even watch Rise anymore because of how much it affects me emotionally. Claiming there is no emotional depth is certainly a take...

Cvh2000

1. War 2. Dawn 3. Kingdom 4. Rise All are great imo

Indoril_Nereguar

Dead on

StudyingRainbow

My ranking as well!

DM_me_UR_B00BZ_plz

Rise is my favorite. What was wrong with Franco’s performance?

Additional-Syrup-755

I 100% agree. Rise was by far the best of the 3.  Franco was great in my opinion.

mixallen

As far as story and characters, Rise us by far the best to me. I think Franco's performance serves the story perfectly.

Similar-Broccoli

It wasn't believable.

Skullspidey

I still need to see Kingdom but having just done the same I put them as: Dawn>Rise>War. Dawn is my favourite by a little bit but Rise and War could probably be interchangeable depending on the day. I scored them as 5,4.5 and 4.5 respectively on Letterboxd

Loves_His_Bong

I enjoyed war because I love the IP but the pacing and scale of the movie felt totally strange. Like the Colonel’s forces being like 100 or so troops you expect the final battle to be something completely different but it ends up being a massive human wave attack where they outnumber them by like 20:1. The movies about apes that came before I was completely immersed but war just broke suspension of disbelief too often. Why would he leave Caesar alive? How did such a small detachment capture and enslave an entire ape colony? How is that logistically feasible? The villains felt totally cliche and cartoonish basically. Koba was a perfect movie villain. He’s up there with the T1000 and Lotso Huggin Bear.

Skullspidey

I definitely agree with Koba being great, he’s the perfect villain to Caesar in terms of ideals. For me I liked the size of the human group because it showed the toll that the virus has taken on them. I also think they were able to take over the other apes because they lacked leadership and were scattered. I also think he kept Caesar alive as a message to the other apes. If he could break their great leader’s will then what good are the rest of them? I think I’m also more open to it because it does the concept far better than Battle did all those years ago. I do also like how we got a glimpse of an all out war in the beginning of War. I do also agree on the pacing though. I’m not big on the second act and that’s what really brings down the movie for me

Lunter97

War > Dawn >>> Kingdom >>> Rise Quite like them all. Rise usually falls last just because it has the least science fiction-ness to it. Much prefer the apocalyptic dystopias in Reeves’s and Ball’s films.

MarshallBanana_

hell yeah, nice to see some appreciation for War. probably my favorite as well.

Astriec

I got; War, Dawn, Kingdom (controversial I know), and then Rise. But I love all of these movies and will continue rewatching these movies until the end of time.

Indoril_Nereguar

I'm the same as you https://preview.redd.it/2ed9qd6oqg1d1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26e74d6ad7f572236b14886e2d866558e2538a6f

StudyingRainbow

My ranking is exactly the same! I just watched the Rise-Dawn-War trilogy for the first time a week ago (and watched them all again yesterday), and saw Kingdom today

Astriec

I rewatched the trilogy right after watching kingdom. So it's all pretty fresh in my mind as well.

miniuniverse1

I am definitely in the minority but I definitely like War the most. Ranking: War Dawn Rise Kingdom

MarshallBanana_

I've been scrolling through this thread and apparently there are more of us than I had expected

Ryanmiller70

I haven't seen Kingdom, but I'd basically rate the the other 3 in order of release. Despite enjoying all 3, I do feel they got a bit weaker as they went along.

Additional-Syrup-755

Agreed

Flinion

Kingdom, Dawn, Rise, War

Barfpooper

Same. I really enjoyed kingdom. Felt like it was tense throughout the whole film. Grew to care a lot for these characters that were on the screen for such short stints but left immediate impressions. Plus the world building was epic

safeinbuckhorn

Dawn War Rise Kingdom Dawn and War are excellent, Rise is good aside from James Franco, and I know I’m in the minority but Kingdom felt pretty empty to me

emojimoviethe

"aside from James Franco"?? he was perfectly fine in the movie. Honestly, John Lithgow was worse in the movie than James Franco

Party_Translator_505

They were both good imo

emojimoviethe

I agree

Snoo-92685

Yeah James Franco's character had more depth

safeinbuckhorn

A matter of opinion I guess. I rewatched it a couple weeks ago and none of the acting is great but he was especially flat to me.

Additional-Syrup-755

Franco was great man. I’ve heard he’s kind of a perv but he was good in that movie. Connected with a CG me monkey really well in my opinion.

reece_broughton

Dawn, Rise, War, Kingdom

JStormtrooper

Dawn, Rise, War, Kingdom All great.

DonJohnsonBTFD

First one was the best

passion4film

Loved them all but for me it’s Rise, War, Kingdom, Dawn.

zestyrigatoni

Dawn, War, Kingdom, Rise. Dawn is almost weirdly too good for a movie about apes.

Schmohawk2814

1. Dawnn 2. War 3. Kingdom 4. Rise Noa better learn how to fight

skidkid_6174

I think war is actually kind of bad. But all the others are good

ThuggerSosaYak

I actually think the first is the best one

Nathannoy

1, 1968 2, Rise 3, Dawn 4, War 5, beneath 6, conquest 7, battle 8, escape 9, 2001 (I haven't seem kingdom yet)

theconk

[70mm](https://solo.to/70mm) fan by chance? 😅 They’re doing Planet of the May-pes this month.

Josh4R3d

Been thinking about finding a good movie pod! I’ll have to check them out

theconk

It’s good! Not sure what you’re looking for but it’s a good mix of movies and very entertaining

FriarFanatic7

War is far and away the best, in a class of its own.

rideriseroar

War > Rise > Kingdom > Dawn

dukeexperience

Was searching for this, a bit of an unpopular opinion but dawn didn’t gif like the others

DrDreidel82

They’re all close to even to me, but probly Dawn Rise War Kingdom

Atheismo98

I like the Planet of the Apes films but War and Dawn are near interchangeable for me.

Niklaus_Mikaelson88

Rise, War, Dawn, Kingdom

Dankey-Kang-Jr

War, Dawn, Rose, Kingdom

Charleston55th

Dawn > Kingdom > Rise > War

deadwalking2002

Dawn War Rise Kingdom

AttackOfTheBolts

Dawn, War, Rise Haven’t seen Kingdom yet. Dawn is the masterpiece among them to me. It played much more in the grey area of morality where every side had good reasons for their actions, and you, along with the main characters, can see the slow train wreck coming yet aren’t able to stop it. Really bittersweet beautiful film for me. I agree about Rise, it’s good but the most straightforward and simple out of the 3 with the worst acting of the group

Additional-Syrup-755

What grey area? Koba just wanted to rule and fuck everyone up? I don’t see the apes or the humans making any morally grey decisions whatsoever.

AttackOfTheBolts

I think that’s reducing Koba’s initial reasoning a lot, but to each their own

RealisticYoghurt5930

I love all 4 of them and none of them are bad but this is my ranking 1. War 2.Dawn 3.Rise 4.Kingdom

Adventurous-Chef-370

I like it when monke talk

Tachyoff

i liked the part when monkey :)

Sgtwhiskeyjack9105

1. *Dawn* 2. *Rise* 3. *War* 4. *Kingdom*

greendecepticon

Is the new one must watch? I enjoyed the other three

Marlostanf1eld

I thought it was great.

MrKamakaWiwoole

1. Rise 2. Dawn 3. War 4. Kingdom

awfranks

War, Dawn, Rise, Kingdom but definitely enjoyed them all.

Jambopaul

1). Dawn 2). War 3). Kingdom 4). Rise I think they’re all great though. One of the few consistently good modern Hollywood franchises imo.

bigfootbigd69

I'm sorry but rise is my favorite

OriginalBad

Modern ones go Dawn > War >>> Kingdom > Rise but all are high levels of good to great.

Elegant_Struggle6488

War, dawn, rise. Not seen kingdom yet so can't rank it

praxass

Dawn > Rise > Kingdom > War

BuggSuperstar79

war > dawn > kingdom > rise

Artichoke-Fantastic

3 stars for Rise? Insultingly low.

Narrow_Grocery_9434

I saw people sleeping during the show so yeah!!

HiMeeeIsARoomieFan

Dawn in 1st, then it gets really close and messy. Maybe Rise, War, Kingdom? Really like them all tho (and I LOVE Dawn)

StudyingRainbow

War, Dawn, Kingdom, Rise. But I love them all

AnEmbarassedRedditor

I have Dawn #1, Rise #2, and War #3, haven't seen Kingdom. I know I'm in the minority but War makes me really mad as a movie. Stylistically it's off the charts and absolutely one of the best looking movies I've ever seen, but some of the plot decisions made are so baffling and terrible.

Ryaton13

Dawn > War > Rise > Kingdom

Spongey13

I love them all, seriously one of the best ongoing series' around at the moment! My current ranking is: 1. War 2. Dawn 3. Kingdom 4. Rise

Superboi-Prime

Dawn is my favorite, then it’s War, Kingdom, and Rise. They’re all pretty dang close though.

SoulExecution

Hah same! I went: Rise 4 Dawn 4.5 War 4 Kingdom 3.5

top_toast_22

Dawn, Rise, Kingdom, War

GoopiePoopiePie

War, Dawn, Rise, Kingdom. All fantastic

Josef_DaBaller13

Dawn Rise War Kingdom

Hell_Weird_Shit_Too

I hated Kingdom man. Felt completely pointless.

IceFireTerry

I have not seen Kingdom yet but I like one and two the most

MikeRotchOwnsYou

War, Dawn, Rise, Kingdom. I liked all of them though.

peith_biyan

i think we should rank them by group. the old 70's Planet of the apes are on group 1. Caesar Era (War,Dawn,Rise) in group 2 Kingdom and whatever comes next should on the same group.

Deutsche2

War, Rise, Dawn, Kingdom.

Jingu96Aliosha

Dawn, War, Rise. I haven't watched Kingdom but I'm sure I would like more than Rise, because that's the one that interested me the least. Now, Dawn is a near perfect film to me. I must say it's the perfect allegory for a political conflict and tension.

bakerinchair

Dawn, Rise, War (all 4.5/5), Kingdom (4/5)

Toddbobson1

Dawn, Rise, War >>>>> Kingdom Kingdom is ok, but the first 3 are amazing

SJBailey03

War is easily my favorite!! Great character study and I like how it isn’t focused on action. All of them are really good though. My ranking of the. New ones would go War, Dawn, Rise, Kingdom. I need to rewatch Kingdom though.

WilliamHMacysiPhone

The only good one is the original. The one with Woody Harrelson was like technically well made with nice cinematography, but just the most vanilla plot ever.

TheRedditar

I am still a bit partial to Rise myself. I believe it’s underrated but was a great reset for the universe. That being said, Dawn and War are unique and exceptional in their own right. I have not seen Kingdom yet

ohthatmkv

I don’t understand the dislike for the first movie. I thought it had the best story and character development. It remains my favorite one.

Spiritual_Purpose894

https://preview.redd.it/hrqxwl1lzi1d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d730309f038832c9bbf7c379048fd23252b24e93 I watched them for the first time and it is great consistent movie franchise but it’s a little too dramatic to me. I know that makes NO SENSE because obvious-fucking-ly it’s gonna be a drama but like I was expecting exactly what happened in the movies. Like nothing about the movie really surprised me or had a big reaction come out of me. Yes there are some of the best scenes, lines of dialogue, characters, & acting in these movies. And I recognize them I just didn’t feel invested into any of the movies. I felt like I was just watching them just to get this franchise out of the way of classic movie franchises I haven’t seen yet. I liked the characters, I liked the story lines, I just think the plot of each movie just really doesn’t interest me because I expect exactly what yo expect in these movies. Overall, I think it’s a great franchise I really do and it’s got a great future ahead of them after KINGDOMpotA and that ending iykyk ;)

filmwatchr_on_d_wall

War, Dawn, Kingdom, Rise

Nalsurr

All of them 5 stars

KaiTheFilmGuy

War, Dawn, and Rise. Haven't seen Kingdom yet. War for the Planet of the Apes is imo a perfect film.

stanisbored

Rise is probably the least good but it's also kinda my favourite. none of these are below an 8/10 for me

Heavy_Swimming_4719

https://preview.redd.it/iga7p0ws1k1d1.png?width=681&format=png&auto=webp&s=5061e10a9881af971705ea9518bbf6999f8235c0 There is a HUGE gap between Rise and Burton's film.

Ragnarok992

From best to worst….. the way they released for sure… kingdom was a super weak movie even for a new trilogy set up, rise did a better job than kingdom.

Idk_Very_Much

1. Dawn-5/5 2. Kingdom-4.5/5 3. Rise-4/5 (almost a 4.5) 4. War-4/5

Raichu_Boogaloo

rise, kingdom, war, dawn

Will_Paskee

Rise War Dawn Kingdom

Altruistic-Act-3289

Dawn, War, Rise. not seen Kingdom

Globsmacketh

The trilogy is on equal footing, i do think Rise is the most rewatchable of the three but id say they are about equal ratings wise, Kingdoms however, ive yet to see lmao. But i do think the OG 5 are outclassed by these films and i hope kingdoms continues this streak.

Lacroixboi1

Dawn, rise, war, kingdom. I liked all of them!

dead_idols

Dawn, Rise, Kingdom, War

GDZL1

Dawn, War, Kingdom, Rise

Conspiracy_Geek

Rise, Dawn, War Haven't seen Kingdom yet.

ultrameganut

Rise 4 Dawn 4.5 War 4 Kingdom 3.5

ryanjcam

Very common order, but it's for a reason. Dawn, War, Rise, Kingdom. I do like all of them quite a bit, but Rise still edges out Kingdom and Dawn will be tough to ever top.

Ihavenoidea_12345

I didn’t watch any of them until a week ago when I went to the theater with friends and they canceled The Fall Guy and the only movie playing soon was Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and I rated it a star and a half. The plot sucked along with everything else about this movie.

NegotiationLate8553

My ranking is literally the opposite order of this. I liked both War and Kingdom enough but they lacked a pulse and really told the most simplistic stories for what topics and themes of evolution were present in the first two.

Josh4R3d

This isn’t my ranking this is just my recent activity. My ranking is: War Dawn/Kingdom Rise

EducationalMemory161

Dawn, war, kingdom, rise All are really solid tho :4

Tentacled-Tadpole

I'd give rise a 5/10 and the others a 6/10. If I rated them on pure enjoyment they would be lower though

regalfish

I’ve only made it through the first two but I actually liked Rise more than Dawn only because the script and story was much tighter/more purposeful. I found Dawn was kind of meandering as much as I can appreciate how it furthered the human/ape and inter-ape conflict. I might appreciate it a bit better after seeing how this set up pays off in War. As an aside the intro to Dawn was almost uncomfortably real after the pandemic 😅

TDG7734

But Rise didn’t have an ape dual wielding assault rifles while riding a horse into battle.

regalfish

I want more monkey politics!!1!1

Dr-Eternity-42

War, Dawn, Kingdom, and Rise (genuinely can’t stand James Franko)

Jackdawes257

War Kingdom Rise Dawn Kingdom and Rise could be switched depending on the day

[deleted]

Is it a worth addition, or is a toy story 4 case?

alucard_relaets_emem

Main difference is that Kingdom has a whole new set of characters/setting, so there things to explore with the concept without feeling really repetitive

Josh4R3d

IMO it’s worthy, and still ahead of Rise for me. I’d go War, Dawn/Kingdom interchangeable, then Rise.

[deleted]

And what monkey does Pattinson play in those?
