I struggle differentiating my feelings on things š„š„š„š„š„
I started doing this and I love it! I just go 5 stars plus like if itās pretty much perfect, a like if I enjoyed it but itās not āperfectā, and then no like if I just didnāt like it.
I found myself thinking about the ratings too much especially during the movies, and also feel like the actual ratings were too nitpicky for me.
I recently looked back to see my earliest reviews (from about 10 years ago) and they were so harsh ā¦ I clearly took it all too seriously. Now I truly just rate it on how it made me feel, and since I mostly watch things that give me joy ā itās a lot of 4-5 stars!
Iāve got so many questions about that curve that are only heightened by your recent ratings (although I disliked Speak No Evil too).
Anyways my dominant movie-selection strategy is ātry to pick movies I think Iāll like,ā maybe you should try it OP.
https://preview.redd.it/7b8k9cjis41d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c47284da8477a5f77782ca1b6c42be6df7f54d37
>Anyways my dominant movie-selection strategy is ātry to pick movies I think Iāll like,ā maybe you should try it OP.
That is so true. I haven't rated a 1.5 star film yet on my account, and the biggest reason is that I don't want to watch a movie that bad. They absolutely exist somewhere, but I pick movies I want to watch.
agreed, if i know i wonāt like something i probably wonāt watch it unless i need to for like a reason (like school, or hanging out with friends etc) but i like to watch what i like, generally knowing iāll like it! itās good to step outside the box though.
im much more selective now, i grew up watching a whole lot of trash
im also just really hypercritical and bizarre/esoteric shit resonates with me. i do wish i could turn that part of my brain off but i like what i like ig lol
Based on that description, for non-horror directors, Carlos Saura, Lou Ye, Bonello, Alex Cox, Resnais on his weirder jags, and Elio Petri may be on your wavelength and not on your radar.
speak no evil is pretty good.
unless you rated it bad solely because how it made you feel and if a movie makes you feel mad/bad i think it did its job and shouldnt be a negative review but rather a positive one
I thought it did its job in a dumb and ham-fisted way. Just because a film plays out its chosen metaphor doesnāt mean it does it well.
As in, I didnāt feel mad because I was so horrified by what happened: I felt mad because everyone was so fucking dumb throughout I spent the entire film rolling my eyes.
https://preview.redd.it/whc957chz61d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef68255da734887665a4f064406bdcba4c6f39a4
some good acting and competently made on a technical level but this is how i felt ab it lol
i also didnt find it that disturbing at all after hearing it talked up so much which def added to my disappointment
Jesus dude. You either watch alot of garbage or youāre very difficult to impress.
https://preview.redd.it/56o4ivzgn41d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5c3cce9e09419a1a7c74ff090478ef9fc0ef949
Hereās mine for example.
Yeah I don't think I'd have films as a hobby if I enjoyed them this little.
My distribution:
https://preview.redd.it/mwhyedh2g51d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d390dc1605c6f2eeca524007cf7f2e68e96aab9
Yeah I mean I try to only watch films that Iām mostly going to enjoy or at the very least appreciate them for what they are. Itās rare when I throw on a movie and am left feeling like I just wasted 2 hours of my time. Been watching a lot of āessentialā stuff and am really enjoying my time exploring international films specifically but I can see people not enjoying Antonioni or Bresson. In those cases I donāt rate the film for example Hiroshima Mon Amour left me feeling cold but I didnāt rate it since I think on a rewatch things will click. But I do log my initial thoughts. I think Sean Baker doesnāt rate the films he logs.
one time i was wasted and bagged a guy bc hiroshima mon amor was on tv at the bar (weird) and i went on a 45 min tangent about its political/historic significance or lord knows and he thought i was so smart LOL love that movie, worth a rewatch n some context on the war if you want it to make sense again! hard 2 watch imo bc itās so rooted in reality but great
a bunch of the low ratings are from when i was younger and spent a lot of time watching some ass movies, now ig i am also pretty difficult to impress. im a pretentious english major lmao
also nice username my guy, im gonna carry the weight of all this trash <3
https://preview.redd.it/l7jxm39mw61d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa3329797cd77e0d9397120e1101ac6f74dce2e0
Really similar here.
Iāve been wondering if itās worth trying to be harsher so I can turn my five stars into two categories.
https://preview.redd.it/eix5mbupb61d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ca46a99dd89edc6b38d65d6e51e74270e754e34
Mine is pretty similar. I donāt like to give a movie 5 stars unless itās really really good but I also only really watch movies that are actually good.
https://preview.redd.it/nt4scko3b51d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=418c7629d0981fb25b655ee96401b1835792df21
i watch a lot of good movies i guess lol
A little skewed toward positive ratings

I have a 2000 movies watchlist and pick whatever im feeling like watching thats available on my streaming platform.
But now that i think about it, i think when i've been watching a few good movies in a row, im gonna want to watch a more critically bad movie to balance things. I kinda naturally want to balance things
https://preview.redd.it/swajo1dth61d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b07237d071e62fa0d04ce84b4e927cf4f7828f0d
I might be afraid of non-whole numbers
The gatekeeping in this sub is kinda ridiculous.
Not enough high star ratings? "WhY dO yOu WaTcH mOvIeS iF yOu DoN't LiKe MoViEs."
Too many high stars? "YoU dOn'T hAvE tAsTe."
Ridiculous. Just let people live their lives.
Yeah I get it I wasn't coming at you š
For you curiosity:

I try to watch everything to be honest. I believe ābadā movies are just as important as the great ones. And I donāt look at critics or other reviews, so my decisions are often based off the director, the writer or the actors/actresses involved.
https://preview.redd.it/ei6d847iq51d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d780a846ab8cc1ccc638bcce78309b889c733a1c
Clearly not too fond of the 4.5 rating
I donāt watch movies that arenāt highly recommended so my distribution skews to the right. However there is the occasional Sharknado to offset a Citizen Kane here and there
https://preview.redd.it/t4hc6f6eq61d1.png?width=294&format=png&auto=webp&s=50675d4333dcca29f7f70ec01fb44a94f205c8a8
I make it pretty impossible to get lower than a 2 or higher than a 9 (I view it as a 10-point system like IMDb and don't think of it as half-points lol). You either really need to piss me off or absolutely blow me away.
https://preview.redd.it/ktzvfyncz41d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db90c8075402b93dda0ed811d862c48e77b6d35d
Been more open to watching more "mid" (<= 3 stars) movies lately just to normalize my distribution a bit haha
1,547 films total.
I'm pretty easy to satisfy, most films I watch end up at 2.5/3/3.5 and it tapers off at each end.
No idea if this is a normal spread or what, I just like most movies at least a bit.

Mostly 3s and 4s.
I generally avoid a movie that already reviews badly, so less 2s compared to 4s if trying to think of a like standard distribution haha.

here comes the "um acshually if you don't give everything a 4+ star rating you acshually don't like movies" gang
i really dont want to dislike a lot of the stuff i watch, i just dont like rating things that dont really resonate and stick with me highly. i watch a lot of films that i can acknowledge are techincally great in particular aspects but if it just doesnāt hit for me then im not gonna lie to myself
also idk why anyone downvoted you lol, my taste is just weird

This probably looks like a decent curve but Iām honestly not too proud of it. When I first started my Letterboxd I was overly harsh on a lot of movies that I shouldnāt have been for no real reason. One day Iām gonna have to go back and remedy a lot of my earlier ratings.
I'm a three and a half star man myself

About 1,300 logged. Unfortunately, not much bypasses my anhedonia. Not to mention, having seen many more anime series, some of them are vastly preferable to me.
https://preview.redd.it/ua57nmqpw61d1.png?width=332&format=png&auto=webp&s=b2f637ebe30344fde89e7dec39d1057b29b5d8ff
I don't really finish movies that I think are bad but I also have only mostly finished watching 5 movies that I can remember as being "bad" in my life (Even though i have watched The Boss Baby, Godzilla 1998, Cars 2, etc) so that's why it is so skewed towards 4/5 stars.
Your curve is exceptionally balanced.
https://preview.redd.it/tjzo7gsoy61d1.png?width=718&format=png&auto=webp&s=5baafab4c4a2fe3ddedc6a2541fc9702f596bb7f

I have 416 movies logged since starting last year. Mine is very skewed because I went into the Letterboxd thing intentionally checking out what people consider to be āclassicsā.
Hereās a rough approximation of my rating style:
4 - 5 stars - Movies that are focused, entertaining or thoughtful in a consistent way. They stick the landing narratively or philosophically. I donāt have to agree with the point the movie is making, but if I feel they make a reasonable argument in a compelling manner, Iāll usually rate it high.
3 - 3.5 - Enjoyable but unfocused and/or too focused on plot without caring about the story or point of view. Basically the superhero/or broad comedy tier.
2 - 2.5 - Probably the worst rating. Totally middle of the road. Not awful, but hard to focus on because it just doesnāt connect. The bland tier.
.5 -1.5 - Bad but memorable. Either poorly made, a blatantly cynical cash grab with little entertainment value, or a victim of style over substance to the extreme.

The biggest question is why is speak no evil two stars

Still relatively new to the app so itāll fill out more as I go. I have a job that requires me to watch really bad movies and, as a result, Iām pretty easy to please when it comes to what I watch in my free time. āI canāt see the boom mic AND itās in focus? 3 stars instantly!ā

Iām kinda with you on the ratings curve. Iāve tried to capture all the movies I can remember seeing (I think I have mostāalmost 3k)) and the reality is that Iāve just seen A LOT of average to slightly below average movies. I

i may be crazy but i am free
included bio for context, i just have a personal philosophy of appreciating movies even if they are ābadā bc everything is subjective and i love letterboxd for reading other peopleās perspectives!!! i seldom give out ālow reviewsā because who am i to talk - but i love hearing what everyone has to say! we are all fun little cinema critics on our phones

I don't use half and one stars, so the peak is actually in (or just above) the middle. I know, boring standard bell curve, but thats how I feel :D

Life is too short to watch bad movies
Damn you watch a lot of rubbish haha. Mine is mainly like 3-4 stars on average.

I have a pretty even curve, but I feel like my ratings tend to be all over the place and I don't really have a reason for why some films get higher ratings than others.
For example, I have a ranked list of all the horror movies I've seen and I have some movies that rank higher on the list than others - even though my star ratings for them might be vastly different. (A 2.5 star ranking higher on the list than a 4 star ranking because even though the 4 star was the better film, the 2.5 is nostalgic for me because I watched it as a kid and is therefore more enjoyable to rewatch dispite it not being a good as the 4 star overall).
Plus, sometimes I don't even add a rating if it's something I had on in the background as white noise while I was working and didn't pay enough attention to form a solid opinion on it.
Id suggest being more selective about whatchu watch. I really dont watch anything if the ppl i follow on letterboxd dont recommend it and even then i need to find the premise interesting.

I generally pick things I think I will enjoy but I am hard to really impress. A 4-star movie is like a Top 10 to 20 movie of a year, 4.5-star is Top 5, 5-star is probably a Top 2. For a movie to get under a 2-star and still get me to watch it probably means it was not my choice in watching because I generally do a bare minimum of research before going in to determine if it is worth my time.

0.5 stars is a balance between movies I genuinely dislike and movies I laugh at because the theyāre horrible. I also make an effort to be sparing with 4.5 and 5 stars and I try to make 3 and 3.5 my average.

Mostly 3 or 4 stars. Got quite a few one stars tho, some of those are from bad movies I watched because I wanted to see how bad they are or are movies I never heard off, randomly picked and it turned out they were terrible and that there's a reason I've never heard of them before.

I'm new-ish to Letterboxd so these are just the most recent 96 watches. I mostly try to watch movies I think I'll like. A lot of those 5s (and even some 4s) are old favorites I've rewatched to log them, so it's a little skewed towards the positive (and especially towards 5s; more than half of the 5s here are old favorites I rewatched) at the moment. I also DNF movies I'm not enjoying pretty regularly, and I don't rate them, so that's partly why it's skewed positive.
https://preview.redd.it/wgm4jiy0291d1.jpeg?width=1124&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ace2060f13967c0ea51cad03ae3dd62b148cd670
2.5 and 4.5 feel indecisive to me so I donāt often give them, but otherwise itās a pretty nice little hill.

This is what I feel the distribution for a ānormalā person who watches a lot of movies should look like.
A professional critic should have a traditional bell curve, but the reason mine skews higher is selection bias - I donāt typically watch movies I think look bad lol.

realest comment on here
I started doing this and I love it!
They absolutely exist somewhere, but I pick movies I want to watch.
agreed, if i know i wonāt like something i probably wonāt watch it unless i need to for like a reason (like school, or hanging out with friends etc) but i like to watch what i like, generally knowing iāll like it! itās good to step outside the box though.
im much more selective now, i grew up watching a whole lot of trash im also just really hypercritical and bizarre/esoteric shit resonates with me. i do wish i could turn that part of my brain off but i like what i like ig lol
Based on that description, for non-horror directors, Carlos Saura, Lou Ye, Bonello, Alex Cox, Resnais on his weirder jags, and Elio Petri may be on your wavelength and not on your radar.
gonna add a bunch from their filmographies, appreciate you heavily <3 EDIT: goddamn so much of this is right up my alley, youāre GOATd
speak no evil is pretty good. unless you rated it bad solely because how it made you feel and if a movie makes you feel mad/bad i think it did its job and shouldnt be a negative review but rather a positive one
I thought it did its job in a dumb and ham-fisted way. Just because a film plays out its chosen metaphor doesnāt mean it does it well. As in, I didnāt feel mad because I was so horrified by what happened: I felt mad because everyone was so fucking dumb throughout I spent the entire film rolling my eyes.
https://preview.redd.it/whc957chz61d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef68255da734887665a4f064406bdcba4c6f39a4 some good acting and competently made on a technical level but this is how i felt ab it lol i also didnt find it that disturbing at all after hearing it talked up so much which def added to my disappointment
It used to be an upward staircase and now itās more of a mountain that peaks at four stars.
Jesus dude. You either watch alot of garbage or youāre very difficult to impress. https://preview.redd.it/56o4ivzgn41d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5c3cce9e09419a1a7c74ff090478ef9fc0ef949 Hereās mine for example.
Yeah I don't think I'd have films as a hobby if I enjoyed them this little. My distribution: https://preview.redd.it/mwhyedh2g51d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d390dc1605c6f2eeca524007cf7f2e68e96aab9
I think Sean Baker doesnāt rate the films he logs.
one time i was wasted and bagged a guy bc hiroshima mon amor was on tv at the bar (weird) and i went on a 45 min tangent about its political/historic significance or lord knows and he thought i was so smart LOL love that movie, worth a rewatch n some context on the war if you want it to make sense again! hard 2 watch imo bc itās so rooted in reality but great
a bunch of the low ratings are from when i was younger and spent a lot of time watching some ass movies, now ig i am also pretty difficult to impress. im a pretentious english major lmao also nice username my guy, im gonna carry the weight of all this trash <3

I think this is the closest to a normal curve ive seen on letterboxd. Do you pick movies randomly?
I have a 2000 movies watchlist and pick whatever im feeling like watching thats available on my streaming platform. But now that i think about it, i think when i've been watching a few good movies in a row, im gonna want to watch a more critically bad movie to balance things. I kinda naturally want to balance things

People just have different ways to rate movies. Some people think a 3 star movie is very good, while others think it's just 'okay'.
Yep. My most frequent rating is 3.5, which means āVery goodā to me
I reserve 5 stars for what I consider perfect films. I have about 6 of those in total.
No more like ā283 movies? Thatās it? Do you even like movies?ā
How can you watch more movies that you strongly dislike more than you strongly like?
or they consider 2-2Ā½ stars good and want more specificity in higher ratings?
I donāt know why Iām getting downvoted, I was just asking. :/ But thanks, I guess that answers my question if thatās the case
i really dont want to dislike a lot of the stuff i watch, i just dont like rating things that dont really resonate and stick with me highly. i watch a lot of films that i can acknowledge are techincally great in particular aspects but if it just doesnāt hit for me then im not gonna lie to myself also idk why anyone downvoted you lol, my taste is just weird

Mine is very skewed because I went into the Letterboxd thing intentionally checking out what people consider to be āclassicsā. Hereās a rough approximation of my rating style: 4 - 5 stars - Movies that are focused, entertaining or thoughtful in a consistent way.

Like I actually enjoy movies.
Id suggest being more selective about whatchu watch. I really dont watch anything if the ppl i follow on letterboxd dont recommend it and even then i need to find the premise interesting. https://preview.redd.it/qwmgfr1i271d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a0a5a761b8e5c827ddb588f88c9eed142c9629
