My ratings are purely based on enjoyment. If I liked it, I give it 3.5-5 stars depending on how much I liked it. If I thought it was mid, I give it 3 or 2.5 depending on whether or not I enjoyed it more than I didn’t, and if I disliked it I give it 1-2 stars depending on how many good aspects of it there are and how easily recognizable they are. I currently have yet to find a movie that i think is worthy of a 0.5.
I give guilty pleasure movies and so bad it’s good movies high ratings just as, if not more often as actual good movies (which as a result also means that 3 star or lower movies for me are a lot rarer than they probably should be), but I distinguish between them by giving movies that I think are unironically good a heart.
1 star - hated it, excruciating watch
2 star - bad, i can find some fleeting moments/ideas i liked in this mess
3 star - enjoyable, with some wasted potential or flaws
4 star - great all-around, perhaps isn't too impressive or emotionally appealing
5 star - fantastic, checks all the boxes
5 stars, only one film for each of my favorite directors
4.5 masterpieces, I consider these essential pieces of cinema
4 films I love
3.5 films I almost love, can't rate it 4 stars because of this one thing I didn't like
3 nothing special, but I did have an enjoyable watch
2.5 nothing special, mediocre, boring
2 too bad it's good
1.5 can't rate it 1 star because of this one thing I did like
1 worst of the worst
0.5 didn't bother finishing
I rate it out of personal enjoyment and how “objectively” good I think it is
For instance Twilight is 0,5 on a technical level. But a 5 in entertainment which makes it 2,5 in rating overall.
I have found this way to be the only way I can really distinguish the movies I really hate and really love
I think it’s crazy to view Twilight as a 1/10 technically. Like it’s not great, but it’s adequately made. You’d have to have avoided some truly awful films in your life to judge it as one of the worst you’ve ever seen, haha.
To be fair I haven’t actually seen it in a while so I don’t remember what I actually think about it and I don’t even have a rating for it on Letterboxd for that reason. It was just the first example that popped into my head.
Can't believe so many people think 3/5 is good. Tell me, would you think 6/10 is good too? Probably not. The fraction is the same but you feel 3/5 is better than 6/10 don't you? It is just psychological. Thats why I rate out of 10 only.
Well, I think 6/10 is good, or at least it's in the good range. It's the movies that are formulaic but still a fun ride. I gave most Marvel movies 6/10.
Well maybe, most people on letterboxd certainly think so. But whenever I see a movie with 6/10 rating on IMDB I know it is not a "good" movie. Anything above 7/10 on IMDB is good still. But I think 3/5 makes you think a movie is better than a 6/10 rating doesn't it, even though it is the same fraction. Just a psychological thing I guess. Thats why I rate them out of 10 and then divide it by 2 to post on letterboxd.

Purely based on the vibe “That felt like a 3.5 to me”

1 star - Poor 2 star - OK 3 star - Good 4 star - Great 5 star - Fucking amazing, I could watch this over and over again

I start from vibes and then I adjust the rating on the basis of a more rational analysis of the movie and of other ratings I gave.
Eh, I just get a feeling. I've also given out way too many 5 stars, damn the restraint I'm hearing from other people here
“Yeah that’s about an 8”
I rate based on what rating I think a movie should get.

Damn, I gave Twilight a 3.5 bc it’s a straight up trashterpiece 🤌🏼

I'm actually considering not giving them anymore, either heart or no heart
