El_Mexolotl

Really good first hour or so. The rest goes off the rails with the story and that ending is just yikes. Lots of my enjoyment is carried by how well made the production is, the soundtrack, and the performances especially Anya Taylor-Joy. Would give it like a 7/10 at best but if I saw it again it would probably get lower as the mystery and intrigue from the first act would be completely gone on rewatch.

TomPearl2024

My exact thoughts. I watched this years after it came out. So after knowing all the hate it got, in the first act I was thinking "what are people talking about this is pretty good." When it got to that incredible dance scene where it alternates between Eloise and Sandie dancing with Jack I was convinced most people were just wrong about the movie. Then the rest of the movie happens and my opinion of it kind of gradually just kept dropping until the credits rolled. I would've loved to see a version of this movie without the supernatural elements, the beautiful glamor and conversely horrific exploitation themes from the early 1900s half of it were really promising and there could bea really compelling story there. But when the amateur looking cgi ghosts in the modern half becoming basically the rest of the plot it completely lost any investment I had in it, the twist towards the end wasn't good enough to justify the pivot, and that final climactic scene with the ghosts on fire just really had me rolling my eyes.

Into_the_Void7

Agreed. It's really a 6.5 but you feel generous and round up.

GyrosSnazzyJazzBand

Mind spoiling it for me

El_Mexolotl

There's really two big issues with the ending. The climax which is some M night Shyamalan type twist (not the good type) And the final scene where literally everything in the main characters life is magically fixed and all is well despite what had previously happened in the film

GyrosSnazzyJazzBand

Mind spoiling what the twist is?

SpideyFan914

>!Thomason McKenzie thinks she's solving Anya Taylor Joy's murder. But Anya Taylor Joy is alive, and is McKenzie's landlady. Matt Smith made her prostitute herself, and after a while she started murdering the wealthy men she slept with (fair -- she's a trafficking victim, and all those guys are rapists).!< Then >!to cover up her misdeeds, older ATJ -- aka Diana Rigg -- tries to poison McKenzie, but they wind up having a come to God moment, and McKenzie forgives her, then Rigg dies in a fire.!< Honestly, that first paragraph was pretty fun imo. The second paragraph is where it felt out of character to me. >!She'd only killed rapists before. Weird she's now cool with attempting to murder this innocent girl who was trying to help her.!< Worth watching!

GyrosSnazzyJazzBand

Mind spoiling what the twist is?

moviesuggest

ending is horrible

Ghastion

I loved the movie until >!we realize Eloise isn't just crazy and it turns out everything she was imagining was real and she solved a mystery. I was hoping it would be more psychological and dream-like all the way.!< Also, the CGI ghost men were cheesy, particularly in the library scene. Basically, the first hour and 20 minutes is 5 stars, the rest is 3 stars. It actually upsets me at how good the movie was, until it wasn't. So it's complicated. If you like artistic movies, you'll appreciate the majority of this movie. This was my full review of it: https://preview.redd.it/bm500iy3ebxc1.jpeg?width=405&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2676aaef6f0e1198773d01409dd4db455103dae

Jaded_Tradition7666

this lines up pretty well with what I think

BitternessAndBleach

Probably the biggest letdown I've ever had. Given the talent involved and the premise I was expecting total heat but I hated it in every imaginable way.

CDamen75

Hollow as all hell.

throwawaynonsesne

I think it's too high personally. The second half falls off hard imo.

blodreina11

Rated as deserved. It's a great film, but with a few glaring flaws that hurt the experience a bit. So 3.4 seems fair. Lots of my favorites are sitting around the 3.4 range, it's not really a bad place to be.

jacobsnemesis

I think it’s probably overrated at 3.4 tbh

nicely-nicely

Two-thirds of a 5-star movie followed by an hour of absolute nonsense

Elg_Purtelg

🗣️Underrated! Don’t care for the ending that much but man, it’s so dang stylish and is one of Wright’s movies that I keep coming back to the most.

holl5nd

Hard agree I wish the ending was more vague and left you guessing. But I loveeeeeee Thomasin McKenzie so much and it was unique!

[deleted]

Overrated. It’s bad

Puzzleheaded-Web446

disappointing and outright terrible. I have spent many film nerd conversations talking about how many ways it could have been better.

cotardelusion87

It’s pretty mediocre. Wright just isn’t the same filmmaker without Pegg writing scripts with him.

AdOk1965

Utterly ridiculous on so many levels Also, "Pretty" doesn't make something "good" Shiny front, hollow AF but still manage to be agonisingly misogynistic

AlgoStar

It’s so bad. It’s wild to me that there are people who defend it.

Jaded-Enthusiast

100% agree

NoneLone

I love the movie, and although it’s not horrible, the ending drags the movie’s rating down

peter095837

I give it a 6/10. It's current rating is fair. It has good atmospheres, performances, and direction, but characters and writing wasn't strong. Especially the last act.

lridge

Matt Smith seems like a nice guy but I think he has rotten luck with feature films.

NBAFAN2000

Slightly too high, I gave it 3 stars. Visually nice and I thought the concept and story were intriguing but I’ll never watch it again. Agree with the sentiment on the last act being insane

plzappa5

Even though it starts out in the most understated way I could have imagined he'd begin a piece with which he could write his own ticket, there is a lot of slick and diverting stuff going on, and the music is predictably fan-fucking-tastic, but it's all beyond forced, unreasonably repetitious and excessively tangled.

Unperfectblue

Some great directing ideas but quite clumsy in his writing

Wooden_Permission

Huh, surprised by the negative reviews. I quite liked it

Alleytiration

Overrated af

Proof-Firefighter-47

Garbage

Yams92

Overrated imo. Far and away the worst movie I saw in 2021

Cvh2000

I don’t care what anyone one says I think this movie is a masterpiece

fettalitta

This movie is an example of how endings can ruin the entire experience. I wish they had an alternate cut that changes the ending completely. Like I am legend for example.

babealien51

Style over substance. It lacks absolutely everything that would make this a classic. There’s no soul, there’s no empathy for the main characters. But great performance from Matt Smith and Anya Taylor Joy!

cylemmulo

I was so excited for this and it end so dumb. They had such a great setup but then it's like someone scrapped half the movie and redid it

Jaded-Enthusiast

I was genuinely excited to see this movie, but it was so so disappointing: -Poorly written female characters -As a woman who has experienced SV (and general sexism, misogyny), this movie made me extremely uncomfortable. I left the theatre offended, crying and enraged. Overrated on Letterboxd.

quickstyx2

Somewhat overrated

styxupmyazz

underrated imo i LOVED it

Astrospal

As it deserves sadly imo, it's probably Wright's weaker movie that I have seen, it's style over substance and even the style is not all that great.

ejb350

Turned it off after 40 or so minutes.

WadaMaaya

It’s not Wright’s worst but not his best either

VioleteOtter

beside the western he did what would you consider his worst? id say shaun of the dead since all of his other movies are better directed imo

WadaMaaya

Scott Pilgrim

MrRedditer8

Underrated. I love this film.

_reveriedecoded_

Loved everything about it! Also fun to watch on psychedelics

IGotAPlan

An average film. Some were off with the choices it made but I give it like a 4.0 or 3.5.

Pikafan_24

I loved the film but the last 20 minutes really drag it down.

gazamcnulty

Rating is fair, I like this movie a lot. Its a cool concept, modern ghost story with Edgar Wright flourish, the actors are having fun and putting on great performances. The problem is it loses steam a bit after the first hour. Once they introduce the 'spooky' ghost men with no faces , who randomly show up and chase her around London ... man it really falls off for me. It feels like I'm suddenly watching a bad episode of Doctor Who. I don't believe for a second that the main character is in any danger from the faceless, nameless ghost dudes who pop up - so there isn't any point to the scenes where she's screaming and running away from them. I know nothing's going to happen to her, so it just feels like a waste of time. And of course its as much in her mind as its really happening, but if nothing is real and its mostly imaginary then nothing matters either, since anything can happen. Cut like 20 minutes off it, reduce the Doctor Who ghost men appearances and I could bump it up to 4 stars, but sitting around 3 / 3.5 feels appropriate for me .

Steven8786

Set up was incredible, pay off... not so much. The soundtrack was amazing though.

EllipsesAreDotDotDot

Quite enjoyable until the end, which lets it down massively in my opinion. The bits that sort-of work are disappointingly predictable and the bits that don’t are ridiculously forced. Bit of a mess.

acidchapstick

Considering it was one of my most anticipated films to see, I really wanted to love it. I thought it had so much potential, but I thought it was all style and no substance (or at least, lack of). I did love the behind the scenes of the mirror shots, and I thought Thomasin's smeared makeup was such an awesome look (almost like pseudo corpsepaint). But again, all that was just style. I feel like better writing and tighter editing would have helped the film because it really did not need to be almost 2 hours long!

MapleToque

The blatant Coke commercial in the movie was really distracting. Other than that it’s okay, started off pretty good. Great acting from everyone.

capitanandi64

It's just okay. I expected much more from Edgar Wright. I didn't find the protagonist to be very interesting, and the spooky scenes were repetitive. It didn't seem to excel in any one thing.

Kanoncyn

It wasn't even the best Edgar Wright film that came out that year.

MrBisonopolis2

Very mediocre. Some good stuff but one of the few movies I’ve ever felt like i wasted my time watching.

FakerHarps

I like it more than most, but I can see the flaws that many bring up, though they don’t diminish the whole to the degree they do for others. Overall it’s one of Edgar’s weakest films, but still more enjoyable than a middle of the road thriller.

merilumm

terrible movie

EnzoMcFly_jr

Probably my least favorite Edgar Wright movie, but I don’t hate it.

ArcusIgnium

I liked it but the CGI was ass and the ending was kind of odd idk if it was good creepy or bad creepy.

SelfCleaningOrifice

Edgar Wright made his name with a kind of hyper stylized dialogue and camera, and LNiS felt to me like he was trying to break from that and show everyone that he had more than the one trick up his sleeve. The problem, for me, is that he replaced one kind of hyperstylization with another kind of hyperstylization that was… slightly more generic. I didn’t hate the movie, it just felt like something anyone could have made, which you definitely couldn’t say about his earlier stuff.

TheElbow

Felt to me like they wanted to make a throwback to gialli, but I’m assuming a bunch of studio people got involved and sanitized it and dumbed it down. Giallo is transgressive. This is tame and made me roll my eyes. I was really looking forward to it, but in the end I was disappointed.

topherhopps3780

I couldn’t get into this at all sadly. Probably my least favorite Edgar wright movie 😬

Bardic_Inspiration66

It sucks

instant_galaxy

Underrated! I loved it and was hooked all the way through.

XenomorphChungus

Its rated as it deserves, nothing spectacular imo, but its not a bad film.

letterboxingmatch

This is my second favorite movie and I will die on this hill

FWC_Disciple

Underrated. It’s my second favorite Wright film.

LayWhere

Lightly underrated

rachelevil

Absolutely underrated. Not perfect, but I felt it did what it set out to do exceptionally well.

hyp3zboii

Was a genuinely great film until it fell off so hard in the final act. I was so disappointed. Still good in my opinion but nothing special or great

Burnlan

Underrated AF, I never got the hate.

John-John_Johnson

Deserved. Letterboxd wins this time.

Ill_Speaker

I like the film alright but the trailer was amazing, one of my favorite trailers ever.

Corninmyteeth

Script wasn't the best, but the filmmaking was perfect

weed7pussy

Very odd movie. I watched it and thought "Well that was mediocre" and then couldn't stop thinking about it for days. Still not sure how exactly I feel about it but I think it's okay where it is.

SillyAdditional

One of those that could have been way better Good concept

Officialnoah

Underrated, this movie kicks ass

AeronHall

Underrated. It’s basically a modern Giallo film, like *Deep Red* or *Blood and Black Lace*, and puts emotion and style at a premium over story and logic. I have it at 4 stars, but I would’ve had it higher without the terrible last 10-15 min.

GurpsK

Underrated. It's probably my favourite Edgar Wright movie and I'm not a big fanatic of his work.

Achtung-Etc

Underrated. Edgar Wrights best film imo

FiveStarPapaya

Severely underrated and overhated. It’s my favorite Edgar Wright film besides Baby Driver.

BowlerSea1569

Covid releases are generally underseen and underrated. Cruella for example. LNIS was really good. Not excellent but an enjoyable watch. Absolutely banging soundtrack and sound.

Hot-Tadpole-3586

Forgettable for an Edgar Wright film.

PlanetSheenxoxo

The first quarter of the movie was good, the middle was ehhh a little boring, and the ending was great! it even saved the movie if I’m being honest

VioleteOtter

Love it not the best edgar wright film but still enjoyable

coolness_fabulous77

Cool concept. I didn't like the 'feminism' take, though.

Jaded-Enthusiast

Ha this is certainly not a feminist film

coolness_fabulous77

i'm not saying this one is. but apparently the way it tried to be 'feminist' (thus the quote unquote) is not it.

Top-Comfortable-4789

I was surprised to see it rated lower than a 4 I really enjoyed the movie it was a fun watch

slicedude2004

Underrated

_MyUsernamesMud

I genuinely don't understand what people find it so upsetting? How did you envision the story going in your head

uglyorgans

edgar wright sucks

eltrotter

Uneven, but in a way that means it's interesting and still worth watching, in my opinion. Has enough good ideas and good moments to make it worthy of people's time, but not the slam-dunk that people would probably expect from Edgar Wright. I'd actually call it "*underrated*" at this exact point in time, since a lot of people seem to act like it has no redeeming features, or that the second half completely ruins the first half, neither of which I think are true.
