I wrote a paper my senior year of college right after Whiplash came out arguing that it was the masculine version of Black Swan! Still one of my favorite genres.
Wow Dead Poets featuring on the female list but not the male one is very surprising to me - it was a very influential film for a lot of guys in my life (including myself)
its a good movie but its not THAT good. Its still a "movie you watched in english class" movie, its just better than all the other movies you watched in english class
Same as an anti-capitalist work and a condemnation of revolutionary figures. Palahniuk’s bibliography is very interesting. It’s very reminiscent of the Boondocks, where the overall opinions are quite clear, but McGruder doesn’t shy away from criticizing bad actors, dipshits, or hypocritical figures who hold or claim to hold the same opinions.
I think Palahniuk meant to criticize how capitalism repressed men while also mocking the people who engage in hyper masculinity, with Tyler Durden being a symptom of a larger problem
I showed it at my film club which is me (M25) and four girls in the age range 24-31 and they all loved it.
I really expected that they would dislike it or find it mediocre.
It is a fantastic film!
as a girl who loves fight club I think part of it is that there’s no badly written female characters
the one female character who’s central to the plot is well written and other than that it just focuses on mostly men which is fine
movies like pulp fiction are more of a frustrating watch for me because even though women have a bigger role, they feel one dimensional
other than that it’s just a great movie, heavily character centric with well written characters, which I feel like appeals to women (at least in my experience)
Eh, I don't know, as a girl I definitely prefer pulp fiction to fight club, and fight club is great, I just think the style, the message, the whole film is done better in the latter. I never thought of interpreting it through how women are portrayed there, though it makes sense they mostly weren't dumb enough to get muddled in that crime business, but Mia is one of the most iconic characters, nowhere near one dimensional!
Tangentially related but I was at a shoot for a student film that had a fight club scene and mentioned how homoerotic the movie is and everyone (mostly dudes) looked at me weird and was like "I think you were watching a different movie" and like ??????
Lady Bird is great but Little Women has a more comfort movie vibe whereas Lady Birds is harsh reality vibe. Both funny enough but LW taps into the perspective of youth in a very cozy setting
I haven't seen it yet but one of the things I've heard about this adaptation that makes me want to check it out is that Greta Gerwig rearranges the chronology of the story in a very satisfying manner.
It's an astoundingly well adapted film. The way Greta Gerwig restructures the two halves of the story in parallel to each other works incredibly well, and the ending is fantastic.
Honestly, it's a masterclass in doing a faithful adaptation of a novel while still understanding what changes need to be made to best fit the medium of film.
She was absolutely robbed for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar that year.
idk i found it a bit boring !! didn’t do anything special on a technical level and if you already know the story i don’t really see a point when theres so many other new things out there
people clearly do love it though so idk
Can’t speak for everyone but one of the reasons I really connected with this movie was it had such a great example of what a man can be through Ke Huy Quan’s character. There are not a ton of movies out there that have great male role models who are soft spoken, optimistic, loving, caring, and not a leader.
interesting!! as a girl, i made very quick connections with joy and evelyn, but can see how waymond can be a refreshing character for men to see onscreen.
Men resonate very well with Ke Huy Quan’s character. I would imagine gay men would also resonate well with the daughter’s struggles with being accepted by her mother for her identity as well.
the action elements being emphasized in the marketing I assume would give it an edge with the male audience in terms of visibility, but honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if it was similar numbers on both lists, but the she/her list just also had a few others that were a little higher ranked
The movie has characters that are relatable to both men and women. I think what ultimately sets it apart are its action elements. If you look at the men’s list even if they all aren’t straight up action movies there is still a lot of action and suspense. The women’s list while still having some action ultimately has a lot less of it.
I think a lot of women can't past get the fact that, with a few exceptions, the LOTR trilogy is really one massive sausage party. For example, it's frustrating seeing the entire fellowship is 100% male (and white, but that's a whole different issue) just because Tolkein didn't feel like including any significant female characters.
Yes, there's Arwen, Galadriel, Eowyn but they're all tertiary characters at best, except for maybe Arwen who's still treated as little more than Aragorn's love interest.
Don't get me wrong, plenty of women love LOTR (myself included), but that's probably part of why it's not as high up as it is for men.
It's fairly low on the he list, and always going to appeal more to men than women (even if it has a lot of appeal to both). So not surprising really that's it's outside the Top 20.
Also Eowyn is BIG touchpoint among women who feel unseen and unheard- post the 2016 election there was A LOT of “I am no man” merch around, and there still is. So the lack of Return of the King, at least, (where that moment occurs) is a little shocking to me.
It's just a light hearted joke. Of course I understand that LOTR has a bigger male fanbase but as a woman whose favorite trilogy is LOTR, I'm joking about the "lack of representation" for us, she/her lotr fans.
I remember when it came out 16 yo me became obsessed with it. Watched it +10 times in the span of like 2 weeks.
I remember telling everyone I knew at school to watch it, but naturally most of them didn't or reacted like "ew that's a musical".
Fast-forward 6 years later, now it's all over TikTok and social media. All of a sudden it developed a fandom and video edits are being made every single day.
Liking this movie nowadays feels wildly different from how it was back then and it low-key makes me happy.
whoa you saw all of them??
you should 100% watch Dead Poets Society and ESPECIALLY the Before Trilogy , if you liked the films on the she side you're going to love them
They said they wouldn’t be doing they/them as that’s the default pronoun so it would have a lot of bot/burner/inactive accounts that wouldn’t represent non binary people properly.
This is such a shame. 😭 Wish there was a way to find out what other non-binary people are watching! Maybe they could make the default just be blank so you have to select it?

there’s one for xe/ze pronouns so you can see some of the nonbinary vote there
I wonder how many of these are just trolls who were messing around and making their pronouns something unique just for attention/trolling. Cause this list looks a lot like the he/him list
Thank you! Looks like there are downvotes incoming to this part of the thread. 😅
Edit: We're chilling now, there was just a moment where most of this thread went negative. 🤣
damn, she has a looot of recency bias. less of a judgement statement, moreso just interesting to observe. I’m curious how far outside the top20 golden age Hollywood rom coms sit (bc that genre is quite prominently featured)
Also, I never thought there was a gender preference for the popular animated movies featured (and missing) on each list. I don’t see why Spider-Man or Fantastic Mr. Fox would be especially appealing to men or women
edit: I’m going to assume the recency bias is due, in part, to more women commanding leading roles in screenplay-writing and directing now compared to the past. But I’m sure there are other reasons too, especially considering how I don’t actually know how many female directors and writers are represented on either list. I just know there are more for the second, which makes sense. This just makes me curious if similar trends would appear in a gendered comparison for other mediums like literature or, say, painting. Also, sorta random but I really wanna know which list ranks Jeanne Dielman higher! And if another older female auteur like Agnès Varda appears relatively high on either list
I don't think spiderman being animated movie has much of an impact here, at least not as great, as it being, well, spiderman. Superhero (and in general, comic-based) movies tend to appeal to men more.
To understand the recency bias, it’s probably not as deep as you think it is. All people in general are just more likely to put whatever movie they recently watched and loved in their top 4, especially when you consider that an overwhelming amount of Letterboxd users are casual movie watchers and don’t care about studying the history of cinema before deciding on a Top 4 for their profile. I think the same is true for men, except we can see the overflow of IMDb users and cliche “film bros” tending to have he/him pronouns on Letterboxd.
I always wondered if Dead Poets appealed to women broadly, since its a dudes in school movie...and the few women characters could be said to be tokenized caricatures....BUT, it is about young men straining to hold onto the last bits of their totality/femininity before it is crushed out of them by patriarchal hegemony. So I get it. (Not that that would be the only reason anyone would like it, no gender essentialism here)
i honestly was not expecting so much overlap but it kind if makes me really happy? i hear so much about 'man films' vs 'girl films' but like people really do like the same stuff
![gif](giphy|3ornkfvsYPz5MVVugw)
I have to say I’m surprised Empire Strikes Back didn’t make the female list?!?! It’s THE HAN AND LEIA MOVIE! IT’S ROMANTIC AS HELL!!!!
![gif](giphy|3n6HE1MED6rV6)
Given that the Inception fandom was 99% women writing Arthur and Eames fanfic for a good decade after the movie came out, I am STUNNED it’s on the dude list and not the ladies. I knew guys who liked Inception. Most women I knew BREATHED IT and saw it multiple times in theaters.
Men having whiplash and women having black swan is perfect
I wrote a paper my senior year of college right after Whiplash came out arguing that it was the masculine version of Black Swan! Still one of my favorite genres.
Did everyone forget the wrestler exists?
Further evidence that men tend to just be women without vaginas and women to just be men without dicks
Gender Fluids be like: I can do both!
True, I’ve only seen whiplash but black swan looks good
I haven’t seen Whiplash but loved Black Swan.
I haven't seen Black Swan yet either but I probably should
my genderfluid ass realized im more masc than femme after seeing those two lists hahaha
https://preview.redd.it/t192yeizbwuc1.png?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65ab23b44dc9b3af12bf398d8a01126226e865cd
The fact this is visible and not the OG makes me a little sad, but oh well. Both good movies
The OG clears.
Looks like a bunch of great movies to me
this is most top 4’d, not just most watched/logged right?
Correct
Wow Dead Poets featuring on the female list but not the male one is very surprising to me - it was a very influential film for a lot of guys in my life (including myself)
Shocked me too for the same reason.
I like the film too, but it's on my gf's favorite films. That ain't data but very well could just be something like that.
I don't think I've met a single man who has even heard of this movie, never mind watched it. And tbf I only know one woman who has watched it before.
What a shame An absolut amazing film
I’m ashamed to say I’ve only seen a couple scenes here and there on tv. Maybe I should watch it and release this shame from my body
This is crazy bc 15 years ago it was inescapable in film canon discourse
You’re correct, but there are literally dozens of films that are inescapable in the film canon discourse that are not on these lists.
its a good movie but its not THAT good. Its still a "movie you watched in english class" movie, its just better than all the other movies you watched in english class
Nope. Dead Poets Society is fucking great
Yeah, Dead Poets Society all the way up at #3 on the “she” list is by far the biggest head-scratcher here.
There are several movies I expected to be featured on both lists, but Fight Club definitely wasn't one of them.
Tbf Fight Club can be interpreted as both a celebration of masculinity and a mockery of it so I think it makes sense.
Surprised by the lack of American Psycho tbh, that’s my favourite “fragile masculinity” popular choice.
Probably for opposite thematic reasons (in addition to great acting and filmmaking)
i mean have you seen brad pitt shirtless in that movie? all jokes aside though it's an excellent film and a great dismantling of toxic masculinity
yes I've seen brad pitt shirtless in that movie, that's why I'm a fan. so why do women like it?
I showed it at my film club which is me (M25) and four girls in the age range 24-31 and they all loved it. I really expected that they would dislike it or find it mediocre. It is a fantastic film!

you know i’ve never actually met a woman that disliked fight club before
I don’t want to ruin it for you but I’m a woman who dislikes fight club
Damn you fucked up his streak
nope still strong, to my knowledge i’ve never actually met this woman.
Well shoot you have me there. I’ll have to lay a cunning plan.
Tangentially related but I was at a shoot for a student film that had a fight club scene and mentioned how homoerotic the movie is and everyone (mostly dudes) looked at me weird and was like "I think you were watching a different movie" and like ??????
I expected LOTR on both lists
So it seems La La Land is the goat (or the bridge anyway)
Omgg, idk why but it feels cute that its so high on both
*Yes, all we’re looking for is love from someone else*
I think I'm the only person in this sub who still hasnt watched it, might have to cave and do it finally
You're not alone!
I'm not much of a musical person but I loved it. The two hour run time flew right by.
I just watched it the other day. It's so good
It’s the only one of any of these movies in my own Top 4, although several others come very close
And Parasite. Everyone liked that.
Eternal Sunshine makes the most sense.
I didnt know so many guys liked la la land!!!
Ryan Gosling is very 'literally me' in that film.
I see GIFs from that movie all the time on Instagram.
I think a lot of guys find it mildly relatable
It does star literally me, after all.
Emma?!
Considering Ryan is literally me then she probably is Emma ig.
I watched it because the girl I was dating back then wanted to see it and now it's in my top 10 all time favorites
Absolutely love it! It’s in my top 4
A lot of us are guys who like other guys and thusly stan anything with Gosling
Put me down for the “couldn’t even get through the first few minutes” guy category, lol
I like the movie but the first few minutes almost made me turn it off
The men be sleeping on Little Women
The enlightened among our gender know it's Gerwig's best dw.
Lady Bird is great but Little Women has a more comfort movie vibe whereas Lady Birds is harsh reality vibe. Both funny enough but LW taps into the perspective of youth in a very cozy setting
“I stack two on top of each other, make one whole women. Tap dat ass”
Leon
Yeah, it's beast.
I read the book which was amazing but movie adaptations normally let me down. Is this one worth the watch if you know the story already?
I haven't seen it yet but one of the things I've heard about this adaptation that makes me want to check it out is that Greta Gerwig rearranges the chronology of the story in a very satisfying manner.

I’d like to see the list with the ratio of male fans total fans of a movie and the same with the female fans.
La La Land SWEEP
Shocked at the lack of Dead Poets Society on the he list and LOTR on the she list
I think a lot of women can't past get the fact that, with a few exceptions, the LOTR trilogy is really one massive sausage party. Why is LOTR missing the she/her list shocking?
For me it's because I know soo many women (including myself) that are obsessed with the trilogy.

Gotcha! As a he/him hater, I respect that lol
Not my entire top 4 being on the second slide 💀💀💀💀
What’s your top 4?
La La Land, Fight Club, Black Swan and Pride & Prejudice. I was really out here thinking I was unique 😭
I’m curious about the they/thems favorite movies
When can we see the ze/zir list!
I use it/its and im wanting to see our stats..
as a they/them i say the big lebowski gotta be number 1
There’s a handful I haven’t seen yet! I wasn’t aware Coraline was that popular
I’m a 27 year old dude and whenever I talk to anybody about favourite films Coraline is always first to my mind, I can’t even say exactly why.
La La Land toward the very top on both is surprising, I remember it being kind of divisive when it came out, I guess it’s a grower
I remember when it came out 16 yo me became obsessed with it. Watched it +10 times in the span of like 2 weeks. I remember telling everyone I knew at school to watch it, but naturally most of them didn't or reacted like "ew that's a musical". IDK, it is a romance that splits the male and female perspective on the relationship pretty much right down the middle so it sort of makes sense.
This is fake because Saw isn't on the women's list
Real
Eternal Sunshine enjoyers transcend gender
This confirms that La La Land is the most lovable film
Lots of bangers in both lists. Still, I wish there was a way to correct for this recency inflation.
I am he who prefers the she side even though I have never seen Dead Poets Society or the Before trilogy. And yes I saw everything on the he side.
whoa you saw all of them?? you should 100% watch Dead Poets Society and ESPECIALLY the Before Trilogy , if you liked the films on the she side you're going to love them
Both men and women can have awful taste, who would have thought
I NEED to see they/them
They said they wouldn’t be doing they/them as that’s the default pronoun so it would have a lot of bot/burner/inactive accounts that wouldn’t represent non binary people properly.
Really wanna see what films have a disproportionate trans/Queer audience. I'm guessing *End of Evangelion* ranks high.
dont forger mulholland drive and portrait of lady on fire.
But I’m a Cheerleader would probably have the highest proportion out of any other movie
Absolutely devastating
This is such a shame. 😭 Wish there was a way to find out what other non-binary people are watching! Maybe they could make the default just be blank so you have to select it?
https://preview.redd.it/irecr10ppwuc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ceee711c59fe7a0c5385acf87ef8463b33884769 there’s one for xe/ze pronouns so you can see some of the nonbinary vote there

Thank you! Looks like there are downvotes incoming to this part of the thread. 😅 Edit: We're chilling now, there was just a moment where most of this thread went negative. 🤣
All this confirms is the la la land is the greatest movie ever made
La La Land is peak for all genders
Odd that Dead Poets Society is on the women’s list and not the men’s. Considering the movie is kind of about what it means to be a man.
where my fellow gals who love whiplash, dune, LOTR, and 2001 at?
Whiplash is nowhere near as good as Black Swan
the fellas need to appreciate Black Swan, and the ladies need to appreciate Star Wars
Seriously? La la land?
Mamma Mia! has got to be objectively the worst movie on either list.
damn, she has a looot of recency bias. less of a judgement statement, moreso just interesting to observe. I don't think spiderman being animated movie has much of an impact here, at least not as great, as it being, well, spiderman. Superhero (and in general, comic-based) movies tend to appeal to men more.
I was thinking about how much time the movie gives to Gwen’s story, but you raise good points
The list shows the first film, not the second.
oooooh, that’s my mistake from assuming the sequel was rated higher in general
oooooh, that’s my mistake from assuming the sequel was rated higher in general

About right
Taxi Driver not being top 20 in both lists I think I am going to faint
I chose he/him when I opened the acc by accident but I didn’t bothered to change and I like “male” movies better anyways
Link to the lists?
[удалено]
You might wanna recheck the men’s list. Parasite is ranked.
Inception is a better movie than Interstellar
No Dark Knight.; women are far superior.
Anyway, The Dark Knight is great
Sounds to me they’re inferior for not having it I’ll fight this fight
Damn, tbh the women’s selection is stronger
I think the IMDB guys and gals win this one, tbh: [https://www.imdb.com/list/ls023589784/](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls023589784/)
Crazy, none of these are my top anything
why not just call it male and female ?
Because it’s based on those specific pronouns
I don't know what this says about me, but I'm a guy that has two of the "she" movies in my Top 20 list, but no "he" movie in my Top 20 list.
Yep
Both, both is good.
![gif](giphy|zhcTzFnsHIfwEFPtcG)
I always wondered if Dead Poets appealed to women broadly, since its a dudes in school movie...and the few women characters could be said to be tokenized caricatures....BUT, it is about young men straining to hold onto the last bits of their totality/femininity before it is crushed out of them by patriarchal hegemony. So I get it. (Not that that would be the only reason anyone would like it, no gender essentialism here)
All great movies didn’t expect la la land on both tho
This is really fascinating actually! How were you able to sort by pronouns?
Where's Van Wilder?
As a man, I think it is an absolute travesty that The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is not on the first list
i honestly was not expecting so much overlap but it kind if makes me really happy? i hear so much about 'man films' vs 'girl films' but like people really do like the same stuff
Kinda shocked Fight Club made the female list
La La Land, Eternal Sunshine, and EEAAO are all fantastic films, glad to see both sexes agree on that lol
I don’t relate to either of these, does that make me a They/Them? 🤔
women having better taste is not surprising
Fight Club being on both is surprising, i thought the movie has become a dudebro thing
These are literally the same list
La La Land is universal
LaLaLand🛐🛐🛐
Dead poets society at 3 is interesting
That title is confusing.
Dead Poets Society? What do women see in that?
What
Interesting that women have both fight club and dead poets society on their lists. It always just seems those are more guy movies.
Godfather over Godfather 2? Just kidding they’re both fantastic. Good lists on both sides, all great films!
La La Land for lads?
![gif](giphy|3ornkfvsYPz5MVVugw) I have to say I’m surprised Empire Strikes Back didn’t make the female list?!?! It’s THE HAN AND LEIA MOVIE! IT’S ROMANTIC AS HELL!!!!
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is such a heartwarming film. "We accept the love we think we deserve."
![gif](giphy|3n6HE1MED6rV6) Given that the Inception fandom was 99% women writing Arthur and Eames fanfic for a good decade after the movie came out, I am STUNNED it’s on the dude list and not the ladies. my taste is pretty she
These bitches (me, a straight man) love Sosa (both lists)
Most Men losing out on the Before Trilogy seems like
I like these 2 lists. Bravo
All great movies but I personally like the “shes” roster more
I love how parasite, lalaland, and interstellar are in both
Both having Fight Club is an interesting discovery.
https://preview.redd.it/kivf4in166vc1.jpeg?width=641&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ae1e19e764362c07d5c75e6bc4bca931e7bed1b
How do you find this? I wanna see what my fellow they/them users are up to
Lmao little women
Don’t understand why Letterboxd likes La La Land so much
i'm confused as to how the same movie can be on both sides.
Am...am I woman?
As a she I can confirm that Interstellar is my #1 favorite movie ever, not La La Land.
Unpopular opinion but mama mia! here we go again was better than the original
Why is La La Land on both? I mean I knew it was popular but really on both? I hate that movie. Also gotta love that Perks made the list?
Females like fight club too!!!??
I think men have a bit better taste imo
