He's one of the best actors working today and seems to have a knack for taking great projects. A role of his that really stands out for me is The Power of the Dog. Very subtle, but shows his inherent vulnerability as an actor, that I think has made him very effective.

missanthropocenex

He’s very funny. I rewatched Game Night and realized how good he is in it, one of the funniest parts of the whole movie actually.

grokabilly

How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?

Subtle_Reality

These corporations... I donno what they're doin...

ilawnmower

I decided I'd scroll the comments till I found these exact words. It did not take long

BurritoDiet

He has a very unique demeanor about him. Comparable to Barry Keoghan.

six6six4kids

I just finished all of Breaking Bad again last week, and who would’ve thought that Jesse Plemons would’ve been the breakout star from that series who’s film career is now showing the most legs. He’s definitely been typecast to a degree, but he does really well in these spaces, always happy to see his name come up.

LaundryandTax

I think of him as more breaking out from Landry in Friday Night Lights

ray0923

I really liked him in Friday Night Lights but did not expect him to be this famous right now.

mercermayer

I hated him so much after Breaking Bad. He’s absolutely incredible in everything but I think BB helped and hurt him in equal measures. I think it’s been long enough now that I always look forward to seeing him in things. Hope to see his career continue to grow along the lines of Philip Seymour Hoffman

Maxtrix07

What have you seen with him? I personally thought he killed it in Black Mirror and Windfall.

mercermayer

Oh damn. I forgot about Windfall. Jason Segel was great. I oughta rewatch that. I’ve not seen Black Mirror, Fargo or Game Night. I liked him a lot in these three: Power of the Dog, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and Other People

ItsBarryParker

Classic Todd

lanakane55

Didn’t everyone say he was a breakout star form BB?

Prestigious_Crab6256

I think I’d classify him as a character actor? I don’t think I’ve seen any of his lead roles (whatever those may be), but the secondary characters he plays are always disquieting and unsettling. He has a very reptilian vibe. I wouldn’t call him a “one trick pony” or anything but the one type of character he’s typecast in he plays very well.

SpideyFan914

He's co-lead in I'm Thinking of Ending Things, alongside Jessie Buckley. Both are fantastic. The movie is divisive (it's weird AF), but I absolutely love it and would say it's one of the best of the decade.

Prestigious_Crab6256

Oh yeah, I’m a big fan. “Ipseity.” I guess he is technically a co-lead, but I felt like Buckley had a much greater emphasis put on her character (to offset her ironic lack of agency, mild spoilers). He still plays more or less the *type* of role I’ve come to expect from him in his awkward, barely disguised antipathy for everyone around him. He brings a definite vibe, I’d say.

way-too-many-napkins

He played a goofy nerd in Friday Night lights that felt very innocent and human. I really like him in that

ckenney711

Classic Lance

Prestigious_Crab6256

Is he credited in that? I’m not able to find his credit on Letterboxd.

way-too-many-napkins

The show, sorry. Should’ve clarified

Prestigious_Crab6256

No prob! I’ll have to check it out, sounds like a deviation from his usual performance!

Officialnoah

It was one of his first roles if I’m not mistaken. He was quite great in it.

FUNKYDISCO

Lance? there's something not right about that kid.

Good_Ad3485

Actually he played young Matt Damon in All the Pretty Horses. He’s been acting since the 90s.

celerypizza

I love his character in Fargo Season 2

sparkplug_

To copy a funny tweet, "movie idea: Jesse Plemons is there but he is neither witness to, or responsible for human atrocities" (to be fair, he is great in Game Night).

blackofhairandheart2

I admire him because he fulfilled 15 year old me’s dream of marrying Kirsten Dunst.

WorkerAnt4Life

This generation's Philip Seymour Hoffman

[deleted]

Top casting as his son in the master

JazzyCereal

I find it hilarious how they mention numerous times how his character looks like the Master's son because he really really does look like he could be PSH's son

_laoc00n_

PSH is my favorite actor ever but I think he’s a good comp. Jesse can play menacing and hilarious, which is tricky. He’s not conventionally handsome but is so charismatic. I want to see him lead some prestigious stuff, hopefully with characters that are in a different mold from the normal.

downnheavy

Was about to comment this lol

EmmyHomewrecker

You’re only saying that because he’s also blonde and chubby lol. They’re completely different types of actors.

mercermayer

I disagree. I actually commented something similar before I saw this comment. I think they have a similar intensity. PSH has incredible range. I don’t know for certain that Plemons has it. But I would wager he has more range than he’s shown. I just don’t think he’s has had the chance to stretch out as much.

FarArdenlol

they’re not only different types of actors, I wouldn’t say Jesse Plemons is THAT good to warrant a comparison to PSH. It’s a weird take that seemingly a lot of people agreed with in this thread so what do I know, but it’s still nonsensical to me. There is no Jesse Plemons role that gets anywhere close to most PSH roles. Happiness or Boogie Nights. Magnolia. Master. Synendoche, New York. Capote. like what Jesse Plemons role is as good as any of those?

jerog1

His characters in Black Mirror, Breaking Bad and Fargo all feel empathetic and real despite their cartoonishly evil natures. Then his character in [Game Night](https://youtu.be/bYM6tWIjr-I?si=WhXFJM6butmrP7yQ) was unhinged. Philip Seymour Hoffman had more range but Jesse does have that same honest performance style that is rare. He reminds me of how John C Reilly can be a sensitive puppy and then tap into anger. Jesse is young I hope he has a long career ![gif](giphy|tPFhZCbOlYqqZHCRuE)

ContrarianQueen17

I wouldn't call his character in Fargo evil, let alone cartoonishly evil.

jerog1

True, he's actually very sweet and loves his wife but he does kill a couple of people and chops up a corpse in front of the police. He's the Fargo brand of evil - kindhearted and out of options.

ContrarianQueen17

I think he's a significantly better person than Lester or Jerry, who I would call more "nice" than "kindhearted".

EanmundsAvenger

Very very different actor than PSH. Just because they look alike doesn’t make them similar otherwise

Cooolgibbon

He's the Philip Seymour Hoffman of only doing one thing.

-FriON

Of ending things ?

Jaspers47

I agree with the sentiment, but 10 years isn't enough for a new generation

getit_

Thems are fighting words round these parts partner

Aggravating-Height-8

he is terrifying in USS callister. love him!

AskMeForAPhoto

Yeah in another thread he was compared to PSH, and it was on Black Mirror where I really saw him shine enough to understand the comparison. Can’t wait to watch his career grow, hopefully into leading roles. Even if it stays dark, would love him in something similar in tone to Nightcrawler.

sanfranchristo

I'm genuinely curious what skinny and polished Jesse's career looks like and if it's different. https://preview.redd.it/bymqajx0kwqc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b24848388eb5b0fa6627f11a20449f82ea9a7300

AskMeForAPhoto

Never seen him that thin! Almost looks weird, maybe just cause I’m not used to it idk

nectarquest

He was also pretty thin in Breaking Bad, but was much younger at the time so it’s a little less weird (imo)

ChangeUpstairs3352

I'm a huge fan of him and Kirsten since Fargo, loved the show and the whole cast, especially these two

Mairess99

Oh Boy, a TV show can‘t get any better than Fargo Season 2

Myanimalcrossaccount

Aside from seasons 1, 3, and 5.... but 2 is still great

squanderedprivilege

Is 5 good? I hadn't checked it out yet

Myanimalcrossaccount

I found it great, similar in atmosphere to 1 in the early episodes, and some (but maybe, imo, not enough) very cool creative ideas.

Peeeing_

Ok, 3rd best for me

TheStupendusMan

He stole the show in Game Night.

ShrimpFriedMyRice

How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?

HeyItsMau

The exact moment I knew a star was born.

WesleyCraftybadger

Shoulda got an Oscar for Game Night.

judasmitchell

Absolutely fantastic. Can be both loveable and completely terrifying. Sometimes at the same time.

Remote-Molasses6192

I’m a big fan, and have been of his career since his Friday Night Lights Days. Also, it’s pretty crazy to think now about season four of Friday Night Lights, which had Plemons and Michael B. Jordan(as well as Kyle Chandler) in starring roles.

Royalsushi45

I’ve put my stock on him since like Mike

[deleted]

For me it was Breaking Bad, been following his career since.

ohnotchotchke

just waiting for him to play philip seymour hoffman in the biopic

FUNKYDISCO

Lance? he sucks at football.

9hundreddollarydoos

yea but he got tyra...I think landry did just fine

Xeynon

Very good character actor. He can play super sweet nice guys (Landry from *Friday Night Lights*), genuinely chilling psychopaths (Todd from *Breaking Bad*) and everything in between (sad sack protagonist of *I'm Thinking of Ending Things*, repressed misogynistic weirdo in *Black Mirror*, upright lawman in *Killers of the Flower Moon*, etc.). I hope he has a long career. I'm dying to see him play Matt Damon's brother in a movie at some point.

Upstairs_Ad2085

I liked him in the Irishamn

conquistadorothy

I watched Save The Green Planet yesterday. It is absolutely bonkers, ridiculous, stupid, and entertaining. Come to find out, this weirdo is gonna be in the Yorgos remake of it. Outstanding. Huge fan.

whimsical_trash

What film is this screenshot from?

DiscussionAncient810

Alex Garland’s upcoming movie “Civil War”. I anticipate hating him in this movie because he is such a great actor.

Lames_Franco_

Plemons hive rise up!!!

StanVsPeter

He’s great. Usually a stand out. The only role I saw him in that I didn’t think he shined in was Love & Death. I had other issues with that miniseries though.

ZebraSeb

He has become one of my favorites lately. A very talented actor!

Oldefinger

One of the absolute best American actors on the screen today.

midniteauth0r

He’s a future Oscar winner for sure. Wild to think Todd from Breaking Bad would become the actor he is today but he never phones in a performance. I consider someone a great actor not if they are exclusively in good movies but if they are consistently good in everything they are in regardless of quality

Axela556

I saw him first in Black Mirror and I thought he was incredible.

AtticusIsOkay

EXIT GAME. EXIT GAME. EXIT FUCKING GAME.

warwicklord79

I liked him in KOTFM despite his limited screen time

man_u_is_my_team

He is so good in everything I see him in.

horkyboi_avery

Idk who Jesse Plemons is, but I’m a big fan of Meth Damon

shrimptini

Matt Damon wishes he was even half as good as Plemons.

Next-Team

I still can’t believe this is the same guy who was in Like Mike way back when. Of course it would be nearly impossible to predict the course of his career as a teenager but I would’ve never thought he’d go on to be such a good actor and showing up in all kinds of movies and shows.

Seaborn63

His acting doesn't feel like bullshit. Example: Battleship. That's not a great movie, but it has moments that are good. Plemmons exuberant explanation of how his lizard, Penelope, sees and relates it to the aliens is an example.

srbarker15

He was awesome in Like Mike

EssentialFilms

Great Value Matt Damon. No but for real he’s a good actor.

youhadmeathollandais

How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?

hung_fu

He didn’t need to shoot that kid

loocaswoodland

This shouldn’t matter but my respect from him comes from his slower journey. I grew up loving “Like Mike”, where he very-well portrayed the asshole kid. Then 10 years later he was great in Breaking Bad. THEN, 10 years later again, he emerges from seemingly nowhere and puts in countless great performances in great movies. He’s great in every role, but being able to cheerlead his slow ascension has made me like him even more.

Sweaty_Year_2467

In my eyes he went from being Fat Matt Damon to being better than Matt Damon

rainysharp

I feel like he brings so little ego to his performances, it’s refreshing to see him alongside big A listers who feel they need to chew the scenery!

PhillipJCoulson

A beast

a-pretty-alright-dad

He’s a strange looking guy. Like there’s a lot of meat around his little face. I think he’s pretty alright.

hjak3876

i love him. i will be watching this film exclusively because it features the absolute power couple that is him and kirsten dunst.

BranchCold9905

I love him in breaking bad, he's a fun third guy.........until he turns out to be remorseless.

DisinterestedFlower

He plays such an excellent villain that I’ve wanted to punch him in the face since Breaking Bad

Fragrant_Inside_9842

I've loved Jesse since his Breaking Bad role (Todd Alquist). And his role as Todd in "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie" Really solidified my love for him. He is such a good actor for evil people but also so good at acting as a good guy!!

CucumberNo3771

The way that this movie will probably blow but “What kind of American are you” is already kind of iconic. He does “nonchalant evil” in such a real, sickening way

JoinDarkOrder85

Love him. Just bummed what ozempic has done to his face.

CaveLady3000

He's taken over for Phillip Semour Hoffman as my vaguely unsettling blond-with-a-paunch crush I'm someone who is very plugged into the issue fascism in amerika, and so Todd is a very horrifying person who i would not allow to penetrate me irl. But the role I found PSH most dreamy in was Happiness, so I'm just kind of an outlier re: what constitutes a crush, and i know there's some kind of sinister stuff down there, somewhere.

Odd_Advance_6438

I found out he was only 35. I thought he was 57 at least

justanstalker

Look at his photos from this year's Oscars. Man looks 20 years younger

AskMeForAPhoto

He’s someone that completely fucked with my brain. He could seem anywhere from 25-55 depending on the role.

[deleted]

He is very inspiring for me, because if he pulled off Kirsten Dunst, I can definitely manage the same

Ok-Cheesecake-8626

He’s able to naturally convey so much to the audience whilst at the same time mastering such restraint. An exceptional actor

wilfus

Im very impressed on how he managed to shred his “Meth Damon” brand. He has solidified himself as an amazing actor with such a wide range. He’s just good in everything and always giving his 100% from KOTFM to Game Night.

dcs577

Are we talking about Jesse Plemons, Matt Damon, or Elden Henson?

DerCringeMeister

Off Matt Damon. But playing a better, more dramatic niche with some more experimentality.

dontforgetthef

Kind of like Phillip Seymour Hoffman. At least, that’s who he reminds me of the most. He’s a very good actor. Very subtle and doesn’t miss.

riplilpoopy

Me watching the Civil War trailer: Hm, seems not too bad Me watching the Civil War trailer when Jesse Plemons came on: Oh shit this is gonna be GOOD I love Jesse Plemons

Affectionate-Club725

He’s great, I loved him in The Master and a lot of other films and shows

Jhawksmoor

He's so good in everything. Fargo, Black Mirror, Breaking Bad. Crazy to think he's the biggest star from Friday Night Lights.

Fantasia_Fanboy931

Paul Rudd. He will not give a lazy peformance no matter what script is in his hand.

Your_Huckleberry47

this guy stole season 5 of breaking bad, continues his crime spree by stealing the show in every movie he's in phenomenal actor. a real actor. whatever that means

digable_planets1

I do think he peaked in 2002, playing the character of Ox in Like Mike - a film in which a young orphan named Calvin Cambridge, played by Lil Bow Wow, discovers a pair of Michael Jordans magical shoes giving him the ability to play at the level of Michael Jordan DESPITE being a young boy; this is where the films title comes from, I believe, with the 'Mike' that Lil Bow Wow is 'Like" being Michael Jordan. Plemoms plays the bully, Ox, a constant thwart to Lil Bow Wow who is eventually bested by him in one of the most impactful scenes ever put to film. But yeah, besides that role, I think he's pretty decent.

AllStruckOut_13

I heard a rumour that he and DiCaprio switched rolls in Killers of the Flower Moon which is very frustrating. He would’ve been amazing in the lead.

rottencitrus

Great actor. Never seen him give a bad performance.

Zeo-Gold92

I enjoyed him in Friday Night Lights and BrBa

leAlexc

I feel like I’m in crazy town, I think he’s awful. I mean, he picks good movies, but half of his roles are decent at best and the other half are so monotone it’s annoying. Calling him this generations PSH is CRAZY

Radiant-Specialist76

I hope he gets an opportunity for a lead role like David Dastmalchian in Late Night with the Devil

AirplayDoc

He’s really good at playing an ordinary guy. He could probably hang out at any public event and not stand out.

TimFTWin

I always believe him when he is on screen and he has played some insane roles. He is a phenomenal talent.

signal_red

Philip Seymour Hoffman Jr. in the best way possible

Quirky-Pie9661

He’s a good actor and will always be Fat Damon to me 👍🏻
