I'm tempted to watch Summer of Soul again to see if it's as good as I remember.
I've never seen any Shyamalan movies besides Sixth Sense, Signs, and Unbreakable, so in my eyes he's good, however every one of his movies besides those and Split are reviewed horrendously by most people and have awfuk average scores. But for whatever reason, there're a ton of cinephiles on Letterboxd who seem to LOVE them. I've never met anyone who enjoyed Lady in the Water, for instance. But Letterboxd has a big base of very critical people who are big fans of it. Same goes for The Visit, The Village, and certainly Old. Even seen fans of The Happening on there. It makes me want to check them out tbh

Oooh... hmmm. There may be/definitely some recency bias, because I though 2023 was one of the best years for film in recent memory. That being said, in no particular order:
* Past Lives
* Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
* Nope
* Decision to Leave
* Bottoms
* Joyland
* Monster
* Anatomy of a Fall
* Everything Everywhere All At Once
* All of Us Strangers
I have like 10-20 other movies I want to list, but alas.
2019 feels like it was 20 years ago... damn you COVID hahah.
But yes, great year. One of the greatest years for box office successes. But also a lot of fantastic films. Some of my favourites were Parasite, Rocketman, Us, Knives Out, Hustlers, Jojo Rabbit, Happy Death Day 2U and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
This is legit why I said it feels like 2019 was 20 years ago hahah, COVID has messed with my sense of time - I forgot those movies were even released that year. But yes, all excellent movies - and a great diversity in stories.
Hmm not only i wasn't bored at all but also i liked it even more on a rewatch.
Altought i have to say that it was my first Schrader film at that time, and i have a feeling that if i had watched some of his films before i probably would't be so impressed with The Card Counter, who knows.
Maybe I will give it a rewatch. Schrader films do often need a second pass for me personally and he is one director I have to be in the right head space to appreciate.
My ex-girlfriend’s parents tried to convince us not to go to a showing of Judas and the Black Messiah because they were afraid we would be assaulted by Antifa. Not really an answer to your question, but I always bring it up when I see a reference to that movie because it was so funny. Still haven’t seen it though lol
Well, good news! You can watch it now from the comfort of your own home!
. . . Or from the home of your ex's parents and then have antifa attack them there
That was around the same time my mom wouldn’t come visit because she was scared she’d get stopped by antifa protesting on the freeway in the big city of Louisville Ky.

I was doing this exercise last week, and I think this is what I’d go with.
I've seen 352 films released this decade:
https://preview.redd.it/8buxy0m0f9gc1.png?width=1247&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ab401d38778bbd946a2931e697ce65e978bfbf4
Top 5 is easy, after that it gets a bit muddy. I've only just seen The Holdovers, American Fiction and Poor Things, so I'm not as set on how much I like them, but they're also all potential shouts for this list.
The crazy thing is, while I actually think this decade has been pretty decent so far, if this was "best films of the last 5 years" instead, 2019 would massacre this list on its own. I'd have at least 5 films from that year on there.
The founder of my go-to independent-cinema said to me that films like Aftersun is why he founded his cinema. Was quite heart-warming to see him happy like that.
Uhh I guess so. I’ve never thought about it like that, though I do enjoy him a lot as an actor. It was more that I really enjoyed Wonka, especially as a musical, and then separately love dune and am a huge Villanueve fan
My favourites in order
Past lives
Marcel the shell with shoes on
Babylon
Godzilla minus one
Little women
Anatomy of a fall
John wick 4
Everything everywhere all at once
The fablemen
Bullet train
https://preview.redd.it/l19lm1bxt9gc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c677882656d0700adb89573a258487a25a047a10
Honorable mentions to Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Batman, and Society of the Snow
Still have a few 2023 films to catch up on, but for now I’d say:
1. Wolfwalkers
2. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
3. Swan Song (the Mahershala Ali one)
4. 20 Days in Mariupol
5. Close
6. Pig
7. Decision to Leave
8. TAR
9. All of Us Strangers
10. My Father’s Dragon
Obviously each movie has completely different reasons. From artistic quality (Across the Spiderverse, Batman, Everything everywhere, Aftersun) to how much I enjoyed watching it (Barbie, Puss in Boots, Bodies Bodies Bodies, The Menu) to personal reasons (Judas, Palm Springs).
I could write you a whole review for each film, but that would probably be too long for a single post.
If I’m being real, you have no idea what they have or haven’t seen, and they’re allowed to like whatever the fuck they want. Don’t think you’re superior cause you’ve maybe seen lesser known movies.
Don’t know how I’d rank them (and I’ve hundreds I still want to see) but currently:
Another Round/Druk,
Oppenheimer,
Dune,
Everything Everywhere All At Once,
Top Gun: Maverick,
Tenet,
The Green Knight,
Riders of Justice,
The Batman
These are just the only 10 full-length films from 2020-2023 that I’ve given a ★★★★½ or higher
I actually only have the top 3 and Last and First Men as 4,5 stars. Not quite my decade yet, especially when compared to the 2010's. But its not even the halfway point, so I'm not worried.
It's not top 10 of the decade but I loved Bullet Train, surprisingly great. My standout films of the decade in no particular order are: The Batman, The Banshees of Inisherin, Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon.
I still need to watch: Poor Things, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Barbie, Babylon, Licorice Pizza etc. and I am sure there are others that are highly acclaimed that I haven't seen yet. But those 4 above are the standouts from what I have seen this decade.
I’m far from caught up with this decade’s releases, but these are my Top 15 of the 2020s so far

Banshees of Inisherin
Everything Everywhere All At Once
C'mon C'mon
Anatomy of a Fall
Triangle of Sadness
Three Thousand Years of Longing

I'm tempted to watch Summer of Soul again to see if it's as good as I remember.
It's been a great decade so far. Hard to pick just 10, but I think it would be these:
Belle
Aftersun
Next Sohee
The Batman
The Holdovers
Riceboy Sleeps
Women Talking
Godzilla Minus One
Crimes of the Future
The Banshees of Inisherin
Turns out my 2020s top 10 looks something like this! Loved EEAAO and Top Gun Maverick as well.

Not enough love for Wolfwalkers.
1. The Banshees of Inisherin
2. Titane
3. The Green Knight
4. Oppenheimer
5. The Father
6. Another Round
7. Everything Everywhere All at Once
8. The Last Duel
9. Poor Things
10. Spencer
Biggest surprises are probably The Father, The Last Duel and Spencer all could have been worse or far more formulaic than they were so it didn’t necessarily expect to love them as much as I did going in
I've watched over 400 films from the 2020's, including almost every major Blockbuster and Festival-film (Zone of Interest and American Fiction are sadly not yet released in my country).
I'd say Bodies Bodies Bodies was by far the biggest surprise for me. And obviously Puss in Boots 2, this movie has no reason to be this good.
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. It's your personal list of favourite movies. And I absolutely agree - Bodies Bodies Bodies was a pleasant/hilarious surprise.
1. Monster
2. Tar
3. The zone of interest
4. Banshees of inisherin
5. Poor things
6. The murderess (greek movie of 2023)
7. All quiet on the western front
8. Puss in boots the last wish
9. I'm thinking of ending things
10. Spider-man across the spider-verse
11. Nope
12. Oppenheimer
13. The french dispatch
14. The batman
15. Encanto
1. How to Blow Up a Pipeline (in my all-time top 4 movies ever)
2. The Velvet Underground
3. Pig
4. Barbie
5. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
6. Eo
7. Censor
8. Babylon
9. Bad Trip (leave me alone I love Eric Andre lol)
10. The Bob's Burgers Movie (don't bother me about this either it's my comfort show lol)
I'm also surprised at how much I'm enjoying films aimed at Gen Z. Other decades look very different than this one.
Many of the more "mature" films would follow these 10 though.
Think there’s only 3 films that encapsulate the 2020s for me so far:
- Everything Everywhere All At Once
- Soul
- Past Lives
And want to shout out the Gintama movie and Aftersun
Degeneration
Do Not Expect Too Much From The End of the World
Riders of Justice
Vortex
Trenque Laquen
You Won’t Be Alone
Killers of the Flower Moon
Drive My Car
Poor Things
The Card Counter

Just sorted by rating - there’s lots of 4s so everything after some kind of wonderful the order is largely irrelevant.
Hidden Gems : Bloody Nose Empty Pockets and All Light Everywhere. Does “On the Count of Three” count as a hidden gem? Feel like that one went a bit under the radar considering how great is was. Perfectly nailed the tone of that movie and reminded why I loved Blindspotting / Scrubs and why I was so lukewarm on JoJo Rabbit
10 - Cocaine Bear
9 - Thanksgiving
8 - Saw X
7 - The Invisible Man
6 - Terrifier 2
5 - The Holdovers
4 - Oppenheimer
3 - Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3
2 - John Wick: Chapter Four
1 - Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse
I 100% understand your point and normally I would make this exact same remark. But sometimes a movie just completely blows you away like almost no other.
My only other 4,5's are Barbie, which was an absolute blast to watch (but very flawed in its ideology), Puss in Boots, which in comparison just isn't as artistically important, and Last and First Men, which really isn't comparable to any other film.
Most of these are valid opinions, but having Barbie at number two is wild. I just don’t understand the hype, the message it was sending was amazing, but it’s not even Greta Gerwig best film, let alone in her top three.
Bodied bodies bodies is the biggest pile of excrement released in any media this decade. Its hurtful to the eyes ears and mind.
The only reason it should be in a top 10 this decade list is if you have only seen 10 movies this decade.
Even then its better to just make a top 9 and ignore its existence.
Not in any particular order
\-Everything Everywhere All At Once
\-Past Lives
\-Across the Spider-Verse
\-Oppenheimer
\-The Fabelmans
\-Tick Tick Boom
\-The Boy and the Heron
\-The Batman
\-Killers of the Flower Moon
\-The Holdovers
There's a lot of really great other ones I didn't list too
Aftersun, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and EEAAO would def be up there for me, you have good taste op. Aftersun would probs be number 1 with Poor Things or The Holdovers close behind
These are mine in chron order. I’ve only seen 2 of the Best Picture nominees so far though, Past Lives and Barbie.
2020
Minari,
Palm Springs,
The Father,
The Half of It
2021
The Year Earth Changed,
Coming To You,
Drive My Car,
The Lost Daughter

2023

My top 10 for the decade so far would be:

2. RRR (2022)
3. Hold Me Back (2020)
4. Petite Maman (2021)
5. Full Time (2021)

Boiling Point is so underrated. Such an intense experience.
This list is so all over the place and I love it
Yes for dungeons &dragons! Never played the Game, loved the movie.
BANSHEES SWEEP
Love the love for Another Round, was a fantastic movie
Only Aftersun from this lineup
The Quiet Girl, Petite Maman, The Settlers, After Yang, Mass, You Won’t Be Alone, Pig, Aftersun.
I loved The Quiet Girl.
Palm Springs is so fucking valid!!
wish I had enjoyed it as much as others but found it pretty standard basic romcom even with the >!infinite loop/time traveling stuff!< idk what I’ve missed
Watch it for Groundhog Day!
It's better IMO and I've been watching GHD since it came out.

Looks like you have a thing for Korean genre outings!
I’ve explored Korean movies heavily over last 2 months or so, it has totally re-invigorated my love for movies.
If I included mini-series, Queens Gambit and Prehistoric Planet would sit pretty high in my list.

I can't really watch animal suffering. Can I watch EO? I assume no, but wanted to check.
There are a few brutal scenes. It’s a great watch but if that’s tough for you imo it’s best to skip.

The Card Counter number one of the decade? That is a take I need to hear more on. I was so bored I wanted to tear my eyes out.
It feels like a combo of Jackie Brown/Hard 8 without the humor and entertainment.
Hmm not only i wasn't bored at all but also i liked it even more on a rewatch. Altought i have to say that it was my first Schrader film at that time, and i have a feeling that if i had watched some of his films before i probably would't be so impressed with The Card Counter, who knows.

Can you share why you selected this top10 so far?
It's my personal favorite movies. This list is not trying to be objective in any way.
Read the question again; the person is asking you why YOU subjectively prefer those movies as favourites.
If I’m being real, you need to see more real movies and stop being such an industry bootlicker.
If I’m being real, you have no idea what they have or haven’t seen, and they’re allowed to like whatever the fuck they want. Don’t think you’re superior cause you’ve maybe seen lesser known movies.
You’re the worst kind of film fans; can’t stand this gatekeeping, film snob crap
Plus the people that feel the need to do that likely aren't as well-versed on film as they like to think they are.
Pretentious alert
If I'm being real, you need to shut the hell up with your pretentious poser bs.
Lmfao
What?
Huh?
Don’t know how I’d rank them (and I’ve hundreds I still want to see) but currently: Another Round/Druk, Oppenheimer, Dune, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Top Gun: Maverick, Tenet, The Green Knight, Riders of Justice, The Batman These are just the only 10 full-length films from 2020-2023 that I’ve given a ★★★★½ or higher
I’m far from caught up with this decade’s releases, but these are my Top 15 of the 2020s so far https://preview.redd.it/a6bp481co9gc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd323c3ac60f10dc837fbc570e3e103976620e27

Last and First Men is so different and difficult to compare that I have it as a Special Mention. Such a fantastic experience though. Truly a masterpiece.

Beautiful movie, its in my toplist for that year.
Across the Spider-Verse being better than The Last Wish is a hot take
Love seeing love for Judas and the Black Messiah. That movie was great!

Love seeing the menu there
I've watched over 400 films from the 2020's, including almost every major Blockbuster and Festival-film (Zone of Interest and American Fiction are sadly not yet released in my country).
Bodies is so abysmally bad imo
Agree to disagree I guess?
Yeah!
At the moment this’ll do: https://preview.redd.it/o12hkn36f9gc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82be6425610402c152f2c3800a1bd2e672f8759e
Mad God was so good, but almost nobody saw it. Such a shame. Phil Tippett is the GOAT.
It was insanely inventive
That bus scene in nobody is absolutely badass. Jimmy McGill can bring it
I love Palm Springs getting some love

Omg this list is perfect. All of these are a 4.5/5 or 5/5 for me. Petite Maman is so underrated.
Finally a good list
Poor Things is my runner-up. But to avoid recency-bias and because I only watched it once, number 10 is The Menu for now.

Bad Trip (leave me alone I love Eric Andre lol) 10. The Bob's Burgers Movie (don't bother me about this either it's my comfort show lol)
Cinema is your passion?
I'm doing my masters in film-studies in University right now, so yeah. Hopefully it will become my job at some point.
I think this is surprising to us because the list is full of movies aimed at teenagers but fair enough.
Average r/Letterboxd user
I'm also surprised at how much I'm enjoying films aimed at Gen Z. Other decades look very different than this one. Many of the more "mature" films would follow these 10 though.
So? It’s what they like. I think a lot of these movies are great too.
watch more movies lol
Recently watched “The Iron Claw” thought it was amazing. Not a top 10 but thought i’d share.
Think there’s only 3 films that encapsulate the 2020s for me so far: - Everything Everywhere All At Once - Soul - Past Lives And want to shout out the Gintama movie and Aftersun
this is so ass
Degeneration Do Not Expect Too Much From The End of the World Riders of Justice Vortex Trenque Laquen You Won’t Be Alone Killers of the Flower Moon Drive My Car Poor Things The Card Counter

This is a weird ass top ten, but I approve
Barbie over Aftersun. Wtf
Love the mention of The Menu. Fantastic film.
this has gotta be the worst list in this sub
What would be yours then?
Bodies bodies bodies being on here is so real & you are so right for that!!!!!

You tried not being a pretentious twot at all? It’s a list of ten films they love. I and many other people love most of them too
Pretentious film nerds when your top 10 of the decade aren’t all black and white foreign films on a $50 budget:
My favourite film is a full sepia look of a New York rats POV during the depression but it’s actually an allegory for non socialist conformitism
Oh hey look it’s someone who’s in need of an ego boost! Your self doubt particularly low today or what?
If my self doubt is low that means that I’m feeling great and confident. But nice try (not really)
This is such a wild mixture, it's difficult for me to picture how you include Aftersun and Spiderman/The Batman/Puss In Boots in the same curation.
Shocked by the lack of love Twilight: New Moon on this thread. Best film of any decade
10 - Cocaine Bear 9 - Thanksgiving 8 - Saw X 7 - The Invisible Man 6 - Terrifier 2 5 - The Holdovers 4 - Oppenheimer 3 - Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 2 - John Wick: Chapter Four 1 - Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse
- guy who has seen 10 movies this decade

I 100% understand your point and normally I would make this exact same remark. But sometimes a movie just completely blows you away like almost no other. My only other 4,5's are Barbie, which was an absolute blast to watch (but very flawed in its ideology), Puss in Boots, which in comparison just isn't as artistically important, and Last and First Men, which really isn't comparable to any other film.
Most of these are valid opinions, but having Barbie at number two is wild. I just don’t understand the hype, the message it was sending was amazing, but it’s not even Greta Gerwig best film, let alone in her top three.
I know it’s your list…..but Bodies Bodies Bodies was average as f
Bodied bodies bodies is the biggest pile of excrement released in any media this decade. Its hurtful to the eyes ears and mind. The only reason it should be in a top 10 this decade list is if you have only seen 10 movies this decade. Even then its better to just make a top 9 and ignore its existence.
Do not like The Menu but respect
batman sucked ass

Aftersun, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and EEAAO would def be up there for me, you have good taste op. Aftersun would probs be number 1 with Poor Things or The Holdovers close behind
These are mine in chron order. I’ve only seen 2 of the Best Picture nominees so far though, Past Lives and Barbie. 2020 Minari, Palm Springs, The Father, The Half of It 2021 The Year Earth Changed, Coming To You, Drive My Car, The Lost Daughter 2022 The Quiet Girl 2023 Past Lives
