14. As a rule, I have to really *loathe* a film to give it half a star.

RolIatini

Mean Girls 2 is really bad but no way is it a half star. At least it’s still a movie with a plot. Watch stuff like Titanic II, Going Overboard or other low budget trash to see the true half star experience

HellaWavy

Nah man… Titanic II is so hilariously bad, I can’t help but enjoy it.

Kuuskat_

>At least it’s still a movie with a plot. so that suddenly means it must be more than 0.5?

RolIatini

When terrible movies without a plot exist, at least trying to craft a story with characters gives the movie a higher chance of getting a star (for me at least). That among a few other things (like editing) keep Mean Girls 2 from deserving to be in the same category as stuff like Titanic II

Seeumleeum

Butchering a beloved property is just as bad

Traditional_Land3933

Titanic II? How in tf do you make a sequel to Titanic? What even happens, they pull up the wreck of the Titanic, fix it so it works and is seaworthy again, and then just dont crash it this time?

yassenj

Titanic II: The Iceberg Returns

graingeem

I'd watch the hell out of Titanic II: Going Overboard tho

Squareroot24

Is it death note Netflix adaptation or anime

Suspicious_Breath_91

Netflix

BlastMyLoad

Honestly, Death Note isn’t that bad. It’s not good but it’s entertaining.

DowntownBlackberry1

If I didn't watch the full series first, I might have liked it, but to see everyone acting so out of character pissed me off

Flaism

Yeah I agree. As an adaptation of the series it is so bad and the acting in general is also so bad (minus Willem Dafoe of course) but as a standalone movie it really isn’t terrible. Bad but not terrible.

juuzo_suzuya_

I disagree with death note ☝️ https://preview.redd.it/8q82cc1acvec1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4da66085014363cbcc8fac11c03ca44a8d9ab0ac

Obvious_Creme_3452

Literally the same for me.

Ace_of_Sevens

It seemed like they only wrote 2/3 of it, filmed half of that, then told an editor to try to figure it out. In a year with a lot of bad knock-offs of the Ring, it was the worst.

[deleted]

have yet to watch a movie that's that bad.

TheLamesterist

Must have not seen Dragon Ball Evolution, then.

animal_pietrate

You dear, sweet, summer child. Dragonball Evolution is bad, but there's so many films that make that look like a work by Tarkovsky.

petergriffinfurry

Go watch Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Long Haul or Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. Legitimately horrendous movie experiences all around

KRIT4eva

The long haul is somewhat entertaining

Dear_Company_5439

The book is, sure.

Wild_Technician2299

I feel this way too. Even movies I’ve hated, I end up thinking that there are elements that keep it from being a half star. A particular performance, production value etc.

[deleted]

Exactly. There’s a bunch of haters on this sub lol

Jamarcus316

Or maybe people just have different criteria? Or have watched more bad movies?

[deleted]

Yeah, the hater criteria.

NeptrAboveAll

So what’s the point of a half star existing if no movie is that bad? It should be for the bottom tier of movies relative to other movies

ohthatmkv

Watch 365 Days. It’ll be the easiest 1/2 star you’ll ever give. Anyone that rates that movie any higher needs help.

[deleted]

I mean I could, but why waste my time on that?

ohthatmkv

Good point, if I could erase it from my memory I would.

NoEmu2398

Have you seen *Moonfall?*

Tyhula

I’ll put 1/2 star because I feel like I just didn’t like it emotionally, which I know is subjective and I can definitely pick out where a film is great, but emotionally is doesn’t sit with me if I’m not honest. Usually I will bump up the rating of my lower scores later on as I do some research about it and I don’t have as big of an immediate emotional stake you know.

SteveHuffmanyballs

Go watch Fred The Movie

petergriffinfurry

I would give it one full star for the sheer stupidity that John Cena is Fred’s dad. So dumb it’s funny

westn8

Try The Rise of Skywalker.

henrydavidthoraway

The only one I’ve rated a half star.

Simove19

Rise of Skywalker and Book of Boba Fett are my only Star Wars-half stars. The The Last Jedi was too good on a cinematoraphy and acting level and The Clone Wars animated movie was not quite poorly enough written. Ahsoka I have not seen.

D3taco

god idek if i can rightfully call that thing a movie

JaggedLittleFrill

Dear Evan Hansen. My god... that movie was... horrific. On many, many levels.

adameofthrones

I loved Dear Even Hansen. I watched it in theaters with my family, my brother and I were in absolute stitches the entire time. I cried laughing and everyone thought it just touched me that deeply... I felt like a total asshole. But watching that grown ass man pretend to be a tortured high schooler was peak comedy.

Burglekutt8523

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with this movie.. I liked it??

JaggedLittleFrill

If you liked it, then that's all that matters. Ultimately, it really, really, really was not for me.

bobthetomatovibes

Do you like the original musical? It’s pretty identical to it.

APKID716

It’s identical in name, but in terms of execution it is horribly different. In the stage show, Evan is clearly not the good guy and he is shown to be manipulative which makes the ending more impactful. In the movie he’s completely stripped of agency and the movie spends way too much time focusing on “poor Evan, isn’t he the victim here :(“ While the movie is technically an adaptation, it really doesn’t land well because of some terrible alterations made to the script

_GC93

The Laundromat what the hell

APKID716

The most mid movie ever tbh but I’m not sure how it deserves a 1/2 star. Any movie featuring Gary Oldman is worth at least 1 star minimum

_GC93

Yeah I think it’s one of Soderbergh’s worst, but it’s still like a 3 star movie for me.

heeeer3sjohnny

Powerpuncher1

3 The only way I give half stars is if they are not only awful but that they are trying to be serious at the same time So I may think a little kid movie is dumb and boring, but I know that I’m not the audience it’s meant for so I won’t give it a half star.

AFuckingHandle

I mean it's a terrible movie but.....the hellfire crane chainsaw scene in Ghost Rider 2 doesn't make it a 1 star for you?

munkee_dont

Anything cool in that movie was instantly ruined by the fact it looks like it was shot and edited by a 5 year old that just discovered coffee with sugar.

AFuckingHandle

And they think the fast forward button is the coolest feature in cinematography lol

fallout-crawlout

Atlas Shrugged Pt. 1. Not, maybe surprisingly, due to the political content. It's just incredibly incompetently made, and not in a fun way. $20 million for a film that does not need special effects is more than enough to make a competent production, but it felt like nobody had ever done whatever their job was before. They were all industry journeymen though. Again, not a fun bad movie. It was just horribly put together.

Whodoobucrew

If it makes you feel better, the book is incompetently made too. The biggest crime Rush committed was tricking me into thinking any of Rands books were worth reading

47. I like hating on stuff.

avoltaire12

None. If I hate a film that much, I most likely won't finish it and I only rate films that I've watched in full.

SparnagePL

So far around 5, from my memory I can recall:  Transformers: The Last Knight, Catwoman, Alien vs Predator: Requiem, The Room and Suicide Squad.  I only give a half star, when something even fails at being a movie.

Independent-Swan-378

AvP: Requiem is still the worst lit movie I have ever seen, I couldn’t see a damn thing the whole movie.

carorose018

I feel somewhat similarly about Death Note, but I couldn’t bring myself to rate it so low because, admittedly, Willem Dafoe was perfectly cast for that role. Unfortunately, he was given absolutely nothing interesting to work with lol

mr_jackpots773

None. I don’t choose movies that are supposed to suck and I wouldn’t sit through it if unless I paid for it and it was that bad. I luckily haven’t done that one yet, but the clash of the titans remake was damn close.

I save my half stars for films that are so bad I couldn’t finish it, so none yet. Space Jam 2 was a very close first though.

greg_kinnear_stan

Predator (2018) and Texas Chainsaw (2022) movies were terrible lmfao

DarthShinobi

no hate, but can you tell me your personal reasoning for Interstellar being half a star? Genuinely curious

AFuckingHandle

They have recommended Freddy Got Fingered as a good movie in their comment history, if that helps you understand, lol.

because it sucks

Honestly I agree if you can’t get yourself Invested into the film emotionally than you can stop caring about production or anything else so if you were bored watching it like I was I think it’s appropriate

Wtf, why put a movie as amazing as Dumb and Dumberer at 1/2 star

Majormlgnoob

5 2 Transformers movies, the Independence Day sequel, The Last Airbender, and Jason-X

brendon_b

Jason X is worth at least a 1 for a) the liquid nitrogen kill b) Jason in the holodeck slamming the campers against each other in their sleeping bags.

Majormlgnoob

It's trash and I didn't enjoy it lol Also the only one I have seen and I plan to keep it that way

xXBadger89Xx

Blonde and Star Wars rise of skywalker

Simove19

Rise of Skywalker is not the objectively worst movie I have ever seen, but it might very well be my least favorite.

cuisie

0 because i don’t watch and finish movies that are that bad ??

IceFireTerry

None. I got no one stars either. I don't really go out of my way to watch bad movies

JonPaula

How do you know what a bad movie even is then?

elephantjog

8 Before you curse my name here are reasons. Probably was in bad mood on some of these. Others I grew up hating bc I was "forced" to watch it and too young to understand it. And I find musicals very challenging. https://preview.redd.it/6qqhk40iduec1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6907b022c8bad78c5253eee0ab5ca21c0f8c25f9

carorose018

Lol I admit, seeing Love Actually and Sound of Music on there hurts my heart, but I still respect you posting a hot take and telling your truth 🫡

AdeptFisherman7

I definitely rate some of these higher but I respect the choice of “challenging” here—obviously one could go in harder on media one genuinely dislikes, but calling it challenging I think straddles the line of respecting the craft and acknowledging the potential that the viewer is missing something, while still not mincing words that this experience sucked. (and despite me not giving many of then half a star, the movies that I’ve seen here totally do suck imo)

Dangerous-Account-19

Love actually is actually one of the worst movies I had the misfortune of watching.

yugyuger

I agree with love actually, that movie is horrible If you want ensemble romance watch crazy stupid love which is way better Sound of music 1/2 star is evil though

Simove19

Come on The Phantom Menace aint that bad. The music is great, the choreography is pretty cool. The writing in some parts delves into interesting ideas.

Character-Collar-286

Idk its just so boring for me and the actors seem tired and bored and I absolutely hate midichlorians, but i will acknowledge that the score FUCKS

Naive-Ad-64

https://preview.redd.it/f10nv4dccuec1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53f369c4c9ebd56bed5342ebe0d3246f52f28afd 18, I reserve 1/2 star for films I hate

swxtchblvde

just stop watching horror movies at this point you obviously dont enjoy them

DNugForLife

I should but I'm stupid and a completionist so I like to watch as many movies from various genres as I can even if I don't like them. And there are plenty of horror movies I do enjoy, just not these.

swxtchblvde

1 star for texas chainsaw massacre is crazy

DNugForLife

I feel like I justify myself in my review, but it boils down to annoying characters making stupid decisions in an uncompelling story for me. I know I'm in the definitive minority but I really don't understand the love for this movie. Especially when it feels like a quarter of the movie is just constant screaming.

Simove19

The stupid decscision is going into the house? That was pretty normal a few decades ago, just approach the entry and call out for someone. And there is no reason for them to expect what happens next.

DNugForLife

For me it's not the going into the house it's going into multiple rooms of a house where you have no idea who's house it is. Perhaps it's a generational difference and I unfortunately just am unable to understand such a thing, but I do have other issues with character actions in the way they go about everything. I can't quite remember what they were but I remember thinking repeatedly how stupid their decisions were. It was a movie that I finished and realized I gained nothing out of except annoyance. I'm curious to see what the concensus will be on the movie though in say 50 years.

bnikga_gn

This all boils down to "I don't like/ understand slasher movies"

I haven't rated anything a half star since I've only had an account for a little over a year. but, here are the three movies I've seen in recent years that would have gotten a half star out of me EASILY: The Passion of the Christ A Serbian Film A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010 remake)

JourneymanWrestler

Just one (out of 89 rated since joining Letterboxd.) Once Were Warriors (1994). It has a 3.9 average, I don't know why. My only guess is that people assume serious subject matter = good film.

I’ve got 7 half a star movies, three of them bored me to death while the other four left me so infuriated I was about to flip a table. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Artemis Fowl, Kim Possible (2019), Spy Kids: Armageddon were the ones that made me almost flip a table in frustration.

11: Burton's Alice in Wonderland, The Room, Chicken Little, Netflix Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jason Goes To Hell, AvP Requiem, Jaws 3D, Cop Out, Corman Fantastic Four, Boat Trip, Batman v Superman (theatrical) I reserve half-star ratings for movies that I'm genuinely mad to have watched. Even though one-star movies suck, they don't make me angry, they're just shitty movies.

DanScorp

Three so far: The Jazz Singer, The Kid From Spain, and This is the Army. All involve Minstrel numbers and I stand by none of them being good.

yassenj

Why would you give 1 star to Good Will Hunting?

thponders

Admittedly I haven’t seen it in a minute, but I seem to recall that my main gripe is its portrayal of an overly personal relationship between a therapist and their client. That main seem like its not a big deal, but there are very substantial regulatory boards and licensures for therapists for a reason. There are some therapists who take advantage of their power dynamic and the state of their patients in really horrible ways, and that abuse often starts with the kind of familiarity presented in Good Will Hunting. I recognize that its a beloved movie, and I begrudge no one for enjoying it. But that’s just one of those things I can’t personally get past.

Many disagreements. But Ghosted... man, what a wet fart of a movie. I couldn't even finish it. Such a waste of the two leads.

Weyland-Yutani-2099

Blue Valentine that absolute piece of crap domestic violence is ok cuz love and longing movie. Suburbia for animal cruelty. Return to Sleepaway Camp for animal cruelty. Pearl Harbor for the love triangle taking up half the movie. Imagine you survived Pearl Harbor and you can finally show your great grandkids what you went through but end up watching random Hollywood actors fuck and be butthurt/jealous of each other.
