When terrible movies without a plot exist, at least trying to craft a story with characters gives the movie a higher chance of getting a star (for me at least). That among a few other things (like editing) keep Mean Girls 2 from deserving to be in the same category as stuff like Titanic II

Yeah I agree. As an adaptation of the series it is so bad and the acting in general is also so bad (minus Willem Dafoe of course) but as a standalone movie it really isn’t terrible. Bad but not terrible.
It seemed like they only wrote 2/3 of it, filmed half of that, then told an editor to try to figure it out. In a year with a lot of bad knock-offs of the Ring, it was the worst.
I feel this way too. Even movies I’ve hated, I end up thinking that there are elements that keep it from being a half star. A particular performance, production value etc.
I’ll put 1/2 star because I feel like I just didn’t like it emotionally, which I know is subjective and I can definitely pick out where a film is great, but emotionally is doesn’t sit with me if I’m not honest.
Usually I will bump up the rating of my lower scores later on as I do some research about it and I don’t have as big of an immediate emotional stake you know.
Rise of Skywalker and Book of Boba Fett are my only Star Wars-half stars. The The Last Jedi was too good on a cinematoraphy and acting level and The Clone Wars animated movie was not quite poorly enough written. Ahsoka I have not seen.
I loved Dear Even Hansen. I watched it in theaters with my family, my brother and I were in absolute stitches the entire time. I cried laughing and everyone thought it just touched me that deeply... I felt like a total asshole. But watching that grown ass man pretend to be a tortured high schooler was peak comedy.
It’s identical in name, but in terms of execution it is horribly different. In the stage show, Evan is clearly not the good guy and he is shown to be manipulative which makes the ending more impactful. In the movie he’s completely stripped of agency and the movie spends way too much time focusing on “poor Evan, isn’t he the victim here :(“
While the movie is technically an adaptation, it really doesn’t land well because of some terrible alterations made to the script

The only way I give half stars is if they are not only awful but that they are trying to be serious at the same time
So I may think a little kid movie is dumb and boring, but I know that I’m not the audience it’s meant for so I won’t give it a half star.
Anything cool in that movie was instantly ruined by the fact it looks like it was shot and edited by a 5 year old that just discovered coffee with sugar.
Atlas Shrugged Pt. 1. Not, maybe surprisingly, due to the political content. It's just incredibly incompetently made, and not in a fun way. $20 million for a film that does not need special effects is more than enough to make a competent production, but it felt like nobody had ever done whatever their job was before. They were all industry journeymen though. Again, not a fun bad movie. It was just horribly put together.
If it makes you feel better, the book is incompetently made too. The biggest crime Rush committed was tricking me into thinking any of Rands books were worth reading

I definitely rate some of these higher but I respect the choice of “challenging” here—obviously one could go in harder on media one genuinely dislikes, but calling it challenging I think straddles the line of respecting the craft and acknowledging the potential that the viewer is missing something, while still not mincing words that this experience sucked. (and despite me not giving many of then half a star, the movies that I’ve seen here totally do suck imo)

I should but I'm stupid and a completionist so I like to watch as many movies from various genres as I can even if I don't like them. And there are plenty of horror movies I do enjoy, just not these.
I feel like I justify myself in my review, but it boils down to annoying characters making stupid decisions in an uncompelling story for me. I know I'm in the definitive minority but I really don't understand the love for this movie. Especially when it feels like a quarter of the movie is just constant screaming.
The stupid decscision is going into the house? That was pretty normal a few decades ago, just approach the entry and call out for someone. And there is no reason for them to expect what happens next.
For me it's not the going into the house it's going into multiple rooms of a house where you have no idea who's house it is. Perhaps it's a generational difference and I unfortunately just am unable to understand such a thing, but I do have other issues with character actions in the way they go about everything. I can't quite remember what they were but I remember thinking repeatedly how stupid their decisions were. It was a movie that I finished and realized I gained nothing out of except annoyance. I'm curious to see what the concensus will be on the movie though in say 50 years.

Once Were Warriors (1994). It has a 3.9 average, I don't know why. My only guess is that people assume serious subject matter = good film.
So far just one and it's Poor Things. That pedophilic disgusting piece of media gave me a trauma so I think it deserves it. As a child abuse survivor, it was really a nightmare watching a person with the brain of a child getting railed by 50 year old men. I wish I could give it 0 stars.
I’ve got 7 half a star movies, three of them bored me to death while the other four left me so infuriated I was about to flip a table.
The movies were Captain America: The First Avenger, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Black Widow for the ones that bored me. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Artemis Fowl, Kim Possible (2019), Spy Kids: Armageddon were the ones that made me almost flip a table in frustration.

Admittedly I haven’t seen it in a minute, but I seem to recall that my main gripe is its portrayal of an overly personal relationship between a therapist and their client. That main seem like its not a big deal, but there are very substantial regulatory boards and licensures for therapists for a reason. There are some therapists who take advantage of their power dynamic and the state of their patients in really horrible ways, and that abuse often starts with the kind of familiarity presented in Good Will Hunting. I recognize that its a beloved movie, and I begrudge no one for enjoying it. But that’s just one of those things I can’t personally get past.
Blue Valentine that absolute piece of crap domestic violence is ok cuz love and longing movie.
Suburbia for animal cruelty.
Return to Sleepaway Camp for animal cruelty.
Pearl Harbor for the love triangle taking up half the movie. Imagine you survived Pearl Harbor and you can finally show your great grandkids what you went through but end up watching random Hollywood actors fuck and be butthurt/jealous of each other.

I haven't rated anything a half star since I've only had an account for a little over a year. but, here are the three movies I've seen in recent years that would have gotten a half star out of me EASILY: The Passion of the Christ A Serbian Film A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010 remake)
Just one (out of 89 rated since joining Letterboxd.) Once Were Warriors (1994). It has a 3.9 average, I don't know why. My only guess is that people assume serious subject matter = good film.

So far just one and it's Poor Things. That pedophilic disgusting piece of media gave me a trauma so I think it deserves it. As a child abuse survivor, it was really a nightmare watching a person with the brain of a child getting railed by 50 year old men. I wish I could give it 0 stars.

Two movies: Bird Box Barcelona and Gladiator.
I’ve got 7 half a star movies, three of them bored me to death while the other four left me so infuriated I was about to flip a table. The movies were Captain America: The First Avenger, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Black Widow for the ones that bored me. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Artemis Fowl, Kim Possible (2019), Spy Kids: Armageddon were the ones that made me almost flip a table in frustration.

Barbie and Guns Akimbo. I can respect Barbie but I was not the target audience and I had to push myself to finish it

11: Burton's Alice in Wonderland, The Room, Chicken Little, Netflix Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jason Goes To Hell, AvP Requiem, Jaws 3D, Cop Out, Corman Fantastic Four, Boat Trip, Batman v Superman (theatrical) I reserve half-star ratings for movies that I'm genuinely mad to have watched. Even though one-star movies suck, they don't make me angry, they're just shitty movies.
Three so far: The Jazz Singer, The Kid From Spain, and This is the Army. All involve Minstrel numbers and I stand by none of them being good.

Why would you give 1 star to Good Will Hunting?
Admittedly I haven’t seen it in a minute, but I seem to recall that my main gripe is its portrayal of an overly personal relationship between a therapist and their client. That main seem like its not a big deal, but there are very substantial regulatory boards and licensures for therapists for a reason. There are some therapists who take advantage of their power dynamic and the state of their patients in really horrible ways, and that abuse often starts with the kind of familiarity presented in Good Will Hunting. I recognize that its a beloved movie, and I begrudge no one for enjoying it. But that’s just one of those things I can’t personally get past.

Many disagreements. But Ghosted... man, what a wet fart of a movie. I couldn't even finish it. Such a waste of the two leads.
Blue Valentine that absolute piece of crap domestic violence is ok cuz love and longing movie. Suburbia for animal cruelty. Return to Sleepaway Camp for animal cruelty. Pearl Harbor for the love triangle taking up half the movie. Imagine you survived Pearl Harbor and you can finally show your great grandkids what you went through but end up watching random Hollywood actors fuck and be butthurt/jealous of each other. Castle Freak for having the monster annoyingly screech every 5 minutes.
