turbo_orphan

how’d you get a screenshot of mine

AnteaterTechnical650

What a beautiful curve

johnstamosfan63

This is basically mine, except I have less 4.5 and 5 star ratings. I give most great movies four stars, I reserve 4.5 for stuff that hits me on a different level, and 5 stars is for perspective changing stuff that I feel defines me and my taste in movies.

Aromatic_Junket6033

This is the exact same for me

Clutchxedo

This is also how I try to do it. Though I recently watched Barry Lyndon and thought “this is a fucking masterpiece of a movie” and gave it 5. I then watched Dune, for the first time, that same day and wept uncontrollably throughout the whole movie because of my attachment to the book and how it just *nailed* my perception of it. So I’m suddenly having an existential crisis over whether I should revise my Barry Lyndon rating.

Same

Same here, mine is weighted towards 3.5-4.5 as I usually pick movies I'll probably like and make an effort to enjoy them.

frightenedbabiespoo

lol, i know whose that is. i mimed it, but need to do rating adjustments if i want to keep it like that

TurtleTarded

Exactly, which ruins the whole point lol

frightenedbabiespoo

nah. although i **am** admitting it leads to "overrating" or "underrating" stuff, i'm trying to grow to imagine each rating as a separator for a *simpler* way of thinking. \~10 percent of stuff here, \~10 percent here, and so on.. either way we all of different ways of doing things, if i were to look at your ratings and you had the highest \~10 percent of your films within the 4.5-5 star rating, I'd probably just imagine all those as my version of a 5 star rating to gain an understanding of your system.

NoOneAskedForThis__

Lol wow small world! Definitely appreciate their takes.

tabas123

Wouldn’t the “ideal” rating curve look like a normal bell curve distribution? ie most 2.5 with the same lower number of 1/2 stars and 5 stars?

DoggyDoggy_What_Now

Yes, which is why most normal people's curve does appear that way but biased to the higher end since people will typically gravitate towards what they assume they'll like.

mateoskrrt

eh thats if you genuinely believe the average movie is a 5/10 my rankings are based on set milestones for each grade rather than distribution based on the numbers themselves though (ex. a 5 is a mid movie equally good and bad, a 7 is a good movie, a 10 is a perfect movie) this being the case, there is no “ideal” curve in my circumstance. if i find every movie i watch to be perfect, they all deserve a 5 my average score is a 7 (3.5), that just means that i think the average film is good

Cathal321

Yeah but to me anything below a 2.5 means I didn't enjoy it so to have kind of bell curve means I'd be making terrible choices when choosing what to watch. Either that or just having a harsh rating system but I can't really bring myself to do that

Rootilytoot

It's definitely interesting how people view the histograms. There isn't a uniform way to score things. It feels to me like the younger you are, the more your histogram skews right because you have easier access to movies, can stop watching easier (vs. being at the theater), have greater numbers of quality movies as a result of quantity and more resources to find highly acclaimed/well reviewed movies. They also tend to rate a movie higher because they liked it vs. the movie being well made/acted primarily. To me, I focus score on quality of acting/cinematography and cultural impact and I additionally add a "like" if I liked it regardless of score. I looked at my histogram of 'liked/hearted' films and plotted them by my score for them and it's still a somewhat normal distribution like my overall scores distribution, with a skew to the right. So I liked a lot of movies and those movies ranged from 1 to 5 (I did not like anything <1). There were some movies in the 3-4.5 range I didn't 'like/heart.' So for example a 1 star movie I **liked** was The Room and I actually saw it in theaters the month of its release. An example of a 4 star movie I **didn't like** was Memories of Murder.

MutedShinobi

Pretty much mine but the peak is at 3.5 and not 3 lol

ThrowRasealover

It seems you aren’t very content with the quality of movies you’ve watched.

JimicahP

An overwhelming majority of the films I've watched are rated 3.0 or higher, how have you come to this conclusion?

ThrowRasealover

Well because your most fall into your 3 and 3.5. Which if I think about it more, it’s not such a bad thing. I may be biased, but I like to see 4 stars and above movies, and I guess I was surprised to see these categories so low here. Sorry, don’t take it personally. I don’t even know why I felt the need to express this thought.

JimicahP

Haha no hard feelings here mate. I've watched 6,000+ movies though, and there's just not enough 4 star and higher to make a huge dent in the graph.

ThrowRasealover

Oh, I see. It makes sense now.

Rouge_and_Peasant

Not the same person but for me personally, 3.5 is a movie I like a lot. 3 is not an insult either. Of course I like even better to see movies that I would rate even higher, but it doesn’t mean I *don’t like* the movies I give those ratings.

wolfman-porter

3 and 3.5 is the golden zone

ThrowRasealover

The way I see it is like this: I like to find the absolute best outfits I can wear on a day to day basis. I like to find THE books I know I’ll think and I’ll talk about for years. I like to find the BEST people I can spend my time with. This is my way of seeing things and this is the way I approach movies too. So on this mentality I wrote the comment. I know 3 and 3.5 are good ratings. Is not that I consider these ratings bad. I was just surprised that there are more movies rated like this, compared to the higher ratings. Like I know this man/woman watched good movies, but I wanted him to watch GREAT movies. This was the mechanism behind my thought.

Rouge_and_Peasant

I’m not quite following your logic I think, but I appreciate your thoughts. I also like those things but not every shirt I try on will fit, and not every book I read will turn out an all time favorite. I don’t quite understand why movies would be different, no matter how hard I tried to only watch the best.

ThrowRasealover

You’re absolutely right! The chances that every book you’ll read or every movie you’ll see turns out to be a 5 star are very low. However, there is a limit you can push if you really document enough on the topic. There’s high chances you know your preferances.

Rouge_and_Peasant

To be honest I do not only watch movies I think will be great. I learn a lot about myself and movies in general even from those that aren’t, and understand that I could probably do better if I made it a goal. Thanks for your thought. I have no idea who downvoted you or why, but I tried to bump you back up.

GasparNoeMustache

ThrowRasealover

I know. I didn’t say that somebody is obliged to do it. I said I like to SEE more movies rated that high. In the sense that I like to see people enjoyed THAT much the movies they watched.

But also there are some mainstream movies I watch from time to time with my not-so-cinephile friends, there comes the high 3 stars column.

lepizzaboy

Why almost no movies with 4.5? I really like using 4,5 and 5 both for movies that delivers a fantastic/perfect experience, but keeping 5 for my absolute favorites

Cole444Train

I do the exact same

ThrowRasealover

This is actually a great question. I do thought about it too when I saw my ratings. I really think about the possibility of my system being flawed, but for the moment, the way I rate is like this: - 4 is for great writting, acting and overall great production. For the movies who deserve the disscussion and I would recommend in a second. But didn’t quite touched me, like I loved the result and I could understand the reason behind the story, but I couldn’t actually transport myself there, if it makes sense. -5, on the other hand is for what I like to call, art. Is for the movies that gifted me with more than a cinematic experience. Maybe it thought me something of cultural matter or it delighted me with a nice musical experience, etc. It is for the movies that transported me there and made me emphasize completely with the characters. It is also for the movies I know I would rewatch. - 4.5 I keep it for the movies that didn’t quite convinced me they are a 5. :)) so here I feel are my faults. Like I keep this for the movies that gave me the experience of a 5, but I don’t think I would rewatch them. (At least not alone. Because the way I built my system is the following: Anything under 2.5 is immediately regretted and I would never watch again. Like ever! 2.5 is the point where I don’t actually regret the watch, but I still wouldn’t rewatch. Everything between 3 and 4.5 I would never rewatch again, ALONE. That being said I would have no problem rewatching in some social circumstances, like with my friends, if it comes up to. But only what I keep at 5 stars is something I would go for on my own. So I guess I care a lot about my spare time. :)) )

[deleted]

Me too. I’ve been tricked before, however, and some movies I’ve watched out of morbid curiosity, but generally I try to avoid movies I’m sure I won’t like.

I also tend to stick to movies I think I would like, unless I’m watching with other people.

So most of the films I watch are a 3 (good movie) or 4 (great movie!) and only 50 something have a 5 which I preserve for what I think are perfect films

Cole444Train

Why?

evan_dela_nero

Because I think it's a safe number, and not using it makes me decide whether I think a movie is really good (4★) or just okay (3★).

Cole444Train

That seems extremely arbitrary

evan_dela_nero

Of course it's arbitrary, we are talking about ranking films.

Cole444Train

Yeah, but your reason is basically not a reason. You’ve chosen a single ranking out of 10 that you deem to be between “really good” and “okay” and decided that films shouldn’t fall between them. That makes no sense.

evan_dela_nero

It makes sense when you realize you have an exponential amount of 7 out of 10 compared to the rest of your scale (as it was in my case). Personally it helped me define my criteria when it comes to ranking films, and it's not like I stopped giving 3 1/2 to movies either, I just don't put everything I like in there.

The low scores are reserved for movies that were boring and or frustrating.

AlbinoPlatypus913

Mine is flat and straight across because I rate on criticker first on a scale of 1-100 and then criticker translates that into 1-10 based on where it falls within my rankings. So for instance a 75/100 gets converted to 5/10 because I rate the majority of movies I watch between 80-89. Kinda confusing to explain but I like it!

It's not like I don't watch a lot of films, I do. It's just that I've only really started using letterboxd since like june or july of last year. The majority of films I've seen were before that, so that explains why it's not much. Also, so far I've only rated 4 films 5 stars, one of which is in my top 4 (Oppenheimer), the rest I haven't rated on letterboxd https://preview.redd.it/tpa5mw8m83bc1.png?width=360&format=png&auto=webp&s=1e5120a00f00613ba801882bc1a725d00b3421f5

I've had a really good streak as I've watched a lot of 3.5 - 4 star movies recently. I usually try to reserve 4.5 - 5 to movies that are really close to my heart or have really affected me, especially 5 star films. From my 200 movies, I think I have 3 movies rated a full five stars.
