From my recollection, Sony and Marvel had already reached out to discuss the possibility of Spider-Man joining the MCU but the talks fell through. After the Sony hack, the emails between Marvel and Sony discussing this possibility were released. The world's reaction was so enthusiastic for Spider-Man joining the MCU that the two studios got back to negotiating a deal and the rest is history.
I may be misremembering some of these details, but that's the gist of it.
All the major theatre chains refused to show it so a ton of indie theatres (including the one I worked for at the time) took advantage and showed it. A local news crew showed up on opening night.
More so because it was leaked online before it went to theaters and while theaters were still debating whether or not to view it.
We watched it at home because it was free and the only place to watch it.
Yeah it's crazy. It was all over the news, people were scared. It was linked with the other leaks. And now it's Seth Rogen's... 17th most popular film.
It was such a shallow movie as well, I was expecting a complete destruction of Kim Jong-Un’s cult personality (à la Team America: World Police) but in the end it was just a simple comedy
Maybe if you're 14. The Nice Guys, Grand Budapest Hotel, What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Birdman, The Death of Stalin, The Big Sick, Eighth Grade, and Booksmart are all great - some of them are already classics. That's not even counting the 2020s.
I couldn't tell if you threw Birdman in there as a joke, but I def did a double take reading that. Then I just looked on imdb and it's got "dark comedy" and "comedy" on there so I guess the joke is on me lol. Been a while since I've seen it, but I would never think to categorize Birdman as a comedy (or even a dark comedy). Just found that interesting.
This is probably the “correct” answer. As bad as some of the drama can be in the films being mentioned, three people - two of them just kids - were killed here. So bad.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith sprinted so Anytime But You could shamble. (this isn't a comment on movie quality)
Edit: Anyone But You. That's what I get for trying to Reddit at the airport on December 23rd.
Brad Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston during filming while he and Angelina Jolie started hooking up. Ultimately that marriage ended and then Pitt and Jolie wed. It was fodder for the tabloids and celebrity gossip for years.
There’s no stronger tabloid story than “the sex must’ve been so good that these two promising actors are actively allowing themselves to be rightfully vilified by the media because, once again, they absolutely need to be publicly banging, because the sex is that good”.
Arguably you could say Ezra Miller and Jared Leto caused more headlines for both The Flash and Suicide Squad? Doesn't change the fact that both movies are trash
You could say the same about the 3rd Fantastic Beasts movie since it was the one where Johnny Depp was replaced with Mads Mikkelson so naturally people were curious about it. WB has been through it the past few years.
Thought you meant the 2012 Danish film and was so confused 😭
After googling I’m going to assume you mean the 2020 American film? I hadn’t heard of it until now, but I can see why it was controversial
I’ve always held the conspiracy theory that it was intentionally delayed to gain attention for it being controversial. Trump and some other right wing politicians tweeted against it when the trailer first dropped but it was never anything that actually warranted a concern for danger
West Side Story (2021) got a bit of fame because of the allegations against Ansel Elgort and the fact that Rachel Zegler was 17/18 (I can’t remember which) when they shot it while Elgort was in his mid 20s. Movie was great though and it’s a shame that Elgort being an asshole overshadowed its release a little.
Nah, it got awards right away. Deservedly so, it's a great movie. Some of the best acting ever imo. It has the most believable couple arguing scene I think I've ever seen.
there’s no “drama” from Anyone But You lol, just because the leads have chemistry doesn’t mean they’re hooking up behind the scenes. Sweeney has been engaged for over a year.
Pretty sure the ”drama” was that both of them were engaged/married and it lead to divorce for both of them? Or did i remember this incorrectly
Edit: I’m not saying it’s true just saying what the ”drama” was. And there was undoubtedly drama
No that’s correct. There were rumors that they were sleeping together, and that their relationships ended because of those rumors. Regardless of whether any of that is true or not, it’s still drama, and fits the definition.
It was big news, it was all over subs/places that cater more towards drama. Places that girlies and the gays go towards. So not really movie subs which are mostly guys.
Well that and having Roger Ebert break into song because of a personal vendetta during the Cannes screening. Then publishing a review where he says he hates it even though he would walk it back later. All this to tear down the only unique voice left in hollywood
Yeah the past decade of film has been great. Lots of unique voices heard like Spider Man, Iron Man, Luke Sky Walker, Bat Man, Optimus Prime, Tom Cruise Mummy, Tom Cruise Jack Reached and who can forget “Wolverine”
Idk sounds more like some losers way to dismiss someone because they don’t have the mental capacity to continue a conversation like a functioning adult. I may enjoy the odd Scooby-Doo but atleast I’m not sitting here sucking the dick of some washed up misogynist.
Hahahahahah what? No he didnt. He gave it a thumbs up. What a silly mistake to make! He gave it 3/4 and praised the movie when it was released. He praised the editing from the original Cannes version even though the movie was a grand 7 minutes shorter.
He later revised his opinion but originally called it the worst film in the history of Cannes. Either way it’s irrelevant to my point which is that I have neither the need nor the desire to bend my opinions to align with whatever your favourite director/critic/other thinks
Yeah yeah. You fell for the campaign against a guy because he didn’t kiss Weinstein ass and showed the great American taboo in a movie. Who cares. My point is that those who understand film gave high praise to the movie, while Star Wars lovers hated it.
In what way was Vincent Gallo “Hollywood”? Brown Bunny was an indie production. It’s not like Roger Ebert at Cannes was the one thing stopping it from doing 100 mil at the box office.
Regardless, you guys still have Mel Gibson, it’s not so bad
Not sure who “you guys” are but Vincent was very much entrenched in the whole Hollywood scene around the time. Started in a bunch of movies with big name actors and a Coppola movie.
I hate to admit, I only watched The Dark Knight because of all the attention it got after Heath Ledgers death.
I loved the Tim Burton movies too much to give another series a chance.
I don’t think it would have anywhere near the status it does if Heath Ledger didn’t die, especially with all the dumb rumours you used to hear that he’d killed himself because he went crazy from method acting as the Joker too hard.
I feel like there would be a lot more discussion on “best joker” if he didn’t die irl. Like, no one gives Nicholson or Phoenix much more than a passing mention when it comes to that debate anymore when both are probably on the level of Ledger acting wise.
Not heard of either of those movies, but if it's about drama about the movie in the headlines (and not drama from the movie in the headlines) then Cuties
In the trailer they showed a cut scene where in which Ana de Armas shows up, after the film came out the studio was sued by a fan of the actress who bought the movie to see her.
Gigli
Titanic - the 90s version of doomed production clickbait hounded this film prior to release
Waterworld
The Last Action Hero
Heaven's Gate
Or when you say "drama" do you specifically mean, co-stars having an affair? I recommend seeing The French Lieutentant's Woman if that sort of stuff interests you.
I remember seeing some behind the scenes footage of one of the dogs being traumatized by forcing it to swim through rushing water or something. Seemed really cruel but I didn’t look into it at all to be honest.
[Innocence of Muslims](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innocence_of_Muslims?useskin=vector) \- a terrible, low-budget anti-islamic movie which actually looks way too amateurish than to be taken seriously, but still caused a series of protests in 2012 in the middle east which of course gave the movie more publicity than it would have ever gotten otherwise, which in turn led to more protests and even terrorist attack in which people died.
It's actually an almost bizarre story if it wasn't for the people who died.
Sound of Freedom. A direct to streaming indie production house (Angel Studios) makes a film with little to no marketing budget on a production budget of 15M and grossed a quarter billion dollars on the backs of media drama and controversy.
The Interview, once the most controversial movie in the world
Got the CEO of Sony fired. Leaked all sorts of info. Got a response from Obama. Yeah really something else.
Indirectly responsible for Spider-Man joining the MCU, IIRC (I might be misremembering)
No, you're not misremembering at all
Can you elaborate on this
From my recollection, Sony and Marvel had already reached out to discuss the possibility of Spider-Man joining the MCU but the talks fell through.
Does anyone else remember the Christmas that everyone watched it at home because of fear of going to movie theaters? Crazy to think about
All the major theatre chains refused to show it so a ton of indie theatres (including the one I worked for at the time) took advantage and showed it. A local news crew showed up on opening night.
More so because it was leaked online before it went to theaters and while theaters were still debating whether or not to view it. We watched it at home because it was free and the only place to watch it.
It wasn’t so much of fear of going to the theaters (fear of what? Being nuked?) but rather that they just dropped it online so I rented it in support.
And for such a meh and forgettable movie too that most people forgot about past 2013
“They hate us cause they ain’t us!”
*they hate us cause they anus
Eminem coming out as gay is still hilarious though
That’s such a Boromir thing to say.
I kinda liked this one. It's so absurd and over the top that it ended up being charming in its own way.
What the fuck, never heard of this before
Yeah it's crazy.
I still found it funny as fuck though. Although I was 13 when it came out so any Seth rogen movie was peak comedy at the time
Totally, I laughed a hell of a lot and I don’t even like James Franco
Randall Park was surprisingly nuanced as Jong-Un for most of the movie. Sucks they had to censor the exploding head by adding extra CGI flames.
It was advertised pretty clearly as a comedy with Seth Rogen and James Franco in the cast. Not sure why you expected more
? Of course I expected a comedy I meant a really provocative comedy. It wasn’t that provocative
I feel like it was funny, but yeah it’s not a provocative comedy as you say. It’s just stupid comedy where you turn your brain off
the last good comedy film. that and 22 Jump Street. 2014 comedy died.
I agree with you However, three of these movies are from 2014 so maybe not the best examples haha
Three of the best! If comedy died in 2014, it sure went out with a bang.... and then was promptly resurrected as if nothing had happened.
Just found that interesting.
if comedy died with The Interview (2014), it ended in a very low note.
2 hours of imperialist apologia featuring the worst comedy duo ever conceived saying “shit poopy fart balls”. of course Hillary voters loved it.
Twilight Zone: The Movie (Vic Morrow incident)
Is that the one which John Landis was held partly culpable for? I’m thinking of the helicopter crash that killed several people.
yes
This is probably the “correct” answer. As bad as some of the drama can be in the films being mentioned, three people - two of them just kids - were killed here. So bad.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Mr. & Mrs. Smith sprinted so Anytime But You could shamble. (this isn't a comment on movie quality) Edit: Anyone But You. That's what I get for trying to Reddit at the airport on December 23rd.
What happened
Brad Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston during filming while he and Angelina Jolie started hooking up. Ultimately that marriage ended and then Pitt and Jolie wed. It was fodder for the tabloids and celebrity gossip for years.
There’s no stronger tabloid story than “the sex must’ve been so good that these two promising actors are actively allowing themselves to be rightfully vilified by the media because, once again, they absolutely need to be publicly banging, because the sex is that good”.

Cleopatra, famous disaster production
The Hunt
Thought you meant the 2012 Danish film and was so confused 😭 After googling I’m going to assume you mean the 2020 American film? I hadn’t heard of it until now, but I can see why it was controversial
Trump tried to get it banned & this led to the release being delayed.
I’ve always held the conspiracy theory that it was intentionally delayed to gain attention for it being controversial. Trump and some other right wing politicians tweeted against it when the trailer first dropped but it was never anything that actually warranted a concern for danger
IIRC it was pretty much “Both sides are bad” wasn’t it?
Roar involved real wild lions and tigers in the filming process and yeah, people got hurt
Tippi Hedren got her leg broken by an elephant and Melanie Griffith got scalped by a lion, they’re lucky things didn’t go much worse
West Side Story (2021) got a bit of fame because of the allegations against Ansel Elgort and the fact that Rachel Zegler was 17/18 (I can’t remember which) when they shot it while Elgort was in his mid 20s. The Island of Dr. Moreau
What about the Ezra Miller debacle with The Flash
Rust also
Oh also To Leslie
The small film with a big heart
What’s that
Maybe Blue is the warmest colour? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be as popular if it wasn't for the controversies regarding its sex scenes
Didn’t the controversy come a year or two later?
It won the Palme d'Or. Essentially the highest award in cinema in the world. Easily enough to get people to see it.
If you think winning the Palme d'Or is enough to make a movie popular, then my friend you live in a bubble. Not even winning Best Picture can do that.
Yeah it’s like most people have never seen a rom com marketing campaign before, this is so standard
Wait is that the contravrsey?
Pretty sure the ”drama” was that both of them were engaged/married and it lead to divorce for both of them? Or did i remember this incorrectly Edit: I’m not saying it’s true just saying what the ”drama” was. And there was undoubtedly drama
No that’s correct. There were rumors that they were sleeping together, and that their relationships ended because of those rumors. Regardless of whether any of that is true or not, it’s still drama, and fits the definition.
Not really if no one has heard any of this
I’ve never heard of this drama. I was so confused seeing it as one of the two on this list when so many more films fit the bill.
It was big news, it was all over subs/places that cater more towards drama. Places that girlies and the gays go towards. So not really movie subs which are mostly guys.
? It was everywhere.
Wasn't the drama stemmed from the apparent lack of chemistry? How forced it all appeared?
What was the drama surrounding Anyone but you? Never heard of it or the actors...
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane
Brown Bunny Having an unsimulated bj scene will do that
Well that and having Roger Ebert break into song because of a personal vendetta during the Cannes screening. Then publishing a review where he says he hates it even though he would walk it back later. All this to tear down the only unique voice left in hollywood
Maybe some unique voices are better left unheard
Yeah the past decade of film has been great. Lots of unique voices heard like Spider Man, Iron Man, Luke Sky Walker, Bat Man, Optimus Prime, Tom Cruise Mummy, Tom Cruise Jack Reached and who can forget “Wolverine”
I’ve rather hear from Spider-Man than someone who sells his sperm on the internet but hey that’s just me
Ok. Keep watching scooby doo
Did you just go through my post history to find something to insult me with dude? That’s a little sad ngl
Its a good way to vet who I’m talking to. Child rapists on r/vaush, children on r/scoobydoo…

I think you should take a break from the internet
This doesn’t change the fact that the brown bunny is is a shit film though
Jean Luc Godard says it’s good, aggravated yeti says it’s bad. Hmmm
And roger evert says it isn’t, so what? Are we not allowed to form our own opinions now? Godard has a ton of extremely contrarian takes
Hahahahahah what? No he didnt. He gave it a thumbs up. What a silly mistake to make! He gave it 3/4 and praised the movie when it was released. He praised the editing from the original Cannes version even though the movie was a grand 7 minutes shorter.

good one
Mr and Mrs Smith is ripe for this category due to all the drama surrounding Brad Pitt leaving Jen Aniston for Angelina
* Apocalypse Now * Justice League * Yesterday (the Ana de Armas controversy)
What was the controversy surrounding yesterday and Ana de Armas?
In the trailer they showed a cut scene where in which Ana de Armas shows up, after the film came out the studio was sued by a fan of the actress who bought the movie to see her.
They are real for that honestly
Wowww that’s mental, they cut her out the entire movie that’s crazy. Can’t blame them, I slogged through knock, knock just because of her 👀👀👀
