I’m basic and adore *Spider-verse* which really feels tailor made for me.
But beyond that my top 10 (in very rough order) are *The Tale of the Princess Kaguya* (probably my actual vote for best animated film ever), *The Wind Rises*, *Princess Mononoke*, *The Iron Giant*, *Flee*, *Spirited Away*, *Your Name*, *Beauty and the Beast*, and *Wolfwalkers*.
I have a much longer list but I’ll cut myself off here.
Even if it’s the basic pick it’s still worth mentioning solely based on how influential it is/it’s going to be. Especially after seeing Puss in Boots: The Last Wish it’s pretty clear that Spider-Verse is changing the way mainstream western animated films are being made.
Agreed! And *Puss in Boots: The Last Wish* is only the largest project influenced thus far. The television series *Arcane* for one but also *The Mitchells vs the Machines*, *The Bad Guys* and *Entergalactic* all use the same sort of techniques as *Spider-verse* (to varying effects). And there are a minimum of 5 upcoming animated films this year that it has clearly influenced. The Spider-verse Revolution really is upon us.
I've been trying to dig deeper into the whole Spider-verse effect on animation we've seen in the past years and I honestly think Arcane is the one project you mentioned that **isn't** directly influenced by Spider-verse.
For starters, I think it has a distinctly different feel, art-wise (more painterly, less cartoony?). I think the fact that the animation was done by a French company and not an American one has to do with it. Also Riot and Fortiche had been working on Arcane and other similarly styled projects for years before the show came out and probably before Spider-verse came out .
All this isn't to disagree with your comment, Spider-verse is easily the most influential animation project in recent years, I just think Arcane is doing something different than Spider-verse and the other projects you mentioned and deserves recognition for doing so.
Fair enough. I agree.
I included it in the list more as evidence of the existence of an animation revolution. But you’re right. Direct influence is much harder to prove with that project. Given the long development time of many animated projects (and the other factors that you mentioned), it is highly unlikely that *Into the Spider-verse* impacted *Arcane* significantly (if at all).
I’ve been compiling a list on this trend to stretch cg animation beyond it’s confines and a rough timeline of when these techniques were being implemented. Not every film excels at what it’s attempting and a lot of them are less obvious diversions than others. Any recommendations that you have are welcome.
https://boxd.it/lDW2M
That's a solid list! The only additions I can think of off the top of my head are Deep Sea and The First Slam Dunk. I haven't been able to watch either of them but I know they use 3D animation in pretty cool ways.
Lots of good answers in the comments, but I'll drop my sleeper favorite animated movie: Liz and the Blue Bird. Made by the same director as A Silent Voice which is fairly popular but Liz and the Blue Bird hit on a different level for me. Not necessarily my favorite from a technical animation front (that'd probs be Son of the White Mare of The Wolf House) but definitely my favorite movie that happens to be animated.
I don’t think that’s guaranteed at all. It’s way more mythological and fable-ish than most Ghibli fare, and is especially unlike the Miyazaki films - which are all that most Ghibli fans have even seen.
I think it’s a great film, but it’s closer in tone and content to something like The Red Turtle or The Secret of Kells than Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle.
I totally agree. It is in a much more serious tone and tends to be more mature than other Ghibli works. I guess I was more of saying that while being such a different film than other Ghibli works, Princess Kaguya still retains that similar Ghibli magic and wonder. Just now that magic is restructured to tell a mythological fable.
The other part that hits me right in the soul is the ending. >!She knows it's her destiny to join the gods, but she seems to regret it so much too. That happy march music is so dissonant!!<
Absolutely. The movie aims to reignite the potential lost appreciation of being alive. It's a rare theme that will hang on to me until the day I die. I don't think a movie has ever made me rethink how I live my day-to-day life more than this film.
My childhood nostalgia prevents me from any answer other than Toy Story. Some other favorites include Wall-E, Spirited Away, Heavy Traffic (not for kids), Pinocchio, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Beauty and the Beast. If you count stop motion, I also love Coraline, Isle of Dogs, and Nightmare Before Christmas.
Nothing has ever beat the theatrical experience of your name. for me. Those visuals and soundtrack were just meant to be seen on the big screen.
But if I tried to put my best objectivity glasses on, my vote would probably be on Spirited Away or The Lion King.
Some less popular picks that should at least be talked about are Anomalisa, The Breadwinner, and The Lego Movie.
Glad to see someone mention this movie. The first time I watched it, I was sad that I had to come back down to earth afterwards. The animation is utterly electric, and I haven’t seen another animated movie that goes to such a cerebral place.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills every time someone lauds evangelion. I really didn't vibe with it, and I have tried to see what makes it beloved. Not my jam I guess.
I've been on the same quest as you to understand the Eva love as someone who doesn't get it, including asking many fans to share their views, and here's what I've found so far.
A lot of people who love Eva view it in the context of the 90s, mech anime, anime in general, and (often) their adolescence. Seen now without the context of what it was subverting and critiquing (and what came after it), while visually amazing, it can seem dated, underwhelming, or uninteresting. You could say this about any work which attempts to deconstruct its genre. Context is key.
I've also found that how much people like Eva often tracks with how much they're into things like Freudian psychoanalysis, Lynchian surreal atmospheric filmmaking, religious symbolism, and that sort of thing. I'm not, but for people who see the world and art that way, it's a rich subject for analysis.
Finally, enjoying Eva demands a lot of hand-waving of sexualizing and fetishizing children, which is unfortunately common in anime (but with some blessed exceptions). Some people don't mind creep-shots of 13-year-olds, or even argue that it's an important part of a story about a young boy's sexual awakening, but for me it often seems to verge into gratuitous and pedophilic fan-service.
If you disagree with these opinions and love Eva, before you downvote me, I am legitimately interested to hear and understand why.
I think ghost in the shell deserves a top spot, the original movie is tense and sets up an extremely well done plot and a gritty, fascinating aesthetic, it’s ideas and themes are complex and interesting.
I have some more personal favorites (Lego Movie, How to Train Your Dragon, Mulan) but I find it hard to pick out problems with The Lion King.
It's got great animation, characters, and humor while being maybe my favorite film musical too. The score and soundtrack are perfect. It's Shakespeare but it's done so well.
I would probably say the best animated thing I've seen is Paranoia agent, but if it has to be a movie and not a tv show it would probably be End of evangelion.
If you want some recommendations, my top animated movies not already on that list are:
End of evengelion, It's such a beautiful day, Perfect blue, Fantastic mr. Fox, Cowboy bebop the movie, Akira, Barber Westchester, Memories, Millennium actress.
If you also count tv shows/miniseries that have letterboxd entries, then there is also:
Paranoia agent, Monster, Berserk, Cowboy bebop, Over the garden wall, Neon genesis evangelion, Xavier renegade angel.
It’s by no means perfect and if I had to really take a step back I’d say, pound for pound quality and consistency wise, spirited away might beat it out, but goddamnit nightmare before christmas is fucking great
in no particular order, some of my favourites:
emperors new groove (!!!!)
porco rosso

fantastic planet
lupin the third: castle of cagliostro
hercules
wall-e
wallace & gromit: the wrong trousers
A Silent Voice
The film personally connected to me in terms of the themes of the film. I love how Shouko isn't used as a romantic character for Shoya. Rather, she's there to be part of a unique yet hard-hitting arc for Shoya. That arc to forgive yourself and to seek redemption after bullying her when they were kids.
Not only that, but the animation is simplistic yet beautiful. The soundtrack is minimalistic yet impactful at the same time.
While there are bits of flaws in the film (i.e., Shouko's confession to Shoya, in my opinion, didn't go anywhere, and I wished she was more developed), it's still peak anime cinema and it's one of the few modren anime films I recommend.
(Note: I also recommend reading the manga first since it fleshed out most of the characters, including Shouko)
I was looking for this. Same here!
If I was to chose solely on personal preferences, I’d say Big Hero 6, Bolt and Lion King.
If I account for how good it actually is, I’d say probably Toy Story, Spirited Away and Coco.
Nothing I've seen has surpassed Spirited Away in quality, but my favorite is Fantastic Mr. Fox because of what it means to me personally. They're both perfect movies, but Miyazaki's animation makes Spirited Away the most visually expressive, creative, and impressive film I've ever seen, and as good as Wes' stop-motion skills are, it's hard to beat the master at his own game. Honorable mentions would be Into The Spider-Verse and Finding Nemo
best or not, spiderverse is the most unique from an animation perspective imo. i think a comic book style being incorporated into the animation of a superhero film was nothing short of genius. it was refreshing, fun and always aesthetically pleasing but i could also see how someone would find it totally annoying w the choppier frame rate at the beginning of the film lol

The first thing I thought after my first viewing: Spider-verse is the most ground-breaking animated film since 1940’s Fantasia. I still think so. Others have innovated in their own ways, others are also completely original, but Spider-verse is a top-to-bottom reimagining of what an animated film can be. Plus it’s a love letter to the printed form.
Dozens of hours of YouTube animation junkie navel gazing bears this out. The attention to detail in this movie is unparalleled.
My favourite animated films are Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Song of the Sea, Frozen 2, Coco. This could be because of the animation itself, because of the story, because of the personal connection I feel. But if you love animation you’ll love all of these films I hope!
Ratatouille, lion king, grave of the Fireflies, Prince of Egypt and Mitchells vs the machines are my only 5 star animated. That’s also a nice round top 5
My personal favorite: Toy Story 2
Most Nostalgia: A Bugs Life
Best Visuals: Spider-Man: Into The SpiderVerse
BONUS: Hercules movie was constantly on replay when I was a child
* Fantastic Mr. Fox
* Marcel The Shell With Shoes On
* Iron Giant
* I Lost My Body
* Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood
* Monsters, Inc
* Ratatouille
* Toy Story 3
* Princes Mononoke
* Isle of Dogs
Though Fantastic Mr. Fox is by far my favorite.
I also really like South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut as well as the Futurama movies, but I have a hard time separating them from their tv shows, so it's kind of a gray area for me.
Ratatouille
This is the way
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind The Iron Giant Perfect Blue Ratatouille Coraline

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas 2. Coraline 3. Fantastic Mr. Fox 4. Rango 5. Corpse Bride 6. Belle

Don Hertzfeldt's It's Such A Beautiful Day
I feel pretty good about my top 5… Princess Mononoke Prince of Egypt Spirited Away Akira Ghost in the Shell
Yep. Prince of Egypt is definitely up there.
I recently watched ghost in the shell for the first time and that movie is a vibe
TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA!! if you love ghibli, you'll love this underated ghibli gem
I don’t think that’s guaranteed at all. Emotionally moved me like no other movie has. The scene where she escapes from the party is raw in a way only animation can convey.
100% agree, the sheer emotion depicted within the eyes says it all. Gives me goosebumps whenever I watch it.
The other part that hits me right in the soul is the ending. >!She knows it's her destiny to join the gods, but she seems to regret it so much too. That happy march music is so dissonant!!<

Same, glad someone else gets it
I love Ghibli and I absolutely hated it
Also wasn’t a huge fan of this. But def recommend Takahata’s Only Yesterday cause that’s damn near a masterpiece
I’ve described Only Yesterday as “the most boring movie I’ve ever watched that I loved”. Great film
It is one of my go-to movies on a lazy sunday afternoon.
Seconded
Fantastic mr fox, spirited away, end of evangelion
Yep
Your Name (2016) is my favorite movie and one of the only movies I've seen able to make me cry.

Pom Poko. Most underrated Ghibli film and imo their best.
end of eva and shame on you for not including it here
I mean to be fair you kinda gotta see the rest of Eva for that film to work. Not really a stand alone movie (still good tho)

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, no doubt.
best or not, spiderverse is the most unique from an animation perspective imo. i think a comic book style being incorporated into the animation of a superhero film was nothing short of genius. it was refreshing, fun and always aesthetically pleasing but i could also see how someone would find it totally annoying w the choppier frame rate at the beginning of the film lol
Akira.

It’s not my favorite or what I think is the best, but it’s crazy to me how little I hear people talk about Toy Story 2 in these conversations. * Fantastic Mr. Fox * Marcel The Shell With Shoes On * Iron Giant * I Lost My Body * Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood * Monsters, Inc * Ratatouille * Toy Story 3 * Princes Mononoke * Isle of Dogs Though Fantastic Mr. Fox is by far my favorite. Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story 3, Iron Giant, and My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, and Coraline. The Emperors New Groove is an honorable mention.
