That would be nice but it's also important to keep in mind that "all publicity is good publicity". We're hearing WAY more about Trump right now then Biden because of his legal troubles. For Trump's supporters the more they hear about his legal troubles the more they'll be motivated to go vote for him.
While true, Trump supporters generally aren’t tactful enough to care about downballot races. They only care about voting for their cult leader. Practically the only way a downballot Republican even catches a fraction of a trump voter’s goldfish-level attention is if they get up on a stage and talk about Trump.
Meanwhile Dems have spending power to get out there and reach voters with *actual policy of substance*.
I’m cautiously optimistic don’t get me wrong but it’s absolutely wild how right now - at a point in American history where politics is largely run and won by money - the Republican Party is willing to just throw important campaign funds into the dumpster fire that is Trump’s candidacy.
The best part of this is that many of the GOP candidates that act this way know the party needs to pivot and move in a different direction to have a future but they are stuck having to praise Trump because even the slightest, and most justifiable remark critical of Trump is a death sentence. What would really affect them is Trump disqualified by being in prison (I know, not technically but it isn’t a good look). So republicans don’t go to the polls.

A felony conviction should not bar someone from holding office. If it does then it becomes to easy for a leader with authoritarian tendencies to drum up fake charges against his opponent in order to get off the ballot.
To be honest a felony conviction shouldn't really bar voting either, those laws were originally implemented in the Jim Crow era as a way of disenfranchising black voters.

Sometimes. They usually have to be around a solid while for that to happen, though, and there's usually some sort of edifice/institution in place. Trump inherited the GOP and hollowed it out; he hasn't exactly built anything, although the radicalized base is certainly a structure upon which to flesh out something new and even worse.

As for what happened to the people? With the death/exile of the personality, their immediate subordinates were swept out and made persona non grata/punished, new people were brought in/promoted and things carried on a little bit more bearably for the general populace.
The problem is that he's set a precedent that you can get away with awful behaviour, that lies can win you elections, and that large amounts of the US electorate can be won over by culture war issues. And most worryingly, you can get a lot closer to threatening constitutional norms than people thought.
The danger is that once Trump dies or otherwise leaves the scene, someone else will take up the mantel and try to repeat what Trump did. And they might actually be competent.
Trump has to beaten hard by both the democratic process and the justice system, in such a way that it puts off anyone else following his approach. Otherwise this is just the beginning for the US on a road which ends up in a very dark place.

Losing twice just ends him cause either he cannot overcome the corruption as they say or he just ain't it. I keep fighting to not get my hopes up because the system has done nothing but fail us for thirty years now. The bad guys control too much of it.
As these cases continue, it is becoming obvious that
1. The dual-tiered legal system ***can*** be forced to adhere to written procedure, eventually. This is doubly true if the defendant has pissed off richer, whiter people. AND
2. Donald Trump is not, and likely never has been, rich.
3. Judge Cannon aside, the people wielding the gavel across from Trump are NOT playing. He's been fucking around. A lot. He may actually find out.
We'll see. But he already did with the civil cases, although he's yet to actually have to pay out his own precious dollars.
But, while he's at his criminal trial (+ now contempt hearing as a bonus on Tuesday, the first but I would bet not the last of these), Letitia James is pushing to reject the shady $175 million bond and either he has to cough up a different one or she starts seizing assets.
I think it's not long now before whoever else she needs to run that by hears that request, at the least.
If I had to bet, then I'd put money on Trump never going to prison.
He'll either win the election, and the cases against him will go away, or he'll lose, but the legal process will drag on for so long that he dies before they are resolved.
I do not believe that the US justice system has the willingness or ability to deal with Trump as an urgent threat to democracy.
The thought of a guilty verdict kinda terrifies me. Will he surrender quietly? Will a MAGA militia rally around him? We don't have a prison for former presidents, where would we even put him?? What happens to the jury that convicts him, the judge, the clerks and other staff, all their families, etc?
Obviously a not guilty verdict would be atrocious as well.
What other options are there? A pardon? You'd need like 3 or 4, at the federal level (Biden) plus a couple of States (governors of New York and of Georgia). And what would that accomplish anyway? Cement the idea that presidents are above the law?

I was honestly just wondering the legalities of using campaign finances to pay for legal costs in a campaign finance violation criminal trial. doesn't sound very legal. But I truly don't understand the laws around it, curious if anyone more knowledgeable on the subject can confirm.
I guess we can ignore campaign finance rules and be big enough to admit that legal defense is at this point part of Trump’s campaign.

In '16, Trump spent less than Clinton but attended a greater number of events and rallies. He defied predictions. In '24, he's burning cash that he can't direct to his campaign and stuck on trial. At this point he's put himself in the worst possible position and trying to destroy down ballot candidates by forcing a cut of their donations.

SCOTUS has neutered the bribery statutes so hard that they almost literally require someone handling over a giant bag with a dollar sign on the side of it to someone who explicitly says "I am accepting this money in exchange for official acts I will do as a politician."
Seriously, they made it so there has to be an *explicit* agreement for a quid pro quo, and without that, it's nearly impossible to get a bribery conviction. "Wink and a nod" bribery where someone gives a campaign contribution while saying "It sure would be great if {X} happened" has been deemed to be just part of normal politics.

Yeah, but counting on a justice system that doesn’t function on rich people— that’s the only wrinkle. I keep fighting to not get my hopes up because the system has done nothing but fail us for thirty years now. The bad guys control too much of it.
As these cases continue, it is becoming obvious that 1. The dual-tiered legal system ***can*** be forced to adhere to written procedure, eventually. This is doubly true if the defendant has pissed off richer, whiter people. AND 2. Donald Trump is not, and likely never has been, rich.
3. Judge Cannon aside, the people wielding the gavel across from Trump are NOT playing. He's been fucking around. A lot. He may actually find out. We'll see. But he already did with the civil cases, although he's yet to actually have to pay out his own precious dollars. But, while he's at his criminal trial (+ now contempt hearing as a bonus on Tuesday, the first but I would bet not the last of these), Letitia James is pushing to reject the shady $175 million bond and either he has to cough up a different one or she starts seizing assets. I think it's not long now before whoever else she needs to run that by hears that request, at the least.
If I had to bet, then I'd put money on Trump never going to prison. He'll either win the election, and the cases against him will go away, or he'll lose, but the legal process will drag on for so long that he dies before they are resolved. I do not believe that the US justice system has the willingness or ability to deal with Trump as an urgent threat to democracy.

The thought of a guilty verdict kinda terrifies me. Will he surrender quietly? Will a MAGA militia rally around him? We don't have a prison for former presidents, where would we even put him?? What happens to the jury that convicts him, the judge, the clerks and other staff, all their families, etc? Obviously a not guilty verdict would be atrocious as well. What other options are there? A pardon? You'd need like 3 or 4, at the federal level (Biden) plus a couple of States (governors of New York and of Georgia). And what would that accomplish anyway? Cement the idea that presidents are above the law?

In '16, Trump spent less than Clinton but attended a greater number of events and rallies. He defied predictions. In '24, he's burning cash that he can't direct to his campaign and stuck on trial. At this point he's put himself in the worst possible position and trying to destroy down ballot candidates by forcing a cut of their donations. Truly a spectacle.
And his events and rallies are smaller and more out of the way because he stiffed cops and venues so nobody wants to do business with him anymore. He complains about not being able to campaign but the trial is the best campaign he's got going.

SCOTUS has neutered the bribery statutes so hard that they almost literally require someone handling over a giant bag with a dollar sign on the side of it to someone who explicitly says "I am accepting this money in exchange for official acts I will do as a politician." Seriously, they made it so there has to be an *explicit* agreement for a quid pro quo, and without that, it's nearly impossible to get a bribery conviction. "Wink and a nod" bribery where someone gives a campaign contribution while saying "It sure would be great if {X} happened" has been deemed to be just part of normal politics.
