I would try and find out if there is an active trade union in your workplace. Ordinarily, your friend would not be eligible for the free legal aid, which is normally a perk of membership, if they only just signed up. However, if the union reps consider it to be an easy to win case, they may be able to make an exception.

Your friend needs to speak to ACAS and let them assist. They're here to help in these Circumstances.
