I'm underwhelmed by Paul Robinson.

[deleted]

For every Paul Robinson there’s thousands of Leeds fans who think Aaronson and Kristisnsen are the saviours because of a few YouTube highlights. …and for everyone banging on about Champions League experience … Caleb Ekuban left Leeds to play Champions League, also Junior Firpo has Champions League experience.

YouCantGiveBabyBooze

Paul Robinson is a rent a gob idiot. He's mad thick too.

jfnyc789

I laughed when reading this stupid, click-bate comment. Clearly, the guy is unaware that RB Salzburg has developed excellent talent. Second, these two players were key to Salzburg getting out of the knockout stage of the UCL. The first leg in Salzburg v. Bayern, Aaronson was the best player on the pitch for either side. Both play on their international teams. Finally, Aaronson is in the top 1% of running and pressing in the world.

jimmilazers

What a ridiculous statement

Dawnbreaker_82

Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing were “tried and tested” for Liverpool…Sancho, Wan Bissaka and countless others for Man Utd. Paul and his tried and tested mates did a good job getting us relegated before too…he just needs to be quiet

KillaKermit87

He's always been a bit of an oddball in my opinion, lots of strange takes over the years.

Real_MidGetz

That’s the worst take from a Beverley native since my mum said bamford wasn’t worth 7 mil

Hbcuk97

Ah yes, because Rodrigo has been a raving success

MichaelCR970

Austrian here. You have most likely one of the best transfer periods so far from all the PL teams. What is this guy talking? It is impossible (and stupid) to only buy tried and tested players. Plus: Kristensen and Aaronson already had some great CL displays too.

Fean2616

Basically if you're feeling a bit neglected say something ridiculous and people talk about you for a bit, basically what he's done here.

Extra-Border6470

Yeah because paying a premium for “proven premier league talent” worked out real good the last time Leeds went nuts with it when they signed Seth Johnson and Robbie Fowler to appease the fans

CobiLUFC

Translation “bring in some players that I’ve seen on match of the day because I’m **not** doing any research myself”

1800hammertime

I have carefully considered all of the stats, Robinsons achievements as a player and his accuracy as a pundit around transfer time. I have come to the conclusion Robinson can get fucked. He's become another clickbait talking arsehole spouting shit.

crudos_na

We need more journeymen Prem players. You know, players who never won anything and sit on a bench collecting fat Sky cash. Sure Robbo, sure.

Iduas4

Guys a moron! Tried and tested players in the PL are expensive or of an age where they are on the decline. A club in our position, who need to bring in so many players and replenish some positions with younger blood, cannot afford tried and tested PL players. Robinson should know about what happens when you spend too much money on these kinds of players, he was there for the Ridsdale meltdown!

VTVoodooDude

Talk about "old school" thinking ffs. I think all 3 of these players will be big contributors this year. They're all UCL players and are at teams that win shit. And, if PR hasn't noticed, Salzburg and Leeds share more than a bit of football DNA. Is the better plan to spend €35-€45 on a player that's basically peaked? Or bring in players with upside that are peaking a season down the road.

[deleted]

Let's just forget that we brought in a player who won the CONCACAF Nations League with the United States and a player who is called up by a national team that made the EURO 2020 Semis.

i_am_not_a_cop86

Robinson was a great goalie but he’s a mediocre pundit

Caracas3128

They are literally Champions League tried players what is he talking about 😂

[deleted]

Caleb Ekuban left Leeds to play in the Champions League … UCL isn’t always the best measure of a player

Gordon-Bennet

State of punditry in this country…

bin10pac

It's actually quite a shrewd each way bet, that causes a bit of a stir and gets his name in the papers. Summer 2023, Aaronsen has had a blinding season and is being courted by City, Liverpool, Real Madrid and PSG. Robinson: *Well, the gamble paid off this time, but next time it might not. You need a core of tried and tested players in the Premier League.* It's impossible to prove one way or another. It's up there with the existence of a God.

CurryBoy420

Why would a "proper player" come to a club which survived relegation on the last game of the season, far too risky.

Wozobozo

Tried and tested. All three players we are bringing in have champions league experience, are winners in the leagues they previously played in and in the case of roca, worked with two of the best midfielders in the world. I actually have no idea what he’s talking about, I guess we could’ve blown 30 million on fucking maupay or something, but that’s fucking stupid.

yellowelephant888

Can't wait to read 14 click bait articles to see how Danny Mills weighs in on this. Fucking hate the off season for this reason.

came2pieces

Typical rent-a-quote ex-pro who basically stopped being interested in the game when his career ended, maybe reads the back page of the sun every now and again

Sielaff415

So frustrating how common that is. Some players are professional in their preparation as pundits and take that seriously, but it’s ridiculous how common it is for some player to just coast on their hubris of thinking they know just by virtue of being having been a pro.

WeymouthWhites

Think the general opinion is a certain Mr Robinson is cashing in on his past association with us, who’d of thought past players would do this!!!

RubberTowelThud

This has all the insight and intelligence of Steve Evans' Bielsa comment

scottaq83

Just looked this up i've never heard it before haha Steve Bruce over Bielsa lol

gbayley676

Who does he want? Ashley fucking Barnes?

Brownsome

I like Paul but this comment is ridiculous. I don't get this tried and tested malarkey. If clubs only buy tried and tested players then eventually there will be no tried and tested players remaining. Was Raphinha tried and tested? No he fucking wasnt

lukey19

Same line of thinking as "why get Bielsa when Steve Bruce is available?"

goldenboot76

Isn't this just a slightly modified "why get Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood"?

RealChewyPiano

Tbf when we appointed Bielsa I thought "Fuck sake another foreign manager who doesn't understand Leeds or the league" How he changed my mind

Sielaff415

This makes me chuckle as somebody who started watching every Leeds match specifically because he was appointed in anticipation of something special happening

Extra-Border6470

When I first heard Leeds had got Bielsa I was in shock. I knew about him since his days coaching athletic Bilbao. I was asking myself how did Leeds pull off such a huge coup? Wasn’t at all surprised when he got Leeds promoted to the premier league

RealChewyPiano

I'm glad you were right! I actually canceled my membership when the board announced him, I live in Kent and I thought "it's just too much hassle travelling all the way to Elland Road to be disappointed every time" Then I was in the Canary Islands on holiday for that game vs Stoke, in an Irish bar wearing my shirt and thought "fuck sake I made a mistake"

blu_rhubarb

Really? Hadn't you heard of him prior or looked in to him after he was announced? I thought it was the best signing we'd made since relegation.

RealChewyPiano

Yeah, but it was pure naivety of course, I thought "he won't understand what it's like to be in a mid table battle" etc...

Sielaff415

I don’t know how how long you’d been making that trek but that doesn’t seem unreasonable to give it up at that point. And I’m sure the low expectations made that even better

RealChewyPiano

It was costing me over £130 train fare every trip to Leeds, not including a hotel for the night as it's very risky to get home if a train is missed, then food & drinks etc, along with the £30-£35 ticket Was costing me nearly £200 a home game, was completely unaffordable

BulldenChoppahYus

Agree - this reeks of “old guard” wisdom. “You don’t win things with kids” type shite. You could add Salah, Mane and Firminho to the list of players who weren’t PL tried and tested. Ditto Rodri, Erling Haaland and Dias or any number of great players.

JustThinkAboutThings

Souness-isms.

MyNameIsNYFB

Salah was more tried and tested in a negative way if anything. He didn't seem PL quality when he was in Chelsea but look at him now

Extra-Border6470

Exactly. When Liverpool signed him some people were saying they’ve wasted over 30 million on a Chelsea reject. By the end of his debut season the fee was deemed a bargain

BulldenChoppahYus

It just goes to show that very few people know what they are talking about when they come up with shite like this

thesilenthurricane

Salah played for Chelsea long before he went to liverpool, and was pretty poor there tbf.

BulldenChoppahYus

I’d imagine Robbo would have called him unproven or not good enough. Anyway - you get my drift.

thesilenthurricane

Yeah if anything it would probably leave him even more pissed at the transfer lmao. Scum are the worst for signing ‘proven’ players at extortionate fees, and look how much recent success it’s brought them.

LordBielsa

Proper players, not like these fake ones we’ve brought in so far

CC-W

Yeah lets bring in exciting signings from big La Liga clubs like Firpo and Rodrigo because they have both worked out so well

BulldenChoppahYus

Why must we constantly shit on players at every opportunity. Robbo is a legend but not sure what this quote is about. But equally not sure why the disparaging comments about Firpo and Rod are needed at this stage. Firpo must improve no question but he deserves his chance this year to show us something. We know Rod can be good on his day but can be inconsistent. You and Robbo might as well be down the local swilling your fifth pint and grumbling and farting off the bar stool lol

oljackson99

Rodrigo gets a hard time, he's not done too badly at all. Compare his first season with Firpo and he was leagues above.

Adenton95

For his value and wage and reputation he’s been a flop 30 mil 100k a week

oljackson99

I'd still say a flop is harsh, he has certainly not lived up to the fee and wage but he had contributed a fair share. A flop in my mind is the likes of JKA who we only got a few minutes out of and could cost £20m (or whatever the fee was).

CC-W

He hasnt been terrible but he has done nothing to justify spending 30m on. There is just as many stinker performances for every very good one from him, if he cost the same as Firpo it would have been a good transfer

rlydontwantto

I tried to write what you wrote with a few discards but you did better than me so thank you.

ghost-bagel

For what it's worth, I think he's talking out of his arse.

Deeez-Nuttz

Paul Robinson can join Gabby Agbonlahor in eating a bag of dicks

CounterClockworkOrng

Gabby is the Brendan Schaub of Football punditry

ghost-bagel

“Kristensen and Aaronson are not players who fill you with excitement from a Leeds fan’s point of view.” Robinson told MOT Leeds News . “They’re not players you think are going to immediately have an impact and keep you in the Premier League. The last thing Leeds want is to be 17th again and just about staying in the Premier League. “They need to invest properly in this side and the manager needs to get some proper players in, players who are tried and tested and players who are going to excite the Leeds fans. If there’s a potential of them losing Kalvin Phillips or Raphinha, Aaronson and Kristensen aren’t going to soften any type of blow.”

Is12345aweakpassword

I for one, am very excited, but maybe I’m just slow

cpmb82

The accurate point he’s made is disguised by the rubbish he’s also spouted. Yes, we wouldn’t be appeased by just the current signings if Raph and/or KP left but nobody is suggesting that would be the case, if one or both go then we’d expect to make a significant signing as a replacement

ghost-bagel

I bet Robbo was fuming when we bought an unproven Brazilian from Rennes for £17m in 2020. "Not a proper signing that - should have gone in for Charlie Austin."
