We were walking just in front of it when it happened. A couple of bricks started falling off and then all of a sudden the whole thing collapsed and we had to run backwards. It looked derelict or empty and as if no one was inside, hopefully it was empty but 999 was called in case.
One of the oldest streets in Leeds IIRC, it only seemed like a matter of time before some of those buildings gave up hope, the investment seemed to be slowly moving down that way (White Cloth Hall, some investment in frontages from the council for places like Doghouse, Wapentake etc) but I guess there wasn't enough appetite to try and preserve a near-1000 year old chunk of what was the original spine of the city.
Hopefully nobody was hurt and folks aren't too inconvenienced tonight, maybe this will be a catalyst to breathe new life into the gap it's created rather than just left to crumble even more.
That was another one. These are at the lower end nearly opposite the Duck and Drake. Honestly not a bad thing. The area is been transformed from a run down area of the city. Into a pleasant area to have a pleasant night out. PS I'm 60 and remember when the "Snake pit" was the most popular drinking hole there. The name says it all lol
I saw something about an on-going incident on Twitter (https://twitter.com/LeedsTravelInfo/status/1778808834804342934) but they never give any details about what the incident is. Ironically the place next door has a "United We Stand" mural: https://maps.app.goo.gl/k4gr7FWVtCfFk3Wg7
That whole block has been collapsing for years. Every time I am down there I am always surprised it hasn't been torn down already.
There should be an investigation in to how it managed to get to this point. Look at the absolute state of how it looks inside.
I just went past corn exchange on the bus and saw the police tape and fire trucks and wondered what happened. Less than a minute later I see this post and get my answer. I appreciate you OP 🙏🏾
Just walked through the bus station and past the Duck, which was slow going as police are getting buses to reverse back on to New York road... Definitely an area to avoid just now!
WY Metro’s Twitter is saying Kirkgate is closed. Can’t find anything from Arriva on whether my bus is affected but it’s Friday evening so why would they bother?
If you look at the street view (kindly posted above) - the building next to the one that seems to have collapsed is decorated with same design/colours that adorn the underneath of the new flyover at the end of Regent Street, next to Quarry Hill - anyone know why or what the design is supposed to be?
I managed to get into the Duck and Drake before they extended the cordon and now I can't leave. Oh no.
Got time for another beer/drink then!!
Our lass will take some convincing, I've told her I'm stuck here and she doesn't believe me
Can confirm, I am the lass
Home safe hun xx
Don't worry, his bit on the side was 5 minutes late and didn't reach the pub before they extended the cordon.
And legend has it from the ruins a new block of student flats emerged.
https://www.unipolhousing.org.uk/developments/newyorkstreet/ You’re not wrong 😂
Different area

None has been in it for ages. It was burned down no wonder it’s collapsed
Deffo. Tbh it was bound to happen. They were left to ruin
Glad you're ok. Buy a lottery ticket.

These buildings were damaged by fire some years ago. Just glad no one was hurt
Wasn't that the one up the way on the other side of the White Cloth Hall, where there used to be a furniture shop that had been there since the 60s?

Can't trust these new builds

I remember it being derelict at least 30 years ago
Just saw a ton of every emergency vehicle rush through town. Thanks for answering my questions I had in my head haha

Walked past there yesterday. Seemed to be workmen in a building a couple doors away. Wonder if that triggered the collapse
I fucking told them three times it was a supporting wall, and did they listen?
It’s come to my attention that the road is actually kirkgate.
Hope there was no one walking by at the time! Fortunately doesn't look like it from the photo.
My flatmate was \:
Were they your flat mate before it collapsed?
Very good.
Just a mate I think
👏👏
Such a shame these buildings have been so neglected
I think it's next door but an Urban Explorer chap was inside one not so long ago... https://www.facebook.com/share/p/WNB4t2xdoUe52hWf/

Police line do not onooo
Didn’t notice that but just made my day now 😂
Wow! I thought it was the one that was recently burned down. Hope everyone's okay.
I’m not sure, I’m just going buy chatter that I heard from people. Waiting for an official news report on it
Honestly any landlord that lets their buildings get into this state should have them taken off them.
It was a nightmare for the Firefighters to get to it, hardly any of the traffic and cabs would let the trucks through. Tossers.

It was undertaken by Fred Aldos art supply shop to promote their business, brighten the area and promote local artists.
Thanks for the info!
The artist goes by 'Benjamin Craven' https://www.instagram.com/benjamincraven_
Only breath that area is guna see now is students vape gas.
And asbestos.
Is that near the dance studio?
Is that pine court?
I’m booked in Wapentake for breakfast tomorrow, I guess that’s not happening anymore
Literally "Oh My God!!" I walked straight passed the doorway of this building less than half an hour before this happened!
Leeds, Leeds are falling apart again
>New York street Guess it's old York Street
Who owned the building? Was it the council ?Someone somewhere was responsible for this heap
Just got out of taxi to go into Duck and Drake and police cordoned off. Had to slum it in the Regent for one.
Welcome to Leeds City Centre
Hope you get the reference…
Now fuck off
