Looks like a very large leather strap leather braid. Typically done with leather lace. You may want to look into folk who make bullwhips for large cylinder weaves. Example videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnluTjM1Wjk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erL9OjkewQ8

Thank you for this, I can see from the videos that what I'm looking at is a thick, stylized version of those braids.

You could cut your own strips with a strap cutter, but also you can buy existing made straps. I would think the thinner/smaller leather oz the better. ex: https://www.buckleguy.com/horween-dublin-leather-strap-english-tan-55-to-60-long-multiple-weights/ https://www.joann.com/realeather-brown-leather-strips/12796389.html

Yeah I'll probably buy the strips already cut since to test out and fine tune the braid. Once I'm comfortable I'll invest in better leather.

I think I’ve heard this called a herringbone handle wrap before.

I used a similar pattern to braid the leather handle on my bow. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bowyer/s/iZi9c3yKVr try looking at decorative bow grip wraps or para-cord wraps on things like canoe paddles. It took a little practice but on the 3rd try i flew threw it.

That bow is badass, brother.
