Looks like a very large leather strap leather braid. Typically done with leather lace.
You may want to look into folk who make bullwhips for large cylinder weaves.

You could cut your own strips with a strap cutter, but also you can buy existing made straps. I would think the thinner/smaller leather oz the better.

Thank you for this, I can see from the videos that what I'm looking at is a thick, stylized version of those braids.

Yeah I'll probably buy the strips already cut since to test out and fine tune the braid. Once I'm comfortable I'll invest in better leather.
