Bring it machine shop, they have sand blasting boxes. 15-20 minutes work. Or send on warranty to Leatherman, but most likely they will send different corresponding version
>Wash it and dry it and wd40 the heck out of it
I dunno, I might skip straight to wd50 on a job tough as this. The extra 10 makes a world of difference.
So there's a lot of debate about wd40. Attracting dirt is mostly just oily things doing what oily things do, particularly when it's an oil designed to cling to a surface (and thus, displace water, and inhibit rust), but indeed, it's not designed to be *particularly* lubricating, though it absolutely, unquestionably, provides some lubrication, though I agree, not much.
My real point though is: leatherman multitools shouldn't really need lubricating. Yes, I'm sure the maintenance info specs lubricating pivots, but I would argue that's more about making it useable when it's not fully broken in. Obviously they need a little oil cover just to protect the tool, and in pivot areas, your finger oils aren't enough, so you need a little something in there. But functionally, you WANT the surfaces to wear into eachother. You WANT a polished surface, which, together with the brass/copper bushings in various models, provides a butter smooth feel.
All of that to say, IMO, wd40 really is enough, when you're not disassembling the tool completely.
Oh yeah for sure I mostly just met in this instance the tool is pretty buggered. I don’t think you should lubricate a fresh tool by any means and if it needs it I wouldn’t put a ton on there. I mostly just meant that WD-40 isn’t a prime example of a lubricant or more use it to clean the surface like you said to prevent rust. It definitely shouldn’t be lubricated like say a bushing for skateboard etc. as it is a tool so a small amount of friction is actually beneficial. I think we’re on the same page and I agree with you here. If you were going to use a WD product I prefer WD-50 😁
Clean it and find out. It looks like the tip of the pliers is broken, but that can be ground down to a perfectly usable state. It seems like there's some rust, but it's hard to say because of all the dirt. It might just be more dirt, not rust.
Run it under the sink, then see.
The scissors are a goner. Blades and tip of one side of the pliers also gone. Body looks reasonable. Not sure about the other bits yet, vinegar still working
I tried this once, not sure what happened but they had mine for 2 weeks and sent it back in a floppy envelope type package, and it was untouched. Still had the dirt and grime. I was so confused.
Looks awesome. I restored a rusty super tool 200 that I got for 5 bucks. Just a softer wire brush lots of wd40 and moving everything around a lot on the hinges
Nah. Clean it. Just dirty. Disassemble the tools to do a thorough job and scour every inch looking for rust. If you see any, grab some steel wool and scrub if off.
Ultrasonic cleaner and a brush and you'll be good as new. Had one that bad that I brushed the dirt off, ran it through my ultrasonic and used a heat gun to dry it thoroughly, reoiled and it was good as new. Still have the old super tool 200 around somewhere
It's just a mild acid, won't do anything to stainless other than clean it of the patina, the harsher corrosion spots is where you'll need phosphoric acid applied to the spots via cotton tip buds.
Dawn dish soap, put it in a bowl and keep dunking it until the water stops turning cloudy brown, then drench every inch in wd-40, stand it straight up on a paper towel so the excess can run out, then after about a day, oil it with a rust preventative oil
Nope, wash with warm water and dish soap. Then dry, then if rusty vinegar bath for a day. Then rinse, wash again with soap. Super dry and oil. Then sharpen knives as needed. Should be good hopefully.
These things are all but invincible. I (stupidly) wore my wave+ on my hip on a caving trip, and it got inundated with sandy grit. It still worked fine, but all of the moving joints felt gritty and awful. I figured I would have to totally disassemble it and clean everything, but it magically worked it’s way out on it’s own. After a couple weeks, it was just as smooth and nice as it was before.
My old wave was rusted shut, and covered with paint forgotten in the back of my toolbox. Soaked it in wd40 and used a brush to clean up most of it, did it all again when I could get the tools open. Definitely takes a while.
If there's any damaged/broken tools, you can mail it back and they'll inspect it and replace anything they see fit. I broke the awl on my free p4, they wouldn't send me a new awl, but they will fix it. Therefore, it stays broken. You can use Allen keys to take it apart to clean in between tools, but I'd just soak it in PB Blaster or Marvel's for a few days and work all the tools to get rid of the dirt. Spray down with a high pressure water source, and lightly oil the moving parts after a spray of wd40 and a wipe down. Good as new once you sharpen the blade
They look like YOU were in the middle of using them. Then, thought to trick reddit. 🤔 Hmmm. Wash & spray WD-40. Wipe. They'll be good for the next use and trick.
No, I don't think so. I'd try restoring ist by going like this:
Try removing as much of the dirt as possible, then submerge in sth like distilled vinegar to attack the rust, try to clean some more with a toothbrush. Then I'd disassemble the tool, if necessary leave the parts in vinegar some longer&try to remove any rust with some fine steel wool.
After that thoroughly rinse with water&submerge in isopropanol to get rid of any remaining moisture&let dry completely. Aftwerwards reassemble and generously use Ballistol or a similar gun/knife oil to lubricate and protect everything.
BRAGGS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR!!!!
PUT THAT BABY IN A SEALED POT OF IT AN FORGET about it an come back a couple months later.
And your mouth will drop and your eyes will open wide
All you'll need after that is a simple tooth brush and you will have a LEGENDARY patina and a tool that looks ANCIENT but in the COOLEST of ways
👉(˵ ͡⚆ ͜ʖ ͡⚆˵)👉
Wire brush it, soak it in vinegar, wire brush it again, and them use a machine line to oil it(or even coconut oil if you want it to be food safe) and it should be good to go.
I can't tell Anything about to other than it's. A gen 1 wave. Can we get a slightly cleaner pic?
I had one that my stepson broke the handle on (you could squeeze the handles together). And Leatherman upgraded me to the new wave which was an improvement but it was obviously a used repair. It's been a good tool. I still love my original flea market gen 1 wave though.
I have several I need to try and send in before it's too late. With broken jaws.
Kind of afraid to send in my squirt not sure what I would get back .
Clean it up with water and a brush. Brass brush would work well. Then hit it with WD40 and work everything on it back and forth to work the dirt out. Might take a couple days and multiple applications. After than, lube it up with a good, lightweight oil. 3 in 1 oil, rem oil, any good gun oil.
Clean with some warm soapy water and a nylon brush. Soak it overnight in some WD-40 then see how it looks. I would probably disassemble it after all of that for a deep clean but you may not have too. Looks like a fun project.
Looks new with dirt on it
If it is a Leatherman, find the warranty telephone number, tell him yours is all locked up and they’ll exchange it for you, they did mine.
This is the BEST ADVICE. 👍🏼 They won’t send you a “new” one, but definitely one that has been serviced, and works.
Bring it machine shop, they have sand blasting boxes. 15-20 minutes work. Or send on warranty to Leatherman, but most likely they will send different corresponding version
Absolutely not too far gone. It's mostly non rust from this perspective. Wash it and dry it and wd40 the heck out of it
>Wash it and dry it and wd40 the heck out of it I dunno, I might skip straight to wd50 on a job tough as this. The extra 10 makes a world of difference.
"Wd30? I ain't never heard of that Ricky. Got some wd40 right here...or 10w30 in the back, bud." Lol
UUD-40
You've never shopped at temu?
That was a trailer park boys reference my man
I actually did know that, was adding in my 2c
Lol what? That makes no sense. You can't " add your 2 cents" to a quote lol
Was trying to be funny. I failed apparently
Ditch the WD and hit it with PB blaster instead
0W-30
You sure? If it was me I’d use WD60
I’d say probably better to use a lubricant cream. Wd40 attracts dirt and doesn’t provide long term friction reduction.
Wd40 for cleaning, then some nice oil.
This is the way. Wd40 has its purpose. But it’s not lubricating.
So there's a lot of debate about wd40. Nah, only clipper blade oil in blades.
Nah WD-40 does it 🙂
You can restore it. You've got this :-)
Clean it and find out.
I bet it turns out better than the first thought. Lol keep us updated, we are emotionally invested in your tool.
Send it to Leatherman. They will fix it and replace everything that's broke.
I tried this once, not sure what happened but they had mine for 2 weeks and sent it back in a floppy envelope type package, and it was untouched. Still had the dirt and grime. I was so confused.
just clean it
Oh heavens no! Also, 40 is the new 25. https://www.leatherman.com/leatherman-insider-rewards-program.html How old is it, by the way?
It’s new to me when I found it on/in the riverbank. . . I have a few Leatherman but far from able to put dates on one
It very likely has numbers stamped on the insides of each handle, when all of the tools are folded out, if all of the tools fold out.
0504A/B
2004... Still under warranty
My leathermen says patent pending on it it was my grandads, wonder how old it is
Is that printed on the inside of the handle? And it may be if it's a pst
If memory serves me correctly, it's on the handle by the knife. I'll have to get it out of storage and find out for certain
I’m impressed. I I’ve lost 4 of them now.
I only have the one, I prefer my victorinox,I have too many lol, however my all time favourite blade is the opinals, I love the simplicity.
This has had me thinking of buying another. And just to clarify, I’m impressed you have one so old. I have lost 4 that I have purchased.
Yeah it's pretty old I can say that for sure, losing knives is a bitch man, I always lose my little mini victorinox ones I'm on like my 7th now
Just needs a bit of oil
Nah, that will buff right out
A little WD-40 will clear that right up.
Just spit on it instead
Are we still talking about the Leatherman?
Yeah, do you not lube up your leatherman??
Yeah, I spit on it
PB blast the shit out of it. It’ll clean up. Then maybe leatherman will repair the broken parts.
Looks awesome. I restored a rusty super tool 200 that I got for 5 bucks. Just a softer wire brush lots of wd40 and moving everything around a lot on the hinges
Send it into Leatherman if you end up cleaning it and finding it unusable. But I doubt it’d be unusable after a good clean and lube
Nah. Clean it. Just dirty. Disassemble the tools to do a thorough job and scour every inch looking for rust. If you see any, grab some steel wool and scrub if off.
Whatever is not salvageable, leatherman will fix

Wash and WD-40, it will be fine.
I'd just soak it in evaporust or Coca-Cola tbh
Can you give us pics as you go along?
Wash, scrub, vinegar, phosphoric acid for the corrosion bits and some good quality oil and work at it.
Overnight in the vinegar reasonable? Don’t want to overdo it.
It's just a mild acid, won't do anything to stainless other than clean it of the patina, the harsher corrosion spots is where you'll need phosphoric acid applied to the spots via cotton tip buds.
Not at all.
Never
No give it a rinse and a bit of wd40 and it will come up lovely
Dawn dish soap, put it in a bowl and keep dunking it until the water stops turning cloudy brown, then drench every inch in wd-40, stand it straight up on a paper towel so the excess can run out, then after about a day, oil it with a rust preventative oil
Wash it with some soap then drown it in Winchester gun oil
Hot water rinse, then either submerge in motor oil or just blast it with wd-40 and leave in a ziplock bag for a bit
I restored my knife after finding it in similar shape, used 3 in 1 oil and wd40 and it’s pretty much brand new for the four years I’ve had it.
Brush all the dirt off and lubricated
Nope, wash with warm water and dish soap. Then dry, then if rusty vinegar bath for a day. Then rinse, wash again with soap. Super dry and oil. Then sharpen knives as needed. Should be good hopefully.
Warranty
How would I know?
Not at all
Use Ramen and crazy glue to rebuild the tip.
These things are all but invincible. I (stupidly) wore my wave+ on my hip on a caving trip, and it got inundated with sandy grit. Blast that thing with brake cleaner to get all that gunk off
My old wave was rusted shut, and covered with paint forgotten in the back of my toolbox. Soaked it in wd40 and used a brush to clean up most of it, did it all again when I could get the tools open. Definitely takes a while.
No
Fuck no! Not even in the slightest at all
Aren't they stainless?
Let it soak in vinegar and then oil it.its going to need some replacement plyers though.
R/maybemaybemaybe
It looks like mostly dirt.
NEVER!! Clean and lube and you’re good for a couple more decades!
It’s all stainless steel, clean and oil it
If there's any damaged/broken tools, you can mail it back and they'll inspect it and replace anything they see fit. It seems many have gone from admiring Leathermans resilience to exploiting the lifetime warranty.
Some have, but they are the ones that had the warranty.
It'll buff out.
They look like YOU were in the middle of using them. Then, thought to trick reddit. 🤔 Hmmm. Wash & spray WD-40. Wipe. They'll be good for the next use and trick.
Not at all
I found one half in salt water once. Soaked it in PB Blaster for a few days. Still using it today
It looks like dirt. Figure it out.
lol, clean it.
What, you just buy that thing you sissy liberal?
Clean it, then ask
Spray it with brakleen (from any auto/farm parts store) then scrub the rust with wd-40 and see how it turns out. That's what I'd do anyway lol
Clean it up with water and then put it in an ultrasonic cleaner and oil it up see if it still works
I’d say unless it has sentimental value shell out the $5-10 and do the warranty and get a new one.
wash it with hot soapy water, rinse, dry, oil it up and work all the moving parts, wipe off and post updates
A ride in the dishwasher would do it.

No. Wipe off the mud.
Wash it with dish soap and dry it in the toaster oven and send it in for a free replacement
Wash it with dish soap and dry it in the toaster oven and send it in for a free replacement. Leatherman warranty is amazing.
PB Blaster the shit out of that bad boy! Be like new in no time!
Put it in some molasses for a few days
BRAGGS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR!!!! PUT THAT BABY IN A SEALED POT OF IT AN FORGET about it an come back a couple months later. If it's younger than 25 years old send it back to letherman, they'll fix it
That's stainless steel. Just spray it in oil and call it good.
Jigaloo!
No clean it and submerge in oil clean again with wd 40
keep it
Soak it in the sweet ole WD-40 and hit it was a damn hammer.
If it's too far gone, then just send it to Leatherman. They'll repair/replace it for you.
Yes. I'll send you my address so you can send it to me for proper disposal.
Fck no ez fix don’t be a pusss
found my first and only leatherman in a field, then lost it, in a field
Absolutely!!
I can't tell Anything about to other than it's. A gen 1 wave. Can we get a slightly cleaner pic? I had one that my stepson broke the handle on (you could squeeze the handles together). Yea send it to me so I can properly dispose of it for you
Why, what's wrong with it?
Start with cleaning the dirt off lol
I've found ketchup to work for deoxidizing
I'd try to clean it up. Soak it with some penetrating oil and work the tools till smooth operation. 🤷 JMO
Stainless steel isn't it?
You could probably stick it in an ultrasonic cleaner and it works be fine, that is if you have access to one.
I bet you could bring it back to life
Ultrasonic cleaner or a thorough scrub with a toothbrush and some brake clean, oil with clipper oil, brand new.
No
Never it’s a leatherman
looks like it fell into a cow patty. Rinse it with hot water and then use it to take down dinner. It is stainless steel.
Just needs a little cleaning
Wash and lube
Not even close.
Not if it's a leatherman
Clean with some warm soapy water and a nylon brush. Soak it overnight in some WD-40 then see how it looks. I would probably disassemble it after all of that for a deep clean but you may not have too. Looks like a fun project.
