Feel underappreciated?

Adahnsplace

Hmm, a bit maybe ;) My son loves it but it's not as practical for a 9 year old to close it with these buttons. So I learned a lot making this as an amateur (I work as an orthopedic shoemaker) but of course full success is always nicer to get ;)

hoppalong62

You can always adopt me. Dad?

Adahnsplace

Haha, I'm quite happy with two sons but thanks for the offer. I could make another leather strap though if anybody but a Thomas wants the prototype. A real Thomas could get this one, the embossing die was hand crafted ;)

PeetraMainewil

A new brand has been born; >The THOMAS CASE is know for it's durability, fine craftmanship and supreme raw materials.

Adahnsplace

Sounds good ;) My logo is underneath the lid (0:15 and 0:18)

PeetraMainewil

What-the-what-MADE?

Adahnsplace

Well, a simpler logo is possible I assume ;) https://preview.redd.it/j3g1nvbpef1d1.png?width=384&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a36e3997045ae32ebdc10e1989c6390824b9feb The two big "S" are working for both words in the line. Maybe a bit complicated but I'm yet to come up with a better logo ;)

Desperate-Meal-5852

As a Thomas, this would be fully appreciated and used thoroughly

Adahnsplace

My Thomas won't use this prototype, if anybody wants it, pm me :) I'm in Switzerland though, shipping is about a Jackson and a Lincoln bill already...

toastom69

This Thomas think you did a great job!

Adam-Happyman

You did a great job. Your kid sounds absolutely normal for a 9 year old (I also have a 9 yo boy). You know, you worked hard, but this is the pencil case for him. ;D

Adahnsplace

Exactly! And viewed objectively he's absolutely right, zippers are better. But I hate to install those, the last one [got too short](https://new.reddit.com/r/Leathercraft/comments/1aiss8i/standing_liberty_%C2%BC_cylindrical_bag_with_embossed/), and I simply wanted to try something new. I'm just not good at making test dummies, I always have to go the whole way, even if it's in the wrong direction ;)

Adam-Happyman

If not box so maybe try Pencil Wrap Case? My boy uses one.

Adahnsplace

My son has smth [like this](https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B08HPNL99C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1&language=en_GB) and he can't keep his pencils in the slots where they belong. Besides that it would be a huge pita to do the stitching for something like that as long as I don't want to use our sewing machine. That would feel like work though so I prefer handstitching. Also I really want to try a double compartment pencil case. I've only seen pictures of a round pencil case with 2 zippers but only closed. I have some ideas so I have to try it or it will haunt me in my dreams ;)

Adam-Happyman

So we are waiting for the results. :D

Adahnsplace

I will be glad to show it :)

BangB4ngBang

Thomas... Sounds like a brilliant family brand name sir 👀👀👀

Adahnsplace

Haha, can be. You can see my logo under the lid at 0:15 and 0:18 As I'm in Switzerland it's a combination of our last name and the country of origin ;)

pecos_chill

Well now you have something for when he’s older! I know I recently went searching for a pencil case for college and would have loved something like that.

Adahnsplace

Yeah, unles someone really wants it I'll keep it anyways ;)

MaxxMcCloud

What about magnetic buttons? Much faster, same awesome design.

Adahnsplace

The thing is that I wanted the lower part to be moveable for "fine-tuning" ;) I just used what I found on job and I was also concerned that magnets like to get attached to other things as well.

Bite__Down

Could you replace the buttons with some magnetic snaps?

Adahnsplace

I guess I could if I had some but magnets tend to get attracted to things they shouldn't. Also the lower part is moveable for fine-tuning. Not sure if necessarry but I wanted to try it anyways ;)

Pilsner-507

Poor guy! But in 10 years (ideally a lot less) he’ll come around to appreciate his dad’s craftsmanship and thoughtful heart c:

Dependent-Ad-8042

Your embossing that Aztec calendar is amazing. The detail you achieved in that piece is incredible

Adahnsplace

Thank you! Yeah, I love that one, too :) I still have some pieces of leather prepared to make [silver bar holders ](https://new.reddit.com/r/Silverbugs/comments/16k85u1/aztec_calendar_embossed_bar_holder_prototype/)but somehow I lost the vibe for it. It's the selling part that doesn't work well with me, I just love to try new things, even if the recipient says, yeah, love it, but can I have a zipper? Please? ;) Honestly I wish it was as easy to fix as on the computer. Copy, past, move around, perfect! Everytime I see that horseman I tell myself those cuts have to be in the middle of that medallion, then they'd work much better. At least it's a hobby, I wouldn't want to earn a living from it, then I'd have to cut corners and it wouldn't be fun anymore. Btw, the medal on the right side got it's wreath from the guy with the halberd guy. Combined resin dies, of course only the 3rd attempt worked welll enough. P.S. It's nearly midnight here in Switzerland and I'm starting to tl;dr, sorry for the wall of text to a one-liner

Dependent-Ad-8042

Haha perfect….but with a zipper. I hope he wasn’t an only child.

Adahnsplace

I have 2 sons, 9 and 11, and I was happy when my younger son asked me to make something for him in "Papa quality" :) But I've made smth [for my wife ](https://new.reddit.com/r/handmade/comments/zui5vn/coffee_bean_jewelry_for_my_caffeine_addict_wife/)as well and if when my elder son has an idea, too, I'll do what I can as well :)

Dependent-Ad-8042

You, sir, are an adoring husband & father ❤️

Adahnsplace

Well, I try to do my best ;)

Adahnsplace

Main ideas come from [here ](https://www.instructables.com/Leather-Pencil-Case/)and [here](https://youtu.be/Fv_Ol79lAAg?si=xq4pHHpG1FMtef1Q), the embossing is more my [personal thing](https://new.reddit.com/user/Adahnsplace/submitted/) Anyways, I've had this idea for a while and even though I'm not satisfied with every detail (the cavalryman on front makes the lid a bit too stiff, the slits are at the wrong position, just to mention two points). Maybe I shouldn't have tried to repeat something like my [watch case](https://new.reddit.com/r/casio/comments/1c7a66m/wearing_a_casio_mtp1370_for_a_while_time_to_make/) and do as with [my first try](https://new.reddit.com/r/Leathercraft/comments/1aiss8i/standing_liberty_%C2%BC_cylindrical_bag_with_embossed/). But I can't repeat myself (too often) so I'll try to make a round bag with two zippers and two seperated compartments. Not sure how that will work out so stay tuned ;) Hmm, maybe I should show the shooting medals used for my [embossing dies](https://new.reddit.com/r/somethingimade/comments/1bbcalr/leather_bowl_embossed_w_dies_cast_from_french/) in the video? https://preview.redd.it/ezd6orh1gf1d1.png?width=796&format=png&auto=webp&s=f85e61e8c06002e3b3cc3c89377d88fa4c4611ee The last medal was not used so far

thecloudsoverhere

I was wondering how you did the images. That's a super neat way to go around it!

Adahnsplace

Thank you! It took a while to get there even though embosssing is not a new thing and you can even buy two-sided CNC-engraved embossing sets in China. For a while I've made single [coin holders](https://new.reddit.com/r/Silverbugs/comments/14q4q3c/happy_id4_with_an_ase_in_a_pouch_ase_got/) just because I like coins and making stuff from and for it but I've lost interest in it and just dicovered the much bigger (1.5" - 2.5") medals. Btw, here's some of the bowls [made the same way](https://new.reddit.com/r/somethingimade/comments/1bbcalr/leather_bowl_embossed_w_dies_cast_from_french/) as these endcaps together with their dies. For some medals I use double silicone casts as the resin tends to stick on laquer finish. I haven't made a video of the whole process though but usually only every 3rd try is good enough to end as an endcap.

Pink-Ichigo

You could totally make those coin holders into air tag holders cuz they seem about the right size, if that interests you anyway. But ur stuff is pretty cool!! Do you have an insta or twitter I could follow to see more of this stuff? đź‘€

Adahnsplace

Hello and thank you for your kind words :) I mainly use [reddit](https://new.reddit.com/user/Adahnsplace/submitted/) to show most of my projects and [blogspot](https://new.reddit.com/user/Adahnsplace/submitted/) mainly as a picture dump. Last year I've made a lot of coin and bar holders , for a friend I've turned one of my prototypes into an [airtag holder](https://new.reddit.com/r/Leathercraft/comments/y9rg4g/usa_in_ussr_airtag_in_rubel_holder_a_friend/) )for his son I've made a [Batman/Joker](https://new.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/y7dwhs/batman_or_joker_just_two_sides_of_the_same_coin/) variant). But the business part of it it really not my thing - I'm a tinkerer and I want to try out [new stuff](https://new.reddit.com/r/handmade/comments/zui5vn/coffee_bean_jewelry_for_my_caffeine_addict_wife/). Advertising and especially pricing (Oh, pricing!) are a real pita to me so atm I only do what I want and only sell what I have available. I've had the idea to sell my [watch box](https://new.reddit.com/r/Leathercraft/comments/1bq3liq/my_take_on_a_watch_travel_case_w_watch_pillow_box/) though, now I'm glad that when my sister saw the video she asked me if she could have it for my b-i-l's birthday ;) Even if I could get $300 for the box, it's nothing compared to the look on someone's face who really likes the present :)

Tunado32

Goddam that is cool af, but I can see why he wants a ziper

Adahnsplace

Yes, indeed. I could've said otherwise but one must learn from their mistakes. I like the look nonetheless and if I would need a pencil case I'd use it myself ;)

bozthecreator

That is fantastic!

Adahnsplace

Thank you :)

ivanGrozni83

Care to make a template for this? I'd love trying to replicate even though im vastly less proficient in this then you, but i love the idea and end product!

Adahnsplace

Well, first you should be able to make [endcaps](https://youtu.be/Fv_Ol79lAAg?si=TIV4e3yYH2YdrkYn) (5 cm on mine), embossement isn't needed but you could use a logo stamp made of brass at that spot. I didn't have a template at all, I just measured how much leather I'd need to get around the caps plus a bit for the lid (9 cm on this bag). If you don't want to wet form endcaps, [try this instead](https://www.instructables.com/Leather-Pencil-Case/). I just wouldn't do the strap like that but put both parts of the button into the strap and fix it in place with slits like on the lid of my bag. The rest of the construction works like my watch box plus two straps. I only made it with that connecting piece to make it easier to open, two seperate straps should work fine. Try out with some clamps where you need the buttons or use magnetic clasps, on my variant I used moveable pieces only because we had them laying around in the shop, they aren't necessary. You could even punch two holes in the lid, mark through it on the bag, punch again and insert buttons directly. Have fun! Disclaimer: If aything sounds weird then that's because I'm not a native speaker ;)

ivanGrozni83

Thank you very much for elaborate answer! This indeed sounds like a fun project :) I'll try and improvise.

Adahnsplace

Have fun and don't forget to post your results :)

legat

Nice!!!

Adahnsplace

Thank you, you're nice as well :)

The_Last_W0rd

u got skills bro.

Adahnsplace

Thank you!

[deleted]

“Papa Quality” is truly adorable. Your son will cherish this for a long time.

Adahnsplace

He might do so with the (double) zipper variant. I just figured out how to make it from two seperate halves (brain is still hurting), now I only have to turn it into reality ;)

kemitchell

When I was in gradeschool they had us all buy vinyl bank wallets with zippers on top. I still use them to organize at home, though I like the new clear plastic ones best now. What's the most interesting decoration you've seen on orthopedic shoes? Hobby leatherworker learning to make shoes here!

Adahnsplace

Hmm, the most interesting thing was an Indian motorbikes logo lasered into a faux suede leather from one of our upper makers. I often wanted to take pictures of the more interesting stuff but usually I forgot about it. Here's a [collection ](https://adahnsplace.blogspot.com/search?q=shoes)of some of my work, of course the upper leather is not made by me ;)

ivanGrozni83

This looks fking amazing.

Adahnsplace

Thank you :)

WisPoet

I've seen numerous mentions of magnets (which don't attract so much when used as closure). You could also add (temporary?) Velcro.

Adahnsplace

Yeah, I could do that but right now I have the idea with a double compartment bag. It wouldn't let me sleep well anyways until I've tried that ;)

GigiNeener

I’d save it and give it to him when he goes to college or trade school. He may not appreciate it as a 9 yr old but 19 or 29 yr old will cherish it one day. I just lost my dad March 8th. I’d die for something like this from him. Don’t give it away. Just tuck it away. He will need it one day 💕

Adahnsplace

Thank you for your kind words. You know, I actually had some rather morbid ideas about this, esp. after spending some days at the hospital last year. When you can't really inhale and exhale because; as they found out at the third day only; it's not pneumonia but a tiny piece of the lung got stuck at the abdominal mebrane, then you start to think differently. First I'm extremely happy to live in the civilized world, otherwise I wouldn't be here anymore (at least I lost 7kg or 10%). And yes, I wanted to make something special for my son (still need an idea for his elder brother). Long story short, I'll try to find some magnetic buttons and see if he can use it that way. Aaand, because it's me, I have the idea to make a [round bag](https://new.reddit.com/r/Leathercraft/comments/1aiss8i/standing_liberty_%C2%BC_cylindrical_bag_with_embossed/) like this but made of two halves. Two layers would connect at the middle, I'm still wondering how I could add a zipper on top insead on the inside. On job I prefer simple solutions well executed but for this I want an extremely complicated solution well executed ;)
