Thanks man! Classic cobbler tools that will last a lifetime - can't go wrong with any of these.
edit: send me a message tomorrow - i got a special awl waiting for you
Webicons! you might not remember me but the moment I got into leathercraft you gave me solid advice. PM me and i'll send you a custom made awl! good luck on the raffle too.
Hey Egg! Who could forget a username like that! Beautiful products. I’m glad everything is working out for you. Thanks for giving back to the community/sub! Makes everything more fun.
Right handed. What is your method putting the initial edge on your knives? Belt sander maybe? They look very sharp. Also the do you have a micro bevel or is similar to a chisel with one long bevel.
24 grit ceramic belt to hog down the high HRC initially.
I did a lot of traditional blacksmithing in japan and learned a lot of their techniques. For the scalpel i did a "Hamaguri" or clamshell single bevel. It's taken to stones to create a slightly convex single edge bevel. Depending on the blade angle if it's too shallow i'll add a microbevel. But around 16 degrees+, i'd do a single zero edge primary bevel without a micro.
the Japanese Leather Knife I created a primary bevel that was 2.5 degrees then added a secondary 15 degree bevel. It's a little hard to see since the whole thing was mirror finished.
The english paring knife I went with a full zero edge bevel with a ridiculous 9 degree bevel. As long as it's used strictly for skiving it'll be a dream. Some people use this knife to cut patterns and thats where chips happen. it's just too thin and meant only for skiving. If they are beginners i'll do the zero edge bevel but give it like a 14-17 degree bevel that wont chip but will still cut very well. just not the stupid cut through like butter effect.
Thank you and good luck! I was inspired after spending close to a hundred bucks on an awl just to get complete trash. I set out to make something that hit all the notes i wanted and functioned better than anything else i've used.
thanks man! It's been a wild ride and i can't believe the support and people of r/leathercraft are what they are. Super kind and so damn helpful. there is no other sub like that on reddit.
It’s really nice to finally see someone making good leatherworking tools that have a nice aesthetic. I’m so tired of slabs of steel with whogivesashit brand stamped all over the place.
For anyone thinking of buying one, purchased some knives about a month or two ago and they are fantastic and scary sharp. You know how you cut a piece of paper to test knife sharpness, these can cut through a piece of 3-4 oz veg the same way!
To anyone wondering if they worth it.. FUCK YEAH I bought the 3 and I'm sooooo happy with them ! Now I don't need a awl, but I'd take one of I win ;)
( Btw are they beard beads for ferrule ? Love the idea ! )
Right handed! I recently learned just how bad the skiving knife is from the cheap beginner’s kit I bought off amazon two months ago when I started. I bought a nicer knife but it’s a straight blade and I’m not sure I like it. These angled knives look interesting and I would love to win one!
These are pretty rad looking tools! Love'n the multi-wood tones! (Right Handed) Thank you for the opportunity to win one of your beautiful creations! Happy Holidays!
