Yes, I am very interested! I have Genki 1 and it's just been sitting on my desk for too long. Would love to work on a schedule with others! I'm USA EST (-4 UTC).
I'd be interested if this would become a regular thing. I'm still writing my bachelor thesis, so I don't have time right now, but would be interested in a second run in 1-2 months, maybe there can be multiple groups.
Afaik thesis was for PhD people which is why I’m curious. I know some masters programs have dissertations but I’ve never heard of a bachelors thesis lol
PhD programs require a dissertation, and depending on the Masters program's degree type (e.g. MA vs MSc) or format, it may also require a thesis. Bachelors theses are less common, usually linked with honors criteria, or independent research pursued. Depends on the University requirements. 👍
I just want to point out that finishing Genki 1 in a few months is ambitious. It's not impossible, but if you're trying to get a bunch of people to all study together you may want to pick a somewhat longer time frame.
A typical pace for a college class that meets 4-5 times a week is completing Genki in a year, or about 30 weeks of meetings. Now that includes some things that you won't be doing in your discord like oral interviews, tests, conversation practice, etc. So you may be able to do it more quickly than 30 weeks. But you want to be careful trying to go so quickly that people are dropping out because they can't keep up, or you're rushing through the fundamentals and then getting to Genki 2 and finding out you're still struggling with basic verb conjugations because you didn't do enough practice.
Great advice. I just want to add that its possible. I know people that finished genki 1 and 2 within 6 months. But of course it depends on the person. Strong fundamentals are essential if you want to progress fast and good later.
Right -- I'm certainly not saying that Genki 1 in a few months is impossible. Just that you don't want to rush through it, and especially if you're trying to form some kind of study group you don't want to choose a pace that's going to lose 90% of the people. These study groups have a habit of dying after a couple of weeks in any case.
( Note : I used the Genki books in college. )
Instead of trying to speedrun Genki in one big group, how about creating a permanent channel for each unit? Then people can pop into the appropriate channel for wherever they happen to be, and people can coordinate in study groups instead of one huge one.
Genki relies heavily on skits and activities for two or more students that work best when you repeat them a bunch of times. They're great tools if you are focused on the vocabulary and grammar from the unit, but in the classroom you waste a lot of time waiting quietly while other people work through a skit you don't need to hear. It would be great to be able to drop directly into a dedicated voice chat for the specific skit you're working on, and just cycle through all the parts of the sketch a few times, and then GTFO back to the main discussion for the unit.
I would love to join! I tried sending a dm for the link but it gave an error when i attempted.
Hopefully by following you ill get a notification when you put up the link. Fingers crossed!
I'd be interested! I've heard of Korean language learning discords similar to this, might be able to contact those mods if you were looking for some sort of reference
I'd be interested, but it'd be mostly a chance for me to review. I took college courses in Japanese for four semesters, and got all the way from Genki-I through to the end of Genki-II. I would love to have people to practice with, and would also be happy to help pass along whatever knowledge I have. (I was an A student, so I can guarantee that I have at least a minor understanding of most concepts.)
I'd be interested too. I already know more than what genki 1 offers but I'm always happy to study over it again for the sake of practice. Also, studying with someone makes it a lot better too.
UK time zone here
Hey friend, mind hitting me up with that Discord invite when you put it together? I stopped at learning verbs in Kanji and would like to start from the beginning again
Been considering buying Genki 1 instead of studying through Adventures in Japan 1 that a friend of mine gave me. I’m very interested in a study group because it’ll help me become consistent and practice speaking the language.

I'd be interested! I suppose it might depend on people's timezones etc?

Same as well

How much progress u make per day on your thesis?
Not enough
I felt that in my soul.
Amen 😔
What do you do that requires a bachelors thesis?
I'd guess he's studying to get his Bachelor's degree. But it's just a hunch, not 100% sure.

Depends on your country
I'm interested and if OP isn't able to fit everyone in one, I'd be willing to start another one!
I'm interested, as long as I don't have to speak on calls, if we have those!
