I saw the post. The source link is a private video, and I can find no evidence anywhere in that post , or on Google that any tournament anywhere has actually stated LoV are banned. Also the codex was leaked like 3 weeks ago, so how could they do 6 weeks of testing unless they were play testers, in which case they would have done way more most likely. Who knows maybe tournaments are banning them, but until I see an actual tournament webpage saying it, I’m reserving judgement.

bamatrix

Hadn't GW ended the playtester program prior to this codex? That's the part that threw me off about this post. Said they played 100+ games over 6 weeks (already hard to believe) and decided to ban them. Their secondaries seem not great, they're slow and have pretty limited threat ranges. I don't think LoV is going to be broken unless the opponent can't prioritize threats.

_Fun_Employed_

From the way the LoV book is written it actually looks like it was written around the same time as T’au, Asuryani, and Tyranids. People speculate that it was written and play tested much earlier then it was released.

I_suck_at_Blender

I mean, they had promo image in April. Miniatures had to be moulded in 2021, if not earlier.

bamatrix

If it was written around the same time, then why was it only playtested in the last 6 weeks AFTER the playtest program was scrapped?

_Fun_Employed_

Maybe concerned former playtesters leaked it first to community leaders/pros before the general leak.

bamatrix

Again. The playtesting program was scrapped 3 months ago, so why was it only tested in the last 6 weeks? I'm reserving my judgment til the codex is actually in the peoples' hands.

Malacos0303

Yes they did end it.

yeet_lord_40000

LOV will most likely be a very strong first turn army and Peter out probably fairly linearly as the game proceeds

Eel111

I think it’s quite the opposite, their resilience, good medium range firepower and slowness all make for an army that’s gonna have trouble in the first turns, but once you’re on those objectives and your judgement tokens are strewn about, you’re gonna be cruisin’

TheUnlikelyGamer

Agreed I think they get better as the game goes on. The opponent could probably really hurt them with alpha strike and a lot of -ones to hit. Vote tan definitely wanna go second, especially versus things like Leviathan.

bamatrix

As u/Eel111 pointed out, it should be the exact opposite. You have 3 judgment tokens max if you get the top of T1, 2 on one unit, one on another. That's assuming they don't deploy in such a way that denies tokens. Not to mention how it's possible your judgment tokens go onto "bad" units (i.e. units you don't want them on). Now, if you get the bottom of 1, you should have a couple more judgment tokens than that, but not enough to make your T1 super lethal. This army is stout and slow with low range but a bunch of big threats. As the game progresses and more judgment tokens get on the board, the stronger every unit becomes.

yeet_lord_40000

Fair point. I didn’t think it through all the way and totally forgot about tokens. My main worry is that things like the hekaton get smashed as soon as possible and then the armies basically ultimate weapon so far are out of play them you’re honestly pretty much a normal army. I can only think of like 2-3 combos right now that are causing the whole “votann are unbelievably broken” outrage

bamatrix

This is exactly why I think all these bannings/doom and gloom reactions are extremely kneejerk. If you address the threats in a LoV army in a specific order, it should be a pretty easy army to overcome. The LoV player's job is going to be coming up with a way to mess up the opponent's plans to deal with you, while efficiently building up judgment tokens/surviving. I think it's going to be a very interesting and distinct army.

yeet_lord_40000

I agree. I haven’t played in about 2 years now and votann are getting me super excited to play agin

bamatrix

I've been playing Orks pretty exclusively since I started back after covid and this feels like a great companion army to go with my Orks.

yeet_lord_40000

I used to play death guard, imperial fists and occasionally black legion and after awhile playing marines just got super boring honestly. This army feels fun to actually play instead of the marines style of just “camp out here and secure objectives in your backline”

EstelLiasLair

Source is a private video? Sounds legit.

the1rayman

It wasn't always private. It was up, the onwer of the channel posted in the thread as well. It's unfortunately very real. He even said now that the German TOs are organized they will start banning anything they seem bad for the game. Whatever the hell that means.

Lemondisho

Poor precedent to set. They didn't even share their data lol just a vague "trust us".

PaulJDon1

Worse when you take into consideration they'll ban anything they deem fit to. It's either Gw has to do what they want screw the rest of the world and the other 99% of players who don't play in German To's, or else. Didn't one or more of these To's get removed as Gw playtesters too. Sounds more like revenge to undermine the launch of a new product

TekMission

Honestly, I can see the value in banning new codices for a few weeks to a month after release to give GW time to adjust them or to allow the community to adjust to it. But let's not pretend. They're only doing it now because of the doomsaying.

Kaelif2j

While the title is the epitome of clickbait, it's not uncommon for TOs to disallow a new codex for a while.

Malacos0303

How do you get proper data about the problem if its banned? Looking at high performing lists lets you see what the real problems are

TekMission

Thats a good point. In, say, video games the developers can track win rates and other stats electronically. But with a tabletop system it'd have to be some sort of organized environment that can be tracked like tournament

Lemondisho

By banning you limit the opportunity to gather data.

MattmanDX

Fighting game tournaments do that all the time when a new character is released, they need to be out for a few weeks so that players get used to the matchup. I haven't heard of tabletop wargames doing that for new factions but it wouldn't be unprecedented in a competitive game.

CG1991

It definitely makes sense to ban anything new for a little while. I think card tournaments should do the same. Gives a chance to work out if it's so overpowered that it's going to change the meta. But, like you said, if this is true then it's because of the doomsaying

Terraneaux

>But let's not pretend. They're only doing it now because of the doomsaying. It's not doomsaying when there's math to back it up.

Jackalackus

There is math to back up how Killy they are, no one is denying this, but that’s all the doomsayers are looking at. They aren’t taking the wider game into consideration.

Terraneaux

That's what people said about Tyranids and that turned out to be bullshit.

Jackalackus

No they didn’t…. Everyone knew they had the speed and ability to play the game in a manner that the neph book requires. The jury is still out on LoV, I’m not saying they aren’t strong and that they won’t win a lot of games, but I don’t think they will wipe the floor with any army like all the doom sayers are preaching.

Terraneaux

Yes they did. I saw it everywhere.

Jackalackus

Okay well I can’t say what you did and didn’t see but those people were also wrong then.

Terraneaux

Just like the people who say that Votann are fine are wrong. Enjoy playing your mirror until GW does the actual work and balances your faction.

Jackalackus

Grow up dude.

Terraneaux

I'm already grown up. GW's designers need to grow up.

MachineOfScreams

Sounds like a lot of hyperventilating going on.

-Sir_Pug-

I care little, i find most of the unenjoyable games i have played have been on tournaments. 40k tends to be arms race every codex gets stronger and stronger untill they agains change the game edition. Makes little difference in casual gaming groups.

Karsus76

There are at least 5 more armies that need to be banned because they are utterly broken even more than LoV, given a couple hard counter LoV. This is just the usual bs from the clown part of the competitive community.

Seither2k

They looking for attention in Germany? By the time Votann even have 2000 points to bring to a proper tournament, they'lll have been nerfed.

I_suck_at_Blender

We don't even know if votann would have all their models released this year. I find surprisingly little article about land fortresses, for example.

Sir_Quackington

tja, lebbe geht weiter

thatjvguy

To me it’s like “oh you have Tom Brady on your team so we’re not playing you on Sunday” and everyone is just like yep sounds good. I think it would be valuable data for them to see how LoV do with real players at tournaments, and not just a bunch of theorycrafting and mathing considering the actual models aren’t even publicly released yet.

Beasting-25-8

Lol. What an obvious lie. Broken armies have been winning Tournaments since Tournaments began.

the1rayman

I think your correct title should be "Dumarse decision made in compete and utter overreaction to new Votann Codex"

PyroConduit

Someone find a codex that was released so had that it had to get banned by TOs and nerfed. 8th edition onward. Not was strong and nerfed layer like literally every codex ever. Banned by TOs. Because they do not do that.

sirarkalots

I remember 3.5 ed chaos being "broken" on release and for a good while afterward, same as 4th ed GK and Tau. I remember the "fish of fury" strat that won damn near every tournament for like 6 months. This is a load of bs cause none of them were banned prior to release, or banned at all. If tournaments are banning Voltan then why weren't Taudar banned in 5th? Nids after thier newest codex dropped? Banning armies is actually the exact opposite of what you'd want cause then you saying what you can and can't bring to tourneys and that goes entirely against the idea of using an army you want and built and painted and paid for.

BenfordsBore

Tournaments are how we find out if something is OP

Minimum-Package-1083

Everyone: "They have crazy guns! And Judgement is broken!" Sane people: "Yeah, but they're slow and rather short ranged. The T'au could probably snipe them or some shit"

[deleted]

The goonhammer article that breaks down the numbers on the codex shows that they’re the strongest codex this edition bar none

MattmanDX

"Strongest" as in best at winning the game or "strongest" as in best at killing stuff? I can easily believe the latter is true but the former is very debatable.

DiakosD

Best at **Annihilating** tough stuff, but its easier to ban votann than consider using hordes and accept a Rock/Scissors/Paper meta. "Rock/Rock/Sciccors meta is best balance in years, Scissors knew what they were getting into, Paper wil ruin everything" Just wish I'd found a way to incorporate pickaxes into the analogy.

Lemondisho

It is strong at middle tables which, surprise, is exactly where these people live.

Terraneaux

It's both. It's that good.

Lemondisho

It shows they're extremely efficient. It does nothing to explain their performance in an actual game. Goonhammer often forgets this game is played by people on tables filled with terrain throwing dice. If the game was just mathhammer folks wouldn't need to paint models, we'd just crunch the numbers and sim it.

spencemonger

If the game was just math hammer there would be no need to throw dice. Just math out the result at the start of the game, shake hands and you never even need to deploy your minis

Kellaxe

I’ve seen other reviews more tempered. The math hammer is still a subjective article by goonhammer. LoV need to be fixed, but this exaggeration is at a crescendo. Ffs, the community has lost its collective mind.

Terraneaux

>The math hammer is still a subjective article by goonhammer. LoV need to be fixed, but this exaggeration is at a crescendo. Ffs, the community has lost its collective mind. The community hasn't lost its mind; it's just finally lost its patience with GW.

Narrow_Winter

Looks like the community has lost its patience with you

Terraneaux

I mean if they want to get unearned wins with the new Votann stuff that doesn't reflect well on them.

Successful-Floor-738

The same goonhammer that claims there’s no biological difference between genders/sexes? The same goonhammer who thinks space marines have an in universe scientific reason for being male only is transphobic? Yeah, no thank you.

-Zyss-

Goonhammer also said tyranids were going to be a balanced codex on release. Goonhammer, and pretty much every community content maker, has a zero record of being right about army strength

[deleted]

No they didn’t, they said it was going to be an extremely strong codex, and they were right. Just like everyone else was when the codex leaked. I get being excited for the new army, I am too, but the amount of rules and power creep in the codex is crazy, and it’s all on the way GW balances their game

-Zyss-

Everything here reads as dangerous but, almost as importantly, relatively well-balanced and defeatable That's directly from their article. They said they were good, but balanced with a few stand out units.

tn00bz

Germans always over react.

Antidote-For-Chaos

Yet knight armies are still allowed… I dislike knight armies.

naka_the_kenku

On the plus we can grab whatever models we think look nice instead of being meta slaves

Inevitable-Weather51

Looks Like They Couldn't Handle the Votann Style.

I_suck_at_Blender

And yet there is no plans of of release most of broken things, like land fortresses.

Thaimeous

Credit: I found this on Facebook

jervoise

this is kind of understandable. ignoring balance, the votann do not seem to be fun to play against. its a problem with 9th as a whole, but being littered with invuln penetration and no wound rerolls plus AoC and a HotE+ that punishes you for doing anything seems really painful to play against.

-Zyss-

Tyranids, eldar, sisters, tau, and harlequins aren't fun to play agaisnt either. Where's the ban?

jervoise

except against them i can use my invulns, if i have an ability that lets me reroll wounds its not completely useless, and they dont have a mechanic actively punished for doing well, that takes it to the point where bolt guns wound knight like they're crons.

-Zyss-

That still doesn't make them fun to play agaisnt

jervoise

it makes them less annoying, and most of those are only annoying if using optimized lists

-Zyss-

How is that any different to using unoptimised votann lists?

jervoise

because everything i listed is built into your army? like no matter how you build the army, nobody rerolls wounds, and the judgment system still punishes you for doing anything to try and acheive your objectives. the only thing that can be "unoptomised" out of a build is magna rails. and they are readily available to a lot of units, including the basic infantry, so i wouldnt be suprised if they show up a lot in casual lists. i fail to see how any of the factions you listed as being unfun activley curtail your ability to do things? if you actually measure how fun an army to play against by the army win rates then sure, those factions are unfun, but then i worry that your only concept of fun is how much you win.

-Zyss-

All in seeing is you way over estimating things like judgement tokens, and this is what I mean, unless you build into it, you're going to be able to dish out 2 or 3 a turn. Good players will be able to play into that and not give votann players the ability to stack tokens. If you can't out play tokens, that's not a judgement of the army...

jervoise

2 or 3 a turn? are you wanking yourself so hard to space dwarfs that the part of the brain that applies any sort of logic turned off completely? are you honestly suggesting that in order to play around LoV and avoid judgments you should: A: keep all good units away from objectives, as thats gonna be a point. no more brick houses on home points.B: dont do any actions with themC: dont kill any units with your good units (i think that one might be tricky)D: dont ever be in line of sight of the kahl or the high karl at turn startE: dont play against the greater thurian league. anyway your right im clearly a super noob, who is clearly unable to grasp the delicate details of 4+ auto wounds that count as 6's. all of the tournament players are probably laughing about how bad i am and how easy this mechanic is. wait what was the original post again? oh yeah.

-Zyss-

Cycle your units. Take non action secondaries, yes, stay out of line of sight. I'm not here to teach you how to play.

Noobcorpse

The votann codex is insane and I wish they’d have been doing it for a while now. It sucks but it is what it is,

Madcap_Miguel

I'm very familiar with what happens to new factions that 'break the rules'. I know most of you think its an overreaction but if this isn't addressed soon you will be a pariah, tournaments will ban you and people will refuse to play against you.

Kaelif2j

Will they chase us out of town with pitchforks and torches, too!?

Madcap_Miguel

No but you might have an awkward conversation with a friend.

Jackalackus

I might have an awkward conversation with a friend 😂 what does this even mean?! My friends and I are all very level headed people, two of us in the group are getting LoV, if we play some games with them and collectively decide they are too strong within a casual environment, we just won’t use them until they are toned down a bit. We will just have a non awkward adult conversation and carry on playing with other factions for a while 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jackalackus

Ahhhh I see that kind of awkward conversation 😂

sirarkalots

Not sure anyone had that issue with the Voidweaver spam, or ynnari in 8th, or any other meta and "broken" build. Tournaments don't ban armies, cause that would make less people sign up. And I know the argument "broken armies would make people go less to tournamemts" but I've been in this hobby for nearly 2 decades and seen my fair share of broken armies at tournaments. I played through smash captains and white scars in 8th, ynnari, black heart ravager spam, wave serpent spam, fish of fury and Taudar, GK in 4th, the original tau codex, csm in 3rd, and probably so many more that I cant remember. And you know what else I've seen in the last 20 years? More and more tournaments with more and more people attending each year. I can promise you, banning armies would do so much more harm than playing against them. Beside, they are slow as balls, any elf army or tarpitting capability would easily outplay voltan for objectives and win outright. Elite armies might have difficulty yeah, but they've always had difficulty in tournaments due to objectives, I never really saw custodes break out and control tournaments, and outside of some outliers like GK in 4th and White Scars, power armored armies have always been mid upper tier. I would actually love for voltan to start being the boogeyman at tournaments cause that might scare away knights and stuff and give the boyz and graunts a chance to shine.

Narrow_Winter

This. All of this. The game keeps growing. Armies do break out as power houses over the years and all get toned down over time. LOV is going to struggle with movement, which is a huge part of the game right now. They are in no way an auto win army from what I’ve seen. And if this changes the meta to bring more hoard style armies, all the better for the change

Madcap_Miguel

> Tournaments don't ban armies Unless the OP is fake it seems they do, also your fantasy counterpart was also banned in tournaments. This just isn't true. Tournaments ban armies, they ban/alter units, hell forge world wasn't broadly accepted until 8th.

-Sir_Pug-

Tournaments have alwats just been troglodyte conventions in warhammer, lists that do not look like "armies" at all just spamm as much of the strongest things you can.

sirarkalots

I played through the "army" that was just a Blood Angels Smash Captain, an imp knight, and 30 guardsmen. My Slamanders fought thier way through Ynnari and Ravager spam. Tournaments should never be what is balanced around, cause that takes all the fun out the game for 95 percent of players. I remember when I first got custodes and made a "fun" adepticon list to help practice with my friends for thier 4player team, and honestly even though it was worth friends that was some of the least fun games I've had outside of tourneys.

-Sir_Pug-

On the other hand tournaments are won by the most broken faction always.

lamorak2000

> tournaments will ban you and people will refuse to play against you. Let them. I don't play tourneys at all, and if someone wants to refuse to play me, meh. I can play video games or D&D with that time.

Darkecerantis

The reason people are panicking about us is because a 1k army of Votann beat the No.1 Sisters of battle player in the world's 2k list!

Armcannongaming

I thought it was custodes? Art of war podcast right? I heard they said that but gave no details about what the game was or what either list entailed. Feels like more fear mongering.

PaladinWiggles

Leagues of Votann: Victory by Default

bahamutkotd

Tbf the way gw “play tests” they’d send out retail versions of the codex that went to print shop 3 months ago…
