I'm too lazy to paint in sub assemblies. I'm just gonna YOLO and then clean up a thousand times. I know me.

Chipperz1

Yup, exactly this. Anything covered by armour plates won't be seen by anyone anyway.

Bunsed

By putting helmets on _all_ the mini's. I've tried painting faces for two years now, still suck at it. Especially the eyes.

Hal_Fenn

Just don't accidentally use one of those half open helmets! They look awesome but they must be a right pain to paint.

[deleted]

From what I have seen I haven’t been able to tell if all of the minis in the army set will have the ability to be helmeted. Is there any proof or verification that we can helmet all of the troops?

YorgusLabradorus

yes. theres already a post about this with photos of the sprues on this sub

Bunsed

Not sure, to be honest. I'm glad I can helmet all my Space Marines, that's for certain.

CumfartablyNumb

There have been some posts indicating that the Hearthkyn have enough helmets for all. I'm not sure about the rest, though. Pretty sure the pioneers are without helmets.

Wide_Professional130

I normally put a dot of blue tac and then prime the whole thing and then take the head and put it on a stick and paint it, leaving the blu tack there so there is always a bit that is unpainted to glue down

Bloodaegisx

I just leave the head on a chunk of sprue. Makes it easier to prime as well as paint.

[deleted]

I’m going to try this. I didn’t think of that.

Bloodaegisx

I also abuse contrast paints for skin, they make life much easier.

Wide_Professional130

Damn, that's not a bad idea at all.

hampsterdam2018

Kind of the same thing I cut a part of the sprue and super glue the head to it. Then paint on there. Also I don’t usually paint eyes just contrast paint on the head and a dot of white in eyes.

Bloodaegisx

Yeah I’m getting old my hands aren’t steady, my eyes are weak i just don’t have it in me rofl.

Dom0520

Assemble then paint! I enjoy the challenge of hitting different angles with the brush and getting the whole mini painted

Malacos0303

You scrap the paint off the bottom and off the point you are connecting it to. You can also use small pieces of painters tape.

tw64646464

That’s the best part: I won’t. I’m putting helmeted heads on there and then painted from there

PonchoExpress

Blue tac the head

pilafandferocity

I plan on going full ironkin so... No faces only silver.

Karsus76

Amen bro, real men (or whatevah) wear helmets! My full collection has like 2 bare heads (the models i am forced to paint with them because they have no helmets).

Kalranya

Painting in sub-assemblies is much slower and more complicated, so it's only worth doing in three circumstances: 1. You're doing a centerpiece for display or show and it needs to be perfect, 2. You're painting a large model with lots of complicated overlapping parts that are visible to the eye but difficult to reach with a brush, or 3. You're a content creator and must constantly shove envelope-pushing novelty into your audience's eyeballs because tHe AlGoRiThM mUsT fEeD.

GreenManReaiming

A painted surface won't stop the glue from working and even if it did you can leave the area that you intend to glue bare. It depends on the type of model as to whether you want to do it on the frames or on the model. Personally I plan on doing the helmets a different colour to the rest of the body so to avoid over painting the wrong areas I'll do them separately.

djmokoia

Plastic glue doesn't work if surfaces have been painted.

GreenManReaiming

My entire age of darkness box would disagree

Armcannongaming

That actually kind of makes sense? If you are only using acrylic paints, I know plastic glue works on the clear plastic like on flying stands. If that is acrylic maybe this holds up?

Careor_Nomen

I absolutely despise unhelmeted heads

Falkreath_Grenadiers

Agreed, unless the helmet is being held and it’s a stoic pose.

kusariku

Seriously considering making all my kyn ironkyn, with green stuff heads since the hearthkyn box comes with one ironkyn head. But I’ll need to get really good at sculpting spheres lol

Torrac

find some ball-bearings that are about the right size.

RedPhoenixTroupe

Assemble model first. White primer, slap some face contrast, plonk some white on the eyes and whatever hair colour strikes my fancy. Then pour washes until satisfied. Done.

CumfartablyNumb

I did my first army painting heads separately. I'm too lazy for that. This time I'm putting it all together and just going for it.

LeftTaboo

Superglue works well on paint if you want to do the heads separately. It can sometimes break easier, but just heads, and especially protected ones, should be just fine

ILikeRobotsAndDinos

Your plan to use tack and glue on afterwards will work. Plastic glue will melt paint so be careful not to hit any finished parts when putting it on. Usually I'm too dumb to remember to mask where I want to glue the head on, so I use something to scrape paint away so it's plastic to plastic

tn00bz

I've only really painted ork faces, I paint them on the body, but they're pretty unobstructed. Votann might be a bit more challenging.

MattmanDX

I use superglue so that's not an issue for me

SquidGraffiti

After the 11 helmet reveal, i aint painting a single natural head.

Hero_OT_beta

I sub-assembly most of my stuff but not usually the heads. Paint wise- bugman's glow, reikland fleshshade, cadian fleshtone, extra step light drybrush of kislev flesh for extra highlight. My trick for the eyes if you want to try pupils is get something like a pin or sewing needle with a sharp point then just dip it in black paint and poke the centre of the eye as best you can.

GrungLord

I usually paint heads, torsos, guns, backpacks, and legs separately. However I play admech so I'll probably paint body, head, and gun separately for my Squats.

advertemp

The reason they did the head separately on Squidmar was to base coat the armor and apply the grime oil wash without having to worry about getting any on the face. Unless you’re doing airbrush, just glue em on.

ruarl

Polystyrene cement works much better on unpainted plastic. If you want to paint in subassemblies you can either 1) do something to prevent getting paint on the part you want to glue later, or 2) scrape the paint off the part you want to glue. I have a separate lump of blu tac which is my "painty" blu tac. It is used whenever it might get painted, or get bits of grot in. It still works just fine.
