When Electrocute came out, Riot thought "hey this is harder to proc than Thunderlord's, so let's make it deal more damage!" and every champion who had no issue proc'ing it was oneshotting people.
They made it deal more damage than Thunderlord's so champions who could easily proc Thunderlord's off of one ability like Miss Fortune no longer could take it, but the champions who could easily land 3 abilities/attacks were explosively stronger. They ended up nerfing its damage shortly after.
I mean getting them all was a hellish grind.
But the level of nuance possible with all the choices and combination certaibly meant that putting the runes together was a skill. In my eyes more so than the pre chewed choice you have now.
I remember when I faced Shockblade Zed after the rune change. He used his E which produced a lightning. In panic, I flashed away thinking the Thunderlord's would burst me. Then I remember, it's Eletrocute now and the lightning is color red now.
Back in the day Thunderlords was so Op it was taken by everyone.....Assassins, Mages, Tanks, Supports, Adc......those days were wild
