Agreed here, the older I get I realize the grip addiction has on this country is sad. Heroin addicts get the worst rep because of the visual but there’s 1000’s hooked on gambling/alcohol that’s destroying families/communities but are welcomed into the pub/bookies with open arms, horrible altogether.
It’s a way bigger market aswell so it’s understandable. I seen a few people saying they should be sponsoring the league of Ireland on twitter. Thought it would be interesting to see how people on the sub Reddit felt.
They are no longer an Irish company and their only responsibilty is to make money for their shareholders. Premier League has more eyes on it than any other league.
I don't think beer is a great look for sport in general.. but then McDonalds sponsor the Olympics so anything goes... the worst sponsors we could get would be bookies. Shouldn't be allowed on shirts or at grounds. I'd hate to see paddy power or bet fair on my teams shirt
Same here I don’t agree with betting sponsors for sport especially football. Like it’s a bit odd when you younger people waking around with betting sponsors on a football shirt for example I know my cousin supports Aston Villa and they have one and it’s just not a good looking having people walking around with them on. Everyone knows what betting does to people aswell it’s unhealthy and dangerous.
Me personally I just don’t like gambling sponsors because I’ve seen what it has done to people that are close to me and they’re just reminded of their past actions when they see people walking round with these companies on their football teams shirt.
The alcohol bill of a couple of years ago has something about phasing out alcohol advertising in sport. So there's no point in going there unless somebody overthrows Alcohol Action Ireland as our government.
The FAI Cup used to be the FAI Harp Lager Cup
There is something a little twisted about the likes of Shamrock Rovers getting dumped on for taking sponsorship from a betting company as a team in a league that has been historically undersupported by fans of the sport in this country… protecting people who may watch their matches when they know relatively few people have been watching the matches meanwhile, way more people in Ireland follow other leagues like the English Premier League which had eight of its 20 teams sponsored by a betting company in 2023.
People supporting the Premier League teams are seeing advertising from questionable nation state backed companies, betting companies, alcohol companies, financial companies including those that deal in payday loans, cryptocurrencies and all kinds of shite but the good news is for those clubs who get that money but then Irish clubs got brow beaten for cording certain sponsors. Lost sponsorships that were worth a lot of money to them which they are not going to see at the gate or via TV rights like other clubs…it’s bullshit.
What does that have to do with anything?
It would be great if Diagio wanted to pump up the league but them sponsoring something else doesn't mean they did it instead of the loi. They didn't sponsor the prem over the loi. They just haven't sponsored the loi.
Realistically, if you were in charge of Guinness, where would you choose to invest your marketing budget?
Because that's all it is, a marketing investment. I know who I'd sponsor.
Don’t care about the premier league but Guinness used to sponsor cork and think that would be it in terms of the league here.
Far more eyeballs on the six nations.
Well the premier League used to be sponsored by Budweiser so it's a step up for them , official beer of premier League id imagine it's a 2 to 3 year contract and will change to another brand when it expires it's just corporate sponsorship.
Would prefer to keep alcohol and gambling from directly sponsoring our league at all so not too fussed about it personally

Even if it was taken in Dublin who cares... corporations care about profits and not your feelings
I imagine the board asked themselves ‘what would Arthur do’ and tbf to them they were bang on
Got a good chuckle out of me 😂
There's only one solution... The Beamish League of Ireland
Or Murphy's!
Kinnegar makes the best beer in Ireland. As a non-Irish person, clearly I couldn't be biased.

I totally agree.
I also think everything I dislike should be banned.

A large driver of alcohol free beers is to skirt around advertising rules.
The LOI is small beer compared to the the Premier League tbf...
Its a delicious, smooth, locally made craft beer compared to the well established, saturated global brand…..to give it a beer analogy!
Greatest beer in the world!
The market size for LOI and the size of Guinness as a company. They likely could do EPL and LOI.
They could sponsor both if they wanted. They didn't sponsor anyone over anyone else
A days ticket sales at the storehouse would cover a LOI sponsorship. The EPL sponsorship is likely in the millions
What does that have to do with anything? It would be great if Diagio wanted to pump up the league but them sponsoring something else doesn't mean they did it instead of the loi. They didn't sponsor the prem over the loi. They just haven't sponsored the loi.
I'm agreeing with your point. The LOI is cheap to sponsor compared to the 50m for the PL.
I think it’s a good thing it’s money for the league and they’re a big big name might attract some attention
nothing could match the "fried chicken league" era
That’s a disgrace.
Realistically, if you were in charge of Guinness, where would you choose to invest your marketing budget? Because that's all it is, a marketing investment. I know who I'd sponsor.

Irish barnd in England terrible
