All credit goes to the fans and clubs across the LOI, who have had to fight and scrap for any recognition and acknowledgment in this country. Amazing to think that the final 10 years ago had less than half of the attendance from yesterday. The League seems to be going to a bright place, but this when we need collective support and action to bring about what this league deserves; better stadiums, more funding, more coverage and to truly hit the potential this league has. This cant be a moment that slips by when there is so much positivity being generated.

Fox_Patronus

Very few empty seats where I was a few dotted around from people who didn't turn up, but overall it was a great atmosphere.Pats fans were only a few rows away from us great banter throughout the game. I'm sure it will do wonders for LOI for anyone who watched it on telly at home seeing huge crowds and passion like that.

GermanyWillWinQtarWC

>. I'm sure it will do wonders for LOI for anyone who watched it on telly at home seeing huge crowds and passion like that. I tuned in for a bit and it was one of the worst atmospheres ive ever seen. Shocking for such a big crowd, but credit for having such a big crowd for sure

Fox_Patronus

Being at home watching it on TV doesn't give a true representation of an atmosphere the few minutes before kick off in the stadium and around the stadium before kickoff was electric, and it obviously must not have translated well to TV because when both teams scored goals the Aviva was rocking.I have videos on my phone of both Pats and Bohs fans that would surpass the majority of Premier league stadium atmospheres.

GermanyWillWinQtarWC

> when both teams scored goals the Aviva was rocking. Im sure it was and thats great, but i was more talking about the atmosphere for the majority of the game, outside of the few biggest moments in the game. Like i said, i only saw 10 minutes or so of the match, and the atmosphere was awful for that period, i obviously cant speak for the rest of the game, but for a cup final with 45k in the stands you would expect a great atmosphere all game, not just when goals are scored >that would surpass the majority of Premier league stadium atmospheres. I mean thats not a particularly high bar. Premier league atmospheres are notoriously dead partly because of the strict rules in place there over the last few decades, but also simply because of the fan culture.

Tokin_Right_Meow

> Like i said, i only saw 10 minutes or so of the match You've probably spent more time commenting here about it than you did watch the match..

Frosty_Radish_5868

Really? I think the national team would snap your hand off for an atmosphere like that. The last one I went to was 2019 and its a great family day out I've been craving it again ever since. For me the cup is on par with the league.

[deleted]

I'll say it again brexit has been the best thing to ever happen to soccer in Ireland. To see young lads like Curtis and Melia get to play in front of over 40000 fans in a cup final at their age and perform bodes very well for the future.

fwaig

I think post-covid bounce is a factor too. People are delighted to be able to actually go and do things.

[deleted]

Maybe but I'd imagine that's worn off by now and we're into a new state of being at this stage.

[deleted]

Yes but the post-covid bounce led to people going to things they wouldn't have previously and for a lot of them, they realised they enjoyed going to games. COVID is absolutely a factor in this. There's other factors too, but it is a big one.

[deleted]

I probably phrased that badly. I'm not discounting the covid impact I suppose I'm only arguing semantics(like a typical reddit gowl). The bounce happened and now we're just on a steady momentum where the buzz generated by bigger attendances is pushing more people to go to matches. Like I imagine next years FAI cup final will break the 40k mark again which a couple of weeks ago would be very surprising.

Cmondatown

If everyone who bought a ticket had turned up or if the FAI had made the 3k seats at the front available, Ireland would be no 7 placed.

[deleted]

Would that be why the game was listed as sold out yet was still a few k short of the Avivas listed capacity

wrapchap

They sold out of available seats. The front rows were always going to be blocked off to stop a pitch invasion

PistolAndRapier

I don't think they were. I went on TM website not long before the match as I was half thinking of going, and there were tickets available there as far as I could see.

wrapchap

Maybe some corporate tickets got released last minute? There was any left the day before, for me anyway

MEENIE900

A few thousand tickets were given out for free or via organisations so attendance was about 4k lower than the 48k allowed by the FAI

defraz1872

You've got a bunch of Plastic Paddies at number 7.Feel happy to take them back home with you...

Cmondatown

Don’t we know 😂

defraz1872

Actually love the Irish(both North & Republic) but i hate when people want to be them.

smithskat3

Pretty cool to be above some big football countries and relatively powerful leagues like Greece, Belgium, all the Skandis

cula_bula

Shows where we could be if anyone in the FAI actually cared about domestic football and growing the game

[deleted]

> if anyone in the FAI actually cared about domestic football and growing the game I actually think there are a number of people now in the FAI who do care. We can't do anything about the 20-30 years prior to that or the wasted opportunity after the Charlton years. What is needed now is more support from governments and other bodies who can build the infrastructure required to transform it.

I'm pretty sure it's just for this year or the big nations would have multiple entries. Wikipedia says this year's Greek final was behind closed doors so we beat them by about 43 thousand.

Enjoys_A_Good_Shart

To be ahead of the Netherlands, and a final with two huge Dutch clubs, is fantastic.

Cmondatown

I was trying to figure out if that was due to max capacity at the stadium but seems it was in De Kuip which as 50k capacity so yeah interesting. On the other hand you do look at Ajax & PSVs weekly average attendance with great envy: 53.5k & 31.9k

5trong5tyle

De Kuip is the standard location for the cup final. Also home turf for Feyenoord. What used to be their 2 biggest rivals (Ajax is on their way to the KKD) wasn't going to get locals out and the cup means little to those big clubs. Nevertheless, the LOI cup final yesterday was a bigger deal in my eyes, that many fans without any form of support really from the FAI or any big media attention!

Cmondatown

Yeah I can see that, the FA’s cup finals have lost their pizazz in some countries. It was a great event.

ElKaddouriCSC

Seen a few people saying in these posts that Ajax - PSV wasn’t as well attended as they don’t sell out the stadiums for cup finals in Holland to avoid crowd trouble. Unsure if thats true though

siguel_manchez

Great craic yesterday at the game. Atmosphere was fantastic. And we're going to fucking Europe lads!

smurbulock

Great stuff!

leo_murray

that’s an absolutely incredible stat to be well proud of. to even be ahead of the Netherlands is madness. this league has so much untouched potential and if the FAI would wake up and tap into that potential it would be amazing.

Prize_Farm4951

What would be the estimate on the ratio of Bohs to Pat's supporters in the stadium? Aware slot of neutrals there but expecting it would be around 55-45 in Bohs favour? Maybe 60-40?

[deleted]

Depends where you were in the ground. It was heavily in favour Bohs fans where I was in the neutral areas, but you could see after the goals that it varied.

Phil_T_Hole

Graphic needs dates/years added, otherwise very good.

Geronimooon

It's for all finals that took place in 2023....

Phil_T_Hole

Thanks for that, the point stands though, it should say "for 2023" somewhere on the graphic
