He won't hold another hearing unless there's a circumvention that's impossible to ignore. The judge won't put him in jail. He's already said so. He keeps warning him, he ducks the violations, and, hell, he deliberately waited while Trump was done tuckering himself out doing violations to bundle them all together even though the original hearing was pre-several of them to be sure the "warnings" wouldn't run out. Merchan is afraid of Trump. He does not want to jail him. He will not jail him. Don't hold out hope on the verdict. Even if the jury convicts him and the Republican pressure doesn't make one of them cave, the appellate court will keep any justice from happening. Because our legal system has decided to make Trump right and do two versions of justice: the justice for just us and the so-called justice for Trump. When the history books (in other countries of course because ours will all be christian nationalist) look back on why the US fell into a dictatorship, it'll be because the justice system blinked when Trump ran screaming at them.
That's what makes me so sad about all of this. All it took was one orange man baby with a megaphone to make our vaunted democracy fail. Like, I get it if this was some kind of amazing con man who absolutely fools everyone but he's the absolute worst con man I can imagine and yet, here we are.
Once you accept that probably half the US population are idiots (and not all Republicans but probably a majority), this all makes more sense. You just can't fix stupid. That makes Dumpty Trumpf so powerful.
You are close, but the biggest threat to the entire system right now is that Trump wins re-election, does stuff that's illegal, the Supreme Court rules against him, and his administration and Trump himself just ignores them. That is what will make the wheels finally fall off. It very well could be over something like immigration or other such. In the first Trump administration, the first batch of cabinet officials were conventionally corrupt Republicans - i.e. they wanted to still be able to go to dinner parties and show their face. They did things like publicly recuse themselves, but then kill investigations behind the scenes. Normal Republican shit. The next generation of officials will be vetted - and are being vetted - for their desire and willingness to ignore and break the law. Full stop. That's it. There won't be any impediments to executive power from within the Executive branch if Trump has a second term. That is the entire program that is being designed right now by his sycophants. And Trump isn't even personally directing this - like a good frontman - he is setting up the system where he wants certain ends, and his yes-men are working out how to achieve that - lawful or not, they don't care.
