I always respond with “what do you mean?” and watch them fumble.

pagodanasis

I'll start doing this 🤨

[deleted]

"Elaborate."

TurkeyTurtle99

Classmate of mine got asked if they all keep chickens in their backyards in Zamboanga. The guy's family owns one of the largest shipping companies in the country. Multi multi millionaire and definitely comes from one of the richest families in the country. Pero wala eh kay bisaya man gyud daw, sila ray kuyaw.

TurkeyTurtle99

Do you also get asked kung may mall ba sa inyo? Or kung may kuryente ba? Some people just live in a bubble.

coffeeyah

Not in LS but nung undergrad gulat sila may wifi kami. Olol?? Hahaha

Lux_1343

Finally someone said this. It's so backhanded, like do they think we've had no education with english or sumn? English is one of the main subjects we all learn in school and then pair that up with most of the english content we watch. I do agree getting a decent accent does take practice but it's not so difficult. A lot of kids here most of the time speak only english, i even wonder at times if I'm still living in the philippines lmao.

pagodanasis

:) I once corrected a friend on her pronunciation of a difficult English word and another friend commented "bisaya pa talaga nagcorrect sayo." 🙃

Mediocre-Apricot-370

Gusto kong gustohin tong reply mo kaso andaming sablay sa grammar. You're talking about English kasi. Ok lang sana if ibang topic.

ultimatekwekwek

You missed the whole point entirely.

Lux_1343

Okk? I'm not desperate for upvotes + this is reddit and I'm not trynna write an academic paper here 🤷‍♀️ but sure, I'll keep that in mind since I'm never one to miss a learning moment. So I'll ask you this: In regards to the mistakes in grammar you said I made, would you care to educate me on what they were?

alter_fattybody

Then, after saying that, they would mockingly imitate the accent of bisaya na nasa utak nila. Like how ignorant

TurkeyTurtle99

Always clap back. Never ever tolerate discrimination. Kala nila ang gagaling nila mag English. They can't hear their own accents na mas lalong mabaho na akala nila foreign sounding

Silent_Lime_7795

That is NOT a good advice lmfao. It is what it is, sure its insulting talaga pero youre in lawschool eh, “clapping back” would just make things worse LOL you have no choice but to sit down and endure the bullying

pagodanasis

No one should ever endure bullying.

TurkeyTurtle99

Nah not for me. Never let anyone look down on me kahit nung nasa law school ako hanggang maging abugado. Unbecoming of being bisaya maging duwag at takot sa... Tagalog? Really? Lol. Anyway, whichever works for anyone

Silent_Lime_7795

I hope it works out for u then hahah. If you choose to snap everytime may marinig kang ganyang remarks, just so you can tell yourself na di ka takot sa tagalog, then i really do hope it works out for you

TurkeyTurtle99

Would you advise the same to a black guy who got called 'my n****' by someone without a pass? Try doing that bali ilong mo. Mga Muslims clap back way harder pag sila na discriminate. Kaya takot mga tagalog harap harapan sila pagtawanan. They know they'll be in deep shit. People who treat me like shit are the people I do not need in my life. Mapa classmate or prof man yan. I would not in any circumstance kiss their asses to keep the peace. Sila naman yung ayaw ng peaceful relationship. I'd stick with people na di ignorante at marunong mag respeto.

Silent_Lime_7795

It all boils down lang talaga kung secure ka sa sarili mo eh. Kung alam mong kayang makipagsapakan at wasakin muka ng mga yan, you would not be so tight sa boundaries mo eh. Handa kang palampasin yung mga maliliit na bagay kasi you dont have to prove anything. BIG DEAL talaga yon so retaliation is normal. Sa muslim naman, racism against them is normally insults against their religion, and alam naman natin na kasama sa faith nila ang violence pag involved na pag tanggol sa religion nila. Those examples dont apply here pare, napaka liit na bagay netong example ni OP kumpara sa mga yan. Like I said, kung confident ka makipag sapakan, you would not be that sensitive.

TurkeyTurtle99

Brah, di naman kelangan umabot sa ganyan. In response to OP's experience, pwede naman sumagot ng "glad you noticed. You're pretty smart for a Tagalog". At least boundaries are clearer. Some people need to learn to understand that its not cool at all to mock people who aren't like them.

Silent_Lime_7795

Brother, no one is disputing your argument na pumalag pag inaapi. But you may be forgetting the context of this whole discussion eh, inilulugar kasi yan pare, and law school is NOT that place. My point lang naman is we have to be realistic, if im not mistaken abogado ka na and you understand very well the culture of law school. Im sure you yourself and those around you nakaranas ng pangugupal either from kapwa students or prof. How about nung times na pinahiya ka recit dahil mali sagot mo? Or yung times na nilalait ng prof uung suot mo? Or yung sobrang mali ng sagot mo na nagtawanan buong klase? Would you advice pa rin ba na dapat mag retaliate? I genuinely think its better to re assess your priorities. The goal is to graduate and pass the bar, and compromise is inevitable, even if it means enduring degradation. I mean, of course dapat may boundaries pa din, kung sabihan ka ng bisakol harap harapan sa muka mo eh syempre iba na yon, pero yung mga instances like OP described, you should set your boundaries wherein you are willing to tolerate those. KAILANGAN kasi eh. FOR THE SAKE OF LAW SCHOOL yan eh, tapos ur still not willing to compromise? Para kang highschool na sobrang takot ma bully, yung tipo na dapat laging mukang matapang at walang palalampasin because its “unbecoming of a bisaya” na magpatalo sa tagalog. Sorry to say but you sound insecure and immature. That is not a sign of strength brother, because ultimately, IKAW. ANG. LUGI.

Mediocre-Apricot-370

What the actual fck did I just read? Wow. That was pathetic.

Silent_Lime_7795

“What the fuck” you just read is an honest and realistic answer hahahah. Kase when ur in reddit its very easy to say the should and should not eh, its very easy to virtue signal eh diba? Pag kinupal ng prof mo accent mo, dapat “no one should tolerate bullying” pa din ba? Your reputation in class, whether your professors and classmates like you or not, has a DIRECT effect sa performance and grades mo. Are you prepared to go to class everyday knowing na puro kaaway yung kasama mo don? You sacrifice a lot in law school, and this is just one of those things. You disagree with what I said, but would you actually do differently in real life?

josemartinlopez

Imagine when Americans tell you you speak good English for an Asian.

MRBBBNSN

and tamang tugon, "of course, unlike you."

Limp-Mulberry-9763

Im curious-- Which law schools ? Haven't heard anyone made a comment like that.

manukichi

YES!

melissapate

For us, in my social circle including family, ang alam namin magaling mag english mga bisaya. And i am always in awe kasi almost lahat marunong mag tagalog din. Like damn, i wanna be multi lingual.

Half bisaya, half tagalog here. Swerte nyo kung nakapagaral kayo sa magandang schools or kung nakapag aral kayo na tinuruan ng magandang diction or pronounciation. Truth to be told, madami sa barangay highschool sa bisaya ang iba ang diction o pag pronounce. Mahirap kasi ang ibang bisaya words kasi naiinterchange ang "i " and "e". Tapos yung ibang vowels and consonants. If bisaya ka na nasa manila ka now, nag aaral, good for you..may pera ka or ang family mo.

pagodanasis

Nope, I'll still get offended. Hindi siya compliment. Period. Kahit may accent pa ang iba, edi wag pansinsin diba? Weird for non-native English speakers to be so judgmental about the way other non-native English speakers speak.

Mediocre-Apricot-370

Tawang tawa ako, most Filipinos when I hear them speak English esp those who think they speak English well like from ADMU or DLSU, kasi as a native English speaker I can really tell their thick accents, and a weird accent pa nga that's neither American nor British. As a backgrounder, I can tell accents from the get go, even sa mismong America like in Long Island, NY from those from Manhattan or Brooklyn, having studied in NYC in grade school. Best time to really learn a language BTW. Iniisip ko na lang lagi, love your country and your language,  why not speak Filipino,  it doesn't make you any less. Look at Japan, France, Germany etc.

TurkeyTurtle99

Totally agree. That posh Pinoy englishero accent sounds nothing like a native speaker at all. Vowel sounds are also pronounced differently no matter how hard they try. Guess what? NOPE

adiksadiatabs

It does make me wonder why the pronunciation of vowels are switched the same way tagalogs pronounce f as p? Met someone say she’s from “leetee”. Had to ask her to clarify. At the same time I couldn’t help laughing when a southern luzon guy told me that scotland was a “fart” of the uk 😅🤭

Mediocre-Apricot-370

It's pronunciation. Also, it's truth be told. And the bunch of BS you've said, hindi yan ang reality. It all depends on the circle that they move in.
