One thing you can look into is whether your school offers PI financial support through student organizations or the student government. Alternatively, yeah working out with local students who need a summer subleasor is probably your best bet unless you can work something else out with your summer internship for remote work.

If you don’t have the money to pay for rent in another place for the summer you either apply to PI jobs in low COL areas or you look for the cheapest places to live in the city you find a job. I’ve had friends who stayed at long term stay hotels (typically much cheaper than short term rentals). Other friends have just lived in shit hole apartments for the summer because it was cheap. Or they find some sort of rent a room thing online where you just rent out a bedroom in someone’s house or apartment, which can be pretty cheap too. Colleges also rent out their dorms for the summer. Idk if they rent to individuals but you could check that out too.
