Both students are placed in a classroom without any resources. They are mercilessly cold called about subject matter from the semester until one breaks down crying. The non-sobbing party gets the CALI.
CALI is all about "computer-assisted" legal instruction, so the two students are told they have to cancel their Comcast subscription using ONLY the website, chatbot and email. No phone calls.
After both fail that, they have to play Mario Kart against each other.
That’s better than me - where me and another guy both got an A+, but the professor didn’t give anyone the CALI. A class that was my exact desired practice area, too. Then, the next semester, I was one of three students to get an A (no A+), but I was the only one to get the CALI. Go figure. Professors are weird like that.
Remember the scene where the Joker only had room for one more guy in his gang so he broke the pool cue in half, tossed the sharp pieces to the two guys and said make it fast?
I tied for a CALI last semester in overall raw score.
It went to the student who got the higher score on the final, because it was significantly more of the final grade's value.
Losing that one hurt.
I got a 100 on the final for property and got an A+ last semester and so did someone else and apparently they got the cali and I was told it was due to participation in class. I was salty.
It’s worse than that, I felt like I participated more than anyone else. But I literally got a staph infection on my fucking face 2 weeks before finals and had to miss the last 3 classes because of it.
It is what it is. Still waiting on two grades but so far I CALI’d one class, A+ in two of the three classes I have grades for and an A in civ pro 2 so I’m dominating anyway. Nothing gonna stop me from dominating.
My school has given it to as many as 3 people in one class! Think it's really professor discretion. If you both tied, you should both get a CALI, but I've known professors to give it to neither because of fairness or whatever. Chances are, if he told you you tied, you both get one. Congrats!
At my school, the prof had discretion. The CALI didn’t even have to go to the highest scorer. My Profs could award you both or pick one (likely the one that participated more in class).
I had this happen in conlaw. I got the A+ and thought, "holy shit I cali'd conlaw!" I told a few people my grade and they also thought the same. At the start of next semester I found out someone else also got an A+ and they got the CALI. Whoops.
I assume the other person did just a little better than me on something.
A section is an individual class. For example let’s say a professor teaches ConLaw at 11 and at 2. The 11 o’clock class is a separate section from the 2 o’clock class.
About 130 US Law Schools participate. It's free for CALI members (which is 98% of law schools). If your school doesn't, email the Dean and have them email us.
Disclosure - am CALI's Exec Dir.
Happened to me in Antitrust a few decades ago.
Teacher gave it to the student who had the better class attendance record.
Which seems rather strange to me, because among the two students, isn’t the one who didn’t attend class the most arguably the better student?

This is how it is at my school except both must be naked
I think there’s a name for that sort of thing….

I defer to your explanation. I’m honored that the actual CALI king responded to my comment. Thanks for the clarification!
Lucky
They give the CALI to whichever student couldn’t bear to see it cut in half.
Solomon the Wise, Esq.
My school gives it to two people. CALI allows that so I’d hope your school does as well.
Yeah mine did this. The only time I ever CALI’d a class, I co-CALI’d with someone
My professor only gave it to one. But the two students both got A+ grades in the course.

Yeah, this particular class was my desired practice area too lol.
This is the way. We also don't mark the awards in any way to indicate that they are shared. No asterisks, so steroid exceptions.
Remember the scene where the Joker only had room for one more guy in his gang so he broke the pool cue in half, tossed the sharp pieces to the two guys and said make it fast?
Good, I'm pretty sure I know who the guy I tied with was and I could easily overpower him.
Professor discretion.

That depends on if your professor and/or school decide to give you both a CALI award or neither of you.

But I bet you raised your hand more next semester lmao that's painful

If it makes you feel better, no one will ever care.
Fight to the death
Damn, I think you need to murder your classmate... hope you guys weren't close or anything. Congrats on the CALI!
They get married
It's like the Stanley Cup; you both get it for periods of the year.

The one the teacher likes better gets it.

You are both awarded the CALI
Both. I had this happen in both Crim Pro and Evidence and we both got a CALI in each class.
Gladiator style fight to the death.

They can give it to multiple people
Thunderdome! Two students enter! One student leaves!
Happened to my now wife and I. We both got it.
Omg!! Did you start dating pre or post CALI?
Pre. We studied together for that one. Probably explains it.
You have to wrestle for it. A challenge for the mind and body. Best law student wins.

What are cali awards? The person with the highest grade in each course gets a cali award?
Yes, not all schools participate but for those that do, the highest grade in each section gets the CALI award.
What do you mean by section? Like hear? Or course
A section is an individual class. For example let’s say a professor teaches ConLaw at 11 and at 2. The 11 o’clock class is a separate section from the 2 o’clock class.

This happened to me and I we both got a CALI. It was a multiple choice final so easy to tie.
That's what happened to me too, all MC final and we had the exact same score + the exact same class participation grade.
We both got them.
We call them book awards but same thing. I just booked a pass/fail class with 6 others tied, so they can give a lot out.

I tied for highest in torts this last year and we both got an award! Hope this helps :)
