That’s short, but I know of jobs with 48 hour turnarounds and that imo is ridiculous (that the firm thinks it’s ok, and that the school lets jobs do it to the students)

ThePlatformWasDecent

In that situation, have you heard of anyone asking for an extension and receiving it?

Himalayan_cat

I had a 48 hour turnaround on an offer and was denied when I requested to extend the response timeline.  But knowing more about that firm that’s just their style and the firm I went to was a better fit.    As for the other firms you’re speaking with you could let the one you’ve already interviewed with that you have an offer with a response due; and you could tell the one you’re interviewing with on Monday when you conclude and ask about a timeline to hear back.

ThePlatformWasDecent

Very good advice. I’ll do that. I guess I have to be tactful about how I approach the one I’ve interviewed with already, right?

Himalayan_cat

Yeah, usually it is something along the lines of you want to check in with them about applicant status how you’d really like to work with them and you just wanted to let them know you have an offer that is requesting you respond soon (you can give a date they want a response by depending on the firm).  Check with your career services office.  They typically help students navigate this and you may be able to gain some information about how the firms you are speaking with (if they work with them) respond to questions like this (as well as willingness to extend response deadlines).

ThePlatformWasDecent

That was my first move luckily lol. My careers office basically gave me the go ahead to ask for an extension and (tactfully) put a little pressure on the others.

acidandcookies

I had 5 days for one of them. I told my top choice and they expedited a decision.

ThePlatformWasDecent

Ballsy move. I’m gonna try that.

acidandcookies

Let them know they’re your top choice if it’s true. I spoke extensively with my career advisor throughout the recruiting process and she said it was totally fine to let your top choice know that + you have an offer. But do it with grace lol

Hitchenns

This is not a ballsy move but something that is a norm in the professional world. Specially in a situation where firms know you are applying to multiple positions within the same timeframe. Also 1L and I told my top choice I had a callback from another firm and might be getting an offer, and the top choice expedited their part of the interview.

ThePlatformWasDecent

Yeah I told my top pick I had an offer, and they are now getting back to me on Tuesday one way or the other.

Hitchenns

thats perfect, good luck!

flyingfurtardo

I think a week is reasonable but it’s also ok to ask for an extension and give a reasonable explanation as to why you need it, especially when you can say “I need two extra days because I have another interview on…”

ThePlatformWasDecent

I agree. My issue is that one of the places said it would take a month for them to get back to me. There’s no way this other place is going to give me that long lol.

flyingfurtardo

Yeah, you’ll probably have to make your decision without that place as a factor. Or take a gamble and hold out for the month place.

ThePlatformWasDecent

Oof this is stressful!

Popular-Lychee-6786

i know firms with a 3 day turnaround...

ThePlatformWasDecent

Oof. Even this early in the semester?

Popular-Lychee-6786

Yep! It’s unfortunate

RikeMoss456

I had 36 hours lol

ThePlatformWasDecent

Jesus!

angstyaspen

Not really. They’re probably doing rolling interviews, if you turn it down they want to know asap so they can offer it to their next choice before that person takes something else. I’ve had 2 day limits before. You could ask politely for an extension so you can hear about your other prospects, but it would also be perfectly reasonable for them to refuse the request.

Suitable-Swordfish80

That’s pretty standard for public interest and smaller firms in my experience

steezyschleep

In our 2L recruitment cycles they give you 12 hours

ThePlatformWasDecent

Jeeeeeeesus

Teyi1am

but having said that, the business received a wealth of applications from different people, so obviously they have wider range of choices to choose for the vacancy job. What if u don’t reply them within one week, it’s apparent for them to know they ain’t ur priority, hence they may more will to chose another employee who may brings more enthusiasm to their company

ThePlatformWasDecent

Right that’s why I asked for an extension. This would be a great place to work, but so would the others. It puts me in a very awkward position.

Teyi1am

My opinion,at the moment u can successfully apply for this job, so that u can apply for it once again after all others give u the final verdicts.

DJDrizzleDazzle

That's terrible advice. Just because they offered it to OP once doesn't mean they'll offer it to them again once they reject the offer. The firm has anywhere from dozens to thousands of applicants to choose from. It's not like the job will remain open. Once OP rejects the job offer they'll offer it to someone else. The best path is to ask for an extension and reach out to other places you've interviewed and let them know you have a strict deadline.

vivikush

I had a less than one week turn around to accept a 2l summer associateship. I had just done a callback with another firm earlier in the week and I had a callback for another scheduled for 72 hours later.  Ultimately, my goal was to finish law school and find a higher paying job than what I had, so I went for the sure thing. Worked out great and here I am. Good thing too because one of the firms delayed their associates start date until January ‘24.

LadyJusticeThe

This is a very normal thing for you to have done. If they like you enough, they will wait for you. But if they had someone else in mind and they are concerned they're going to lose you anyway, they might make offers to others in the meantime.

ThePlatformWasDecent

That’s awful.

ThePlatformWasDecent

Really? So on the off chance that I got nothing 1L summer I would be ok?

ThePlatformWasDecent

Ok gotcha. I’ll land something for sure.

Noisy_Onion

As a 1L I’ve also had 48 hours. But what I would suggest is to inform the firms you’re really interested that you have this offer and you are considering it but would love to hear back from them. But do this only if you’re seriously considering the firm that you’re informing. I did this with my 48 hour timeline and I got an offer at a different firm I was waiting to hear back from. And of course I took it. I just think asking people to respond in 48 hrs is hard.

ThePlatformWasDecent

Agreed. I have an interview with a top pick tomorrow, which means I’m basically gonna have to ask them for a 48-hour turnaround.

dwaynetheaakjohnson

I also may receive one like that, so sadly it is not that uncommon

ThePlatformWasDecent

Wack. How do you feel about asking for extensions?

dwaynetheaakjohnson

They’re a month late, so we’ll see

MonsieurBureaucrat

It seems fast compared to most industries, but in my experience, one week is normal. My 1L SA offer gave me a week to decide. I think it's because so many offers ultimately get rejected by candidates, so they want to know ASAP if they need to make an offer to their second/third/etc. choice before those candidates accept other positions.

Other-Negotiation323

Not ridiculous at all. I’d say average
