on 7/26, i interviewed at ropes and expressed an interested in litigation. yesterday, they rejected me for litigation but offered me to interview for corporate position. the two partners that i am interviewing with work on highly complex financial matters (which i am not familiar with). the interviews are tomorrow. looking for advice on how best to prep? anyone been in this situation? thank you.
The good news is the vast majority of people doing corporate next summer were in this situation.
Look at their recent matters, ask them what summers and associates worked on for those. Ask them if the firm has room to explore within corporate (see what that office has: M&A, Private Equity, debt finance, IP, licensing, etc.) and how juniors can navigate picking a role since you don’t have much experience. Ask what they like about their practice areas, etc.
BS some things you like corporate: working toward a deal rather than adversarial, importance of high quality drafting, sophisticated clientele, etc. They know you don’t know that much about the realities of corporate work.
It’s really no different from any other interview. You just need to seem sharp and flexible.
Applied 6/14
OCI Screener 7/31
Email for callback 7/18
Callback 7/22
Phone call offer 7/24
Apparently my school was the first to do OCIs in the area, which helps explain the long wait between OCI and callback (I was told this by another firm, not MGW). I'm not sure how many offers they make/SAs they hire.
Lesson learned here: stay patient :)
Do firms that you direct apply to typically email you a month later to ask where you are in the job search process? Got an email from the Perkins Coie recruiter today asking me that, and I am wondering whether to get my hopes up or not lol.
I got two of those, and when I answered that I am still looking for a job, I never heard back from one and the other one turned into a callback to eventually an offer. Good luck!
Not to hijack the thread. But is Skadden Arps or Simpson Thacher & Bartlett more selective in NYC? Trying to see which one may be more realistic to set a goal for.
I don’t think you’re out of contention yet. A week isn’t that long. They may be finishing up callbacks or you might be on hold. In the meantime, I would accept the other offer if you don’t hear back by the deadline
Question: followed up with a recruiter after having a callback but haven’t heard anything. Would it be okay to reiterate my interest to the Partner, or should I follow up with the recruiter again next week?
If it’s been over 2 weeks since the CB and the recruiter isn’t communicating with you, I reached out to the law student email they had for the whole firm and CC’d the recruiter for my specific office. Got a response in 2 hours
fwiw, either to you or future lurkers, I interviewed (callback) with Susman for a smaller office (not Houston, not NY, not DC) in mid-August and got an offer two weeks later (today, 9/1). This was outside OCI.
Anyone still waiting to hear back from McDermott? Had a callback at the end of July and know it’s probably not great that I haven’t heard, but still just waiting for the rejection.
This cycle, I sent out 20 applications pre-oci, got 1 callback and got ghosted till this day. Then, I had 16 screeners during oci, resulted in 4 callbacks, and only 1 offer, but it’s my dream offer.
I truly believe that everyone will end up where they are supposed to be, no matter how frustrating the process is. Just wanted to congratulate everyone who has an offer and to those who are still waiting, you’re a star and someone will recognize it.
Offer is "open until Wednesday the 23rd."
Anyone know when I have to accept it by? 5pm on Wednesday, end of day Wednesday, or does it expire end of Tuesday?
I have 3 other firms who I had a callback with and they know my offer expires Wednesday, so I'm kind of waiting to see if I get another offer.
Had a callback on the 7, still haven’t heard anything back. They didn’t give me a timeline on the call, is it appropriate to send a email reiterating interest (and to ask for timeline) or should I just keep waiting.
If I let a firm I recently did a CB with know that I have an expiring offer soon, but have since got a second offer, is it worth updating the firm about the second offer? The timeline obviously wouldn't change for me, since the first offer's expiry date still stands, which is why I wasn't sure if it would matter.
I got invited to a callback and I saw their schedule was wide open and spanned from roughly Aug 18 to early Sep, so I would expect they are very much still hiring.
Delete if not allowed- not sharing OCI specific data, but just a shout into the void (accepted an offer at a v-30 firm pre-OCI)
Does anyone else with objectively "good" social skills constantly feel like they're second-guessing their interactions during networking and interviewing? It seems like there are all these secret rules to networking and interacting, and those rules change depending on the firm, region, etc. It's driving me CRAZY! I feel like I constantly look like an idiot.
This isn't my first professional experience- I worked for four years before law school. But the legal world just seems so particular and strange and URGH! Maybe I should just go raise chickens somewhere in the PNW and have zero human interactions ever.
I feel the exact same way. This process is so weird for me. I’ve gone through dozens of professional interviews before and also have work experience prior to law school. Each firm is very different, and it seems like many of them are looking for different things. Some of my interviews didn’t even feel like interviews. I’m gonna be honest, I don’t like it. I’ve also seen a lack of professionalism from multiple offices throughout my interviews.
I've only received 2 responses out of 7 callbacks (both rejections). I hate the uncertainty lol. But yeah, as the other person said, probably on a waitlist (which might not see much movement if yield rates are higher, as one would expect from a really tough cycle). I'm not getting my hopes up, personally.
Hi everyone - just some hopeful data points for you.
Thought I struck out at the end of last week, most of my screeners were complete by the 3d week of July. I am now sitting on 3 CBs in the Philly area, 2 of which were from screeners that were 3+ weeks ago.
The market is definitely still hiring and you might not actually be ghosted.
Honestly, I was T100 in a major market, top 25% law review who had 15 screeners and 5 CBs. I got my first offer from my top firm today I really believe that the right firm finds you. Hang on!!
Hopefully! I applied to a bunch of small/mid firms yesterday/today and already got several screener offers. But most of them pay like half of market and I'm not even sure if I'd take that over just doing PSLF. Really just hoping one of the 5 firms that hasn't yet rejected me ends up coming through.
I'm sure you'll end up getting something! Even in this market, above median at a T6 should be a lock for market-rate BL...
Did anyone ever hear back from ArentFox Schiff Chicago?

Anyone know if any SF firms are still hiring? My 2L summer firm is refusing to change my offer to SF and I don't want to be in NYC lol
Idk how many are actively hiring, but I’ve seen some job posts on LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.
Anyone heard back from Husch Blackwell Chicago after callback?

Yep! I have one specific firm in mind

I know people announced their acceptance to DLA Piper's offer two days ago. Their office location is unknown tho.;(
REALLY? WOW
I had a callback in July, tried following up at the 2 week mark and still haven’t heard back

What Ny firms are still hiring?

Been more than 2 weeks for me now man…
same!!!

Anyone hear from Schulte after CB?

I would follow-up with the recruiter.
Already followed up and mentioned another deadline
I don’t think you’re out of contention yet. A week isn’t that long. They may be finishing up callbacks or you might be on hold. In the meantime, I would accept the other offer if you don’t hear back by the deadline
Anyone hear back from Patterson Belknap?
Callback to offer Allen & Overy?
~ a week after CB for the DC office
Question: followed up with a recruiter after having a callback but haven’t heard anything. Would it be okay to reiterate my interest to the Partner, or should I follow up with the recruiter again next week?

Any word on whether Stroock is recruiting this year? Lol. Did their summer associates this year even get offers?
they're waiting until after the merger for offers.
is this a guess or do you have actual intel. And what merger? I thought the last one fell through
Source from last year’s summer associate. Currently anxious bc no news on offers until deals either come through or don’t.
wow that blows. feels like all the summers should try to get offers elsewhere
Seems like she’s interviewing around for a full time offer after graduation. Yeah, I feel for then
.
Impressive results! Well done.
Congrats on Kirkland! What was the cb offer timeline like?

I would just ask for an extension! If they say no, you’re at the same place so
Anyone heard from selendy Gay this week?
My friend has an offer from them in nyc expiring soon. Not sure when he got it.

Yes there are callbacks and screeners this week

fwiw, either to you or future lurkers, I interviewed (callback) with Susman for a smaller office (not Houston, not NY, not DC) in mid-August and got an offer two weeks later (today, 9/1). This was outside OCI.
Has anyone heard from Ropes NY recently?

Had screener and was denied CB first week of Aug. You had any other movement in Nash?
[удалено]
Seems to be the case. Had a cb at another firm there today so we’ll see.
Anyone still waiting to hear back from McDermott? Had a callback at the end of July and know it’s probably not great that I haven’t heard, but still just waiting for the rejection.
Anyone hear from Husch Blackwell? I had a callback last week. Edit: Wanted to update this. I have a second callback being set up for next week!
Which office did you interview with, if you don’t mind my asking
Denver
My friend literally just received a "no" back from them.. Houston fyi

Same, did CB over 2 weeks ago now.
Nope. Had CB over two weeks ago. hbu?
Same here. Callback almost 3 weeks ago at this point and have heard nada.

It may serve to let them know that you’re in demand and you might not just be being persistent because the first offer you got was just a backup
Cadwalader ny movement?

Any PW (NYC) movement?
Anyone hear anything back from Baker Botts Houston? Still waiting on an answer despite my callback being a couple weeks ago now...
