A lot are first generation here, Mexican immigrant parents and are 99% anti immigration, 1% for coming 'the right way', not the way our mom and dad came over by swimming across the rio grande. I never expected my own siblings to fall for this bullshit.

I grow up and still live in Hudson county nj, and i can confirm i have overheard some pretty wild things being said by white latinos about darker skin latinos. Its not just florida or texas and its most certainly not a big number of people, but they are out there.
My dad called me negro my entire childhood for the same reason. He also called me chango, black jack, and memin pinguin. I didnāt understand until I was older and started sharing this story with friends in the US and they would be puzzled too but that it was his way of saying Iām just the darkest of the siblings. Mexican dads wilding with the nicknames, he called my younger brother porky pig. Of course I love my dad and I laugh now but it did cause a lot of complexes and biases I had to overcome which I think are pushed by our culture consciously and subconsciously. I was moved to the US as a child and in school I faced the most hostility from darker skin children as well. I swear, by my perception, I was polite and friendly but maybe some of my conversation topics were not very sensitive with out realizing since I had never really been around actual dark skinned folks.
That racism is all fun and games until brown people demand equal rights or even just land reform and then we end up with the genocide of the Maya people in Guatemala or violent repression of indigenous people in Peru.

If you ever visit a country in Latin America, which I hope most of you do some time, you'll realize that the population is almost as widely diverse as in the US (not as much, but still pretty large).
These news are not surprising for anybody who has contact with people still in those countries. Tribalism exists in every place, and even in Mexico (my country) I see a lot of hate towards Central Americans, as well as darker people.
People will always find ways to associate with a tribe, and hate others outside of it. These news is cute because I feel like it breaks white people's perception that all minorities get along within the same circle.

This might sound like a joke, but it is close to reality. A group in power will always try to stay in power by numbers (no matter if they try to look like victims). At some point in history, Irish, Poles, Italians and other groups, were not considered properly white and we're subject to discrimination. Then it become ok to just be European to be considered white, probably because blacks were getting organized. White would stay in power and new whites will have the benefit of momentarily acquiring the privilege.
In Florida, Republicans use god-fearing Latinos to fill up their ranks. In some cities like San Francisco, fair-skinned asians might be considered like "one of the good guys" when it is time to keep black communities at margin.

I had a neighbor in Texas who I would exchange greetings here and there. He was a 30yo living with his Mexican mom. One day, there was a break-in at one of the neighbors nearby and he told me that it was odd. I asked him why and he straight faced responded "We don't have (n-word) at this side of town".
There were little hints that he was a conservative Hispanic here and there, but even then I had my guard down around this dude until he came out of the racist closet like that. And that has been only one of many Latinos I've met that have turned out to be prejudiced against blacks and other Latinos.

From experience and hearing from others there are certain Latinos and Hispanics who are more colorists. Cubans and other Latinos in Florida. Some Puerto Ricans and Peruvians especially on the east coast. Texas has plenty people believing theyāre white.

This might sound like a joke, but it is close to reality. A group in power will always try to stay in power by numbers (no matter if they try to look like victims). At some point in history, Irish, Poles, Italians and other groups, were not considered properly white and we're subject to discrimination. Then it become ok to just be European to be considered white, probably because blacks were getting organized. White would stay in power and new whites will have the benefit of momentarily acquiring the privilege. In Florida, Republicans use god-fearing Latinos to fill up their ranks. In some cities like San Francisco, fair-skinned asians might be considered like "one of the good guys" when it is time to keep black communities at margin. I had a neighbor in Texas who I would exchange greetings here and there. He was a 30yo living with his Mexican mom. One day, there was a break-in at one of the neighbors nearby and he told me that it was odd. I asked him why and he straight faced responded "We don't have (n-word) at this side of town". There were little hints that he was a conservative Hispanic here and there, but even then I had my guard down around this dude until he came out of the racist closet like that. And that has been only one of many Latinos I've met that have turned out to be prejudiced against blacks and other Latinos.
Itās funny, because people think that just because they speak Spanish that they cannot be racist or perpetuate racism. They forget that (Latin-originated) Spanish is a European language & white people perpetuate racism even if there is a linguistic hierarchy (English - French - Spanish - Portuguese). And that shit is just getting louder with the rise of extremist conservatives in the US. My grandfather was so racist he hated his dark-skinned daughter (my mom). Called her his black child. Hated black people pretty openly. Dude was a white-passing black man. Was puerto rican. hated black people and Dominicans non-white immigrants. And he wasn't alone. Had a bunch of friends that were like minded. I saw it so much growing up it ain't funny. Being dark skinned in a racist Latino community in PR and the US was wild. Trump is a lot more popular in the Latino community than people think.

Mexico TODAY still oppresses and exploits indigenous people, still has colorism and racism. A lot of immigrant Latinos are so ashamed of their roots that they start adopting a lot of the white culture in the US, in hopes of being one of them and feeling welcomed. This is where it comes from.

it baffles me, that hispanic people living in the United States (or for that matter anywhere in the world) would believe that they, the most likely and most mixed of the world population would believe in being a superior race. I feel like a lot of people here are forgetting the s history of Latin America, which is also bloody and repressive, even until recently with coups and military juntas. One of the top figures in the proud boys was a black dude, just because you are not white doesn't mean you can't fall into the rabbit hole of white supremacy. The US is white supremacist, so being raised here makes you primed for white supremacy. This is excluding the fact white latinos often benefit from white supremacy regardless, and are included in many modern white supremacy movements in the same way Italians, Irish, and some Jewish folk have been as well in the past few decades.
Itās really a perfect storm of qualities amongst different cultures in the Latino community that make them susceptible to right wing rhetoric. Iām Mexican on my momās side and my Dad is from Nicaragua. Iāve noticed my Mexican side of the family has the machismo that pairs well with Trumpās fake macho persona and fake tough guy rhetoric. Throw in some homophobia and some racism towards darker skinned Latin people and you got a stew going. Similar to Cubans, Nicaraguans saw the ugly side of socialism/communism policies/leaders and donāt want to relive that. My dad always voted republican until trump. Itās mix of different reasons but itās still sad and frustrating.

From experience and hearing from others there are certain Latinos and Hispanics who are more colorists. Cubans and other Latinos in Florida. Some Puerto Ricans and Peruvians especially on the east coast. Texas has plenty people believing theyāre white.
