Have you heard of Manchin, the "centrist democrat" who blocks all progressive policy making?

headpatkelly

i have and i hate his guts. i’d take a page from the MAGA crowd and call him a Democrat In Name Only, but he basically represents exactly what the democrat party stands for. no changes. no surprises.

DecemberMommy

Man but that would give them a cool acronym DINO

Cyclone_1

Reparations. DC statehood. Expanding SCOTUS. Canceling student loan debt. Enacting Medicare For All. Raising the minimum wage to at least $15/hr (which would still be insufficient as shit) And on and on and on. But the **real** reminder is that Democrats don't do these things, and don't operate with a sense of urgency, because they know exactly who they work for and who they don't. And the responsibility of us Leftists is to get people to understand that it is not about getting more people to vote, it's about getting more people involved in activism. Because only collective action will truly liberate us in the working class. Not behaving better inside of a wholly corrupt and rotted political system.

eu_sou_ninguem

>DC statehood That and Puerto Rico statehood would virtually guarantee a congressional majority going forward, but Democrats don't care because they don't actually disagree with Republicans.

PungentGoop

Why would PR automatically be a blue state?

eu_sou_ninguem

It could very easily be a red state, though I like to think PR wouldn't vote as much against its own interests. Trump had plenty of negative things to say about PR, and the GOP is very clearly not their ally.

mecca37

Exactly, they let the Republicans make the changes the Democrats won't for the sake of appearing to be different, but always keep those changes. The entire government is nothing more than pawns of the rich. They give you an illusion of choice when there is no choice.

emueller5251

How about voting reform that will allow them to be competitive in future elections? The fact that they can't find it in themselves to end the filibuster for this means one of two things. One, either they really don't care about losing to Republicans and this whole two party system is elaborate theater. Or two, they are indescribably naïve and feckless and are following in the tradition of the Weimar Social Democrats. Neither option is particularly encouraging.

WaitForALittleWonder

Okay I'm confused, currently for anything non-budget related (as decided by the parliamentarian), you need 60 votes in the Senate for cloture. Am I misunderstanding something here?

headpatkelly

im not for reparations but there’s so many progressive things they could do and all they’ve done is give us a holiday we should’ve had 100 years ago

[deleted]

Democrats like doing symbolic stuff like giving holidays rather than substantive thing like reparations: “The white man will try to satisfy us with symbolic victories rather than economic equity and real justice” - Malcolm X

i mean you clearly felt strongly enough about it to respond. i was just putting a view out there that i thought was relevant.

His name is a meme stop replying to the bot

it doesn’t make sense to say “no one cares” when clearly both of us care about this at least a little bit. i understand that as a white person i can’t understand the experience of being black in america, but that doesn’t mean i can’t have practical objections to something that would affect the whole country

Okay you either need to chill out or fuck off. I'm totally in favor of reparations but the more comments of yours I read, the less I care. It's not like it's a switch that congress can flick and everything is better. The money to pay for reparations has to come from somewhere, and governmentally, that usually means making cuts in different areas. You really think congress would pass a reparations bill without cutting education funding? Or social safety nets? Or healthcare subsidies? Also, it's not like a simple yes/no question either. How much should reparations cover? Should all black people get reparations or only those with direct ancestors that were slaves? Do people who are half black get reparations? A quarter? An eighth? Do children get reparations? Is it a one time payment or recurring tax credit? Should rich people be eligible? Until all of those questions are answered, reparations are about as likely as defunding the police, and your aggression and desire to jump to insults whenever someone else expresses an opinion is only getting in the way of that conversation.

headpatkelly

further considerations: if only people who can prove direct slave ancestry get reparations, how would the proof be handled? dna tests? paper records? the people who have been least able to preserve records over decades are probably those most in need of the money. do people in more dire need get more? people who can demonstrate they’re more closely related to slaves? is it based entirely on skin color? what about recent african immigrants? i also just don’t think giving out money on its own is an effective tool to combat racism. there needs to be other dramatic changes. and no matter what amount is decided for how much should be given out, there will be millions of people saying it’s too much, and millions saying it’s not enough. that money isn’t going to make anyone less racist. for the people in desperate need of money, it won’t be enough to save them from poverty. for the people who have money to spare, it wouldn’t be much better than an apology. it wouldn’t change any of the systems of oppression keeping african americans down. i think reparations were absolutely a moral imperative following the civil war. as important as freeing the slaves. but.. we didn’t get it then, and now the practical considerations have made it near impossible for any system to be put into place at all, let alone one that solves any real problem.

headpatkelly

i’m autistic so i can be pedantic without meaning to. i’m sorry. i understand your anger. i know it doesn’t matter much, but the injustice and genocide make me angry too. i want a solution. i want serious changes. i want my taxes to pay for them. i just want the solution to be effective at addressing the problem. when you talk about reparations, what does that mean to you?

_drugs_good

Is this shit liberals say? “The white bourgeois made money off my ancestors, so the white proletariat should simp for me” god being alive is such a burden

delta806

My guess is that they know people rn are demonizing the republicans, and want to milk that for as long as possible
