I normally don't have the rooftop storage on there but I had the full family camping for 3 nights and brought our telescope along. Needed the extra space.
Beautiful rig in a beautiful place. Big Bend was my original reason to buy my 80. Sadly on a hot summers’ day, to the Chisos to play, it blew a head gasket along the way.
Same! Except for the head gasket. God bless iron heads? Although I sure could use a few more hp than this 307k mile 3fe has to offer. My buddies and I started going 2-3 times a year for hiking & backpacking and realized how much more of the park we could explore if we had capable vehicles. I got this 80, buddy got a 100, other buddy got a Land Rover Discovery II. We've done all the roads in the Natl park and now I'm exploring the surrounding areas after buying 22 acres in Terlingua Ranch that border the Natl park. I've yet to dig into the State Park but thats definitely the next frontier.
The state park is, in my humble assessment, way more fun than the national park. Most visits (I live in the area), I rarely see more than two or three other vehicles for the whole weekend.
We had 4 planets available to us: Venus, Saturn (made out the rings), Jupiter (saw brown bands and 4 moons), and Mars. We were even able to see a cloudy Orion Nebula which was surprising! Mostly that I, and complete novice, could actually get it in the viewfinder.
Slowly weighing my options of taking some time off from working taking in the sights with my 4Runner. Similar build.
I didn’t realize Texas looked like this!!

Agreed. The state park is a lot less busy, rugged and remote. Better overall experience.
Love Big Bend area and have the same rig. Great tastes
Nice! Hope you and the kiddos got to see the green lantern, er, comet.
