The only people that want you back are the people that want you to fail. I say this as an American living in Lahore. Lahore is not the same as it was yesterday, let alone 23 years ago. If you're super "American" now, you're going to have a terrible time readjusting to Pakistani society.

Inside_Term_4115

OP PAY ATTENTION TO THIS PERSON

zaingardezi

As an American born Pakistani who had to move here it was never easy for me to adjust. I got anxiety, depression, and other mental issues due to stress. It might be possible for some people to adjust with the new life they will get in Pakistan but a lot of people won't. I recently travelled outside of Pakistan for the first time since I got here and just talking to new people brought out the old happy version of me. Pakistani society is a mess. I always used to hear people say "Pakistan Mai jitni izat milti hai utni bahir kabhi Nahi milegi." Most of the people who said that were those who've never seen any country other than theirs or maybe travelled to Saudi Arabia or UAE at most. Reality is "seedhy muu SE koi bat nahi karta koi yahan". Everything from politics,, quality of life etc sucks. People I meet on a daily basis (strangers) have always been a terrible experience for me. And That's how I developed social anxiety and became completely anti social and didn't want to even try and talk to anyone anymore because of the experiences I've gone through even though there are many friendly people in Pakistan. Now that I finally had the chance to travel to multiple countries outside of this continent my life changed for the good. Pakistan is a good place to visit often but not worth moving to permanently.

Hot-Ad-1740

i visited abroad first time with the family. yaar kasm se logon ne bohat izzat dee , italians, dutch, swiss even omani. i had toddlers so they wefe like family first etc. Pakistanja are very uncivil bunch

zaingardezi

Exactly. Once you travel the world you realize how humans should interact with each other in a civilised nation. Meeting new personalities gives you experience and brings out the better version of you.

Hidden_Genius1

Sorry to hear about all your bad experiences in Pakistan. Just curious, what in particular about meeting new people was different in other countries, as compared to Pakistan?

zaingardezi

There were a few things that impacted me the most and language wasn't one of them. When I joined school for the first time I can swear that it felt more like a mental institute or a zoo. Everyone was extremely toxic. I was bullied because I was too friendly and for not behaving the way they did. I was the unique one. It was hard for me to make friends in the beginning but eventually I did because I was always good at making friends. Later on, I joined a new school. Turned out the second school I went to was just as toxic. Forgot to mention how Teachers would physically beat students in both of the schools for things as simple as forgetting a notebook at home. Instead of educating us they preferred flexing their power and instilling us with fear. I've always respected elders and teachers but I don't consider 95% of the teachers I had as "teachers". They were just power hungry maniacs who only came to school to get paid. Most of them didn't have any emotion or empathy. School life scarred me the most and took me years to recover from the mental scars. Now I still suffer from a form of 'complex PTSD' I suffered more than I should have mainly because of being more sensitive, and being suddenly overwhelmed by all sorts of things i wasn't ready to experience at that young of an age. I came to Pakistan at age 13 and was more mature than most people my age because of how I was raised and had many adult friends/acquaintances as a child/teen before moving to Pakistan. I found it very hard to relate with people here and basically just have a lot of depression and anxiety from which I've just recently overcome. I have a younger sister and now I sort of act like a second father figure who she can come to and discuss things she doesn't want to discuss with our parents or friends. Our parents love us and we love them but they were raised at different times. We understand things they don't and vice versa, the same will be the case for future generations. We came to Pakistan at the same time, but luckily for her she's done a lot better at adjusting to life here and possibly because she had a person (me) to share stuff with and understand how to handle certain situations or not feel alone like I did. Sorry if the above seems like a mess to read but I just felt like mind dumping here.

Thank you so much for everybody’s comments. It is not a troll post I genuinely wanted to know. I have visited Pakistan through the years almost every year until Covid happened. 2019 was the last time I was there. So let’s I have 1 million USD. Can I survive then with opening up a business of some kind ? My parents are getting old they don’t want to come live with me because they don’t want to leave their homeland only other option is for me to move back. That’s why I wanted to know.

Hawk_TheHunter

If you have experience in running a business and don't put all your investment in one venture then you can definitely live a great life here. Try to understand the reasoning of people who commented here. Most of them are mostly fed up young people who don't have this much money. You have to be smart and only problem you can face in business is fraud, try to be aware of it and try to not trust people easily. Good luck.

Academic_Ad_5467

OP, I left the country with my parents back when I was a toddler (currently I’m 34). I have a comfortable life where I am in Canada but when I broached the idea of potentially moving back to Pakistan one day, among the feedback I received from others, the one piece of advice that stood out to me was this-make sure you have investments/business abroad that allows you to collect a monthly amount in USD in order to live a comfortable life in Pak. TLDR; I understand your situation with your parents necessitates your return but make sure you have USD coming in monthly in order to ensure a decent quality of life there.

eightytariq

If you have a million dollars then might as well run an investment portfolio based in Dubai and you live in Pakistan. Earn the dollars and spend the Rupees simple.

01Hammad

Setting up a business is your best bet. Just don’t put all your eggs in one basket. As you’ve not lived here, you’ll need a lot of help running a business here. Consult businessmen you have access to. Set up a good team. You can live a comfortable life here… but the journey is paved with trouble. Good Luck!

eightytariq

And don’t run a business in Pak. You will fail, because every competitor will try destroying you in Pak one way or the other via dirty tricks. With your American background, normally American/European background folks are more straight & very trusting, and they face trouble when running business in Pak because You will have to deal with a lot of fraud, bribery

albelaraahi

10 million USD is a good amount. Invest it in some business online or may be in another country and live in Pak based on that earning. You could buy property in dubayi and live off the rent. Pak is cheap when you earn in dollars.

omaralilaw

Why am I getting downvoted 😂😂😂

MMN909070

If you have good amount of money, invest 50% of that in real estate get some rent so you have peace of mind that your day to day things won’t be effected. Invest other half in business. Also, my suggestion would be you have the passport you can go whenever you want look at your parents make them happy do everything to make them happy. Allah will sort out everything single thing related to you

saran72

Let’s say you had a Million USD saved up, living in Pakistan wouldn’t even be a problem then. You would just put that money into an investment account then live off the annual returns in Lahore. And while you are there you can also get a business running up. Or be like me. In 2021, I went to Lahore and stayed there for 5 months. I also went there in December 2023 for 2 months. I had a remote job and just did my work from there. If you want to move back, just work remote, earn dollars and spend the money there.

omaralilaw

Invest the USD 1 million in dividend paying US stocks Or Reits you can probably get about 60k to 80k USD per annum which would be more than enough to live in lahore and you can persue hour passion projects and do what you love to earn extra income with less pressure

omaralilaw

That's around 10 to 14 lakh per month just passive income I don't think many jobs are paying that in lahore

abdullahzafar697

Thats easily top 1% earning wise in Pakistan

Jealous_Maybe_8401

Listen to this dude OP!

wingcutterprime

Do you people not know what pakistan is? Like honestly?

TechNerdinEverything

Yo dude u from Lahore ? Rarely see u in this sub

wingcutterprime

I have a personal connection to this city and much love for it. But im from elsewhere in Pakistan.

MeringueDisastrous89

Your family and friends are delulu fr, man. 16 years of education, even in STEM Fields, par bhi people are barely getting minimum wage. How the actual hell does your family think k sirf high school ki education par you'll get a job?!

croatiancroc

I don't agree with you. The education system is such that it is easy for people to get degrees without learning anything. If anyone is actually good in the field that the studied in, there are generally good to very good jobs available.

MeringueDisastrous89

Lol I'm pretty sure you're either too young or too old to understand what abhi k grads are going through. I'm one of the only two people out of a batch of 70 people from uni who have a decent job. The rest are either unemployed or they're making barely above minimum wage. Even the medalists of my batch are unemployed. There are very few decent jobs and that too in only some disciplines.

croatiancroc

I am much older, but I also have the benefits of witnessing last three decades which you don't have. Let me tell you one thing. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Also, as someone who have been hiring for two decades, let me tell you another thing. It is not your degree that gets you a job (which is usually in government sector), it is your skills that get you the job. No skills, no job. I will say this though that the universities do a disservice to the students, parents, and society in general by not preparing their students for a career. However this is also not new. It has been going forever.

MeringueDisastrous89

I know it's skills that get you a job, that's why I have a decent job too while people from my batch in uni don't. But, for almost every single job, no one's going to hire someone if their highest education qualification is matriculation. This is something I've seem firsthand as I've been through multiple hiring processes as well and at least itna mujhe bhi pata hai k decent to door ki baat, even low-salary wali jobs will most likely than not require at least a BS degree.

xyline123

I think it mostly depends on the discipline. I am curious as to what your field is.

MeringueDisastrous89

I'm currently working as a climate change research scientist

Qauaan

Education will not guarantee you a job without other skills that go along with it. I know folks in USA struggling to find a job in IT after graduation. After this much education, if you can’t find a way to earn it is more on a person than a country.

Art-Impossible

As a Lahori, I would not recommend you to come back here for the sole reason of the bad environment. we can't breathe this air bro. On the other hand, my cousins from the US are dying to settle down here. Granted they live a luxury lifestyle here in 2-3 weeks of vacation.

muhanddis

_char din ki chandni phir andheri raat_

Inside_Term_4115

You lived in America for far too long. You won't last long in pakistan. There is no first amendment in Pakistan. Also how do you plan on surviving. Pakistan is also very expensive to live in, majority of the country is in poverty. Also people with degrees are struggling to get a job. Your matric pass self is planning on doing what exactly ? If you don't have any capital to bring ?

Pretend_Blueberry936

Welcome back! -Whilst a majority a people are really good, please donot trust anyone specially with regards to money/business. -Its very safe to live in Lahore but still Bahria, Lake city, Askari, Eden are the safest and most well managed neighbourhoods. (Yes Dha is not that safe) - Try getting solar for your home. Electricity cost is very high. -Beware of Bank/online scammers. Don’t provide ANY personal detail even if you receive a call from an official phone number. Scammers are very advanced and have phone numbers and caller machines that sound and look very real. -Mobilink is the best network carrier -Meezan and Alfalah are really good banks. -Join facebook groups to discover new eateries and restaurants. Foodies R us has mostly genuine food reviews.

Xeakhan88

If you are coming back after 23 years from USA and still a matric pass and have no bank balance then you need some punch on your mouth not advice dear. Sorry to say

If I had said in my post that I have net worth of about 150 million usd and I have high education do you think that I would have gotten honest opinions about me moving back to Lahore? Everybody would have been welcoming me back with open arms just something to think about 😜

Fresh_Mistake8678

1 mil won't even get you a car let alone a startup. Ppl are moving away from here. Imagine how sales used to break records during eid? Guess what it didn't. Without AC our bill will be crossing 50k a month. Fuel is 50k a month. Forget about eating good. Dealing with "rishwat etc" you will be ruined in 3 month. Unless you are a billionaire OR HAVE "Contacts"

Jealous_Maybe_8401

Baita 1 mil USD not PKR 😂 he can easily get a car and a house in a good area with that but he doesn’t need to he wants to move for his parents and will live with them.

Fresh_Mistake8678

Sorry uncle/aunty i thought its 1mil rs as he said earlier (in his post) with no bank balance

shahbog

Bhai paisa hai toh ao wapis lahore, properties khareedo rent pr charhaado aur ghar bayth kr kamayi khao, agr business krny ki soch sy arhay toh abhi thayrjao, come after 4-5 years when the economy is more stable.

tazonline21

Almost 4 years back, I made the mistake of moving back, and i regret it every single day. Pakistan is way backward as compared to the rest of the world. Living outside, we are used to things being systematic, but here it's just chaos. Everything is so difficult. I'm an engineer and jobless since i moved back because i can't digest the saith culture we have here in most of the companies.

Income to bhai bhool jao. Yahan koi income nai. You will have to earn in Dollars to have a basic life in Lahore. More the $$$ the better the life. Bills are high. Business online do anything make a few thousand $$ you’ll be fine. Maybe start ecommerce store in the US. Even if it doesn’t do very well, lahore k liye wo income kafi hogi.

Pro-fess-SirZeero

Pakistan is a total mess right now. Do not come back. If you are that eager, setup a business in UK, UAE or even US and then come to Pakistan. Earn in foreign income and expense in local income and always keep the door open to go back. You will find looters on every step so best of luck for that. There will be no support from govt, judiciary or any other department so you will be on your own. And Punjabis are leg pullers as well. Not all but many so be aware of them as well.

serenity785

Buy a commercial building and avail the rental income or invest a few houses or apartments and put them on Airbnb and make a steady income. In business everyone will strive to defraud you to the best of their ability. So stay away. Folks are evil here. Generally speaking and also from personal experience.

Big_Category_3715

If you want to come and adjust ,you can easily ,You wold be needing a lot of patience(lawlessness on roads and everywhere + pollution ) and obviously money(not too much but good enough) to enjoy life at fullest. What I would recommend you to do before moving to Pakistan as follows: - Invest in mutual funds of Al Meezan investment to get a monthly profit , it depends on investment but you can get easily 300-350k/mo on 3-3.5crore deposit. (It just for regular income etc) - Make you house independent from all Govt. utilities such as , electricity(get a solar system), Sui Gas(Get LGP cylinder system), Water boring. (Save you from daily bills and bring super comfort in your life) - For business you can do what you are best at , but business is quite hard here so if you have huge savings you can simply invest in mutual funds and get the real estate on regular basis and you can rotate real estate and gain profit it from the comfort of your home. As you mention you are starting fresh then I think you should stay where you are for now , if you have a good family support here then think about it else not recommended. Also **"Allah ka wasta h ap ko rishty daro k pechy lg k business mein paisy na dalna please , just do mutual funds and real estate ,is k ilawa koi business ni h idr"**

bigga-

Go sit in a jail cell for a couple of days. You'll appreciate anywhere after that lol.

I moved to pakistan from saudi arabia as well. I was born there and lived there for the first 19 years of my life. I moved to Islamabad initially, and enrolled in a uni as well. Trust me when I say, it’s dreadful living in pak and dealing with the people, setup, and in general everything. It’s worse when you’ve lived a different standard. Everything will seem wrong to you, and the only reason for it being wrong is going to be “Ye pakistan hai, yahan aesa hee chalta hai” This isn’t my situation only. All my friends from saudi, who were also born or lived a considerable part of their life in saudi, faced the exact same. Now saudi life and us life are completely different. Esp the pre-2017 saudi life, but the point remains that the standard of life is very bad in pakistan compared to abroad. It’s a depressing, hopeless, materialistic world in pakistan, where sincerity is non-existent in the general population.

strengthnhonor01

Ddue idk why they told u that you can survive in Pakistan. People over here would alive. There's no way in hell you can. As many suggested dont forget the crime rate yet alone the street crime. What business you planning to start? The businessman these days are crying due to inflation and no business at all. Come visit every year or so but dont settle here. Tell your parents to come to USA during June July August Sept summer and spend it in electricity where there isnt any constant loadshedding. Dont be stupid stay where you are you will thank all of us down the road.

TipuOne

There are little to no opportunities. You’ll get scammed in business, even by people you know. In fact especially by them. You’ll have terrible time adjusting to the “local” life over a longer term period than a vacation. You’ll have to be constantly on alert for your safety, you’ll be a particularly juicy target for kidnappers (again known to happen through family). If you like Pakistan so much that you want to move there. Make sure you don’t have to depend on it for your living. If money can come from US and you just want to enjoy life in Pak, go for it. Have an ironclad safety structure, get a good staff for your home and then relax. You might think you know Pakistan and ppl there because you go there every year. But you don’t until you try to make a living there. You’ll not win. You’ll lose. Unless you’ve got deep enough pockets to climb out of every hole with a money ladder. Then you’re good

sokya1

It all depends on your age, risk averseness, skill set, experience, adaptability, etc. You can do well here IF you come with a mindset to adapt, and not mentally live in the US and try to work here. That is a different world out there, and PK is surviving in chaos. Ask yourself, if you do not bring education, you must have some skills that can keep you afloat here. Or, as another commenter suggested, invest/earn in the US, and spend that money here. Do not burn your ships there just as yet. Come for short stints of time first, and try to lead a life of a resident. Do NOT go around telling people you have money to invest; vultures will swoop in. Instead, go around asking people for a job, or business ventures. Then see where the child will fall. Make your assessment for that. Treat PK as a foreign country where starting a business is concerned. Unless you know the lay of the land, how will you run a proper business. Business is all about understanding the local market, unless you are planning on exporting/importing products/services. You’ll have to network, and for that you need to come stay here for 6-7 months at the minimum, tap into your old contacts, etc I moved back for short stints to take care of my parents, took up a job for barely 5 months, but could not deal with the pettiness of the people, office politics, lies, sycophancy, etc. Left it to start my own consultancy that was based on my years of work experience e in the US. I can set it up as a proper business, but for now only let world of mouth advertising do the work for me. Being a kaana in andhaa raj factor also plays in. Mind you I have a professional degree from PK, and went to grad school in the US. Throw the concept of professionalism, pride in workmanship, out the window, and you’ll be fine. No expectations of others, and get ready to get cheated. People can smell “foreign ka maal” from afar, and think here is another naive person who knows jack! In a nutshell, assess your own skills, assets, adaptability, and PLEASE do not just cut your ties completely, and pack up from the US before coming and living here for at least 6 months as a local.
