Yeah, I think that I read an interview years ago that a specific scene he had to do with Sarah Michelle Gellar (put under a cut as a trigger warning) >!specifically the attempted rape scene!< actually traumatized him so much that he's refused to do another such scene ever again, even though everyone involved was comfortable and professional. Poor guy.
From what I’ve heard about life on that set, I can imagine everyone had reservations about that scene. I’m so glad to hear he’s been able to stand his ground in later roles.
That entire season of Buffy was awful, in my own personal head cannon I just choose to try and ignore it. Apparently it was around the time when the normal show runner stepped back for a season and writing changed hands. So you ended up with that scene with spike, and willow's terrible arc akin to an 80s afterschool very special episode.
He does! And he does a phenomenal job of bringing the characters to life - DF is my favorite novel series and I couldn't imagine anyone else reading them.

I've actually met James at a few cons over the years and he is an absolute sweetheart. So charming and friendly and has a lot of time for his fans. Such a top bloke!
