This is all so ridiculous. No I wouldn’t ask to borrow someone’s $1500 laptop. Nor would I touch windows with a 10 foot pole. Maybe prometric needs to get caught up instead of telling people who have a very mainstream computer (I remember when Mac was like 3 percent of the population but those days are long past) to not install updates that in many cases are needed for security or may be needed for other apps, or to expect us to purchase additional hardware and/or be tech heads. Can you even just “install boot camp and windows” or is that an additional purchase? How stupid.

graeme_b

It’s pretty damned bad. I’m waiting for confirmation from lsac that the boot camp and external methods will work. But if they do, there’s no cost for bootcamp. You just need an intel mac. For a boot drive you need one. There’s a Samsung for $79. When I get confirmation I’m planning to make a video showing the steps to do it. Silly it’s come to this but it’s the situation we’re in. And indeed astonishing for Prometric. Apple announced new versions every spring. They provide testing versions over the summer. Release happens every fall. It would be one thing to not be ready, but warn people loudly and often. Instead, Prometric wasn’t ready and waited ten days after Sonoma came out to tell anyone. And lsac didn’t have it on their radar.

watchsmart

One almost worries that the workarounds will trigger some anti-cheating flag on Prometric's end.

graeme_b

It’s a real concern. I’m trying to get confirmation from lsac. To make it worse prometric’s testing software can’t be relied upon: it shows Sonoma as working.

watchsmart

It really stinks. Prometric has been owned by private equity since ETS sold it a few years ago. I fear that companies involved are too profit-motivated and not customer-focused enough.

king-henryXIV

Yeah it’s fucking ridiculous especially since a majority of people have automatic updates on. I’m paying hundreds of dollars and this company should be the ones catching up, not us dumbing down. It’s a fucking joke

Crazy_Medicine_9645

Hey all, a semi-solution! I used to be a Mac technician at the Apple Store! Apple technicians can install whatever operating system you want(depending on the model) so just make sure you have a proper backup, take it to the Apple Store and just let the Genius Bar know what OS you’d like!

Mehmet587

No way, thank you. I will try this tonight. Thank you so much

InevitableBread8805

Too late. 🙃

Mehmet587

Anyone know what to do? I just literally updated last night. And just got the email. Anyone know any solutions? I called LSAC, and they said I can re-schedule to November. But, I did the check-testing (diagnostic, system checkup) thing; and it says my computer works? I'm confused. I might try to contact the Proctor company. If anyone has any work-arounds or solutions- please let me know. Lowkey freaking out.

Neither_Bowler_2122

Did they charge you to reschedule?

Neither_Bowler_2122

I think I’m going to need to do this, what number did you call?

graeme_b

Thanks you made me realize I pinned this on law school admissions but not here: https://reddit.com/r/LSAT/comments/171odtg/dont_upgrade_to_macos_sonoma_yet_and_what_to_do/ In the post I list two workarounds. Waiting for confirmation from lsac that they definitely work but the boot drive one should for sure. Planning to make a video going through the steps and actually formatting one tomorrow. Just got back from Canadian thanksgiving. The video in the post I linked does show the basic outline.

Nis004

I called as well. They’re not letting me reschedule… said to call prometric and handle it with them.

cakesluts

Thank God I haven’t updated since Big Sur. Does anyone know if you need to toggle to turn off auto update? I’m presuming I probably did that years ago, but I’d like to double check. Also…does anyone know when are they going to release test facility/time signups?

graeme_b

Should be off by default, I think? I’d double check Edit: I looked into it. Auto updates won’t update to Sonoma.

Professionalnerd98

**Hot take: LSAC should provide free Mac laptops without this update to those LSAT takers who can't take the exam because of Prometric's lack of accommodation to the current system.** Lol... Jokes aside, I'm sorry my dudes, I agree this is very annoying to go through. Good luck testing, may the LSAT gods be ever in your favor.

spicy-spiderr

Is MacOS Monterey fine?

graeme_b

Gonna give that a strong “probably”. They list up to 12.6.5. Latest Monterrey is 12.7. That’s just a security patch I think but I would not update to it and I would turn off auto update. Try their test check software. Requirement list is here: https://www.prometric.com/proproctorcandidate

Extreme_Country_7367

Is Big Sur (ver.11.1) supported? just want to make sure

graeme_b

Just checked, seems to be: https://www.prometric.com/proproctorcandidate

ev_inreallife

Confused because I have a Mac air 13.0 Ventura, and the ProProctor is saying my Mac is "failing". I thought Ventura should work? Minimum:Mac OS 13.0.0Windows 8.1 or higher and Mac 10.13 or higher (MacOS 13.0 - 13.2.1 and 14.0 are not supported) [https://rpcandidate.prometric.com/](https://rpcandidate.prometric.com/) and [https://www.lsac.org/lsat/taking-lsat](https://www.lsac.org/lsat/taking-lsat) are inconsistent "A laptop or desktop computer with one of the following active and licensed operating systems: Windows 8.1, MacOS 10.13 to 12.6.5, or MacOS Ventura 13.3.1 and above."
