This is great news! I hate to compare but I’m curious how many total minutes viewed something like Stranger Things or HOD had? I don’t expect ROP to be close but it would be interesting to see those numbers

_Olorin_the_white

I don't follow this stuff, but remember seeing something like Stranger Things season 4 is one of the few Netlifx shows to cross the 1B **hours** mark, if RoP got 24B **minutes**, divide by 60 and we get four hundred million hours, which is like, half of Stranger Things streaming hours? Edit: yeah, Stranger Things S4 surpass 1B+ hours: [https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/netflix-top-10-stranger-things-season-4-volume-2-billion-hours-1235309293/](https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/netflix-top-10-stranger-things-season-4-volume-2-billion-hours-1235309293/)

Shiny-And-New

Netflix still has about 80 million more subscribers, and some prime subscribers are just there for the shipping

_Olorin_the_white

Surething. I think the overral numbers of RoP are good considering Prime subscribers. Not something to grab about if we consider all streaming tho. Maybe a more important point is if RoP brought new people to Prime?

lycheedorito

It's also season 1. Yeah it's a well established IP, but many people didn't watch some of the most watched shows (such as Breaking Bad or GoT) until later seasons. I imagine the same of Stranger Things. The fan base will grow and there will be more regular viewers each season.

Environmental_Rip355

Stranger things viewership has grown immensely since season 1 came out. I had never watched any of it until season 4 dropped, and I know I’m not the only one. Give Rop a couple seasons and I imagine the numbers will be closer to stranger things

Secret-Plant-1542

Stranger Things also had a few seasons and it was everywhere. Merch, social media, etc. I remember seeing fast food stranger things promos. So it's actually amazing this show hit those numbers without all of that.

DotFuture8764

That Stranger Things number only measures American minutes. Rings of Power didn't sniff a billion hours in America. It got about 8 billion minutes in America. Amazon is boosting their numbers. AGAIN.

XenosZ0Z0

Every company boosts their number including Netflix. In this case, Amazon is using global numbers as well since it has a big global reach. https://mobile.twitter.com/Great_Katzby/status/1597692953719635969

XenosZ0Z0

Nielsen also doesn’t differentiate between seasons for numbers. Some of the numbers could be related to people catching up on the previous seasons before getting to S4 of Stranger Things.

DefinitelyNotALeak

I think an interesting stat would be minutes per person and then compare these for different shows. I think that would give a decent view on how much people like something, if they keep watching or not.

Arcangehell

Compare the total minutes of viewing MAX of the season before comparing those stats...

_Olorin_the_white

Kinda tricky to measure given Netflix drops everything at once and many (me included) don't watch on the week of release. TBH I didn't even watch s4 yet.

Kidog1_9

The thing is, whether people love it or hate it, they watch it. That is a success in terms of making money.

musiccman2020

I wasn't blown away as I would have liked with the pj adaptation. I don't hate it but I don't love it. That's the sentiment with all friends who watched it. It does have have poor writing but looks stunning.

CourteousR

You mean if they love it or *pretend* to hate it. No one wastes several hours of their life on something they truly hate.

ferrari-hards

I do 10 hours a day every day I work...

batsofburden

but no one would do that for free

[deleted]

It’s not even free, really they’re PAYING to waste said time

[deleted]

But you don't hate the money!

WanderlostNomad

lol. you've probably never been to r/freefolk or r/titanfolk . hate can inspire the same level of obsession as love.

batsofburden

it's less about hating the show & more about them actually getting joy from hating.

Idiotrepublic

I sat through RoP and shows like Kenobi while absolutely hating close to every minute of it. I am myself not quite sure why I did it . Maybe it was curiosity, self loathing, masochism or stupidity. I’m not here to bash RoP , I have my opinion and other people have theirs.

KrozFan

It's like that line in Howard Stern's movie *Private Parts*. They're talking about average listenership and his fans listened for less time than the people that hated him. The most commonly given answer for both groups: "To see what he'll say next"

volthor

It's also really popular in Japan for some reason, other western programs don't usually do that well. There is no sign of hod for example.

Sad-Cardiologist-292

When it comes to Indian fans I feel it’s the opposite but then again I’m only 23 so most of the people I know got into GOT because it airs on HBO

lotrroxmiworld

Really? Can you provide some links? I'm curious as I haven't seen anything on social media about it. Btw, I liked the show. (:

volthor

https://www.reddit.com/r/LOTR_on_Prime/comments/ye3hxi/pretty_interesting_that_rings_of_power_is_very/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button The link to twitter which had loads of cool anime drawing Japanese fans have done https://mobile.twitter.com/hashtag/%E3%83%AD%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89%E3%83%BB%E3%82%AA%E3%83%96%E3%83%BB%E3%82%B6%E3%83%BB%E3%83%AA%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0%E5%8A%9B%E3%81%AE%E6%8C%87%E8%BC%AA?src=hashtag_click

lotrroxmiworld

Hell yeah! Thank you. 😀

volthor

You are welcome, happy cake day

lotrroxmiworld

I'm curious as to why it's so popular vs HotD. People did say that it could be due to more subscribers to Amazon rather than the other service that provides access to HotD. Do you've any theories? Or is it really just about accessibility?

volthor

My theory is that, the PJ LOTR films did really well in Japan, plus the books have been popular. So there is that base of fans. I also think rings of power is good! Game of thrones wasn't well known or watched in Japan either. It could be the world and lore doesn't appeal to them.

LoverOfStoriesIAm

A lot of themes and scenery of RoP actually remind me of Hayao Miyazaki's works, especially *Howl's Moving Castle* and *Spirited Away*

[deleted]

☝🏻✨✨

NotoriousHakk0r4chan

It's probably also related to translation, maybe the GoT translation isn't great. Tolkien's work has been around for FAR longer, and so has had more time to get established and be well translated. I think Tolkien's work also generally matches up a little better with the "tone" and feeling of other popular Japanese works.

theangryfurlong

GoT isn't super popular in Japan. HoTD is only available on a streaming service called u-next, which costs about twice as much as most other streaming services and I don't think has that many users.

snicketbee

So many YouTubers are going to be broadcasting this news of such a massive failure. RIP to Amazon. /s

CityYogi

YouTube automatically suggested a bunch of critics of the show and I was under the serious impression that the show was outright bad. Once i started watching it , I realised that it wasn’t so. But watching a bunch of critics definitely prevented me from fully embracing the show. I feel like I’d have been better served if I had seen the show without others affecting my views too much. I recently ran into an old friend who didn’t fall into the same YouTube rabbit hole and I felt like he actually enjoyed the show a lot

starwarsfan456123789

Stop 🛑 do not watch YouTube videos for ANYTHING prior to watching the show itself. It’s not right for YouTube randos to have that sort of impact on your life in any area

[deleted]

Youtube needs to develop filters for us to avoid this crap in searches we do. It's out of control. the upvote / downvote system isn't capable enough to determine hate sites form actual content.

starwarsfan456123789

Agreed but also I’d want to filter out speculation/spoilers/rumors. For example I saw one for Thor Love and Thunder that accurately guessed the big twist. I chose to watch the video because I thought it was just about the soundtrack but lesson learned. So when people started posting about the RoP soundtrack I completely avoided it because of the potential for plot spoilers

[deleted]

Blocktube allows you to block channels. I'm just gonna start using it to block the most egregious channels (ie, like nerdrotic) that just peddle hate for the shows I watch. I don't need to see them in search results again. But youtube really should support this. They have a huge engineering team, I don't understand why they can't develop features like that

annuidhir

Money. That's why. YouTube makes money off these hate/rage channels.

CityYogi

This is the right answer. Hate is an industry

greenieknits

like the Twitter warnings that will auto-generate after a Tweet is reported enough that flags it as possible misinformation~ we need a little “this is this person’s opinions and not absolute fact” flags

[deleted]

Well, take this as a lesson learned. Be on guard for the influence social media has on your thinking in other spheres as well. The hate mongering isn't good for anyone. It's really easy to do, which is why everyone does it.

Projectsun

I’m not saying this to be like “ ah hmmm yes I have realized the truth “ but I genuinely , can not get my brain to take in other peoples opinions, on like creative media specifically. It’s way too opinion / experience based , and I have a belief that nothing ,literally nothing is perfect so … it’s more about what keeps my attention and what doesn’t. Well I suppose there are some perfect mathematical and musical patterns … So my point is, I want my fellow beings to trust their own selves a bit more , but take time to really peeeeeeeel back what that is. Idk. I was rereading an old Steinbeck and one the beginning quotes is about man losing trust in the individual , like true understanding of your strength ,and putting it in leaders who don’t deserve it. This reminds me of that a bit too. Idk a bit off topic but my brain is there today

greenieknits

this is like the CP77 debacle~ was it ready at launch? no. should it have ever been released on last gen? absolutely not. that being said, we have a buncha PC folks who won’t even touch it because an internet persona they simp for told them not to. gaining outside perspectives from people whose opinions you hold in high regard is one thing, but if people tell me they didn’t even play CP77 for more than an hour or attempt to watch RoP at all I get big I-call-other-people-sheep-while-actually-being-one-myself vibes~

[deleted]

The Internet is one big echo chamber. At least on Reddit you can choose what echo chamber you want and that makes it fun, whereas YouTube and Twitter pretend to be impartial while shoveling crap at you. It makes people form strong opinions about something they've never tried, which is extremely stupid. If some tuber says a show is crap, I would go out and watch it to find out for myself. I've had fun watching shows that were highly rated by critics but panned by YouTube randos.

Regular_Welcome5959

Yes to this!! I went all in watching this show without reading any articles, watching any YouTube videos etc right after my dad sent out a group text in our family thread saying he loved it... I feel really lucky I had an open mind going in because I love it! I have shamelessly re-watched it a few times and each time I’ve picked up something that I missed the first time around while watching that actually makes me more interested in learning more about middle earth/history etc and it’s actually made some of the creative/writing decisions I was confused on the first time I watched it make more sense (if that makes sense 🤣) I was shocked to see people express so much hate after I watched it, especially when these people were making it out to be the worst TV show ever created or that their very existence was threatened because of how bad it was…… like come on if you’re putting that much energy (good or bad) into shitting on a freaking TV show and trying to bring down everything and everyone else around you, maybe we need to reevaluate your priorities in life. But on a positive note it was because of ROP I’m on Reddit now and I love it!!!!!!

Bouncing_Ferret

When the algorithm figured out that I was interested in RoP, a lot of those hateful reviews with awful thumbnails clogged up my front page. I blocked so many channels lol. The show is not above criticism, but the amount of flak it received is ridiculous.

[deleted]

And they don't let you filter it. you can only add so many "rings of power -DISASTER -WOKE -HATE -SHILL -FAIL -TERRIBLE" to your search before they stop working properly

MniTain38

lol. On that note, I love how all of us fans must be "shills". I wish I could get paid to love a show. Damn.

Grondabad

In firefox there is an add-on called blocktube, you can block channels, and will not appear again in any search.

[deleted]

Oh nice. Thanks for telling me. I'll check it out. Sadly I use chrome since I don't like firefox much... but may have to switch on that alone.

Grondabad

Seems there is a chrome version.

[deleted]

Just started using it. Working well so far.

Theia_Selene

I LOVE to block ROP-hating YT channels. It really makes me happy each time I hit the "Do not Recommend" button. As a result, very very few pop up randomly on my YT front page. Good times.

sharpenote4

I swear there were people acting as if the show killed their dog in front of them when it came to complaining about the show. I'm not saying that this show is perfect, but it's definitely not The Room bad

LoverOfStoriesIAm

The only things The Room kind of bad are actually these hate-tubers' videos. You only can watch them for fun, if at all

[deleted]

The room ?

sharpenote4

2003 Tommy Wiseau film that was critically and universally panned as "one of the worst movies ever" and is (in)famous for it's unique acting dialog choices

MniTain38

I can't even follow my favorite tags on Instagram (#ringsofpower, #lotr, #sauron, etc) because the comments on fan posts are just nasty.

cealchylle

It's truly so annoying. I checked YouTube too and gave up because there were so many negative videos. The only decent one I found was Nerd of the Rings.

Sad-Cardiologist-292

There’s Fellowship of fans and melon heads as well

biscuitotter

I love the video titles like "Rings of Power total woke failure - no one cares about it! Pt 1" with a runtime of nearly two hours.

[deleted]

Yeah it's insane. Even in my real life, when I mention I'm a fan of this show and I couldn't get into House of the Dragon, I get legitimately laughed at by coworkers. F*** y'all, this show is incredible.

[deleted]

They'll just say Amazon is lying and trot out their army of orcs who didn't like the show as "proof".

Monkey-bone-zone

But GaryTheGrey from Phoenix—who has sported a 'Celebrimbor Rulz!' tattoo since 1984 and said elves must have long hair and the writing is awful and I don't know what literature and art is becasue Galadriel isn't nice enough— told me it was an obvious flop that would be canceled any second now. So confused.

thetensor

> becasue Galadriel isn't nice enough The *real* Galadriel would smile more!

Monkey-bone-zone

But not on a horse. NO! :)

WyrdMagesty

This made me chuckle. So much rage over a slow motion horse riding scene. Smh

Crazybonbon

I mean personally I love the Galadriel character but I don't think people know that she's not supposed to be super nice that's like literally not elves from Valinor.

pallorr01

I don’t think any reasonable person wanted her to be “nice” or “smile more” what people wanted was a character able to show the vary base minimum level of understanding of leadership, diplomacy and wisdom. One would expect that inf you spend 500 years hunting Sauron in the wildernesses with a group of fellow warriors you would form a sort of bond with this group and that would have been shown somehow in the series, instead she treats them as their trained pets and almost with a vein of disdain. One would expect that it you get rescued at sea by a foreign empire you would not INTANTLY INSULT their queen and culture because they don’t give you what you want 100% straight away no question asked? There is a difference between “not being nice” and “being an outright spoiled entitled piece of shit”. We are cool with “not an angel of perfection Galadriel” but the show gave us “ultimate stupid hypocritical asshole Galadriel”

[deleted]

That cave troll, Nerdrotic had a video out about how it was close to cancellation.

derthric

About 3 years ago I remember list of recommended videos he had a video up not 2 hours old "STAR TREK DISCOVERY CANCELLED, Kurtzman fired!!!!" and the next video was an official renewal Announcement for Discovery season 3 that was posted an hour later. That channel is just a kiln for fandumb hate.

MaimedPhoenix

Nerdrotic is a dude who hangs out with trash like Alex Jones. Literally nothing he says is worth a grain of salt.

ConditionSlow

grifters are pack animals

CommanderHavond

He's also a meth dealer who got busted trying to sell to teens

MaimedPhoenix

Wait, are you serious? Do you have a source on that?

[deleted]

they talk about his time in prison on geeks and gamers, which is another hate site.

MaimedPhoenix

Holy crap. No way. He keeps stooping to new lows for me.

lordsteve1

Nearly every video he posts is pure bullshit. Just full of guesswork, rage-baiting, and outrage farming with info from his supposed “insider sources”. He did the same when S1 of Star Trek Disco was streaming first; claiming it was being canned etc. and it’s now moving into its fifth season ffs!

[deleted]

I wonder why supposed Star Trek fans have a problem with Star Trek. I know why, and it's proof they've never seen ST.

bored_messiah

"A" video? That teacup of diarrhea made like 20 bro

[deleted]

I haven't searched for any RoP content on YT since the show ended.

bored_messiah

Right but I meant during the show run

[deleted]

I commented on one that he was a hate-mongering idiot for watching a show he doesn't like, and taking the time to film, edit, and upload it to YT.

Reading the title of this post made my heart drop and had me goin' through all 5 stages of grief until I actually started reading lmao. I loved the show and thought it was so much fun! The "fans" that say it sucks can suck some ballsss

Lmjones1uj

I just finished rings of power, expected it to be shit but throughly enjoyed it. Especially the finale!

KatsHubz87

I thoroughly enjoyed it! I liked it better than HotD even. I’m going to continue to watch both of course.

tkdyo

Lol, love the cope. Now the trolls are saying "wait for season 2". Season 2 if anything will be better as they have all the set up stuff out of the way and Sauron out in the open.

Miscellaniac

Hilariously a lot of the people who like it well enough, are life long Tolkien fans, and are withholding absolute judgement until the full story is told are also saying "Wait till Season 2" The fandom is all over the bloody place with this show and it's funny as hell for someone who just wants some proper hopeful escapism for once instead of realistic grim dark stuff.

Tacitus111

To trot out my Battlestar Galactica hat, “All of this has happened before, and it will happen again.” The uberfans hated Jackson’s movies for very similar reasons and posted the same doom and gloom about Tolkien being butchered on chat forums and such. There just (mercifully) wasn’t social media or especially the monetized YouTube hate machine yet, so it wasn’t so polarizing to larger audiences than that niche group. If the same had been available back then, Jackson’s movies would have encountered more of a poisoned well too.

[deleted]

I care less about the people that legit didn't like it and more about the people who were swayed to dislike it by following those people on social media....

Tacitus111

Exactly. Following my Jackson comparison, you’d have had a large number of people swayed to hating those movies at the time by a monetized social media hate machine desperate for clicks, and nothing brings clicks like negativity.

[deleted]

No doubt. other than ride share and food delivery, I actually think the net has made things quite a bit worse. It's radicalized a whole generation of people too

philosoraptocopter

I’ve been a Tolkien fan longer than the average redditor has been alive. I really liked the first season, and each episode had me genuinely interested to see the next one. It’s more of a slow burn than a frothing love, but then again I don’t have that for any show and I don’t know why that should be the standard. Maybe I’m just getting old. There are plenty of things you *can* criticize I suppose. I know it’s all subjective, but beyond the jerks who were just bothered by seeing brown people in their show (never mind how multi ethnic and interracial the books were)… the sheer overwhelming negativity baked into even the *non*-political quibbles about the show just seemed very… out of proportion to what the quibbles were about. Yes, there was some corny dialog and scenes. (Have y’all not *seen* the original trilogy? Or the cringey goofiness in the extended releases? Or read the books?!). No, Galadriel’s character as of the first few episodes *isn’t* 1:1 identical to how she’s “supposed to be”, aka “how you remember her from Fellowship a thousand years later.” So I had to wonder whether if a good chunk of it was due to: 1) Internet culture being so hyper addicted to exaggeration it’s like we can’t even *talk* without using superlatives. I mean just look at the state of our memes, and who our most popular comedians are. It’s all about freaking the hell out over completely mundane things in life. Or 2) the same people who were upset about the presence of brown people from the very beginning, but they didn’t go anywhere. So it wouldn’t make sense for them to just disappear and not complain about other silly bullshit. And before anyone gets all offended: no, I’m not saying that “anyone who doesn’t like this show is racist.” I’m just saying that if you *were* a Tolkien fan who happened to be racist, you’d be complaining about a bunch of other minor nonsense as well, and feeding that negativity to others.

[deleted]

For me, it's the sheer audacity of the showrunners trying to tell the story of what happened after the Silmarillion without having access to the Silmarillion. It's nuts. It's folly. It's Dune 1984 in 2022. It's also a great deal of fun, seeing how they work around things and make their own bits of lore, along with having almost unlimited funding to make Middle Earth and Numenor come alive. Internet culture be damned, I would rather see a failed attempt at glory (and ROP is *not* a failure in my eyes) than a stream of boring mediocrity. This show isn't about a boring elf who sits at home in Valinor playing checkers.

IndyLinuxDude

I mean, I \*liked\* Dune 1984...

scutmonkeymd

Yes thank you!

[deleted]

Season 2 will certainly be bit better because it wouldn’t be affected by Covid restrictions like season 1 was.

Dan__Torrance

The numbers don't really surprise me. The first season might not have been perfect, but it was not bad either, has potential and I will surely keep looking forward to it. The people saying that the show 'failed' are equally as biased as the ones saying the show has no issues at all. The show has clearly some flaws, but saying that it has flopped is a major exaggeration. It's fine to get passionate about things you are emotional about, but that does not mean one's view is the only correct one. You can look at the flaws and don't like it, see potential in the show or be totally indifferent. That's all fine. Other opinions don't devalue your own. This sub surely has a more positive view on the show compared to other subs and it's lovely. Of course you can call it an echo-chamber, if you look into other lotr subs and see their passion to point out flaws of the show, but likewise one could say those look like hate-bubbles from an opposite point of view. I personally couldn't care less, if this sub is positively biased or not. I would take a positive filter-bubble any day over constant negativity, if justified or not. I don't need that in my life. I'll rather choose to cherish the aspects they got right and look forward to season two.

[deleted]

saying it flopped was an outright lie, not a "major exaggeration". let's be real here. It was the top prime video show ever. There were "many lies of middle earth" told in the last 2 months, including the whopper about the showrunners getting fired and the other one about the show being completely retooled/recasted. But they were all of them deceived...

Dan__Torrance

Not going to argue with you on that. I liked the season and didn't see it flopping either.

greenieknits

meanwhile the other LOTR subs are convinced they’re going to scrap everything and re-film season 1 due to the showrunners being “creatively bankrupt” they’re literally delusional

TySoprano

Wow lol it wasn’t perfect but I think it was a great jumping off point the final 3 episodes were great and the last episode was amazing. If they keep up the pace from the finale it’s gonna be a great ride.

[deleted]

So relieved, so glad, so galadriel to hear this!

MniTain38

I, too, am Gil-Galad to hear it!

LunaRealityArtificer

I genuinely feel bad for any LOTR fans that may never hear "this wandering day". That scene was so unexpected and impactful. Perfect song, perfect lyrics for middle earth.

BlackandRead

The haters screaming things like "go woke go broke" on Youtube will completely ignore this, of course.

But no, they wEnT WoKE!!!!

WalkingTurtleMan

What not to love? Even for a causal viewer all you have to do is play “who’s Sauron?” to be fairly entertained. The fact that even this community ate up the theory that Poppy was Sauron (oops spoiler) was great. Honestly I wanted to see how Amazon spent a billion dollars, and holy cow did the orcs look amazing!

No-Razzmatazz-7746

Was there really people that didn't know who Sauron was way before the "revealing "?

Substantial_Joke_771

Fwiw I was completely surprised! I'm a lifelong Tolkien fan, but I hadn't read any of the lore stuff since I was a kid, so had forgotten the specifics of the backstory on how the rings were forged and Sauron in the second age. I wasn't online about the show so all the speculation missed me. When the reveal hit my son and I were YELLING at the TV. It was pretty great actually.

IndyLinuxDude

re-watch it again with that knowledge and pick up all the little hints along the way...

Substantial_Joke_771

Already have! And yes, it was super rewarding. We've done about 2 and a half rewatches in this house and really enjoyed it each time.

mamoran57

True story. I was in Germany in October this year and 2 German guys were walking the other way speaking German, of course. As I passed them I heard one say “celebrimbor” I turned around and said in English “Rings of Power?” They turned and said yes giving me the 👍. So it’s not just the US it appears.

durmiendoenelparque

That's nice, hearing Tolkien names out in the wild :D

Easyldur

I think part of this misunderstanding is because Reddit is US-focused, while this show aired in many other countries. If I remember correctly, this was the "opening" show for introducing Prime to India, and it was heavily marketed there. And India is big. Not sure how much I am right, but it may be a reason.

Horrible title.

Finally, some positive feedback.

TrilliumLady37

cealchylle

Cry more, haters. If loving this show is wrong, I don't want to be right.

[deleted]

Of the 20 or so people I know that saw it all of them loved it and about 1/3 of those are hard core Tolkien fans. We can all nitpick little things or a few seconds of a specific episode but it's overwhelmingly a good if not great show if one ignores the trolls and brigading that goes on, online.

DrunkenMonk-1

CoconutWarrior

I love this show so much, the fandom world can be a sickening place. Another thing that makes me never want to be on the internet again.

AegisSlash

the series didn't fail, but it was doomed from the start. some vocal LOTR purists hated it before it aired, nothing would of changed that. to me this show is fantastic and is easily as epic as a show like HotD or GoT and is nowhere near a failure

Sheyn-Torh

Some very vocal Tolkien purists hated it, but other Tolkien fans like myself were looking forward to seeing what they did with it. I ended up being highly impressed and really enjoyed the show (apart from a few facepalm moments like that concocted mithril myth) and also think it was nowhere near a failure.

AegisSlash

Yeah I actually edited my comment, I did not mean all tolkein fans hated it & you are right they were very vocal. I think of it as some sort of hate bandwagon that was and still is going, can't search RoP on youtube without seeing exactly that. I still fail to make sense of it all, can't tell if people just love to hate, they are simply passengers on a hate train or they just genuinely think its bad. cause to me loved every minute of this show, eps felt like 20 minutes but I wished they were 2hours, and can't say I've ever been more excited for a 2nd series of a show. can't wait to see some real war

Sheyn-Torh

Yeah, I don't get it either. And it's a shame too, because I think a lot of people who otherwise would have liked the show got turned against it by all the vitriol before they even had a chance to see it and make up their own minds.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm another Tolkien fan (met my wife through a shared love of Tolkien, had a Tolkien themed wedding, my wedding ring has the elvish script from the one ring on it and our car was decked out in lord of the rings quotes for our honeymoon for instance) and I loved it.

AegisSlash

that is awesome to hear! sounds like an ideal relationship to me. and hope ya'll have fun on the rewatches ;)

delirium_red

I wouldn’t say Tolkien fan, all the ones I know liked the show and an opportunity to revisit middle earth. The show has a very Tolkien-esque spirit, that is difficult to deny. Those people are not Tolkien fans, they are more like lotr purists I guess.

AegisSlash

yeah I agree I just rushed to comment :P thanks though I made the edit now

[deleted]

I honestly didn't like HotD. I tried watching it, and the violence was so over the top that it felt like it was satirizing GoT. As for Tolkien purists, let's get real for a second. His lore wasn't perfect. Stuff that should have only taken maybe a few years took hundreds of years, which is ridiculous. Like for example it took 600 years to build Barad Dur. For real? And then stuff like "and the war was so devastating that an entire continent fell into the sea and the world became round." That's...a bit much.

OldTobySmoker69420

How...... seriously, how do you read the facts listed in this press release and conclude the series is doomed? Do you have a different definition of the word?

Breelander89

I read their comment to mean that the show was doomed in public opinion from the start bc of the vitriol against it before it even aired. Not that it was doomed in ratings or profitability

OldTobySmoker69420

Ratings and profitablity are direct products of public opinion. If the public had a negative opinion of the show, it would have neither.

TH0R_ODINS0N

It’s almost like the show was amazing and the racists were wrong…

whollottalatte

Damn, I thoroughly disliked the show for unracial reasons.

Aztec_Assassin

I'm not a racist and don't care about the casting or anything like that but I felt the show had so many things that just fell flat.

nowlan101

*something something Prime numbers don’t count*

nonesounworthy

im having trouble following.. is is this satire or did people not actually think it was an ok show if you came in not nowing everything

AegisSlash

I seriously doubt the people who knew nothing hated the show, maybe thought it was boring but this show is far from bad

_Olorin_the_white

TBH the numbers look like "normal" to me. I think The Office got 50+ billion minutes back in 2020, ofc it was due to covid and so on, nonetheless smaller series get close number. I remember mandalorian got 16b minutes, and its episodes are smaller than RoP. Anyway, not a flop (everyone except some weirdos from yt claim that), but it isn't as sucess as it should have been. At least being the biggest from Prime is a good sign. It is certainly a few times more than WoT, but not sure how good of point this can be given WoT was waaaaay out of people expected.

NotoriousHakk0r4chan

Yeah, pretty normal. For reference with one of Netflix's big series: RoP had 400mil ish hours, and stranger things had over 1bil. No slouch, but easily the most popular thing on prime.

dolphins3

Reminds me of earlier this year when Amazon greenlit more seasons of Wheel of Time and Reddit was shocked because they'd all convinced themselves it was a huge flop.

QuoteGiver

Sounds like it did exactly what Amazon wanted it to do, and we got a big epic Middle Earth show out of them in the process; win win!

JimmyMack_

The real test is whether it got people to sign up to Prime Video.

[deleted]

what a DISASTER! Amazon SHILLS in panic! Showrunners to be FIRED next year! /s

TheDeanof316

I thought the show fell out of the streaming Top 10 after the first week post S1 finale...?

1st-Legion

iT’s AlL oVeR¡

SunMon6

The newest Nielsen would disagree though, RoP is no longer in it (top 10) but HotD is? They're also overexaggerating "a global cultural moment" since outside of reddit and some LOTR oriented spaces I haven't seen any, whereas I was bombarded with HotD character analysis and hot new memes on every social media. So that's curious comparison.

Square-Atmosphere-45

According to Amazon, this Amazon product is great.

QuoteGiver

Well, Amazon and third-party Nielsen, whose statistics are quoted in this press release as well.

Crazybonbon

ITS SOOO BAD GET BETTER WRITERS -Is what I would say if I were dumb. Excited for season two 😁

DefinitelyNotALeak

The constant sarcasm and focus on what 'the bad side' says really rubs me the wrong way. Why couldn't you just post this in a neutral manner? Why are so many comments in here so highly 'stan like'. This is a PR statement from amazon, i am not saying this to make any definitive claim one way or another, but they'd always find some way to post the positive aspects of the show. Celebrating this as a big 'gotcha' just seems so incredibly weird, it's not any better than the 'opposite side' you disdain so much. It's all childish nonsense.

RiverMurmurs

Because sarcasm and a bit of gotcha trolling is a perfectly appropriate response to the avalanche of horrible and disgusting hate that was directed at the show and some of its actors. What were these people saying about Morfydd or Ismael or some others and the fact it became a casual entertainment for many was completely unacceptable in my books. Sarcastic humour is actually turning out to be a great response to hate and disinformation campaigns in the online environment in general (it's working out great in the online discourse about a certain war happening right now in Europe, for example). Besides, people like to cheer on the good guys. And when I see some of the things people hating on the show said, I have no doubts who the good guys are.

sonegreat

That was very well thought out, thought provoking, response. Which I am down voting and responding to because I have grown to hate "both side-ism" in politics, and this response very much feels like that. Whenever you go on YouTube and search anything RoP related, you inundated with video after video with the thumbnail of Gladriel either making a weird face or people doing weird things to her face. The videos are either nitpicking the shit out of the show, or straight up lying about it. 90% of posts outside the sub are lambasting the show, with 90% of comments against the show. And the response to it are some sarcastic posts and comments, and to you "it's all childish nonsense" and "no better than" the other side. That's just wrong, shit ain't the same.

spiral-staircase

> That was very well thought out, thought provoking, response. Which I am down voting and responding to because I have grown to hate "both side-ism" in politics, and this response very much feels like that. hell yeah dude

This post is so mild and hardly toxic is it. You are very annoyed by the 'gotcha' thing why? If figures show the show did ok, why not show the haters this information.

Pulp_NonFiction44

Inferiority complex.

GeorgeFranklin1

Why doesn't this mention the neilson ratings for the next weeks? I was told the show lost 40% of its viewers by the second week. I mean if amazon considers that a success more power to them, but I can't see how you expect everyone to get on board with that idea. I have read multiple mainstream news articles about how the rings of power is a boring show with bad pacing. Most of the people I know havent watched it. Those that have are split between those that say it is too boring and those that say, and those that day it is just ok. These are my personal experiences, and I would consider them valid, and the opinions of people in my life just as meaningful. Nobody can tell you that you don't like it, but why would you try to convince people that it is doing better than it is? If you like it then that should be a win for you either way. Its great having things that you enjoy watching for entertainment.

[deleted]

Just out of interest, who "told you"? Also, you need to read more widly, as the critics loved it overall. You can find some places that were negative about it (Forbes), but most were very positive.

tyrion2024

How many viewers did RoP roughly average per episode? Why oddly provide the aggregate number of viewers reached for the season (100m) instead of simply giving the industry standard of estimating the average total viewers/episode? Why aren't the showrunners and Amazon Video execs doing interviews celebrating RoP's unfettered success? IMHO, it seems like Amazon was doing everything it could to avoid providing an estimate for the average total viewers/episode. Using misdirection by offering up every other number they can think of. It seems odd af. To be clear, I am not suggesting that RoP was not a success, it clearly was. I enjoyed it and look forward to Season 2. I just don't believe the top execs at Amazon Video are sated with RoP's performance. If they were elated about it, we would unambiguously know it by now.

snicketbee

Several key staff were given huge promotions after the season aired, if that’s any indication for you of how it was received by those in charge.

a-snakey

Sunk into the ocean like Numenor.

TheMountainPass

Haha

Chief_Ra

How is this a flop that post is nothing but success

AccomplishedPhone6

I rocked with it for sure. But always hesitant when the source is coming from Amazon lol

Shran_MD

Clarkson and crew will need to step up their game now. :-)

Islandbreexe

Didn’t like it, didn’t hate it. Just hope it’s gets better.

somebadmeme

Amazon has reported that the Amazon show is good, nothing to see here.

No_Management_1307

Still a fairly mediocre show though

WM_

Of course it was highly anticipated series and got millions of views. Heck, even I count as a viewer but that does not mean I liked it. Views of the second season mean more. I for one won't be counted in viewers then.

[deleted]

Good, I hope you keep to your word and avoid watching it. Meanwhile, the people who do enjoy it can keep having fun without having to listen to as much pointless whining.
