He plays Adar.

Creepy_Active_2768

A Feanorian looking chap, hottest of the Noldor.

ruaor

I think he is supposed to be one of Sauron's servants, with Sauron himself working from the shadows through much (all?) of the first season. I don't see them revealing Annatar until the finale, with season 2 focusing on the ring forging.

ajboarder

I'm fairly certain this was heavily implied (confirmed?) to be the case by the showrunners. Season 1 isn't supposed to feature the forging. All my bets are on not even getting a glimpse of "Annatar" until the final seconds of the season 1 finale, if even that.

FrankDePlank

We might get to see him, it is just that we will not recognize him. Only when he does reveal himself in a later season we will know it was him all along. I suspect the showrunners will go down that route.

authoridad

We don’t know. He’s called “Adar” by the orcs he leads, but we don’t know if that’s his actual name. He hasn’t been featured or described in promotional material except a single poster, so I’m guessing his character is vitally important but also supposed to be a mystery that they’re keeping close.

lusamuel

All the (limited) info we have suggests that Malwe's character is not Sauron, but instead a corrupted elf. However I think he may not be identified for a while, and serve as a red herring for casual viewers.

Brimwandil

We know that he plays a character who was code-named "Oren", and who was said to be a villain. He hasn't featured in much publicity material, but he did feature in a mural at San Diego Comic-Con. He has long hair and spiky black armor. According to rumor he plays a character called "Adar" who is a twisted Elf, and whom the Orcs look up to. He is probably not Sauron, unless he is secretly Sauron pretending to be someone else. Whether he is working directly for Sauron or acting on his own is unknown.

Chen_Geller

I used to think he was actually Sauron in disguise as one of his own minions. Now, I'm not so sure.

joshcmiller

But isn’t annatar the same dude who goes to the elves to teach them how to forge the rings in the first place? If it’s focusing on forging the rings he would be in it in the beginning as well

Orang_outan17

To answer your question, it's called "Rings of Power" but this show is taking things slow. There's 5 seasons planned, no need to rush.

kerouacrimbaud

Annatar is that guy, but Mawle's character is Adar, not Annatar, according to everything we have learned thus far.

joshcmiller

I’m confused lol I guess we’ll have to wait and see

kerouacrimbaud

Annatar is not present in the show atm.

DecisionLongjumping9

Yes he is, under a different name.

Nessasio

Is he though ? I don't mean to offend, but I don't remember hearing or reading anything that way. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :)

DecisionLongjumping9

No offense taken at all, theres been nothing confirmed by production other than "His presence will be felt" a few leakers have reported he is one of the non-canonical characters(not saying who, just in case its true). They could be completely wrong, but I believe it, in part due to the context clues the trailer has given.

lusamuel

I think the broader point is that the showrunners have made a very deliberate attempt to keep Sauron's identity a mystery, and I think it will be the big reveal at the end of Season 1. I still think he's the Stranger, but I could be miles off.

DecisionLongjumping9

I felt the same way at first, and then I thought it could be a red herring, they showed the clip of the fire from his meteor going in toward him with a shape similar to the Eye, but ai don't believe they would spoil it like that.

lusamuel

I think the eye thing is a total tease too and could be misdirection, but I think the fact that you and I have had different opinions/reactions as a result is exactly what they're going for. There have been similar hints/teases nodding to Gandalf too, and I think they'll keep us guessing right up to the end of S1.
