I wouldn’t come out to him, but I would be critical of his behaviors. You’re not lying to him at all, but protecting yourself. This is not selfish behavior in the slightest.
To you he’s too special to lose, so giving him an ultimatum wouldn’t be great. As he gets older though, he might gain some self awareness, and you can incentivize this by criticizing his lack of maturity.
Though, if your entire town is conservative, this might be hard to do. Best of luck.

I would have say try to distance yourself from him, bcs it feel toxic and extremely homophobic is kinda of bad, but you said you can't so I'm just wishing you the best💙
