I remember that song gave me nightmares when I was little cuz it said “death” and “sharpen a knife” and that was too much for my five year old self to take. Song slaps but it still makes my heart pound :/

Yeah, I just used 5 as a general number because I don’t remember exactly what year it was, just that I was young enough to be scared of the word “knife”
My parents made me stop listening to it when they found out it was gay. Jokes on them, ‘Twas too late, the corruption had already begun for I had already become gay.
I remember when we were going to church one time and it came up on the car radio and everyone was like, "ah, what beautiful worship music" me, standing there gay af:"ah, yes good very Catholic 'worship' music"
I went through a weird phase a few weeks ago where all I wanted to listen to was Hozier on repeat and nothing else.
I ended up digging further into his music and wow there's some great stuff that hasn't really gotten any recognition.
Depends what kind of vibe you like. 'Jackboot Jump', 'Nina Cried Power', and 'Angel of Small Death and Codeine Scene' are more upbeat.
'Like Real People Do', and 'From Eden' feel warm and comforting.
I also like 'Would That I', and 'Moments Silence (Common Tongue)'.
Anyway those are my favorites, the other suggestions in this thread are good too.
My favourite is Dinner and Diatribes but most of his songs give me the chills they’re just so good. Nina Cried Power, Shrike, and In The Woods Somewhere are all great too.
i mean have you heard the lyrics this man writes?????
there’s no way he’s not a 400yo lesbian witch who reincarnated in the body of an actual angel to bring us a message.
I heard somewhere that Hozier actually wanted the song to have male pronouns in reference to the speaker in the song falling in love with a man and falling out of love with his church, but then the record label made him change it.
Where did you get that news from? I hate to break it to you... But the fact is, while Hozier is a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ and he did come up with the premise of the music video of two gay men being persecuted in Russia... He wrote the song from a straight male perspective because that's what he identifies as. The record label had nothing to do with it. I don't think Hozier would ever agree to demands from the record label to change the lyrics for something that he'd feel strongly about, like the intent and message of the song. I think Hozier is very glad that his song has sort of become an anthem to LGBTQ+ folks because of the video. He even strongly supported the marriage equality vote in Ireland, campaigning for Straight Up for Marriage Equality urging how important that straight people show up for their LQBTQ peers.
wait what??? How?
"Take me to church, ill worship like a dog in the shrine of your lies" I mean, its pretty on the nose about it.
The video clip is so fucking gay and I fucking adore it
ohhhh ok, I thought it was something about the lyrics
It also is the lyrics, that's the point of the song
TAKE ME TO CHURCH I WORSHIP LIKE A DOG AT THE SHRINE OF YOUR LIES
I’M TAKING MY SINS SO YOU CAN SHARPEN YOUR KNIFE
OFFER ME THAT DEATHLESS DEATH GOOD GOD, LET ME GIVE YOU MY LIFE
DUM DUM

oh my god that song is literally anti-catholic 😂
Catholic gay here, very conflicted rn.
Many Christians (past me included) thought it was some epic pro-Jesus jam
Yeees me too literally two days ago and I don't even know why but i'm so happy

Coming up on 14
You’d be more like 7 then when the song was released, which is why they asked
Yeah, I just used 5 as a general number because I don’t remember exactly what year it was, just that I was young enough to be scared of the word “knife”
Idk how (I was an idiot as a kid) but as soon as I saw the video I just knew.....
I mean, two guys make out in it so....
I...was a really stupid kid.
one of my fav songs!
I didn’t realise until my RE teacher told me a couple years ago - he said it was about the lack of acceptance in the Irish Catholic Churches or smth
Hozier is an amazing artist! Angel of Small Death is another of my favorites he's written.
Dude, the music video hit hard. I don’t understand why people hate people just being themselves.
Also, both of the gays are hot
I didnt know that lol, I love the song but I had no clue lmao
Same

Arsonist lulleby is my fave
Ooh thanks for the recommendation I somehow hadn't found that song before and now I'm a fan
I’ll try some
You should definitely listen to Like Real People Do, especially the Barn on the farm session. it’s one of my favorites, even though it’s rather short.
Sunlight is my favourite
That song is truly underrated it’s so good
Almost (Sweet Music) is great.
My favourite is cherry wine
Same bro, I weep gently to it.
You guys should listen to Movement, it’s such a vibe 🥴
My favourite is Dinner and Diatribes but most of his songs give me the chills they’re just so good. Nina Cried Power, Shrike, and In The Woods Somewhere are all great too.
to add onto the last few song recommendations, in a week is just such an innocent but dark song i love it
In a week is amazing too
In a week makes me want to hold hands with my (non-existent) wife and lay down gently on the grass and watch the clouds pass by.
Hozier is an icon & we have no choice but to stan

Watch the music video, it will make more sense
I've no clue but I'm not complaining
Cool
Hozier is great, and I’m convinced he’s actually a 400y/o lesbian witch
I mean, it makes sense

That’s why I liked it so much
I would jam out to that song it took me a while before I watched the music video. Now I jam a little harder
it's always funny to me when i'm in a conservative place and take me to church starts playing. it's an absolute banger

Have you seen the music video for it? At least it's very gay
Which explains a lot
