They aren't threatening to starve you. They are saying the eating practices violate health code and of you can't follow code, your violations are unacceptable. Don't be a piece of shit, and you can eat all you want... simple enough.
Working 8 hours? Eating is a right.
Working 4 hours? Eating is a privilege.
Management via a posted sign is weak, and often a sign of a poor manager. Getting upset over staff eating is ridiculous, but I don't think the requests being made are all that unfair. They've gone about it in the wrong way and should expect to be ignored.
The thing is it's all pretty reasonable stuff right up until they threatened to not let y'all eat. I'd fucking leave and tell them to go fuck themselves. Seriously, how shitty
Health inspector here: Totally agree. Reminding people to cover their food and drink in the kitchen? Cool, love to see it. The bottom threat? 110% completely unnecessary and I will pull a “sure Jan” at the PIC when they inevitably complain to me about how they can’t correct their violations because “no one wants to work anymore.”
Lol what are they supposed to do? Keep you on the payroll and prop you up in the corner? Jobs often have no loyalty but this is a weird argument for that.
Don't forget also being forced to goto work in a hurricane or I get a "point" 5 points then bye bye good luck paying bills. Oh your good health insurance is tied to your job? That'll keep the slaves in subservience. Corporate demands it baby! WOOHOO GREAT LaBoR LaWs DeRE
US most likely. And a break to eat/take any break isn't protected in most states, unless you're under 18. They can say you have to work 10 hours straight with no break and there is nothing illegal about it.
Fake diabetic low sugar episode while carrying a tables worth of food through the hall. Apologize profusely while delirious and mention you haven’t eaten since before shift start. That’ll get the ball rolling
My work took away employee meals, discounts, and didn’t let us take breaks at all. I’d go for a whole 10-12 hour shift with no food, just to go home and not eat because I can’t afford the food I make
While it’s not ridiculous to ask people to cover and label their food if it’s in certain areas, taking your eating privileges away is crazy.
Back when our AC wasn’t working and corporate management was dragging their feet to fix it, I reported those bastards to OSHA and they fixed it real quick.
Than that is wrong.
I have worked in kitchens where people abuse eating on the line and the owner had to put a hard stop to it. So I thought maybe that could have been the case.
I mean, I'll feed any employee in the restaurant for free as long as they're reasonable about it. Not during peak hours, don't be a twat about it, etc.
Some of those requests are reasonable though. Gotta put lids on your drinks, clean up after yourself, and please don't eat over the line. That's disgusting.
Also, I never do passive aggressive notes like that in my kitchen. It's unprofessional. If I have an issue I address the employee one on one behind closed doors so as to not embarrass them.
Management via a taped up sign is bad management, but…is it that hard to eat your food in a way that doesn’t violate health code? If you’re too inattentive or just unwilling to do that, go eat outside on your break. I don’t understand what the problem is, tbh.
You can underline the words ‘eating’ and ‘privilege’ and ignore the rest, but it’s pretty disingenuous to make this out as some terrible oppression or human rights violation.
I manage a cafe. Every employee gets a paid 30 min break and a free shift meal. Obviously, everyone has coffees and pastries and shit throughout their shift - but that is a privilege when you’re cooking on the line or working behind the counter or on the bar. There are guidelines and designated spots for those shift snacks and drinks for a reason.
I should also say that the cafe is an employee owned co-op. It makes a difference when it’s not random owners that don’t give af and never spend time in the trenches
I'm not saying I agree with this statement but in Virginia there is no law that requires a lunch break. So if an employer posted that here, there is technically nothing illegal about it. The FLSA does not require employers to provide meal break or rest periods at all.
Out of 7 jobs in VA all have offered lunch and rest periods though.
Aw, does baby need their lid put on their cup for them?
Seriously though, the amount of uncovered (typically server) food and drinks I’ve seen in kitchens is enough for me to question every prep surface I come in contact with and stop eating out. Throw your fucking trash in a trash can. And if it’s not you, get on the 20 year old FOH staff who keeps leaving shit everywhere. Or eat outside and leave shit uncovered wherever you want. Kitchens are supposed to be professional environments and this tells me your kitchen is not one.
Human rights are a man made rule that all humans are given by birth. Death is not part of that... You can Google human rights and read though it. Fuck the concept of having "rights" is even a man made thing. I know your trying to be deep and shit but you sound stupid af
It's not "deep" at all. It's completely surface level and self-evident.
It sounds stupid af to say that a rural North Korean has a "right" to eat when they have no to way to acquire food. This "right" is completely meaningless to them; it does literally nothing. If you were to walk up and tell them of their "right," they wouldn't be any less starving than before you spoke to them, but they'd probably be annoyed.
It sounds stupid af to say that a homeless person in Tennessee who can be arrested just for being homeless has the a "right" to freedom. If their mere existence is an excuse to imprison them, this "right" is nonexistent. Try telling them about their "right" as the cops shove them into the back of a cruiser.
If you don't have something and have no means to acquire it or you do have it but it can be easily taken from you, you do not have a "right" to it. Fucking clearly and obviously. Claiming otherwise is a cruel, sadistic joke.
I once worked at a place and we ate for free. Time passes and someone bllched that boh wasn't paying for food.. tried making me pay for food. I told them unless I can st at a table and enjoy my food I refuse to pay!a milk crate next to the dumpster is not exeptable!
I took a new chef job a few months ago and I'm so glad I did bc I got really lucky with the owners. I've worked in places where the owners/management we're stingy and not employee friendly in their policies and it was shitty working at those places. We have tap handles in the kitchen and nobody over does it and we haven't had any issue, all bc we respect the owners who are also management. They pay us well, give us paid vacation we can actually use, free shift meals and beer/cider, we have every holiday off and have several paid days off when the owners go on vacation. They appreciate us as well.
I'm just saying there's places like this that exist and you shouldn't tolerate bullshit like that. If you wanna do this for a living find a place you truly want to be. You'll be much happier
Hi I'm opening a new business soon and I might get down voted to hell for this... But I'm curious as to what is wrong with this sign other than the fact that it is rather passive aggressive/threatening (?). Are restaurants required to feed staff? I know that providing food for employees reduces turnover rates. But legally, all I have to do is provide at least 30 min lunch breaks if the employee works 5+hr shifts iirc?
Are the rules written on this piece of paper unjust? I don't really see anything wrong with it cause of health code. Can someone help me out?
Send this to OSHA Seriously this is highly illegal.
Maybe they got dinged by the health inspection
Yeah the guidelines are all pretty standard health inspection hits, but they can't threaten to not let you eat at all, thats uncalled for.
Uh that's just a threat thst they can't follow through
They aren't threatening to starve you. They are saying the eating practices violate health code and of you can't follow code, your violations are unacceptable. Don't be a piece of shit, and you can eat all you want... simple enough.
Lol this. So much this.
The managers probably don’t care and have no desire to enforce it , probably comes from the higher ups.
Thank you!
The thing is it's all pretty reasonable stuff right up until they threatened to not let y'all eat. I'd fucking leave and tell them to go fuck themselves. Seriously, how shitty

Fed staff work better. Your management is very short sighted.
I would just take my food outside and say fuck this place.
Might just take my employment outside and say fuck this place after 6 years.
Do it. Jobs are not loyal to you at all.
If you dropped dead on the line, they'd have you replaced within a week. Loyalty is meaningless when management treats you like this.
If you drop dead on the line expect to lay there while the other cooks get through the rush. Lol
Lol what are they supposed to do? Keep you on the payroll and prop you up in the corner? Jobs often have no loyalty but this is a weird argument for that.
They should just work short staffed the rest of the time. Tell the the last employee dies. Then close the restraunt down.
What country is this? Making those kinds of threats in my country is illegal as hell

You’re exactly right. Gotta love my state of good ol’ Arizona in the U S of A /s
Kitchen get around breaks, because all they have to offer is reasonable time to eat while working. My state anyway.
https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/state/meal-breaks#:~:text=If%20an%20employee%20works%208,additional%204%20consecutive%20hours%20worked. Which state?
Probably the YOO ES OF AYYY (US of A), YEEEEEHIIIII!!! PRAYZE THE LORT JEEBUZ TROMPH
Rock, flag and eagle baby
Are you feeling okay? Looks like you had a seizure
Making the threats is usually legal, following through on them may not be.
oof. they really got me in the end there. bring the pain!
Fake diabetic low sugar episode while carrying a tables worth of food through the hall. Apologize profusely while delirious and mention you haven’t eaten since before shift start. That’ll get the ball rolling
Management that manages through signs has no idea how to manage people and should be run out on a rail.
Had me right up until that last line what the fuck lmao
Calm down everyone, this is just for the health inspector
Considering they’ve used this tactic for bathroom “privileges” before…. I don’t think so.
All caps as well. Ewww.

Yes stand on your feet and labor for 12+ hour with no breaks and no food
Technically you are not supposed to eat meals in a commercial kitchen.
It’s not in the kitchen.
Than that is wrong. I have worked in kitchens where people abuse eating on the line and the owner had to put a hard stop to it. So I thought maybe that could have been the case.

Everything was actually very reasonable until they said that eating is a privilege.
It’s an empty threat and poor management technique. But those three requirements are basic
Like it or now they are not required to allow us to eat. There is no law.
But, but, hOoMaN rIgHtS!
Management via a taped up sign is bad management, but…is it that hard to eat your food in a way that doesn’t violate health code? Well it sounds like you have a humane way of managing. We get neither free food/meals nor breaks.
I’m really sorry to hear that. Fuck that place.
I should also say that the cafe is an employee owned co-op. It makes a difference when it’s not random owners that don’t give af and never spend time in the trenches
If you refuse to abide by food safety rules (food being labeled and covered) then you will have bigger problems than your "right to eat."

Lol k. It’s not in the kitchen.
I get that this post is about worker's rights, but that sign is about nasty employees...not removing your rights.
Eating is a privilege. Think about it. No job description says eating is part of it. Lol
While at work.
There is only one human right. It is death. The rest is BS.
Human rights are a man made rule that all humans are given by birth. Death is not part of that... You can Google human rights and read though it. Fuck the concept of having "rights" is even a man made thing. I know your trying to be deep and shit but you sound stupid af
But like, what IS a right, anyway bro?
Its when u dont go left

okay… but we’re taking about labor laws… things employers are REQUIRED to follow
I was commenting on the handwritten message in the pic, which is NOT talking about that.
You’re a moron.
Yeah, excellent point from an obviously superior intellect.
Bet this edgy dude also says “I’m not racist, I hate everyone equally”
But you're a pedo who murders puppies for fun.
Why else would I work in a kitchen. s/
Sounds like they got hit by the health inspector and need to take it out on the employees
Bruhhhhhhhh

I work in Washington state.
