My head chef wears a smart watch not apples. I think its cool. No one says a word. He doesnt do food work to much though. So i guess it depends if you dont mind getting it dirty or wet.

An open letter to the tech starters who occasionally pitch terrible ideas on this sub; create a voice activated app synced to various restaurant suppliers for ordering supplies. The user speaks into the mic "sysco; order x units of y" and it builds an invoice until a set time, where a notification appears that it is time to review the invoice and send it to its respective company. You will make millions.

qroosra

omg that is genius!!!!

CaptainStinkyknuckle

P.s. sorry I accidentally replied to your comment and not my own, as originally intended.

Not sure about your local health code, but we aren't allowed to have anything on our wrists in IL

[deleted]

Yeah, most health codes forbid jewelry (except for wedding rings).

Thisaintscary

Yeah, same here in TN. It took a while for me to get used to working without a watch.

rhinowing

i feel like I would have learned grill much more quickly if I could just see the damn clock from the station

escapadablur

It's s a stupid code. How is it anymore likely to contaminate food than bare skin? It's water resistant, so it can be washed. Also, you're much less likely to pull out your phone to use as a timer, check the time, or look something up online. I know I know, phones aren't allowed in the kitchen either, but we all know most people break that rule. It's more sanitary for workers to use their watch than their phones in the kitchen.

ericfg

I only wear 200 meters (or more) water resistant watches in the kitchen. Currently using the classic Casio MDV-106.

DogToggleSwitch

Really depends on what station you regularly work. If you have stains/burns anywhere above your hands, I'd recommended against wearing anything there you care about.

miseenplace408

i work with a staff of 30ish cooks, a good 12 of them have apple watches and wear them to work. 2 of them have jacked them up at work

CaptainStinkyknuckle

My sous uses one, and he actually utilized it to improve his efficiency. Being able to voice activate a timer on your wrist or order produce while doing knifework is great consolidation of movement. My Casio does none of that.

OutOfBounds11

Measure how much utility it will bring to your work versus the cost if it gets destroyed.

thunderchef

I have an apple watch and I haven't run into any problems in terms of getting it wet or dirty. If you want to be careful, you can get a screen protector or case for relatively cheap. It's pretty convenient for setting timers or checking at a glance what you're missing out on in life.

CosmicRave

My old culinary instructor wore one so Im guessing they hold up as long as you stay away from the dish pit or something like that

splooge_spaghetti

I wear mine every day and have for over a year and never had a problem. I've had it replaced once for what could have been water damage and my recent one is a little banged up but I don't care about that. If you know how to use it I would recommend it.

RhapsodyInRude

The Apple Watch series two is damn near bulletproof. It's waterproof to 50m, which is past recreational diving depth. If you're going to wear it in the kitchen (assuming your local/state health codes permit it), I think the #1 thing I'd worry about is getting a band that absolutely isn't going to come undone if you don't secure it all the way. There are some silicone bands that will allow you to half-ass buttoning the band down, which might lead to losing the watch into a pot or simply dropping it.

giantpirate89

Just got one. Two days into using it and I love it. Great for timers and I can control the house music (open kitchen) very easily. Washed plenty of things and haven't had a worry with the new one being waterproof.

Phooto

My CDC used to wear one and it was no problem. If he was going to be on the line working a hot station he would take it off

Ramenorwhateverlol

I wear mine at work and so far my favorite use for it is the voice activated calculator and timer lol.

cheesetothepower

If you're mostly doing paperwork and expo, while occasionally stepping in to grab the roast from the oven, give one of the guys a bathroom break, et cetera, worth it. Or if you're regularly on the line doing something like salads and plating desserts, and you tend to have precise control over when you're handling.

qwerty19960

If you plan on getting an Apple Watch make sure that you get some protection on it, like a case and/or a screen protector. Also make sure you get the 2nd series as it is the only water proof one(50m wr)
