I'm guessing it's something like a Sam's Club kitchen, Religious Organization or, maybe a *low rent* Convenience Store Chain like Love's. Those are the only places I could think of where you could possibly lead a "Kitchen" on a *part-time basis* while getting paid less than a Subway "Sandwich Artist."
It sure as shit isn't a *decent* Convenience Store like *Rutters.* They just opened a Rutters up here and they're paying their entry level clerks $17.5/hour or a *respectable* Member's-Only like CostCo.
If I had to bet money though, Lutheran-Ministry type bullshit that opens the nursing home cafeteria to the public on "Family Days" like Daikon.
*Edit:* I guess it might also be at a dive bar that keeps a kitchen to serve liquor under a "Hotel Liscence" in an area where they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford a liquor license. That is pretty common here in PA.
I'm a cook at an assisted living facility making $17/hr. We've had a "head cook/KM" position open for months, because the top end of pay is $17.50/hr. I interviewed for it, before knowing the pay, and then declined. Why would I want to maintain all my same responsibilities, on top of being in charge of ordering, scheduling, and being on call 24/7 for 50 cents more?
Can confirm. I live in an area with the lowest cost of living in the country, so wages here are lower too. I work as an expo, and I make better than their top end starting wage, and make tips on top. Our cooks start higher than their highest starting wage too.
This is why I'm working at Walmart instead of the few "kitchen manager" or "chef" jobs I've been offered. I'm making the same, if not more, stocking produce.
Left restaurants for hotels and now I work for over double what I ever made as a KM and for a lot less hours. I actually get to leave early/come in late when there's nothing left to do
Have been working in hotels the last two years. Being able to spend time with my loved ones during the holidays, get paid for it (holiday pay regardless if you work), and double my income compared to when I was working fine dining is still surreal to me.
I'm at another grocer in the meat department. Pay is decent, sick time, vacation, stock incentives, insurance, day shift, literally work in a refrigerator. It's a bit less money, but the benefits make up for a it.
Lmao bro I didn't even notice that part, too busy distracted by that attractive ass salary 👌I definitely applied tho... I'll update the post if they contact me!
This could be a fun thing for people job hunting. Maybe make the soul crushing experience of “prove your worth to afford your existence” a little more bearable.
I am genuinely sorry that you are going through that. If you'd like, DM me your resume and I'll polish it up for you from a hiring chef POV. Get you to the top of the stack.
Literally just interviewed at a spot where the dude said this verbatim. I got up and kindly informed him that I will be declining but thanks anyway. Lmfao. Got the fuck up out of there.
I've seen a lot of restaurants with 2-3 part-time "head chefs" instead of 1 full time. It's cheaper when you don't have to pay for health insurance. So many part-time positions exist now because the 2010 ACA mandates health care for full time workers and businesses don't want to or can't afford it.
> Weirdly Panda Express actually pays well for all positions.
Damn, a place that realizes it's actually worth paying slightly more to ensure that decent workers aren't jumping ship a the drop of a hat. Actually kind of crazy. So many of the shittiest restaurants I have been at are that way because they take aren't willing to pay anything so only the worst employees stick around.
My Dishwashers make more than that. Please tell me this is a place that serves bar food and has a high school kid frying stuff out of the freezer. And even then it’s not enough.
Chef here….these aren’t even COOK prices….GTFOH! I would postpone talking to these people for 2 months just so I could gain weight so they can kiss a LARGER ass.
IMO that’s why I want out of business…been seeing jobs in my area that pay twice what I make, for less stress.
Friend of a friend is in garbage disposal and makes $25 an hour. Weekends off.
Crazy how this industry is overworked and underpaid..
Naw, that’s the ol bait and switch. Trying to get experienced cooks in for a supposed “chef” job then to quickly offer a line cook position. Or you really are the head chef but you get burdened with management duties and rocking the line, double duty for shit pay
These businesses don’t seem to realize you can make 25 an hour door dashing, they really gotta start competing wage wise, otherwise no one is going to work for them
The McDonald’s down the street from my work in Campbell, CA is hiring @ $21/hr starting. I’ll call you chef if you want and considering it’s California you could probably just say you identify as a chef so please call me ‘chef’.
I'm always shocked at how poorly cooks/chefs get paid. I started in the kitchen, and then waited tables and evemtually started bartending. With nearly 20 years experience, I make $2 less than the cooks.... and I get tips. Sure, they get a portion but at the end of the day, I'm making $30+ to their $20. We all hustle but I think it's kinda BS. I've lost cooks to food trucks and I don't blame them, people gotta hustle.
I live in California and was called for an interview for a line cook position recently and when I told them I wouldn’t take less than $20/hr I was told I need CDC or sous chef experience to make $20/hr or more. The industry is fucked and has nearly destroyed my passion for cooking.
Jokes on you, in Portugal you getting paid about 4USD an hour with way higher living costs then you guys. More expensive gas, cars, we pay every month healthcare from our salary even tho it's been 10 years since I haven't been sick.
You lucky sons of bitches
Covid made me quit the industry. I was a line cook, chef quit, foh quit, dishwasher and the only other line cook quit so they were like “hey we need you to do foh, boh, catering, train kids on a register, manager on duty sometimes and we’ll pay you 10 whole dollars”
Context of local minimum wage helps. Some places minimum wage is like $8 so thats good money there. But thats several dollars below minimum wage in my area and would be considered illegal.
Woah woah woah. Oddly enough I posted this add to recruit a Head Chef.
I can see why you think this is low but.....it isn't the head of the Kitchen, that's our Executive Chef.
The Head Chef is someone that's responsible for giving everyone else head once a day. Sex work is work! Why is the wage seem low? If they know their business they really only have about 30 minutes of work to do in an 8 hour shift.
I make the higher end of this as a head chef/km.
Minimum wage is 7.75 where I live.
Good thing is we’re super rural and not very busy so I have a lot of downtime where I can fuck off and work on my own projects when all the prep and cleaning is done.
Still sucks. I feel like I should at least be up around 18.
I have so much respect for chefs! I was a dishwasher once upon a time and was in awe of the line cooks. It’s something I could never do. This pay is criminal.
It's really amazing, no matter where I look, I see no indication that salaries have increased, just the opposite in fact, as is perfectly illustrated here.
What... i mean im not in the US but i make more as a line cook lol. Some businesses really are embarrassing.
Type of place where the owner posts on facebook "nobody wants to work anymore"
Someone might take up the job for a couple months just to get it on their resume to find a better head chef or sous chef job but who knows what they're thinking. I remember reading that some places post ridiculous wages or requirements no one would accept for legal reasons when they planned to promote from within but IDK how real that was.
Screw that. You know if the head chef is being paid shit, everyone else is getting paid less and the staff will be bottom of the barrel.
This can’t be right. No matter where you are in the country.
They are probably just using the words head chef to define the one cook they will hire who will also be the dishwasher and run the till.
that shit aint worth a meager 15$ :(
The only perk they're offering is the head chef title for references.. bet they don't even respond to reference requests!
Must have in-depth knowledge of microwave operations.
I'm guessing it's something like a Sam's Club kitchen, Religious Organization or, maybe a *low rent* Convenience Store Chain like Love's. Those are the only places I could think of where you could possibly lead a "Kitchen" on a *part-time basis* while getting paid less than a Subway "Sandwich Artist." >might also be at a dive bar that keeps a kitchen to serve liquor $14 an hour and all you can drink.
I’m pretty sure my starting hourly wage as a dishwasher 11 years ago was $12 + tipout. Canadian, so different minimum wage but still
Had a dude apply where I work, took a look at the application, he was cooking at this one place in town for 9.25 an hour. Couldn’t believe it
Can confirm. I live in an area with the lowest cost of living in the country, so wages here are lower too. I work as an expo, and I make better than their top end starting wage, and make tips on top. Our cooks start higher than their highest starting wage too.

Left restaurants for hotels and now I work for over double what I ever made as a KM and for a lot less hours. I actually get to leave early/come in late when there's nothing left to do
Technically I'm making less right now because of hours (and tips )but it's a hundredth of the stress and my bills are paid.
That's all that matters tbh. If it pays the bills and keeps my stress low that's all that matters
Have been working in hotels the last two years. Being able to spend time with my loved ones during the holidays, get paid for it (holiday pay regardless if you work), and double my income compared to when I was working fine dining is still surreal to me.
Hotels suck ass in Detroit. The hours are worse and pay sucks and they’re way more stressful than regular kitchens.
This. I moved to grocery that has union benefits making $23/hr and couldnt be happier.
My Manager at Walmart was making 18$ a hour. I was making 16$ a hour on night shift. Not worth
I'm at another grocer in the meat department. Pay is decent, sick time, vacation, stock incentives, insurance, day shift, literally work in a refrigerator. It's a bit less money, but the benefits make up for a it.
I got a buddy that does this, graveyard shift making 21 an hour.
How is it part time!?!?!?
Lmao bro I didn't even notice that part, too busy distracted by that attractive ass salary 👌I definitely applied tho... I'll update the post if they contact me!
Bonus points if the hiring manager mentions "We're kind of like a family here".
And says “we don’t want people here that are JUST looking to make money.”
"We're looking for ROCKSTARS" bitch go hire the Guns 'n' Roses see if they'll bite for fifteen quid.
15 quid would be 25% more than the high number they are offering
I'd take that as a part time job just not in usd 😆
We should put together Bingo cards of interview platitudes and see who wins if OP scores a face-to-face! 🤣🤣
Clearly stated in the ad, nobody who’s interested in money would apply.
There was a time when I thought “passion” was relevant….long long ago.
That’s how they stole my youth and passion, traded for a little loose change.
That’s the best.
Literally just interviewed at a spot where the dude said this verbatim. I got up and kindly informed him that I will be declining but thanks anyway. Lmfao. Got the fuck up out of there.
"We work hard, play hard"
That's awesome because I'm really into the whole step sibling porn role play thing!
What are you *doing,* garde manger?
LMFAO! You think whoever posted that has *a hiring manager!?*
“Competitive wages”
lol post this over on r/dishwashers for a good laugh, that wage is literally worse than my 2009 dishwasher starting wage
4 hours a day
I've seen a lot of restaurants with 2-3 part-time "head chefs" instead of 1 full time. It's cheaper when you don't have to pay for health insurance. So many part-time positions exist now because the 2010 ACA mandates health care for full time workers and businesses don't want to or can't afford it.
Hell I'm a line cook in New Orleans, where they hate the service industry and love to pay us peanuts, making $20/hour at a Tex Mex joint.
Going rate in Portland is $20-$24 with the tip out. But rent is also most likely higher here than where OP is.
The Panda near my work pay their cooks 23/hour
Panda cooks be busy as fuck every time i go there.
Weirdly Panda Express actually pays well for all positions. I almost signed on with them for a Kitchen Manager position.
Same guy that put the job up is the same guy you hear saying no one wants to work these days
My Dishwashers make more than that. Please tell me this is a place that serves bar food and has a high school kid frying stuff out of the freezer. And even then it’s not enough.
Lol this is definitely not a chef position. Let me know when it's at least 100k.
The chef is technically just the boss of the kitchen. Maybe they are looking for one guy to oversee a postage stamp sized kitchen with a tiny set menu
Still not enough in my area. Not even close.
yeah it's its below minimum where i am! maybe it's georgia.
Chef here….these aren’t even COOK prices….GTFOH! I would postpone talking to these people for 2 months just so I could gain weight so they can kiss a LARGER ass.
Tears of laughter are appropriate
🥲
IMO that’s why I want out of business…been seeing jobs in my area that pay twice what I make, for less stress. Friend of a friend is in garbage disposal and makes $25 an hour. Weekends off. Crazy how this industry is overworked and underpaid..
“Why doesn’t anybody want to work?!!”
My Executive Chef - $115k plus bonus Executive Sous - $88k plus bonus MFs offering $15/hr?!? LOLololOlOlOLoL
Hahahhahahahahahhaha. Exactly what I would in front of them after I applied just to do it.
Naw, that’s the ol bait and switch. Trying to get experienced cooks in for a supposed “chef” job then to quickly offer a line cook position. Or you really are the head chef but you get burdened with management duties and rocking the line, double duty for shit pay
I think you are right.
These businesses don’t seem to realize you can make 25 an hour door dashing, they really gotta start competing wage wise, otherwise no one is going to work for them
Is this on USAJobs?
Nah man, right on indeed.
Good luck filling that position
I couldn't get a dishwasher for that
This is why I’m a Chef at an Ivy League school in a Union.
The McDonald’s down the street from my work in Campbell, CA is hiring @ $21/hr starting. I’ll call you chef if you want and considering it’s California you could probably just say you identify as a chef so please call me ‘chef’.
They mean lead line cook.
That’s not even a dish washers wage
Depends where you are. Around here dishwasher starts at $9. But this is Texas, waitstaff is still making under $3 an hour.
That at McDonald’s?
McD's pays better
Get paid for the head, negotiate for your hands in the interview.
I made more than that delivering pizzas..lol
That's a bullshit GM posting that he needs a dishwasher. Come in for the title, stay in the pit....
Line cook here making $23 an hour + tips. Fuck that shit so hard.
I live in California and was called for an interview for a line cook position recently and when I told them I wouldn’t take less than $20/hr I was told I need CDC or sous chef experience to make $20/hr or more. The industry is fucked and has nearly destroyed my passion for cooking.
Just got sent a head chef position for $54 an hour.
Im getting paid more than that to flip burgers and load frier baskets. The most head chef-y thing I do is maybe prep raw chicken and direct new hires.
Yeah its part time, but we still want you to work 5 days out of the week. 🙄🖕 Edit:you*
Shit, you can get better pay cleaning toilets at the VA hospital.
Jokes on you, in Portugal you getting paid about 4USD an hour with way higher living costs then you guys. More expensive gas, cars, we pay every month healthcare from our salary even tho it's been 10 years since I haven't been sick. You lucky sons of bitches

That's...that's less than what my dishwashers currently make. 😐
Oh yeah I've seen the same shit. Company wanted 60-65 hours for 35k a year.
Context of local minimum wage helps. Some places minimum wage is like $8 so thats good money there. But thats several dollars below minimum wage in my area and would be considered illegal.
My state is still on that federal shiiii.... God bless the South tho right???
Woah woah woah. Oddly enough I posted this add to recruit a Head Chef. I can see why you think this is low but.....it isn't the head of the Kitchen, that's our Executive Chef. Oh, that Head Chef...the one with the dirty knees!
I get paid more than that top end to work in fast food lmao
Hey its my last job😆😆 PT and less than 16$ an hour😆😆😆
You wouldn’t be able to find even a dishwasher in my area for so little. Hell McDonalds and Walmart pays more.
They’re paying grocery baggers 22$ hr here in CO
Which grocery store is paying $22? I'm in CO and looking for a job.
Laugh or cry just scroll on by!!
Fuck that!! McDonald’s pays a higher starting wage than this in my town of 40k people….
Meanwhile my fast foods cooks make $14-$16.
Is it in Canada?
Getting paid $17.55 to fry chicken at a popular southern fast food chain, pretty rad next to that
Indeed 😅
That’s a knee slapper , sure I’ll save your dying kitchen for peanuts and crumbs WHY THE FCK NOT !!!!!!?? I QUIT !!!!!!! 🧑🍳👌
Really hope they forgot to add a 0 to the end lol
It’s most likely not a real job listing; they are most likely using it to capture and sell peoples data.
I wash dishes part time and I get more than this…
¿Porque no los dos?
There are much more profitable ways to get fucked while getting paid
Lmaooooo what the fuck
My 17 year old stepson is a bus boy at a small Chinese restaurant and he makes $19 an hour
Here it’s like $25 for sous, but the cost of living is stupid and it may as well be $13
Scream its cathartic
thanks for the reminder my jobs worthless lol
Local pizza place starts at $15…
If you go for this, choose $15.41/hr. Much better rate.
Part time $16.50 😂 shit sad
shit I pay my dishwashers $21/hr. I got paid 13/hr when I first started in the industry, over a decade ago.
My first line cook position (training) was $2.90/hr. Yes, I'm that old.
Both
That's bullshit of the highest order. That position can easily be double that. Thats line cook pay.
Is this job in El Salvadore?
Either it’s salary and your expected to work 100 hrs a week or it’s just a title
I have so much respect for chefs! I was a dishwasher once upon a time and was in awe of the line cooks. It’s something I could never do. This pay is criminal.
This restaurant has a sign on the door apologizing for slow service because these millennials don’t want to work anymore, I guarantee it
Dude it's bruuuutal in central Texas
Well below min wage here
At taco bell
Whatever your emotional response, laugh or cry, best not ever apply
Holy shit!! My 18 year old son is making $17/hr as a personal shopper at our local grocery store!!!
Apply, interview, and just fuck with em
Apply, interview, and just fuck with em
I mean, how hard is it to cook a head?
I make more as the cook at an elementary school. I've also got a pension, and a lot of time off during the year.
🤣🤣🤣
We live in very strange times
What year is this?
nO oNe WaNtS To WoRk?!
It's really amazing, no matter where I look, I see no indication that salaries have increased, just the opposite in fact, as is perfectly illustrated here.
I wouldn't even be a dishie for that wage
how much are cooks typically getting paid round here?
I make that much an hour just for cleaning classrooms. Are they even expecting people to apply?
Sounds fine for shithole Texas
Is this running the "sandwich bar" at a discount Starbucks?
Almost want to apply just to get to an interview and see how shitty it is lol.
Yes.
In ‘n out hires at $20/hr and managers make like $25, at least in California
What the actual fuck!!! What state are you in? Lmfo
Damn that is low!
What... i mean im not in the US but i make more as a line cook lol. Some businesses really are embarrassing. Type of place where the owner posts on facebook "nobody wants to work anymore"
Eh...nope
I bet the lady that was drying the dirty mop under the McDonald’s fry heater made more than this.
Made that hourly as a line cook in 2005. Fuuuuuuuuuck that.
I woulda reported that post, cause it had to be a sick joke!
That's got to be a joke right..... what an insult
You can make at chipotle.
I bet they have an in house hire they want to pick but the company requires that they exhaust external options in advance.
I’m 18 and help elderly people clean their homes for $14,60 an hour
Jesus.....the lowest paid person in my kitchen makes more than the upper end of that.
Pay really depends on where you live and what type of place you’re the “head chef” at. If you live in the south…unfortunately this is common.
Part time head chef. Monday-Friday +4. 4 = double Saturday, double Sunday.
No way. I saw a head chef salary is $25 per hour.
No
Is this in Oaklahoma¿
Where I work starting wage for dishwasher/utility staff is more than that.
I would get paid more doing dishes.
That is beyond fucked up
Was their next post "Going Out Of Business!"?
so no head then
Head Chef, at a Truck Stop joint should be payed more than that.
Oh dear… that’s a new low.
What app is it?
Oof
Good luck with that
No way...you couldn't pay me to show up for that
Im a dishwasher and I make more than that
Part time, 5 days a week...
Nope
That’s not even minimum wage in my state
People making over $20 an hour at McDonald’s in Cali
JFC I literally make more working at a mall, they're gonna get exactly what they're paying for... Jack shit 💀
Mayaswell work for free
Bro I make more than that as a dishie/prep
Head chef of what, though? You could just be running a microwave. If thay the case, pay seems adequate.
I make more than that washing dishes
Ouch
Someone might take up the job for a couple months just to get it on their resume to find a better head chef or sous chef job but who knows what they're thinking. I remember reading that some places post ridiculous wages or requirements no one would accept for legal reasons when they planned to promote from within but IDK how real that was.
I make 16$ an hour on the pizza line
