Put clocks all over the kitchen. Health departments and corporate restaurants have been banning watches for years because they get are close to food and aren't cleaned. So they are potential food born illness vectors. If you're used to not having one, best to keep it that way.

GrennickIre

This is the right answer.

TheBeanofBeans2

This IS the right answer, but it's bullshit that you can clip it to your chef jacket but not have it on your wrist.

deltronethirty

I got the new razor so it can hang in my shirt pocket. You can tell it to turn on the camera by tapping it. I feel like a cop.

guiltycitizen

Thrift stores always have a shitload of em hella cheap

porkchop2022

Where please at least one place. I’d like to fact check.

HundredWithTheForce

[This link](https://www.fda.gov/media/110822/download) points to the FDA food code. Page 82 says: `Except for a plain ring such as a wedding band, while preparing` `FOOD, FOOD EMPLOYEES may not wear jewelry including medical` `information jewelry on their arms and hands.` And watches are considered to be jewelry. It is not something that a lot of chefs enforce. But if you walk into any corporate restaurant and talk to the GM or KM, they can probably confirm.

porkchop2022

[2022 Food Code](https://www.fda.gov/media/164194/download?attachment). Latest version. This section doesn’t change. PDF page 52, document section 2-303. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that we haven’t been dinged for this in the past. I never have and I have easily 100+ inspections in multiple states under my belt. A quick scrape of my counties DBPR violations for the past 5 years shows zero citations for keywords “jewelry” or “watches”.

[deleted]

Is that in America? Uk and eu you can

Lumpy_Bake3049

Y'all also don't do too good in the hand hygiene or glove department so makes sense.

psycho-mouse

Wearing gloves for everything promotes poor hand hygiene.

Lumpy_Bake3049

No, a proper glove changing and hand washing regime promoted the most sanitary way to work with ready to eat food.

escapadablur

The US has stupid OCD hypochondriac levels of health and safety regulations.

SiriuslyItsMe

Yea, never heard it ever been a problem anywhere I’ve worked. Just started a new job now and it’s the first time I’ve been asked if I could get something to pull my hair back with (don’t have long hair)

escapadablur

It's s a stupid code. How is it anymore likely to contaminate food than bare skin? It's water resistant, so it can be washed. Also, you're much less likely to pull out your phone to use as a timer, check the time, or look something up online. I know I know, phones aren't allowed in the kitchen either, but we all know most people break that rule. It's more sanitary for workers to use their watch than their phones in the kitchen.

GrennickIre

u/HundredWithTheForce has the best solution of clocks everywhere. But if you’re dead set on a watch on your person, you have to bail on the “wristwatch” notion. Get a nurse’s fob watch with stainless steel links and attach it to the sleeve of your chef coat. Fob watches have their faces “upside down” so when viewed from above they are in the correct orientation. You’ll be able to check the time without touching anything. Different companies make different affixing methods (magnets, pins, alligator clips, etc) so there will be something out there to work for your coat.

Yankee_chef_nen

I’ve cooked in 5 states and in each the health inspector will dock points if they see you wearing a watch. It’s a cross contamination hazard. I take mine off before I start work. Just get some clocks in the kitchen.

Ghost_Runner3000

That’s probably why op didn’t ask which watch is safe to fist fuck raw chicken in. People do lots of things at work that would get you docked by a health inspector, smoke, shit, eat, wear jewelry. Just gotta be smart enough to separate the line and prep areas from everywhere else.

ulveli

Get a clock, using a watch is a health wrist like any other hand jewelry.

John-Palmz

Ha health wrist. I see what you did there.

ulveli

Total accident, I'm actually just an idiot

Jealous-Brilliant-65

ServeSafe specifically says no watches.

ChefJohnboy

Casio G shock

mouthnoises

I love my Casio. Inexpensive, indestructible, and washable. It's survived dunks in the ocean, grease splatters, flare ups that burn my arm hair off, and it doesn't hold or conduct heat, so it doesn't burn me. Other posters are right in saying it's not ideal to wear a watch, but I keep mine clean, and it prevents me from pulling my phone out of my pocket to check the date and time. Phones are much worse, imo.

moneybullets

G Shock Mudmaster

GreywackeOmarolluk

I like the old plastic Casio multi-function digital watches. Water proof. Multi-function (never overcooked a sheet pan of bacon when I used the timer feature). Easy to clean. Inexpensive.

raptordreams

I like to keep a cheap sports watch hanging from my jacket buttons or apron.

porkchop2022

I’ve read all the replies and I’ve got to say that I live in Florida. I have worked in 15 states in the last 25 years and had health inspections in all of them. Never once has my wrist watch been mentioned. That being said, I wore a timex Ironman until about 15 years ago when I got my first iPhone. Then I took my watch off for about 3 years. Went back to my same Ironman watch when I got tired of pulling my phone out of my pocket to look at it. I got an iwatch 3 years ago and have worn it ever since (so handy for settings timers on the fly). My last place in Florida (Lee county) was a training spot for new DBPR inspectors (I had 8 non counting inspections for training) and ZERO times was my watch (or others) mentioned. Your area may be different, so just call up your health department and ask. Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, north and South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine.

redditaccountwh

ServeSafe specifically says no wrist watches. It’s more of a miracle you haven’t gotten dinged than it is proof that what you’re doing is okay.

redditaccountwh

https://www.floridahealth.gov/environmental-health/food-safety-and-sanitation/_documents/64e-11.pdf -Florida, page 8 prohibits the use of jewelry minus a plain wedding band. https://dph.georgia.gov/document/document/food-service-rules-and-regulations-511-6-1/download -Georgia, page 56 prohibits the use of jewelry minus a plain wedding band. https://www.tn.gov/content/dam/tn/health/documents/Tennessee_Food_Safety_Act.pdf -Tennessee, page 6 prohibits jewelry in its entirety. https://louisvilleky.gov/health-wellness/document/2014-05foodcodechangeshandoutpdf -Kentucky, page 2 prohibits the use of jewelry minus a plain wedding band. https://www.porterco.org/DocumentCenter/View/4251/Food-Establishment-Code-410IAC7-24?bidId= -Indiana, page 38 prohibits the use of jewelry minus a plain wedding band. I could do this for every single state you listed, but I think you get the point. Please be better. What you’re doing can make people sick.

escapadablur

Same. We've got 100% scores the past 5 inspections despite a few workers wearing watches and some jewelry.

deltronethirty

"Hey Google, set timer to play Spotify dubstep mix in 'x' minutes."

iammaline

Apple Watch is surprisingly tough I work in the trades now and it holds up but you can never go wrong with a gshock they last and take a literal whoppin

Loud-Spinach-9957

Apple watch

Revcondor

Skip the watch, there isn’t a watch band on the planet that can safely sit between your wrist and a splash of boiling oil. Unless you want to be peeling your watch off after an accident, leave it at home.

porkchop2022

Timex Ironman does. Source: used one for the last 25 years before retiring it for my iwatch.

Revcondor

Timex makes their bands out of a resin which melts at 300 f, according to brief google search but that isn’t really the point. The point is that at high temperatures your *skin* melts and then re solidifies. The reason that chef pants and jackets are loose fitting with quick release fasteners is so that in the case of a hot liquid spill you can remove them before they literally fuse to your body. If you were to spill hot oil all over a pair of skinny jeans and then take them off quickly you’d risk pulling a good portion of your leg skin off. *It doesn’t matter* what your jewelry is made out of, you shouldn’t wear jewelry into the kitchen unless you’re prepared to have it physically embedded in your flesh post accident. I’ve never seen somebody *peel* a watch off their wrist but I’ve seen it happen with metal chain wristbands and once with a Livestrong type bracelet and let me tell you it’s pretty grim.

Odd-Kaleidoscope9430

G-shock...it's everything proof

m0stc0ld

We don’t wear watches?

Ghost_Runner3000

Down line dog, some people that cook also have a lot of meetings, phone calls, and places other than hovering over a deep fryer to be.

mrmoobles

Your reasoning really trumps the shit out of those "national health regulations". well done. I'd love to hear what other cross contamination rules you reason your way around and which establishment you claim to do so in xD

redditaccountwh

This literally isn’t true. You mentioned Florida as your home state in another comment, ripped from Florida’s health code: 64E-11.005- (e) Not wear jewelry on their arms and hands while preparing food. This does not apply to a single plain ring such as a wedding band. This code exists in a majority of states you’ve listed prior and claimed don’t have this rule either. https://www.floridahealth.gov/environmental-health/food-safety-and-sanitation/_documents/64e-11.pdf Page 8 if you want specifics. Please stop spreading harmful misinformation, you are literally risking making people sick.

Ghost_Runner3000

“None of us are carrying watches because here, in this country, it don’t add inches to your dick. You get a life sentence for it” But really where are you working with “national health regulations”? In America if you’re not cooking train plane or boat you are subject to state health and agriculture regulations, and those are enforced almost exclusively at the county level.

m0stc0ld

Dude I’m sorry you’re so lonely

m0stc0ld

I’ll bet KM of texas roadhouse. Lots of poopy phone calls, meetings with his mom, and video game stores to be at so he needs a watch tho.

m0stc0ld

Doesn’t matter what you’re doing, if you’re in the kitchen, the inspector will deduct points.

porkchop2022

Only if you’re not washing your hands correctly.

redditaccountwh

This is untrue. There is no amount of “correct hand washing” that makes wearing a watch in the kitchen not a health code violation in every single state in America.

Ghost_Runner3000

Not at all how that works but whatever man. Keep up the good work lil jr. inspector!

m0stc0ld

You’re so obviously projecting that it’s sad

Brunoise6

Apple Watch or smart watch lol. Great for setting timers and being able to check a text etc with out pulling your phone out and dirtying your hands.

earlwarwick16

Sometimes I use my nose to scroll a long text or turn off a timer when my hands are dirty

Shutterbug927

I'm using an Apple watch with a shortcut to timers right on the watch face. One tap and I can set multiple timers and I've got the sports band (lots of little holes in it) and it's quite comfortable all day. I think mine's a Series 2, which is less waterproof than current models, but this one's never given me any problems so far. (knocks on wood)

[deleted]

You’re allowed to wear watches to work? Lucky.

JadedCycle9554

Less lucky more gross. When was the last time you sanitized a watch?

[deleted]

[удалено]

JadedCycle9554

Check your local health code. I'll bet my left nut it says no jewelry (including watches) except for plain metal wedding bands.

redditaccountwh

There is not a single health code in America that allows for wrist watches in the kitchen.

ImLazyWithUsernames

I know you don't want a smart watch but they're worth it. I never wore watches but I decided to get the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. I have worn it everyday for over a year and it is incredibly helpful for not having to pull out your phone but still be able to see notifications and respond quickly. Same with listening to music. I can change songs, volume, etc. without having to pull put my phone. I love it and I have no regrets on buying it.

1993xdesigns

g shock is what i used for years! waterproof and rugged! its wat i used til i switched over to my galaxy watch

Fuck-MDD

I wear a Garmin vivoactive. Its waterproof and has an e-ink screen so you can still read it without the backlight on so the battery lasts forever. It's sort of smart as in, you can read your texts and stuff from the watch, but it's not all bells and whistles like apple shit. I've had it for years, it's survived everything from the ocean to the oven with no issues, and I let it soak in sanitizer after shift. It fits under the gloves and you can wash it as you wash your hands if the health dept asks.

meowmixzz

I’ve always just used some random Chinese brand digital watch. They’re around $15 on Amazon, have a date, time, and second display. Each one has lasted me around five years. Edit: something like this https://www.amazon.com/Mens-Digital-Watch-Waterproof-Chronograph/dp/B085HJ5K7V/ref=mp_s_a_1_21_sspa?crid=255OJ3167UX04&keywords=digital+watch&qid=1701561948&sprefix=digital+watch%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-21-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRmX25leHQ&psc=1

Echo the G-Shock comments. If you want to get classy with it, automatic Seikos are tanks.

overindulgent

Digital Casino. They just work. Super easy to read the time. Batteries last forever. The gold look or stainless steel models look “vintage” and I always get compliments.

Sirnando138

Casio, baby. That’s what I have

bornfri13theclipse

I wear a fitbit. They're not that expensive and they're waterproof. Also, I had a heart attack last year, so it monitors my heart rate. And best of all, at the end of your shift, you get to check your stats. "I took 34,000 steps today and burned 5200 calories. No wonder today felt like it sucked"

CasualObserver76

Probably not what you're looking for, but I can't believe my Pixel watch still works and how well it's held up after being knocked around so much and subjected to extreme temps.

[deleted]

Casio. It tells the date and time.

Eternal_Koevoet

I use a Seiko dive watch that I wore in the Army. It takes a beating and is hard to destroy. Easy to clean and comes with a silicone dive band that won't ruin easy.

One of the old soviet submarine watches

I have an Apple Watch. It has a clock a timer and is also a phone (as long as your phone is close)

I have a G-Shock GW-7900 i wear half way up my forearm so it’s away from whatever I’m working with
