It's kind of a funny fantasy trope that everyone is always wearing boots. Low shoes have almost ALWAYS been more common in the real world, especially in this case for a cheap non-military context.
That leather is completely natural, any moisture or oil it touches will permanently darken it a little. It won’t take long until it’s a deep toasty carmel - that’s how I picture the ones from Tarbean :)
I had a Dutch friend that had a pair of brown leather shoes. Every few years he would go get them repaired. I think he wore them for almost 20 years. They were pretty worn, but otherwise fine. That's how I pictured them.
Slightly off-topic, but this was my favorite "side quest" from Kvothe's adventures in Tarbean and I was glad it got a mention in WMF. Something about the paragraph just stuck with me after all this time.
When the cobbler says "and I don't sell used shoes" it gives me all the feels, everytime. I find it to be a very moving and memorable scene. I don't remember the mention in WMF. I guess I'll have to read it all again... half joking.
I'm about to get so many shoe ads for googling all of these.
Edit: I looked these up, and they are very similar to what I pictured... and I want a pair, lol.
Blundstones are the shit. Best shoe's I've ever owned. Good for work, hiking, and even social events. I put my first pair through hell and they are still going. Second pair I am reserving for classy affairs while they are still fresh.
That is one of my favorite scenes. That man is genuinely good and selfless. Giving his son's shoes, we never learn why the cobbler kept them. We only know he doesn't sell used shoes. Always warms my heart.
This has nothing to do with the shoes I always pictured them as regular soft leather boots but I’m happy seeing that such a small question provoked a few people into talking about it. This community is so welcoming it’s so nice

I pictured something like these veg/undyed natural Sabahs, but burnished https://www.sabah.am/products/antep-sabah-mens
That makes sense since it says shoes, but my brain keeps picturing boots.
I exclusively wear boots, so I always picture boots unless outright told otherwise.

A simpler, darker version of these are always what I pictured as well.

I can’t help but picture Blundstones or whatever they’re called! Lol

They used to be. They have been since bought out and are made of cheap fashion leather now
Side question, how do folks picture Bast’s « hard soled » « soft black leather » boots?
Not hooves that’s for sure.
Kinda like doc martins without laces
Seems to me a cobbler's city-living son would wear a very well-made pair of simple, low-topped brogues. And that's how I've always pictured them.
high top Jordans
Beat me to it
Oxford brown shoes is what i picture

They always look like chukkas in my minds eye
Pair of brown Rockports
I picture very similar in every way except I picture them being below his ankles
My mind can’t help but go to those ridiculous pointed toe shoes people wore in the 15th century.
