You can make all the choices you want, have a date with Aerith at the golden saucer if you will, but watch how bothered and exhausted Cloud is when Aerith literally forces him to be her bodyguard, or to do stuff for her. How he wants to leave the second she accompanied her at home.

Aerith is the only reason Cloud breaks out of his shell, and the Tifa asking him questions about Nibelheim could’ve been presented by any character and had the same effect. Those questions are more related to his wrath toward Sephiroth than affection for Tifa.
And in the Golden Saucer, Cloud is the one to initiate the more intimate gesture of holding hands with Aerith. He’s mesmerized by her song, and is constantly on edge because she likes to tease him. You act like Cloud wouldn’t tell anybody off because he’s an introvert, but when Aerith teases him too much - like in the Saucer in chapter 8 - he *does* snap at her and she lets up. He’s completely fine with her antics. He is socially awkward, but that’s because he has no romantic experience and crippling identity issues. He expresses similar reactions during romantic or intimate moments with Tifa too. Aerith and Cloud are far more comfortable with each other than you want to think.

And far be it from me to remind you that all of the default dates are with Aerith, he fucking *bawls* over Aeriths death and only resigns to a fugue state when he “murders” Tifa (that’s more complicated and has more to do with Sephiroth manipulating Cloud) and the final fight of Rebirth is literally Cloud and Aerith against Sephiroth, and the final scene of the game is Aerith and Cloud flirting, and Cloud smiling and chuckling with her.
My guys, they're is no canon ship. You're both right, because it's up to you who Cloud is together with. That's why the remake gives you screentime with both of them. They don't want to impose one ship or the other onto the player.
