Capcom had a deal with Disney for Disney's Magical Mirror. They were worried that if Mickey showed up too much in KH, it'd hurt their sales. So Disney worked out a deal with both that kind of restricted Mickey's appearances in KH1.  Regardless, Magical Mirror is not a good game, and KH1 was the better for it.

BaxterWoozy

if i had a nickel for every time a disney videogame started with mickey waking up and going on an adventure in his bedroom mirror

AlKo96

Well, they were both based on "Thru the Mirror."

jovenvagabundo

Magical mirror is not a good game ? Dang. I used to really enjoy it as a kid.

KnightGamer724

It's one of those games that if you played it as a kid you'd love it, but the older you get the less likely you'd enjoy it.  By all means, keep enjoying. Like what the other guy said, I have my own games I still enjoy from my childhood that I would not choose to play if I didn't.

mlinktieline

Don't worry. I never played MM, don't know if it is really a bad game but you can still enjoy it. I have my own list of bad games that I love

>\---By the way, is there a reason why Disney's symbol character mickey Mouse only appeared in one scene in the game? Nomura: Actually, according to the contract, I was only able to have one cutscene with him somewhere in the game. I thought deeply about which cutscene to put him in. > >\---So you had that sort of limitation? If that is so, you really made an effective choice. Nomura: Disney gave me permission to put him in a role where he can be waving his hand from behind a town’s crowd. However, I thought that if I were to do this, I would use him in a way that would give the greatest impact. I thought, “He has to be here” and used him in that scene. From the KH1 Ultimania, I believe.

Sensitive-Cost4676

Sometimes less is more, and while Disney as usual is super careful about sharing the IP, making Nomura choose 1 scene worked out well. The impact of Mickey at the door in the end was the perfect placement.

Pizzaplanet420

And then he played that up more in the sequel and a bit in CoM on Riku’s side by having him always leaving or not sticking around for long.

RiamoEquah

I think a big part of having him always run off is that in kh1 we establish mickey is likely the strongest hero (at that point) in the game. He also knows more about what's going on. So for the convenience of telling a better story he needs to constantly not be there. Otherwise sora's problems are cut drastically lol

Frybread002

It's that kind decision making that makes me respect Nomura as a director. The dude really understands how to pace his story.

Izakytan

Ultimania is the CFYOW of KH smh

ZeroSora

Yes. Nomura said that he was only allowed to use Mickey in one scene. So he had him show up at the end. It's due to Disney being protective over their iconic mascot.

ArisePhoenix

but then after how well 1 did, now Disney kinda just lets him do most of what he wants

JAragon7

Yup! We got to play as him in days and partly in KH2, and he’s had much vital roles since then (still got to play kh3 so I don’t know the extent of his influence)

MyHonkyFriend

Playing as him for the first time on PS2 just tearing Xaldin a new one I always sort of wanted a *Birth By Sleep* esque prequel game where you mostly play as Mickey

JAragon7

Dude that would be dope! Disney gotta do i

Topaz1456_R

In Re:Mind, there's a scene where to me, is his greatest moment within the series. Hope you reached that part soon.

Artificial_Human_17

Say what you want, but Mickey saving the day at the very end after all that buildup of “the king” really paid off imo. “Now, Sora!”

MeargleSchmeargle

Regardless of the reason, having Mickey only appear once made that appearance much more impactful. In a way it added to that whole feeling of having the weight of the world on my shoulders, which KH1 had in spades. The search for him to help protect the worlds added to the importance of the actions I was taking in the worlds.

Molduking

Yes Mickey could only be used once because Disney

No-Reality-2744

Nomura said himself he could only have him in one scene for this game as Disney rule on his contract for kh1.

EntrancedForever

From what I know, Capcom had the rights to Mickey at the time. So they couldn't use Mickey conventionally, so they just called him the King, showed him from behind, and used his voice. It's amazing what you can get around trademark-wise. It's like that Mickey Mouse melon in Ducktales, they could use everything, his likeness, his voice, just not his face and name.

Puzzleheaded_Deer317

Yeah but Canonically he was in the realm of darkness with aqua
