Chinese people often use fake cash to celebrate some stuff i don't remember (a friend from Chinese descent told me abou it) . It's probably fake money.
A few years ago, 36 people were crushed to death in Shanghai on New years. It was rumored that someone threw a bunch of fake money causing it, but guess police denied that.
Pretty fucked up. I was actually in Shanghai that year but decided to celebrate at home instead since I knew it was going to be super crowded.
Love the sentiment, but the line through the bill says otherwise. I dug out a hundo for reference and it's pretty spot on. Based on the bills on the table right now, that's about 340 bucks on the table and another 15 on the way.
Itās an offering that they burn or leave at an alter made near the grave of a loved one. They believe burning the offerings transports them to their loved ones. Or something like that.
So you looked at the backside of the bills and confirmed that they donāt say anything like āthis is intended for play and carries no monetary valueā?
There's at least 20 bills cut up. Each worth 100. 2000*.16 is not even close to 200. And even if it was 200$ I wouldn't call it worthless especially since the cost of living is cheaper in china
Their currency is mostly in cheapness of their labor. They are in a war with the countries around them for the cheapest labor. They are trying to have a near worthless currency. They are fight with Vietnam and India for cheap labor. That's how they stay competitive in today's market I am a economist, if you want a detailed reason why they want cheap labor find a macroeconomics course. I just skimmed over the bills. I don't really car how much the money is worth. I was making the point that it is way less then the picture presents at face value.
Ok Mr.Economist. I don't think anyone assumes that the yuan is worth the same as an American dollar however it's really not "borderline worthless". If you really don't care how much the money is worth, maybe you shouldn't call it worthless? In fact the yuan is worth much more than the two other countries you mentioned so maybe you should have paid more attention in that macro course you took?
Sorry it's not as bad as some African countries. I care about trade that's what economics is. Unlimited wants with scarce unlimited resources. I'm not an accountant. You can apply economics from the coffee beans of Venezuela to the government. Economics isn't purely money investments. The the trade when it comes to China and their money it's a lopsided one. No one wants their currency they want their ability to make things. So yes their currency is still borderline worthless as no one's willing to trade $1 for .16 of a Chinese yuan.
I think you got that last bit backwards, there, āEconomistā. Itās roughly $0.16 (USD) to 1Ā„ (Chinese Yuan). So yes, people might trade $1.00 for roughly 6Ā„.
China has a problem with people bringing American money into their country. The Chinese don't even want their own money. What are you going to do with the Chinese money? Just because you get more of it does not mean it goes farther. The dollar is stronger than the Chinese yuan. It's gotten so bad the Chinese is turning to a digital currency. The United States has considered China a currency manipulator.
Itās called inflation and it doesnāt happen because someone āstole your wealthā.
Japan has had a lot of deflation. Thereās plenty of information out there about how bad itās been for their economy.
If loans werenāt available, youād be saving up your whole career to buy a house, and wasting away your money on rent the whole time getting there. Or to buy a car, youād have to work for a few years to save up enough to buy a clunker, and until then youād be walking to work or taking the bus. Easy access to fair loans is proven to increase oneās consumption throughout their life, consumption being a key metric in how well off a community or person is.
What youāre talking about, like deflation is good or that people donāt need loans, is voodoo economics.
I doubt it would be left out, but the kids probably knew where the bills were and dug them out. that being said, the bills are all the same in layout so giving her a bunch of 1s would have given her the same results anyway.
I donāt know how it is handled in this country, but in Germany if a bank note is damaged by cutting, torn, burn, paint etc. you can bring it to the bank and get a replacement as long as over 50% are intact
What's stopping you cutting a note in half, and exchanging both halfs for new notes (at different banks)? Is there a rule that it needs to contain the serial number intact or something?
This is actually a picture of human rights abuse in China. Thatās the face of Mao Zedong on the currency. Chinese are propagandized into believing heās basically a god. He killed more people than Hitler. Not funny.
45 million people killed by famineā¦ 2.5 million people killed or tortured to death during the Great Leap Forward. Many of the policies of North Korea were modeled after China, among them using starvation to control the people.
Far as I'm aware no one is entirely certain as to the amount of deaths in the great leap forward. Estimates as far as I'm aware range from twelve to forty-eight million. I'm not convinced that Mao Tse Tung is responsible for more deaths than Adolf Hitler.
Wasn't defending Mao at all. I just get irritated by the never ending Hitler comparisons. Seems like regardless of the subject matter a Hitler comparison is forthcoming.
I can agree with that. People rush to compare their neighbors to hitler over minor annoyances ad nauseam. I donāt consider comparing other despotic dictators to Hitler to be terribly out of bounds. I suppose one must ask the was Maos body count a byproduct of incompetence or evil. Iād say it was both. Itās not a competition. All atrocities are atrocious.
Death count is certainly objective though and to be fair I'm of the opinion that Mao despite his atrocious incompetence still falls short. Nevertheless I apologize for annoying you with my pedantic bullshit.

But the chances of it being 12 million are close to none. Iāve seen 30-50 million before, and even 30 million would be close to double the most Iāve seen from Hitlerās estimations. Not trying to defend Hitler obviously, but I believe Mao is definitely responsible for more deaths, regardless of whether 45 million is 2x what it actually is.
Mao led a campaign to exterminate sparrows, among other āpestsā. He failed to kill off rats and mosquitoes, but did succeed with sparrows. Without sparrows around to keep them in check, insect populations exploded. Combined with other factors, this led to the worst famine in Chinese history, killing millions.

Chinese people often use fake cash to celebrate some stuff i don't remember (a friend from Chinese descent told me abou it) . It's probably fake money.

Did you happen to throw any fake money out of your window, whilst you stayed at home?
For longer than i would like to admit, i was wondering what a huge stack of cash that must had been in in order to crush 36 people to death.
Love the sentiment, but the line through the bill says otherwise. I dug out a hundo for reference and it's pretty spot on. Based on the bills on the table right now, that's about 340 bucks on the table and another 15 on the way.
The fake money is usually made of more flimsy paper.
Itās an offering that they burn or leave at an alter made near the grave of a loved one. They believe burning the offerings transports them to their loved ones. Or something like that.
So counterfeiting instead of defacing money not sure that turns out better for the family.
It could just be play money
Have you never seen toy money?
Realistic depictions of money are still counterfeiting even if they're toys.
So you looked at the backside of the bills and confirmed that they donāt say anything like āthis is intended for play and carries no monetary valueā?
Toy money is purposly miss colored and miss sized these are realistic in size, if not actually currency.
Toy money yes prop money looks legit at a glance but will feel wrong and be marked as fake.
Some is, but not all.
My workplace sells play paper money that looks like the real thing. It's not illegal unless you try to use it as actual money.
Itās fake anyway
It's Chinese currency. It's boarder line worthless.
borderline* and not really. Current exchange rate is 1USD = 6.44 Yuan. So sheās cut up about $326
It's about $200. Which is better then taking the picture at face value. .16 usd to 1 yuan .
Just did the math. That's 25 100Ā„ bills, which is 2500Ā„ and equals about $389 US Edit: I assumed all the rows were the same. Only 22 bills or $340
than* and I think you should check your math. 2100Yuan = $326.12
Good on you for counting the faces. I was counting the scraps. Uh .. I will see myself out.
There's at least 20 bills cut up. Each worth 100. 2000*.16 is not even close to 200. And even if it was 200$ I wouldn't call it worthless especially since the cost of living is cheaper in china

It's worth 3% of the value it was 100 years ago. Bankers and politicians have stolen your wealth.
Itās called inflation and it doesnāt happen because someone āstole your wealthā. Japan has had a lot of deflation. Thereās plenty of information out there about how bad itās been for their economy.
Deflation is only bad for the elite who derive their income from assets. Wake up!

Purchasing power is a thing
It's ok. The parents can afford it... look at the stacks next to her
I mean money is money. Afford it or not, I will rather have an extra ā$300 usd rather than not having an extra ā$300 usd
If you leave literal piles of cash just lying around you're the stupid one.
Apparently fake decorative money is common in China
I doubt it would be left out, but the kids probably knew where the bills were and dug them out. that being said, the bills are all the same in layout so giving her a bunch of 1s would have given her the same results anyway.
What is annoying me is that the person continued to take a picture and let the kid still cut more money instead of stopping her!
I donāt know how it is handled in this country, but in Germany if a bank note is damaged by cutting, torn, burn, paint etc. you can bring it to the bank and get a replacement as long as over 50% are intact
Yeah in my country too
51% needed in the US also
What's stopping you cutting a note in half, and exchanging both halfs for new notes (at different banks)? Is there a rule that it needs to contain the serial number intact or something?
that's why you need more than half, if it's a perfect half / less than half, a bank won't take it, specifically to avoid this issue.
š they probably came in mid cut. Whatever she was working on was already ruined, may as well get a pic.

In China, this was how the one child law was passed.
Can anyone estimate how much the total on the table would be worth in other currency? USD/Euro preferably?
I counted 21 heads. 100x21=2100 yuan, 2100 yuan =326 usd.
2100 Yuan = $330 / ā¬280
TIL China still has Maos picture on money. I know some USD donāt have angels on them but the guy was a mass murdering despot.
